I'm running Samba 3.0.24-11 on FedoraCore 6. I've run yum and it says there are no new updates available. (I think I'd run it fairly recently so I'm not surprised there were no new updates.) Have you changed any /etc/ files since your last reboot? If I had a dollar for every time I changed something 'trivial' just before leaving work for the day, and forgotten about it for three months and had it bite me on next reboot... and if I had a dollar for every time I overlooked it before troubleshooting an issue it caused... well, I could be a professional student :)
Are your users authenticating as themselves in their respective groups with whatever authentication scheme you have? Perhaps they're able to read the directory listing, but not the files within because they are seen as guests.
If that seems to be all well and good, and nothing seems 'strange' in your logs, I'd go straight to a wireshark session and check the SMB conversation on the wire. That should at least leave you with the right questions to focus on.
