Absolutely. I agree. The gain really should not exceed 0dB. My original idea, when I wrote the modification for my own use, was to boost the edges 3dB and leave the center unchanged. That way my existing files, usually containing settings panned to center, would pass through unscathed. I figured the meters would show me if I was running out of headroom. However, if the original configuration continues to exist as a default, there is little reason for any new "laws" to appear so transparent.
