[nysbirds-l] Gerry Park Cackling Goose--Update?
Any news on the Gerry Park Cackling Goose? I'm going to go try to find it tomorrow or Saturday and would like some additional information. Which pond is it in? [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach sea ducks
After having a look at the Sea Cliff Black Guillemot, James Knox and I headed for Jones Beach where we had 7 Harlequin Ducks at the end of the jetty, two of which were males in breeding plumage, and by far the the most I've ever seen in one location in the state of New York. Also in this mixed raft were 10-12 Common Eiders, one Surf Scoter, and, 37 Long-tailed Ducks. Two Rudy Turnstones turned up amongst the 17 Purple Sandpipers creeping along it's craggy edges. Though we dipped on the Northern Shrike and the Gyr, it ended up being a great day. Keep'em up! [nysbirds-l] 12/25 Gyrfalcon - Cedar Beach Marina
The Gyrfalcon was observed again yesterday (12/25) at Cedar Beach Marina at about 1:30 p.m.. It was perched in a distant short cedar-like bush out beyond the osprey platform on the east side of the marina. We had a good scope look at the bird from the end of the boardwalk that goes out into the marsh from the marina. There was a Peregrine Falcon perched on the osprey platform for a nice comparison. The bird was sitting and preening. It was harassed briefly by a couple of Northern Harriers. After about 15 - 20 minutes, the Gyrfalcon suddenly took off from the bush, flew very low and fast west over the marsh and caught a duck. It happened so fast we couldn't even ID the duck. It sat down in the marsh, partially obscured, and appeared to be wrestling with the duck. After a couple of minutes, it settled further down in the marsh and was blocked from our view.
