[e-gold-list] Re: Omnipay Non-Response and Delay Problem

2001-02-23 Thread Eric Gaither

Joe,

Hi, Joe! I must admit, even the best of the Market Makers occasionally
get bogged down in fulfilling orders and have lapses in quality customer
service from time to time. I must admit I have had my share of "breakdowns"
in my history as a Market Maker!

I sympathize with your situation. Please understand the Omnipay is a
rather large company now and deals with a great volume of orders on a daily
basis. From time to time, "situations" such as your's do arise. I am sure
it was a simple oversight, not a personal grudge or attempt to keep your
funds from you.

Perhaps on your next exchange you might want to consider employing the
services of one of the many smaller, independent Market Makers. Most of us
put our emphasis on "quality" vs. "quantity" and dedicate ourselves to
providing outstanding support (prompt replies to questions, answering calls,
quick turn-around times) to our clients in return for slightly higher rates.
Take a look at the e-gold directory page and scan the dozen or so
independent MM's listed there.

If you are serious about your desire for quality Customer Service, I
humbly ask that you consider Gaithmans: http://businesses.msn.com/GEGE/

Regardless of your decision, I wish you the best with your on-line
ventures and electronic currency transactions! Hang in there, many of

daily. I am confident one of them will see your posting and take necessary

[e-gold-list] Re: Omnipay Non-Response and Delay Problem

2001-02-23 Thread Mike Poulos

Hi Joe,

I have to agree with Eric. I have used Eric many times and each time, he is
very fast.

I live in Indonesia and when he sends me a wire, he charges me 1% plus a $35
international wire fee. The best about Eric's service is that since I am 12
hours ahead of him the funds are in my bank the following morning my time.
So, if I was in the same time zone as Eric, the funds are in my account the
same day.

Also, each time I need to wire funds from my e-gold to my account in
Jakarta, I always call him on the phone just to make sure that he has the
funds and that I do not need to wait several days. One other thing about
Eric that I like is that when I am on the phone with him, I am treated with
a lot of respect. Not because I am special more than others but this is the
way he is. So far, as I said, I have not had any problems or delays.

Thanks

Be Blessed,

MIKE

I also tend to resent their implication that e-gold sellers somehow 'know'

[e-gold-list] Thiel's sloppy libel

2001-02-23 Thread Douglas Jackson

letter to editor of salon.com regarding
http://www.salon.com/tech/feature/2001/02/23/pay_pal/index.html
_

Peter Thiel, according to today's salon.com article (correctly)
describing the repudiable nature of PayPal payments, apparently regards
it as appropriate to make reckless allegations that depict e-gold(r)
http://www.e-gold.com as some sort of system to "launder funds". This
(probably actionable) remark is especially ironic given the multiple
attempts that Gold Silver Reserve, Inc. and other companies have made
to help PayPal address PayPal's severe fraud problems. Gold Silver
Reserve, Inc. was the original developer and operator of the e-gold
system. It now functions as the primary distributor of e-gold with its
OmniPay service http://www.omnipay.net , a system of online exchange
that functions as a hybrid payment system in its own right. OmniPay, by
the way, accepts national currency payments only by wire transfer
(subject to a $3000 minimum) because wire is the only non-repudiable
method for receiving payments that involve the banking system.

The first time we heard of x.com and PayPal was around November 1999
when our fraud detection protocols were triggered by a series of
suspicious wires from x.com. We contacted Kathy "I guess I'M the fraud
manager!" Donovan and informed her of our suspicions. x.com (shortly
afterward merged with PayPal) never was able in that episode to even
reconstruct how funds had been taken from their bank account. We
actually had to explain to them that available funds and good funds are
not synonymous and that their practice of ACH debit for funding accounts
was an invitation for fraudsters. They mentioned to our amazement that
they did not even capture IP numbers with the online application they
were using at the time.

Since then we have detected and thwarted multiple episodes of would-be
crooks who, having already taken PayPal to the cleaners, attempted to
rip off our company or companies we do business with. In several
incidents we have offered to help PayPal identify and prosecute obvious
crooks but the attitude of their responses (like many banks) was that
they would rather cover up the fact that they are being inundated by
fraud rather than risk loss of investor confidence. Like so many dotcoms
they seem to be in the business of raising money from investors, as
opposed to earning profits (the former they have excelled at, the latter
I doubt will ever occur).

To set the record straight regarding what e-gold is and how ridiculous
it would be to use it as a system to hide the proceeds of crime...
e-gold enables people to use gold like they would money. e-gold is
backed 100% by gold in allocated storage* under the signatory control of
a third party escrow agent, titled to the e-gold Bullion Reserve Special
Purpose Trust for the exclusive benefit of all e-gold account holders
collectively. A person with an e-gold balance can click some to another
account holder. These transfers settle immediately and, unlike PayPal or
credit card transactions, are non-repudiable. e-gold is account based,
so the entire lineage of any value stream is logged - right back to the
time that value entered the e-gold universe via exchange. Sophisticated
pattern matching protocols detect activities such as smurfing (attempts
to structure transactions in a way to disguise large flows of value).

Please note that the e-gold shopping cart interface enables automation
that enables a recipient to programmatically post accounts as paid and
to deliver goods and services with total confidence that payment
(including micropayments) is fully and irreversibly settled. The maximum
cost of receiving an e-gold payment is 50 cents (US$-equiv.). For values
under $50 the fee for receiving payment is 1%. There have been over 2
million e-gold transactions** even though, unlike PayPal, e-gold never
needed to give money away as an inducement to open accounts, and in fact
has never done much of anything in the way of marketing/promotion.

[e-gold-list] Complaint

2001-02-23 Thread Alexis Michel Golzman

My account number is 255857
My passphrase is gold9amg

I'd appreciate if someone could login to my account to check if it works.

I don't have money in my account yet, that's why I'm giving away the
passphrase. If I ever can login, I'll change it.

Every time I try to login, after ages of waiting I get this message:

"The e-gold system is unable to process your request at this time,
please try again in a few minutes."

I didn't leave Caps-Lock on, my passphrase IS CORRECT (I wrote it at the
time I signed up) and I'm not a hacker trying to steal from anywhere, I
JUST WANT TO GET TO MY E-GOLD ACCOUNT.

My complaint is with the lousy e-gold customer service. I wrote to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], referencing my e-gold account number in the
subject, but I had no answer.

Why don't they use this system?: If you forget your password, you just
submit a form where you enter your account number, then a message with the
passphrase is sent to the e-mail address in the account.

I lost time signing up for a service that doesn't work and I don't even
get a response. Now the only thing I need is someone from the e-gold
service telling me to go to hell and I make my day. Seems they have enough
members and they can easily get rid of someone. I hope I'm wrong with
this, but I'm really angry.

If someone helps me, thank you very much.

Alexis.

Tom
Standard Reserve Debit Cards are on the way. We thought all our problems
were over two weeks ago. The first cards were delivered over ten days ago,
but when we tested them at the ATM, they failed to work. We complained to
our supplier. They dragged their feet, or could not work out what it was
about. Then they finally cracked the problem last evening.

We have a final test on Monday morning at 6am and another at 8am. We are
assured by our supplier that the problem has been fixed. We will know for
absolutely sure on Monday morning.

Should the test go well on Monday morning, cards will leave our supplier
from Monday onwards. We have several hundred to deliver. Delivery will take
between 7 to 10 days depending where you are. Certainly overseas people will
have to wait a little longer.

Thank you for asking the question. We will deliver!! I will personally keep
you posted on Monday. Please check your e-mail to see a note on this list

[e-gold-list] Re: Thiel's sloppy libel

2001-02-23 Thread Michael Moore

Paypals alleged and dangerously inaccurate remarks, as outlined by Damien
Cave, insinuating that e-gold is knowingly aware of receiving funds which
may be illegal do nothing to divert attention from what is essentially a
frail system full of security holes and with no evident professional
verification proccess in place. It does, however, open the door to a
possible massive lawsuit from e-gold and many market makers I might add.
Another nail in the tattered coffinof paypal perhaps?

It begs the question. Why are they in business?

Yes there maybe crimminals who will attempt to use the e-gold system. They
also use the paypal system, and the banking system. in fact any system they
can and it is a fact of life that they are not going to go away so you have
to accept them and learn how to deal with them.

e-gold has what is perhaps one of the most secure transactional systems
around. However it does have a weakness. It's entry point.
e-gold/GSR/Omnipay's handling of this is to distance themselves from the
entry point through the use of market makers who are expected to carry the
risk and put in place processes to reduce that risk as small as possible.
This is why speedy, accurate but unobtrusive verification for the market
maker is so vitally important, as many have found to their cost.

I was slack jawed, for example , when I read that paypal does not even track
the IP addresses of it's customers.

I do not know how paypal works behind the scenes but as they accept credit
cards and assuming they use a banking institution and a gateway I am
wondering now what their chargeback rate is and how come they are still in
business?

Such a self admitted aggressive approach to the detriment of innocent
clients surely indicates a dangerous level of fraud from a banks point of
view.

Aggressive tactics may be warranted in the face of massive fraud attacks,
but only to the correct target. You don't kick the cat when the car does not
start. It seems that paypal has yet to learn that lession.

Kind regards,

Subject: [e-gold-list] Thiel's sloppy libel

letter to editor of salon.com regarding

Gold Silver
Reserve, Inc. was the original developer and operator of the e-gold
 system.
