One PhD position is available at the ITMC at the RWTH Aachen.
This project includes the synthesis and characterization of new polymers with
controlled molecular architecture, endowment of these macromoleculs with
biodegradable segments, and application of the resulting molecules for surface
modification of substrates and preparation of hydrogels especially for
bioanalytical and biosensing applications. The role of the researcher is to
develop new concepts for the modification of material surfaces with biological
cues in a highly specific way that is controlled both in spatial presentation
and in temporal degradation. Application tests such as specific protein
adsorption and cell adhesion and tailored release of immobilized biological
cues will be done in close cooperation with biologists in the group.

Hierarchy is pan‐European Marie-Curie Training Network funded by the EU
in the 7th Framework Programme. The goal of Hierarchy is to develop a tool box
of aided assembly techniques for the construction of the next generation of
molecular and biomolecular devices.

Hierarchy is set up by leading European laboratories in (bio)chemistry, soft
condensed matter and solid state matter, including Radboud University Nijmegen,
Jozef Stefan Institute Ljubljana, RWTH Aachen, TU Eindhoven, University of
Ljubljana, MPI for Dynamics and Self‐Organization Göttingen, Philips
Eindhoven, Balder Ljubljana, Planet Research International Wageningen, and
Merck UK Southampton. Within the Training Programme of Hierarchy, you will also
have the opportunity to work at the partner institutes.
Because of the highly interdisciplinary nature of the Hierarchy research
programme applicants have to demonstrate a broad interest in various activity
of the programme. In addition, candidates will be expected to travel regularly
to Meetings and partner institutions.
Please note that the EU has published strict eligibility criteria for Early
Stage Researchers (PhD students). In short, candidates can not apply in their
own country or the country that they have worked/studied in for more than 12
months over the last 3 years. Candidates from third countries are eligible
under FP7. Women are encouraged to apply.

The ITMC at the RWTH Aachen is a recognised graduate school that works at the
forefront of the design and synthesis of functional molecular structures and
materials. Main areas of research are functional polymers, biomaterials, and
chemical surface modification. The combination of chemical functionality
(reactivity) and structural variability (architecture) in polymers as well as
the tailoring of these materials and their application for the generation of
biofunctional materials and material surfaces are core competences of the
institute. ITMC is fostering an international collaborative atmosphere where
scientists with backgrounds in (bio)chemistry, (micro)biology, physics and
materials science work together to understand and control complexity in order
to design new functionalities in various systems. Accordingly, the institute
has excellent synthetic capabilities and a unique spectroscopy infrastructure.
