Looks like the 2.4.x kernel has some problems with sendfile. Turn off sendfile with "use sendfile = no" as the default to use sendfile was changed to help improve Samba speed. Prior to this, everyone who used it reported 10% speed increases, but no one reported problems with kernel versions so we turned it on by default :-).
