[Elecraft] K2 - Strange problem ?
I am wondering if any other K2 user has experienced the following. NO receive when NOT on transmit. VERY occasionally I get the my K2 stuck on what seems to be transmit. If I press the MODE button to select the VOX function the display shows SPCH 0.2 then returns to the frequency display with the mode (U or L) flashing. With no microphone connected and the POWER control fully ACW their is no received audio out of the speaker. Therefore one would think that the K2 is stuck on transmit. However, I am able to select other VOX delays, RIT, XIT etc. These functions are normally locked when on transmit with either VOX or PTT. If I power my K2 OFF then ON sometimes I can get the same problem, but more often than not the problem goes away. Because of the very intermittent nature of the fault it will be really difficult to track down. PTT operation always works fine. My gut feeling is that it is a firmware problem, with possibly something not always getting intialised properly. Press MENU to enable the sidetone level adjustment, the tap DISPLAY. That changes where the K2 looks for the sidetone from the controller, which changed a few firmware revs back so it has to be selectable. But if you accidentally tap DISPLAY while leaving the level menu, you disable the sidetone in the process! That's the sidetone source demon laughing if you listen very carefully when you should be hearing the tone... But aren't. Hope that did it! [Elecraft] Lost display button function
Hi I found a strange behavior on my K2/100 When pressing the button display I do hear a beep, but no change on the display I do expect to get the voltage reading and the current, but got still the frq. display A long press on display for ALC/RF rthe info doesn't come up. End up with a total reset (456) after reading the BFO settings Then the display button works normal. Is there a other way to reset those settings? [Elecraft] another successful Elecraft kit build
Yesterday I put in-line my new KAT100 autotuner. This event marks yet another works 100% the first time Elecraft kit. In fact, except for a single resistor I installed incorrectly in 1999, *ALL* of my Elecraft kits have come up, first-time, 100%. Recently I saw a thread about kitbuilding concerns. While I understand that for some there might be initial trepidation, I can honestly say that Elecraft kits don't warrant any undue anxiety! If you can read and can solder, you can build Elecraft kits. And, BOY do they work GREAT once all the parts are assembled! This ATU is _very_ nice, and I own or have owned several LDG and SGC relay-step-matrix type autocouplers, so I can make a fair comparison. I hope that Eric and Wayne decide to 'repackage' this tuner kit for the general ham population, as was mentioned a while back. The resulting profits can then fund more kit development for the rest of us! ;-) With the addition of the KAT100 to my shack, I now have no more Elecrafts to build. [Elecraft] one-microphone question
Someone posted about getting a new mic as a gift, and the desire to make the one mic operate across several rigs. This is actually quite do-able if you're handy and wish to make an adapter as mentioned. I've done this and was very happy with the results. I used an inexpensive small enclosure for the adapter, into which I installed a female Foster 8-pin jack, and then a short pigtail with the rig's matching plug on the end. The mic was set up to work 'directly' with an Icom rig, and pluged into the Foster jack. Because the Icom mics often have higher output levels than other radios need, it was easier to drop the levels resistively than to boost them! Besides, I'm a long-time Icom fan. The audio levels, pinout, connector differences, and etc., are made to be compatible with the other radios simply by changing the adapter box. In most cases I also added external PTT capability (phono jack for contact closure) and even an map-illumination LED (a-la KX1) in one situation where I could source the extra 12 mA. I happen to be a local area networking 'guru' of sorts so I have the needed pro-grade tools to work with RJ-45 type connectors. If you don't have such, fear not: a few dollars will get you a stranded-conductor, all-8-wire available RJ-45 patch cord. Cut into two, it's good for a set of adapters to newer rigs that use the modular connector instead of the Foster jack (as used on the K2). One more thing: Heil sells (via places like Universal Radio) a new Foster male connector that is *very* nice. You can buy a pair for $8 or so, which is a good price.The cable clamp has two 'jaws' one for the Heilwire or other conventional cable, and a second, smaller jaw for an auxiliary wire such as a footswitch or PSK31 interface. I recommend checking this out, along with the 'Heilwire' itself which is a little pricey if examined only on a per-foot basis, but I have found none better, ever. The K2 is very easy to interface with, and so is the IC-703. You'll need to work on figuring out the 'pinning' for any other radios. __ Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! Stewart, You may want to monitor the state of '8R', '8T', and 'MUTE' signals in the K2 during such occurrances. This prompts me to offer a hint for home-brewing ladder line from stuff readily available at Homely Depot - nice project for a rainy day. First, buy a spool of 18 ga stranded copper wire. When I bought mine about year and a half ago it was $14 for a 500 ft spool (given inflation, your results may vary), enough for mucho ladder lines, attic loop antennae, etc (it's a bit flimsy for outdoor dipoles under tension, but great for ladder line or attic antennas. Next, buy some packs of electrical cable staples - these come in a variety of sizes (you want the ones designed to hold 3/4 inch cable. They consist of a plastic saddle that goes over the cable, plus two nails in holes that are about 7/8 inch apart. The nails are easily pulled out with pliers (and as a side bonus you will end up with a good supply of little nails for hanging pictures or whatever) and the resulting hole is just right for easily threading the 18 ga wire thru. If you don't already have a hot-melt glue gun, buy one of these, too, and in any case buy some glue sticks to fuel it with. Thread the 18 ga wire thru the holes in the staple saddles, give a little squirt with the hot-melt glue to hold it, and voila, you have your ladder line. It's what I'm using on my windom and has held up very well. Some military and government circuits in which the same ops were on watch at the same times and only passed traffic between themselves or between a regular consistent small group of ops may have developed some special usages. Those are also the exceptions who often became speed demons running at 30 or 40 wpm. But they were a very exclusive and small club. It's possible that some of them developed special characters, but they were definitely not normal commercial usage. The marine bands and the bulk of the commercial circuits were very careful to use only standard international Morse for maximum efficiency. Requests for fills cause delays many times longer than the time lost using standard characters, just as we were careful to work at the speed of the slowest operator. On commercial merchant marine frequencies and on the army nets we seldom got over 20 wpm, and very often had to follow a shipboard operator on a straight key at 10 or 15 wpm. After all, back then we had to *communicate* by CW. We couldn't log onto the internet and search the databases to figure out what the op meant by a call sign sent using a strange assortment of dits and dahs that didn't fit any known call sign format. We had to stop everything and ask for fills if the op didn't know enough to do it right. I read recently that a VLF station in Russia UT0 something received permission to use the long T instead of the 0 for QRSS. I remember when I was a novice in the 60's being told never to use the long T in a callsign. The ID question is interesting. I know that CW holds a special place, but there is no out-of-mode ID requirement for digital modes such as PSK, as long as the modulation is publicly described. CW is a digital mode no matter whether it is Morse or International Morse or Japanese Kana Code, ergo there *ought* to be no CW ID requirement for International Morse with T instead of 0 as long as there is no intent to obscure communications, merely to facilitate it. Ought to, but I doubt that OOs will see it that way because of the strong position of International Morse Code for CW. And I suspect the FCC would not like to have us bring them such problems either. The ammeter is a simple meter with three binding posts... 0-500, 0-1000 and common. It sold for around $13 at Radio Shack (part number 22-401) but was discontinued over a year ago (I've tried to just buy another one with no luck). Inside the small plastic case is the meter and wires, no other parts. Internally, the meter has no part markings other than the word CHINA. The black (hookup) wire from the meter terminal was soldered to a bare wire covered with loose fabric insulation, which was then soldered to the common (black) binding post (this was the wire that melted), and the red (hookup) wire connects to a bare wire which connects the (red) 0-500 and (red) 0-1000 binding posts and is covered with loose fabric insulation close to the 0-500 binding post (the red side is still there and did not melt). KIO2 simplex? To whom it may concern. Elecraft K2 #4487 with all options except the KPA100 and internal battery is now up and running flawlessly, except for the KIO2 option. Connected to a computer running Hyperterminal (Win XP Pro - all updates) I can send the test message from the K2 to my computer which immediately pops up in the window, but no software will talk to the K2 (or so it seems.) Hyperterminal are not able to get through to the KIO2 - just the other way arround. All wires are checked for misplacement and all measurements seems ok. Any advice? Strange that the KIO2 will talk to my computer, but the K2 will not take any orders from ANY computer (I have tried several.), I have checked the diodes.. Everything else works great on my K2. - Which also counts for my K1 #1905. Tom: Sounds like the computer side of the cable needs the CTS signal jumper, or maybe the computer needs the rts signals turned off. Also check the 10 uh choke on the kio2. Hello All, 20 meters was fun and 40 meters was a bit of trouble this evening. 20 meters started with me sitting on frequency listening to the testers madly sending code. Could not help myself so I exchanged info with N0IJ. My one official contest contact during the 48 hour period. I listened quite a bit but he sounded so plaintive in the last few seconds of the contest I just couldn't help myself :) Then the band went quiet except for a few dits here and there. Well, says I, it's showtime. And commenced calling the net. I thought I had someone early on but just could not drag him out. Then with the help of Dan down in GA we got him. Checking my notes I find I got his call correct but in two parts. First the 4OW and then the KR?W? Close but not quite. But then he's all the way over in Florida so that is not too bad. Then I dug for the last one thinking it was in Washington or Oregon because it was so tough. No again, it was in Hawaii. But it was fun trying. There were times I was sure I was hearing something more but I may have been imagining it too.
