I find I agree, based on empirical observation that this fixes the issue 
you mentioned, and doesn't seem to have unintended consequences.

I fiddled with it both ways, and don't see any difference whether it's 
+= or = at the end of that block.  I decided to leave it as it was. 
Notation layout code has always been notoriously bitchy, and it's easy 
to cause unintended consequences.
