You don't need to carry the laptop around. It runs the JMRI program and acts as a server. He's carrying an old iPod around as the throttle. You can also use any iPhone/iPad/iPod or any Android phone/tablet as a wireless throttle. If you already have a suitable device, it can be used as an essentially free wireless throttle.
