The instant bedlam generated by the Cluster and skimmer networks makes it very difficult for the little guys. The other big factor is the need for so many to work every band-mode combination. While I can understand wanting a QWSO on each band and mode, is EVERY combination necessary? For example, if you worked them on 20 SSB, 40 CW, and 15 RTTY, do you also feel obligated to fill in the 20 CW and 20 RTTY slots, too? If so, why? Fortunately, there's not much I need any more, so I haven't even bothered chasing most of the DXpeds in the last few years. The biggest challenge I've had was finding a good split frequency and often the one that nobody is calling on is the one that gets me in the log. Watch some of those DXpedition videos and you'll see how they do it. Some DXpeditions use set split patterns, but others spin the knob, sort of like they were SPing. Just be patient and they'll find you. Of course, don't expect that you'll win versus the guy with a kilowatt and a tower. Head to head he's going to crush you. But you can get in the log if you think outside the box a little. I worked DXCC mobile, so I know all about being at a distinct disadvantage... I won't lie, I make more than one QSO and try to fill up band/mode combos as much as I can. If I plan to pursue CW/Phone awards in the future it will be useful. I'm doing less of that now, but still trying to get as many challenge points as I can. But I don't spend hours in a pileup, so I don't see how I'm setting anyone back. Re: [DX-CHAT] [dx-list] KH8SI
Charlie, I heard you work them on 30 this morning...congrats. There has been a lot of criticism about the KH8SI team but I am sure they are doing their best under the present conditions. Yes, I've heard them working hundreds of JA's but after just listening to the 30 meter pileup this morning I have a better understanding of why. The op (no idea who it was) was working one JA after the other, with full calls each exchange...very, very seldom did he have to say JA4K?? or the like. I heard him two or three times trying to work a USA station...the one that stands out in my mind was when he said W2? 2 or 3 times then he asked K9? 2 or 3 times...the pileup continued at full bore with no one cooperating. He started back with JA stations after several unsuccessful attempts to work NA, again working full calls from JA. I've not heard them with a decent signal on any band so I'm guessing their antenna systems are not the best, which coupled with poor conditions makes it tough. It was interesting to note this morning that the FO/KM9D was S9 while the KH8 was barely S4-5..on 30 meters. If we don't work them on this trip, I would bet that someone with a well planned DXpedition will soon be visiting Swaines and it will be quickly removed from many of our need lists. Good luck to alllets just give them the benefit of the doubt. 73 Tony, W4FOA - Original Message - From: Charlie, W0YG [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Osten B Magnusson [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Barry [EMAIL PROTECTED]; WC7N [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Dx-Chat dx-chat@njdxa.org Sent: Monday, July 31, 2006 7:38 AM Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] [dx-list] KH8SI Yes, there are better CW operators on the Swain's Island DXpedition but it seems to be a mystery as to why they don't seem to be operating. [DX-CHAT] Visiting Pretoria, South Africa (Slightly OT)
Good Morning, A very good ham friend of mine will be in the Pretoria area (Midrand) fortraining from February 28 thru April 8, 2005. Are there any Pretoria hams that would meet (and hopefully be able to spend some time) with him. His free time would be primarily in the evenings (not sure how much free time) and on the weekends. Victor Lobicov, ER1CW (formerly UO5ON) is a highly respected contester and DXer, who has a good command of the English language. If you live in the Pretoria area and would be willing to visit with or have him visit you, please contact me and I will provide Victor's contact info at his home and in Pretoria. I sincerely thank you for your consideration. As an aside, a few years ago, my wife and I hosted a ham visitor from a foreign land and it turned out to be one of our most pleasant memories. That visitor was Valery, EX0V. We basically fell in love with Val and his family. That relationship started from a request just like this one. I hope to hear from some of the Pretoria gang. In which case, no one has probably formally applied for DXCC status before. Having said that... aside from the rather interesting story on the history of the American Samoa ARA and it's application to join the IARU, which is in and of itself another story... Does Swains Island meet the Geographic Separation Entity criteria under paragraph 2B of the existing DXCC rules governing entity recognition? All of them? If so, then the ASARA has nothing to worry about, and the KH8SI DXpedition should in time be properly recognized. If not, then it's going to be a new one... for IOTA participants, and there's nothing wrong about that, either. Kudos to ASARA for identifying a potential new one, but rather than gripe about K1ZZ and what he did or didn't do, or gripe about the IARU society loophole being closed, or argue as to whether or not ASARA could should or would qualify as an IARU society (how do the rest of the KH8 amateur population feel about that? one wonders), let's see if it meets the distance requirements in the first place. [DX-CHAT] U/I Pulsing Noise on 40 Meters?
Just curious how widespread the reception is of the pulsing noise heard here in Georgia on the low end of 40 meters? I hear it every morning from roughly 1100Z to probably 1300Z. It seems to have a "center" around 7015 but can hear it from just below 7000 up to 7035kHz. It has what I would describe as DEEP QSB on the signal unless perhaps it istransmitted on some sort of rotary antenna system (like the old radar systems seen near airports). I can't describe it very well but it doesn't seem to have and "tone", and sounds very similar to what the old steam locomotives sounded like. Probably 2 pulses per second (a guess). Anyone identify this monster? Is it some type of radar or? Sure is annoying, to say the least. Thanks for any info. Better yet, any idea how to get rid of it legally :) Tony, W4FOA EM74

[DX-CHAT] P29XF and P29SX (Propagation Magicians)
Nigel (G3TXF) and Roger (G3SXW) are, in my opinion, not only the propagation magicians of this decade, but they are Ham Radio's answer to the Energizer Bunny. These guys can be heard on bands when it seems like it should be impossible and it appears that they never sleep. I don't know if either or both of them have ever been inducted into the DX Hall of Fame, but if not, they certainly should be! They are superb CW operators and not once in all my many years of chasing them have I ever heard them be short or discourteous to anyone, no matter what! Their qualities and performace are what I would hope everyone that plans to make a DXpedition would strive to equal. Lastly, their QSLing practices should not be overlooked as welljust an excellent example for all of us. My 2 cents... [DX-CHAT] Unofficial Update on YV0 Aves
Have been monitoring the YV5AJ/MM (Pablo operator) and the following info has been passed along. They expect (hope) to arrive Aves Island tomorrow evening (Saturday evening local). Didn't hear any plans beyond that except the first (one or two) stations they set up will be on 20, 40 and 30 meters. No mention of other bands except they will be using a Force 12 vertical on 160 meters. I'm sure there will be a lot of other info (informally) passed on 14195 as they are underway. [DX-CHAT] TO4E Criticisms
It saddens me to read all of the negative comments flying around regarding the current TO4E dxpedition. None of us really understand the environment in which the team is operating, nor do we know the difficulties they may be experiencing, be it health, weather or technical. They have only been on Europa for a couple of days, and as I understand it, they are still installing antennas, etc...so I must say, the early, very critical comments against the team are not only unkind but they are unwarranted. A more serious way to look at it is how it makes you, thecriticizer look, and even more importantly to me, how it puts theUSA ham in a very negative light. This is ThanksgivingDay in the USA, a time to be thankful for just how blessed we are here in the USA. Rather than throw stones at others, why don't you who want to be so critical, take a moment and be thankful that you are able to participate in our wonderful hobby, be thankful that you have a radio and antenna, be thankful for family and friends, and be happy for the freedoms we all take for granted. The TO4E team, as I understand it, will be there until mid December and chances are that before that time we will all have had our chance to work them. Just remember, the negative comments one makes here in the USA on the international DX Clusters, are seen all over the world. I wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and a blessed holiday season. Just my 2 cents.. Tony, W4FOA

Each beacon appears to transmit an individual letter, like 'F', 'K' and 'M' over and over, with no other identification. So far, these are the only three I have heard, but there may be others. The signals appear to be coming from the northwest, possibly from the northern Pacific or southeast Asia. My first guess is they are JA fishing buoys. From my QTH in eastern Nebraska, 'F' is the loudest, followed by 'K', then 'M'. One morning just before sunrise, they were really loud, all well over S9, but most of the time they are S3 or less. They slowly fade out after sunrise. I'm just curious. They could possibly be used as an indication of propagation if their locations were known. 73 de Bill K9RZ Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
Re: [DX-CHAT] 3C0V Situation
John, Well stated! I'm afraid we (the DX community) are but an example of the problems in society today which in my humble opinion can, to a great degree, be traced to the issue of greed. This is reflected in the often noted criticisms of DXpeditions. Rather than being grateful at having the opportunity to chase the DX, many favor criticizing the operation...especially true when one is unable to get in the log or work on a particular band or mode. If you are reading this and are prone to reacting this way, reflect for just a moment on the weeks and months of planning, endless telephone calls and paper correspondence and the accompanying frustrations, being away from family for an extended period, personal risk - including risking one's life, and finally the financial investment made by each team member. Most importantly, much of the world has no concept of what goes on in many of the lesser-developed nations, where justice and one's personal rights to a free trial have virtually no meaning. Sound reasoning and compassion are often words not found in the vocabularies of some of these nations. I hope and pray our fellow hams are not caught up in a situation where they could potentially be badly mistreated or even worse. It would be nice if we all took a break and said a prayer for their safe return to their families. My two cents...thanks for the chance to share my thoughts on the subject. 73 and Good DXing Tony, W4FOA From: John and Mari Minke [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, October 08, 2003 9:57 AM Subject: Re: [DX-CHAT] 3C0V Situation This one should have been moved from dx-news, so I will. From what I gather some DXers seem to be interested only in working a new one regardless of what is going on in the world today. Remember the German DXpedition to Spratly several years ago? That one resulted in one of the operators killed when fired upon. Everyone knew that things on the islands were not cool and all were taking a big chance just to work a new one. Sixty years ago DXers had no problem. DXers were off the air. Some did have a chance to play with radios and were cjhoice targets, on both sides of the conflict. Re: [DX-CHAT] QSL postage
Hi J, Well, as an active QSL manager, and an avid DXer, I must say I am personally offended by your in fact statement. I think it was Winston Churchill or maybe Roosevelt that said All generalities are false, including this one. While it may possibly be true in some rare instances, I think your generality does a great disservice to many QSL managers througout the world who do an outstanding job, for the fun and enjoyment of it. In my many years of managing, I can think of only perhaps two cases where a claim for a QSO not in the log appeared to be under less than honorable circumstances. And I can count on one hand where a QSL was accompanied by $5.00 or more! Just my 2 cents worth, for obvious reasons. 73 Tony, W4FOA - Original Message - From: J. A. Call [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, September 20, 2003 9:47 AM Subject: [DX-CHAT] QSL postage Just think. In the good old days of ham radio and DX we each exchanged cards and paid our own postage. That's when a QSL card meant something. Today it is a business. If you send $5.00 or $10.00 that will almost guarantee you a card whether you work the station or not. If you do not donate to the cause you may or may not get a card. It is as simple as that. I have been a ham and DXing since 1947 and I know what I am talking about. The ARRL and DXCC are no different than anyone else. It used to be an honor roll now it is a business. It costs $10.00 just to send a card in to update your standings. No $10.00 no update. Who wants to pay $20.00 plus just for a QSL card to show that you said 59 which took 2 seconds. That's $10.00 a second or $600 a minute. Everyone is entitled to their 2 cents worth. [DX-CHAT] Need IOTA Info YJ0VB 10SEP03
I believe Murphy has visited my shack and hidden my IOTA directory with ALL of my entries! Until I can work out a deal with ole Murph, wonder if someone could help with a little info? This morning (9SEP), YJ0VB very active on 40 and 30 and was very reluctant to give any info, however one spot did note he was "on a new IOTA". Finally he gave the name of the island, MALEKULA ISLAND", but since I don't have my IOTA book, I am unable to come to any conclusions on the status of his operation today. Anybody help? I have a feeling that "Vlad" is doing some island hopping and not making any differentiation between one island and the other, when in the same DXCC country. For example I think in one case he was on perhaps 3 different IOTA's but the call remained the same. Maybe when he returns home he will publish some sort of "diary" and let us all catch up on exactly where he was and when. Thanks any help. 73 Tony, W4FOA

Good point Zack and I still prefer .. . After 50 years of DXing, I am still trying to find the REAL meaning of QSLL. It can mean only two things (I think)...I will send my card first or I will wait for your card. It seems about a 50/50 split as to the real meaning. Re: [DX-CHAT] Yemen
Very well stated Scott! Let's make this Honor Roll thing easy enough so we can all make it without much effortheck maybe we could even make it automatic for those who have been active DX'ers for at least 10 years. Then after 20, one would automatically be added to the "Top of the List". H, this sounds a bit like incentive licensing, doesn't it? I would suggest that while one waits for those "never to be activated" countries, try multi-band DXCC 160 thru 6 meters. Let's not make it so easy that it becomes almost automatic. Like my granpappy used to say, "anything worth having, is worth working for". My 2 cents worth! See you in the pileups. After all, it is called the "Honor Roll" for a reason. It seems that some ops want to remove countries from the list because they haven't been active for afew years, or thatit seems that it might take 5 or 10 years for the next legtitimate operation. I can understand the desire towant to get to the top of the honor roll, especially if you're only a few away, but removing entities isn't the way to do it. DXing is often a long term propostition and we have it much better these days than before therewas an internet cluster or DX internet mailing lists. Those twotools alonemake DXingso mucheasier- we learn almost immediately when the operations will take place and when they do take place, when they're on and where they're at on the bands.Unfortunately, there is nothing to make waiting easier, which is why patience is a virtue. ;) Geo-political situations change constantly. What seems like a hopeless situation one day can change overnight. Remember Albania? I missed N. Korea because I couldn't hear him, but it was amazing that there was such a long term operation from there in the first place. There is hope for almost any entity, but it just takes time. If it exists, there will eventually be an operation from there. 73, Scott, N9AI
