A PhD position is available in an Emmy Noether research group from December 1, 2009 on. The independently funded group is located at the University of Tübingen in the genetics department of the center for plant molecular biology (ZMBP). Our recent studies of eukaryotic riboswitches revealed a novel mechanism of gene regulation and highlighted the impact of RNA structures on pre-mRNA processing such as splicing. The research in our group mainly focuses on the following aspects of RNA-mediated gene control in plants: Identification and characterization of riboswitch motifs Functional characterization of a novel class of splicing regulators Coupling of alternative splicing and nonsense-mediated decay in gene control The PhD candidate needs diploma or masters in biology or related fields. Applicants are expected to have a broad knowledge in biochemistry and molecular biology and possess adequate laboratory experience in these fields. Experience in the areas of RNA and plant research is a plus but not mandatory. Candidates should be highly motivated and interested in basic research. The project will be embedded in a newly established and ambitious research team and will benefit from an attractive scientific environment including many central facilities at the ZMBP. The position is available initially for a period of 3 years; salary is according to German BAT IIa/E 13 (50%).
