 From the Editor

by Michelle Davidson, Site Editor

Despite recent events, the number of people attending this week's COMMON conference is on target with what organizers expected. A large reason for their attendance is the educational opportunities. Attendees have more than 700 sessions taught by experts who have real-world expertise, as well as a chance to network with their peers. There's also the opportunity to hear directly from IBM executives and get your questions answered.

Staffers from search400 are also there, covering the many events and talking to IBM executives and representatives from other companies. But mostly we want to talk to you. We want to hear about your top concerns, issues you're grappling with and how you think we can help. Stop by our booth (#701) to chat. But if you miss us or are unable to get to this COMMON conference, feel free to e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to let me know what's on your mind and what topics you'd like search400 to address.

Reading files with Java on OS/400
This user would like to read index sequential files using java on an AS/400 running OS/400 4.5 with the S36 environment option-enabled. Any suggestions?

WSS and AS/400 JDBC Driver
This user says he's having problems using the SQL Wizard in WSS 3.5 to retrieve data from his AS/400. Site expert Jim Mason offers some advice.

Tip of the Week:
The increased amount of Web-based technology inside OS/400 has created a greater need for AS/400 operators to access and manipulate ASCII-based files and directories in the Integrated File System (IFS), where files for programs such as WebSphere and your AS/400 Web pages are frequently stored. Although IBM provides several tools for IFS manipulation inside its iSeries Operations Navigator program, sometimes it's just easier to perform IFS modification from within the green screen -- if you know the proper commands.
