When I made Rewriter work, I quickly noticed a problem: It's too good. It
makes the segment too perfect, which doesn't allow convenient editing.
Say you want to insert a note on beat 2. Normally you'd insert a
quarter-rest, then insert your note after it.
Rewriter looks at the quarter plus dotted-half and thinks "I can merge
this into a single whole-note rest!". That removes the rest you just
inserted, and you still can't get to beat 2.
So I added hard spaces. When you insert a rest, a hard space is
automatically placed after it. From that time forward, there will be
something at that point in time, either a note or a rest.
Not forever, though. If you insert something note that runs past the hard
space, like a long note or a long rest, the hard space is erased. It is
also erased if you collapse anything that runs past it.
