OK, I realise Gnome has been kind of in flux and has upset some folks, although I'm on KDE here (when I'm not using lxde) so I hadn't really grasped the full implications. I think it might be something to do with systemd, which I don't understand, but it looks like it's something we're all going to have to put up with eventually. One day I'll just have to read a book about it or something.

The new ones are patched to work the the new WxWindows and have serious issues. I built and installed an obsolescent WxWindows and built a new version of Audacity against it for some existing users here. Until Audacity sort their act out w.r.t. the current WxWindows version, it's banned here for new projects (in so far as I get to ban anything).
