I think the fundamentals would probably be pretty simple. The fiddliness comes with managing resizing on all the stuff like segment canvas, rulers, etc. There will be enough bugs there, I think, to mean it would be a bad idea to accept a patch for this now even if it was initially only a ten-liner.
