DFG Graduiertenkolleg
Bionics – Interactions across Boundaries to the Environment (GRK 1572)

In this Ph.D. Program innovative technical systems are developed based on
biological models (Biomimetics) for structure-based and sensor-based functions
(including information processing) of interfaces. Specialized research groups
at the University of Bonn, the RWTH Aachen, the Forschungszentrum Jülich and
partners from industry will develop solution models from biology to address
specific technological challenges. Teaching will be in English.
The Graduate Program invites applications for:
2 Ph.D. Scholarships
1) Project: Design of a biomimetic infrared sensor
Closing the "knowledge gap" between biological and technical IR-sensors:
modelling and simulation of IR-sensilla using state of the art simulation
techniques. Applicants should have interest and some pre-existing knowledge in
applied mathematics or scientific computing.

2) Project: Principles of microbial glass-formation
Applicants have a strong background in microbiology, analytical chemistry
(HPLC, IR, MS, NMR) and molecular biology (genetic engineering). The applicant
should express a special interest in bacterial metabolomics and the molecular
interaction of stabilizing compounds (glass-forming compatible solutes).

Applicants should hold a master’s degree or equivalent in Biology,
Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Mathematics or Computational Science. The
University of Bonn is an equal-opportunity employer. Highly qualified women are
especially invited to apply.
