LEAD STORY
"iSeries Linux gets first new app"
Innovative Routines International (IRI) has made its Unix-
based flagship product, Cosort, available on the iSeries
via Linux. CoSort provides a 4GL language, SortCL, that
lets developers running SuSE or TurboLinux distributions
better utilize parallel processing, large file I/O and
Internet-related data warehousing.

[1] "iSeries Linux turns in respectable benchmark
performance"
Recently released benchmarks may give some insight into why
the iSeries was named 'Best of Show' at the recent
LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco. The SPECjbb2000
benchmark tested the server-side Java performance of Linux
running in a logical partition on a 4-way 820. While Linux
on the iSeries didn't perform as fast as OS/400 on the
iSeries, it achieved a respectable 19,793 operations per
second -- better than the results for all of Sun's 4-way
servers and some of Compaq's 4-ways.

[2] "Nimda attack seems to slow"
That pesky Nimda worm, which made a mess out of Net
performance with record speed this week, now seems to be
slowing down. Several Internet monitoring firms say Web
traffic is functioning normally again -- but others
remained concerned about the worm.

[3] "IBM, Sun update Web tools"
IBM and Sun have each announced upgraded tools for building
applications and Web services. IBM placed the latest
version of its Web Services Toolkit (WSTK) on its
alphaWorks Web site for developers. WSTK v2.4 offers
developers a runtime environment as well as introductory
material and examples of Web services that developers can
use. Sun's Forte for Java 3.0, Enterprise Edition, is also
now generally available. The company said that the primary
focus of the new version is enhanced support for Enterprise
JavaBeans (EJBs) and creating XML-based services.

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
----------------------------------------

"News, Nostradamus knock out sex in cybersearches"
Here's more proof of how drastically things have changed
since the Tuesday of terror. For the first time, the word
"sex" is not among the top 10 search terms on the Internet.
Sex has been displaced by news and information relative to
the terrorist attacks. An official with AltaVista said more
people are putting "Osama bin Laden" into their search
boxes than "Pamela Lee Anderson," and Old Glory herself
(the American flag) is stirring more interest in cyberspace
than Britney Spears. Google reported a search surge for
words like "CNN," "World Trade Center," "Taliban" and
"American Red Cross," but none of them was as sought-after
as the word "Nostradamus." People wanted to know just how
valid that "Nostradamus predicted this" e-mail was. (It
wasn't.)

QUESTION OF THE DAY --- IBM Infoprint 1130 on AS/400
=====================================================

"We have a new IBM 1130 printer configured as a *LAN
printer on our AS/400's. The printer works fine except when
printing a report of more than 100 pages. When this
happens, it prints the first 100 pages, stops, and then
ends the writer abnormally. The job logs don't really say
anything except for a network problem. The printer is fine
when printing from a Windows application. I've looked at the printer
definition and in the PSFCFG, I bumped up the ACRFRQ value to 200 and
the printer will now print up to 200 pages, but it still ends the
writer on the AS/400."
