SCIENCE-JOBS-DE Stellenausschreibung (vacancies) ----------------------------------------------------------------------
Applications for an IPRS PhD fellowship are invited in the area of automated image analysis of cell and tissue based assays in relation to drug discovery for Alzheimer's disease. The PhD student will be enrolled at the University of Western Sydney, and the project will be jointly supervised by Prof. Gerald Münch from the Department of Pharmacology at the UWS School of Medicine, and by Dr. Pascal Vallotton, leader of the biotech imaging group at CSIRO. The fellowship will be valued at 22000 $ per year (tax free) plus a 7000 $ CSIRO top-up for 3 years, with a possible extension of 6 months. The research project will start in Jan 2010 and will focus on the development of computational methods to capture the changes in neuronal morphology and dynamic behaviour of neurites upon contact with neurotoxic compounds. Moreover, the ability of natural compounds and complementary medicines isolated from food and plants to protect against neurodegeneration will be assessed. The activities will also include assay development and live cell microscopy, with ample opportunity for cross fertilisation at the interface of experimentation and computer science. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent and creative graduate. Admission to the program is based on a competitive selection procedure, and candidates are expected to be among the top qualifying students. Applicants require a degree in computer science, physics, mathematics or a related degree (Honours, Masters by coursework with a substantial research component, Diploma) and ideally - one year research experience with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Applications should initially pre-apply with a curriculum vitae, a summary of past research, and Email addresses for 2 referees to Dr. Pascal Vallotton, pascal.vallot...@csiro.au as soon as possible. The deadline for the final application will be August 31st, 2009.
