Since amaraM does not list it I guess:
sopaanaM = sa upa Anayati ( he brings you close)
Since Valmiki used it must be an ancient word indeed!

Riding a deer, a horse, a lion, an eagle,
A swan, a mad elephant, and a big bull
This half of the verse obviously refers to the joining force of all the devas and
their shaktis on the MahAnavami day for the conquering of MahiShAsura. The reference
is to dEvi mahAtmyaM (8.14)
"yasya devasya tadrUpaM yathA bhUShaNavAhanaM |
tadvadeva hi tat shaktiH asurAn yoddhuM Ayayau ||"
I would translate eagle into Garuda (since it refers to vaiShNavI). Swan refers to
sarasvati, bull refers to mAheshvarI, lion to durgA, elephant to aindrI (shakti of
Indra) and deer and horse to other minor deities.
