[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma hybrid ducks

2011-05-09 Thread Christopher Wood
There is a Blue-winged Teal x Northern Shoveler hybrid at the
Montezuma visitor's center. Also, a Common x American Green-winged
Teal integrade. It looks like a Common Teal with a faint white stripe
down the breast. Sandhill Cranes and an assortment of ducks as well.
Cerulean Warbler singing at start of wildlife drive. Pectoral
Sandpiper, Dunlin and Semipalmated Plover are shorebird highlights on
wildlife drive.

[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods 10-11 am

2011-05-09 Thread Bob Anderson
I circled the pond on the Wilson trail counter-clockwise (if your are
looking from above I guess.) It was pretty noisy at the start, with
several WARBLING VIREOS singing, a couple of bubbling HOUSE-WRENS, and a
persistent NORTHERN FLICKER going ki-ki-ki On the northern half I
saw one each of those three, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, YELLOW WARBLER, and
GRAY CATBIRD. On the southern half I saw a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and
then immediately a DOWNY-WOODPECKER that put the the finishing touches
on it's hole, flew in, and poked it's head out to survey the view. Very
cute. At the bench near the exit from Wilson south I ended up in a flock
of 7 to 10 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS that contained a single PALM WARBLER.
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW sat in the trees near the feeders but wouldn't
approach since a worker was tidying up the area.

My goodness it is nice to see the sun.
Bob

[cayugabirds-l] Mammal ID correction

2011-05-09 Thread Scott Haber
After some careful analysis of video that Susan took of the small mammal on
the Wilson Trail at Sapsucker Woods this afternoon, Kevin McGowan has
concluded that it was a Hairy-tailed Mole and not a Short-tailed Shrew.
Still cool to see in plain sight!

[cayugabirds-l] SAPSUCKER WOODS 1-1:45 PM

2011-05-09 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all,
Roi Dor and I did a short walk on the first part of the Wilson Trail (north).
Most birds were quiet, but still there. Lots of YELLOW WARBLERS, 1 WARBLING
VIREO, 1 YELLOW-THROATED VIREO (singing in the distance), a great look at a
ground foraging OVENBIRD, 1 female CHESTNUT -SIDED WARBLER, 1 singing and then
skulking WILSON'S WARBLER, several REDSTARTS, 2 male and 1 female ORIOLE,
including a male in that wonderful white blooming pear tree. Also, a TOWHEE
hopping along in the path by the bench, just past the bend past the platform
(does that make sense??). He was kicking up leaves and didn't seem too
bothered by our passage. We turned back shortly after the bench. Oh yes - an
OSPREY was seen, first sitting in the unoccupied GBH nest, then flying over the
pond a few times before heading off to the north.
Cheers!

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday birding, Yellow-throated Warbler details

2011-05-09 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Hi all,

I apologize for the late post, and thank Tom Schulenberg for posting my
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER from near the Ithaca Airport. It's about time for me to
figure out how to post to the list from my phone, and to receive rare-bird
alert text messages such as White-faced Ibis, which I drove past twice on
Saturday without knowing about.

On Sunday morning, I arrived at Myer's Point at 6:15 and walked out to the
waters edge. 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS were the only birds of interest. Nothing
moving up the lake. ORCHARD ORIOLE singing at the park entrance, as others have
noted. An OSPREY was incubating on a new nest below Portland Point (I saw the
birds carrying sticks in April).

I then birded behind the Ithaca Airport, finding the aforementioned
YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS, with some YELLOW-RUMPS, NORTHERN PARULA,
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, and PURPLE FINCHES in the flooded woods on Mohawk Rd.
The bird had completely white lores, and came in to my imitated Screedh-owl. I
got a couple of identifiable 'digi-bin shots (holding the digital camera up to
my binoculars), which I posted on the eBird rare bird flickr site.

Along my loop behind the airport, I had 3 NASHVILLES, 2 NORTHERN PARULAS,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, OVENBIRDS, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, AND CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER (not singing).

A pair of GREAT EGRETS were ffeeding at the back pond on Nemi Rd. -- I wonder
if these were the same birds I saw flew over the Mohawk Rd pond. and 3 GREEN
Herons dropped out of the skiy and we
