Dear Shri Abhyankarji,
This lesson has come out great !
Please consider the following :
Dwiref is not honeybee but big black bee; " bhunga " in Marathi, or Bhramar
in Sanskrit.
The word dwiref has come from the original word bhramar which has two Rs or
two rafars in it.
Nalini is the whole lotus plant. The meaning is the bhramar could have
easily bored the lotus and come out, but he was considerate not to spoil the
delicate flower as he is a connoisseur and was prepared to wait till
morning. But during dusk, the elephant came for water and the elephant's
behaviour was too rough. He uprooted the whole lotus plant !!
Additional information that can be considered for incorporation is :
This subhashitam is traditionally ascribed to Bhartrhari.
2nd Future tense ( for immediate future ) is used here in first 3 lines.
One interesting info is, I met a Gujarati gentleman in one conference who
gave me his business card and his name was Dwiref !!

While this true that there are some aspects of every language that may be
difficult to explain, one can try to see some underlying thoughts in such
issues.

Not a rule, but a matter of "help"::- usually, in samskrit bhaashaa, svaraaH
give good indication of linga.
?
"harsva svaraH" ending "naam" are usually masculine and "diirgha svaraaH"
(bigger, greater) are usually faminine. (there are many exceptions to this, but
as a learner, this has helped me all along. I rely on the ending vowel for
gender determination, and only try to remember the "apavaada")

Namaste.
To my knowledge , there is no thumb rule to determine the gender of an object.
The linga-jnaanam comes only by practice. Hence the need to study lot of
shlokas, subhashitams and read a lot.
I do agree that this causes lot of difficulty in the pursuit of Sanskrit study.
But this kind of difficulty is there while studying any other language.
For eg. In English:
ship is feminine, the plural form of furniture is the same word, the word
'MINUTE' is pronounced differently as per the context, the logic of
pronouncing? -"ough'- differently in the words-? rough, cough, slough...and on
.....and on ......
The list of such illogical behaviour of words is longer than that of
Hanumanji's tail while in Lanka-:)
In spite of all this illogical ways, we feel English is easy.
Moral:
If we invest the same amount of time as we have invested to study? English or
any other language, Sanskrit will be an extremely simple language.....more
logical than most of the other languages -:)
