OK, I have coded a proper fix. SortingInserter now does the right thing.
This changed it a lot internally but nothing else changed.
As I mentioned, I will also (in separate commits) push fixes for two minor
bugs I tripped over.
Also tripped over something I don't understand: Why is MappedEventList a
multiset rather than a list? Is it really searched more often than it's
appended to or traversed? I don't want to fiddle with it, though.
