Re: [lace] Fw: A Great Loss.....
I emailed Carla ( csbow...@cableone.netcsbow...@cableone.net ) who was the lady who notified Diane about Mrs. Southard's death. She said she would be there. I asked her to convey to Mrs. Southard's loved ones how much she has meant to so many of us. Note also that the funeral home is named. A bit of search would result in an address. Cards sent there would be given to the family. She does have family, I remember her saying so. lrb -Original Message- From: Sue Babbs Sent: Friday, December 30, 2011 8:40 AM To: Arachne Subject: Re: [lace] Fw: A Great Loss. Oh how sad! She had given so much to the lacemakers in this country. Does anyone know if she has family to whom we could send a card acknowledging how much she meant to lacemakers?(and an address)? I would certainly like to send one, as I think they might appreciate knowing that. Re: [lace] needle lace jewelry
I never knew I liked needlace before today, some truly spectacular and very pretty pieces. I keep gravitating to the butterflies, the dragonfly and the flowers, that fabulous 3D effect just had me hooked. I guess I might need to hunt out some beginner stuff and give it a try. But not today, I am finishing off one small piece of lace and also can go back to trying to work a quilted advent calendar (so its ready for next year, not late for this, grin. ) I just started and was struggling with vision, but that is improving now we found a loose screw on my glasses and they are now sitting straight again:-). Sue T Dorset UK Lauren I can't recall seeing any wire needle lace (wire bobbin lace is fairly common). But metallic looking threads could certainly be used. There are a few examples among the NEEDLELACETALK photos. http://needlelacetalk.ning.com/photo Once on that page, do a search on earrings and another on necklace. [lace] Another sad loss for the lace community
I have just been told of another very sad loss for the lacemaking community - Irma Osterman died on Wednesday. You can read her obituary at http://www.littlerockfuneralhome.com/fh/obituaries/obituary.cfm?o_id=1350192fh_id=10306 We haven't heard much of Irma in recent years but promoting and teaching needle lace, particularly Point de Gaze, was her great passion in life. She was the needle lace editor for the IOLI bulletin for many years. She was a truly wonderful person, a great teacher and a good friend to all. [lace] Fw: A Great Loss.....
Devon, thank you for posting the link. I was able to write a note on the site about how Doris had encouraged me with my lace designing. I sent her an 80th birthday card and told her I had started to teach myself from her book. She replied with a 4 page hand written letter of encouragement. We will miss her being in the world and it is a sad day for all lacemakers to lose a wonderful member of our community. She told me she was on Arachne as a lurker. Janice .. [lace] Doris Southard and Irma Osterman--their lace
For those who might not know either of these ladies, or who might want to be reminded of their skill, I do have some photos on my website. On my website I do have many photos of Doris' Tonder bobbin lace. She came to Chicago twice to give workshops for our local guild and stayed with me. This gave me an opportunity to photograph several of her pieces. The photography dates from the mid to late 1980s, so it doesn't contain her more recent work. http://lynxlace.com/bobbinlacenewrevival.html Her have DS below them. Look for the Point Ground Laces. I also have a piece of Irma's lace on my home page. http://lynxlace.com/index.html#needle lace It is the first one in the needle lace section. The title is Let me grow lovely growing old. It was published in the IOLI Bulletin and she sent me a print when I asked permission to post it. Re: [lace] needle lace
Hi, I attempted some wire needlelace a couple of years ago. It's very challenging, almost impossible to back track redo mistakes as the wire has memory retains kinks etc. I didn't finish the piece. Fun though, do have a try. Can't remember the gauge of wire I used, it was very fine copper wire. I'm on holidays, but when I get home will try find it post a pic.
