SCIENCE-JOBS-DE Stellenausschreibung (vacancies)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) in Jena, Germany, is
offering a 2-year post-doc position starting January 2010 in the area of carbon
cycle data assimilation. The position is placed within the Earth System Network
of Integrated Modelling and Assessment and will contribute to the development
and application of a multiple constraint carbon cycle data assimilation system
(CCDAS) in close collaborations with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology
(MPI MET, Hamburg, DE), the University of Bristol, UK, and FastOpt (Hamburg,
DE).

The work at MPI-BGC will consist of contributing to the development of an
adjoint version of the terrestrial component of the COSMOS Earth system model;
and in testing and applying this adjoint version in the framework of an
existing CCDAS. The resulting tool will provide a unified platform for inverse
carbon cycle studies at different spatial and temporal scales, ranging from
site level to high-resolution regional and global studies, and will be used to
assess uncertainties in carbon-climate interactions in the COSMOS Earth system
model.

The project should appeal to researchers with strong interest in the global
carbon cycle and/or data assimilation. A PhD in physics, biogeosciences or
related subjects as well as experience in a programming language (preferably
Fortran90) and UNIX/Linux operating systems are essential, expertise in land
surface modelling and data assimilation techniques is an asset.

Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E13),
including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment,
including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for
the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service. The Max
Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry seeks to increase the number of female
scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable
qualifications receive preferential status.

Applications and enquiries should be addressed to Soenke Zaehle
(szae...@bgc-jena.mpg.de). Applications should include a current CV, including
a list of publications and the names and contact details of two potential
referees. Review of applications will begin on October 31st, 2009, and will
continue until the position is filled.
