I rather saw it as Chris finally growing a spine. He never asserts anything
with any real authority, and leaves everything up for endless debate;
ultimately to be decided by anyone but him. That post had a very rare last
word quality about it that I found rather satisfying, I must admit.

Maybe it's because I'm quite the opposite, and I tend to be extremely
assertive about my opinions, even when it turns out I'm completely full of
crap.

Which reminds me of this time I was working in a garden center, back in
college. This job depended on me having a great deal of plant knowledge, and
I got it by weaving together a tapestry of complete bullshit about my
horticultural prowess that was based on nothing more than having given my
parents the barest minimum of help in their vegetable garden as a child.

So here we are in the tree corral, and my mother comes to visit me at work.
She asked me why this one oak tree had red branch tips, while all the other
ones had brown ones. I hadn't the first clue on earth, but I laid it on thick
and heavy, with some kind of blather about extreme winter temperatures causing
differing cellular growth rates at the branch nodes or something that sounded
vaguely scientific and authoritative.

She was very impressed until she noticed the tag on the odd oak tree out that
labeled it as a red maple.
