I'm too lazy to bother with the command line version, but I tried QSynth.  The 
file "stormy-riders.rg" works fine.  Let's use that as a common reference.

I'm afraid it just works for me here.  I tried lots of different random stuff, 
and I just can't witness anything like the behavior you describe.

I hope we can figure out what the key is, because having the new code fail 
catastrophically on 1/3 of the test machines is a pretty big problem!

For lack of anything better to compare, I'll mention that I'm running Kubntu 
10.04 64-bit.  Maybe you're running 32-bit and there's some stupid MAX_INT bug 
or something.  Hopefully.
