Bug#647255: RFA: curl -- A library and a commandline client for HTTP and a number of protocols

Great, thanks.

Apparently upstream just released 7.23.0. I guess we should let 7.22.0
migrate to testing first, but are you ready for the next round?

Yep. I've had a quick look at it and it seems fine. I've only refreshed some
patches and it builds without problems. I'll take the next few days before
the testing migration to do a deeper check. I've also pushed to git, if
anyone wants to have a look too.

I was wondering whether we should drop the CC to this bug report and move
package related discussions to another place. Maybe an Alioth mailing list?
I'm also fine with using just private emails.

Cheers

Did anyone have a look at the new version yet? We don't need to forward
upstream all the patches immediately, and IMHO we can go on with the upload.

Git commits look fine, but can you please point us to a source package
 (on mentors.d.n or elsewhere)?

Sure. Package just built and uploaded to mentors
 http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/c/curl/curl_7.22.0-1.dsc

Thanks. When reviewing the diff I found that the dependencies of the
-dev packages are wrong: the gnutls and nss variants need other
dependencies than the openssl one. Can you please upload -2 fixing that
to mentors, so we can upload, TIA?

I'm afraid that it's not: libssh2-1-dev should only be included for the

  Sorry for the delay.

I have had a look at all the lintian I tags. There are a lot of
hyphen-used-as-minus-sign (100+) and I am not sure whether they are worth
fixing (would be a lot more work then the gains). I have anyway fixed
a small typo adding the new patch fix_manpage_spelling.

They are certainly worth fixing, though they are maybe not worth fixing
as Debian patches. They should all be forwarded upstream IMHO.

Ok.

We probably should also have a look at the other patches and see if they
need forwarding or are Debian specific.

I have already set Forwarded: not-needed for some of the patches that I
think are Debian specific (feel free to change this if you feel so) and I
have also removed the libtool patch since it was not applied anyway (if
we'll need it we can revert the git commit).

Apart from fix_manpage_spelling I don't know why the other patches are
needed (or if they are Debian specific or not). The no_com_err seems to be
made to avoid to link and Depends against libcomerr2 and libk5crypto3, in
libcurl3* packages, the curl_links_with_rt adds -lrt to the LDFLAGS and
runtests_gdb runs some tests with libtool instead of invoking gdb directly.

Final note. Since this new release, curl can be also built using polarssl
1.0 (which is the version in Debian), and I was wondering whether it would
make sense to add support for it too (adding libcurl3-polarssl and
libcurl4-polarssl-dev packages). I didn't try to build with it yet though.

I would only add those when there is a user request (bug report) for them.

Ok.

 Right.

Can you point me at your package so I can take a look ?

All the changes are on git [0] (I pushed them yesterday evening). I can
build something to upload to mentors.d.n if you prefer.

I'll try to work on the lintian thing today.

I've included the changes from Luk with some modifications, since lintian
was complaining about brace-expansion-in-debhelper-config-file. I've also
restored the html/pdf docs installation to their original paths.

Feel free to comment on the above changes if there is something you don't
  like.

I guess my main comment is that I would like it still to build on
squeeze, 'cos I like backports to be easy - particularly for something
like curl. I haven't double-checked the items in your list of changes
for squeeze-compatibility but they don't look too scary.

I didn't change the Build-Depends apart from removing the no-more-in-Debian
versioned binutils and replacing stunnel with stunnel4 (which is in
oldstable already). I don't know if the current curl was buildable on
squeeze before my changes though (I didn't try).

Cheers

Hi,

I am a bit tied up with real life and would like someone to take the
maintainance of curl. There is a new upstream version but otherwise the
package is in good shape. The packaging is versioned controlled using
git on alioth [1].

Thanks

Bug#647255: RFA: curl -- A library and a commandline client for HTTP and a number of protocols

 Hi,

Hi,

I am a bit tied up with real life and would like someone to take the
maintainance of curl. There is a new upstream version but otherwise the
package is in good shape. The packaging is versioned controlled using
 git on alioth [1].

I am willing to adopt curl if no one objects heavily. I am also open to
co-maintain it with someone else.

If nobody else will show up I'll have a look at the new upstream release
and at the bug reports in the next few days (it may take me some time to
get to know well enough the package though). I will also need a sponsor,
since I'm not a DD yet (if you are not willing to sponsor me, I'll find
one by other means).

Thanks for your work on curl so far.

Cheers

I would be happy to help, although given my usual response times it
would be best if I weren't the only maintainer!

But feel free to add me (address above) to Uploaders along with anyone
else who volunteers (assuming they don't object to me).

Thanks. Adding Alessandro who also responded. It will be great if both
of you completely take over the maintainance of curl from
me. I am adding both of you in the Uploaders.

Alessandro, would you mind looking at the new upstream release? One of
us (myself or Ian) can sponsor the package.

Thanks again.

I'm on it right now. I was wondering whether I could make some biggish
changes such as switching to the debhelper short form for d/rules and some
clean-up of the package in the next future.

I have also done a quick bug triage, and I think a good number of the
reports can be closed without further work (I'll do a second pass first,
just to make sure).

I've looked at the packaging (made it already a bit easier) and some
bugs. I'm happy to (co-)maintain.

Cheers

clean-up of the package in the next future.

I am preparing the upload for the new upstream release (it's building right
now, I'll push to git as soon as it finishes).

The changelog entry, so far:

 curl (7.22.0-1) UNRELEASED; urgency=low
 .
   [ Ramakrishnan Muthukrishnan ]
   * Add new Uploaders, Ian and Alessandro. (bug #647255)
 .
   [ Luk Claes ]
   * Install lintian overrides with dh_lintian.
   * Install all files with dh_install and get rid of dh_installdirs.
 .
   [ Alessandro Ghedini ]
   * New upstream release.
   * Bump debhelper compat level to 8.
   * debian/control:
 - One (Build-)Depends per line.
 - Sort (Build-)Depends.
 - Remove Build-Depends on binutils
(v2.18 is already in oldstable and it is Build-Essential: yes).
 - Build depends on stunnel4 instead of stunnel
(stunnel is just a dummy package).
 - Remove duplicate Section field in package curl.
 - Add Luk to Uploaders too, sort names.
   * debian/patches:
 - Update runtests_gdb patch, add DEP3 headers.
 - Update gnutls and nss patches, add DEP3 headers.
 - Refresh other patches.
 - Add DEP3 headers to all the patches.
   * Replace dh_clean -k call with dh_prep
 (dh_clean -k is deprecated since debhelper 7).

Most of the work was in updating the patches, and I have also cleaned
d/control a bit. There is some more work I'd like to do (e.g. fixing all the
lintian Info tags and updating d/copyright to use DEP5).

I've included the changes from Luk with some modifications, since lintian
was complaining about brace-expansion-in-debhelper-config-file. I've also
restored the html/pdf docs installation to their original paths.

Feel free to comment on the above changes if there is something you don't
like.

Cheers

Right.

Can you point me at your package so I can take a look ?

I guess my main comment is that I would like it still to build on
squeeze, 'cos I like backports to be easy - particularly for something
like curl. I haven't double-checked the items in your list of changes
for squeeze-compatibility but they don't look too scary.

Ian.

I'm interested in adopting this, but I'm a bit tied up with real life as well,
myself, at least until next month or so. If nobody else picks this up by then, I
will.
