[nysbirds-l] Alley Pond Park
I visited Alley Pond Park this morning between 6:45 Am and 9:00 Am. It was relatively quite and the amount of leaf coverage made finding birds by eye quite difficult. There were quite a few thrushes around (didn't get good enough looks to determine which species) and the sounds of Ovenbirds, Canada Warblers and Rose Breasted-Grosbeaks were prevalent throughout. I did find a Northern Parula that was nearly on the forest floor on the Southside of the park near Kingsbury Ave. A Tennesse Warbler was heard but not seen near Clovefield Blvd. I also noticed the nest of a Cardinal on the south side of the Adventure Center in a tree about 6 feet off the ground. Photos of some of the birds can be seen here: http://birdsoflongisland.blogspot.com/2012/05/alley-pond-park.html -- - Luke www.birdsoflongisland.blogspot.com www.wildlongisland.blogspot.com -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] White-winged Dove, West End (Nassau)
At 2:30 this afternoon, a White-winged Dove flew past me as I walked northward from Field 2 of Jones Beach-West End along the western exit road. It was about 3 feet above ground, came past about 15-20 feet from me, and continued eastward about 100 feet before disappearing from view around the shrubs and pines that border the parking field. The white crescent across the middle of each wing was conspicuous. I also noted the blunt tail with white outer tips, and reddish brown tinge in the upper tail coverts and tail feathers. I could not find the bird when I searched for it afterward, but I cannot rule out the possibility that it flew into the pines and stayed out of view. Four Gull-billed Terns were among the terns on the sand bar near the Coast-Guard station parking lot. [nysbirds-l] PP-Sun.
Wow. What a fantastic morning in Prospect Park. Three of us from CUNY started at Grand Army Plaza at 8:00 and were rewarded with two special birds right away. There was a Cape May warbler in the conifers behind the Stranahan statue and a Philadelphia vireo not far away in the underbrush. Lots of warblers the whole way, culminating in a spectacular sight near the pools. There was a swarm of flies low to the ground and birds were coming down into the understory to catch them. There were nearly a dozen species of warbler, vireo, and others zipping right past our faces. A scarlet tanager was at eye level. I have never seen anything like that before. It was a truly amazing day for migrants. Five species of vireos and a personal record (by a wide margin) 17 warblers. International Migratory Bird Day finally lived up to its name. [nysbirds-l] White-faced Ibis in East Hampton
Thus morning Shai Mitra and Pat Lindsay found a White-faced Ibis in Scoy Pond on the Grace Estate in East Hampton (Suffolk Co.). The bird was still present when I left it at about 8:50. [nysbirds-l] FW: Hempstead Lake SP - Nassau County - Kentucky Warbler - Correction on directions
Apparently I gave the wrong parking lot number. I'm told it's lot 3. Taking exit 18, Eagle Ave, south from the Southern State, it's the entrance just before the road curves sharply left. Go left just after the toll booth, not right towards the tennis courts. Sorry for any confusion From: davehawk...@msn.com To: nysbirds-l@cornell.edu Subject: Hempstead Lake SP - Nassau County - Kentucky Warbler Date: Sat, 12 May 2012 10:48:20 -0400 Lots of birdsong this morning. Although I missed the highlights mentioned yesterday by Ken Feustel, I had one of my own. A Kentucky Warbler was singing at the northern edge of the picnic fields at field 2, just south of the houses, in the wooded area. It sang from leaf litter on the ground and 30 feet high in the trees. Other notables were 2 Solitary Sandpipers and a Blackburnian warbler. Northern Waterthrushes and Canada Warblers were numerous Note this area will be closed May 18-May 20 due to a Boy Scout Jamboree -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
