Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] problem updating linux-image-2.6.24-*

2008-06-18 Thread Tarin Mahmood
Please check if all your main repositories are on and updated.

First Clean> sudo aptitude clean
Then Update> sudo aptitude update
and then Upgrade> sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

If this do not work then,
run
sudo apt-get install
this will try to fix any broken installation.

if that do not works, then
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a
this will reconfigure all the packages, will take a very long time depending
on your installed software

you might try to reconfigure individual packages, which I would prefer to do
in my cases

sudo dpkg-reconfigure

maybe you can try to reconfigure the kernel images or apt-get

I hope this helps

Re: [ Ubuntu-BD ] Ubuntu-Bangladesh back online

2008-06-18 Thread Russell John
Actually it was down for 5 days, and the problem was on Canonical's
end. This domain is owned by Canonical and it's pointed to their name
server where I do not access, so I couldn't check what actually went
wrong. After talking to the Canonical and Ubuntu-EU guys I found that
it was mistakenly pointed to our old hosting company, from where we
moved to another host about 11 months ago. Someone probably reverted
the settings from backup by mistake, resulting in downtime of our
site.

Anyhow I'm glad it's working now and I appologise to everyone who
tried to visit our site but couldn't.

Thank you all for your continuing support and thank you for being with us.

Best regards,
Russell

P.S. If anyone is interested to write articles/guides/tutorials/etc
for ubuntu-bd.org, then please get in touch with Shahriar Tariq at
shahriar AT linux.org.bd. Any help is appreciated.

Wine is an open source project that takes the Windows API and allows you
to run seamlessly Windows applications on your Linux machine. It's like
having a small version of Windows packed up in your Linux system. Wine's
API is 100% non-Microsoft code, but it uses Windows DLL in case you have
them.

[ Ubuntu-BD ] Ekushey Fonts for Ubuntu

2008-06-18 Thread Russell John
I've been using the Unicode based Bengali fonts of Ekushey [1] for a
long time, specially SolaimanLipi which I use almost everywhere. To
make these fine fonts easily available on Ubuntu, I've made a package
of all of them. Users of Ubuntu derivatives such as Linux Mint [2]
can use this package too.

Font list:

   1. SolaimanLipi
   2. Rupali
   3. Ekushey Lohit
   4. Ekushey Sharifa
   5. Ekushey Punarbhaba
   6. Ekushey Sumit
   7. Ekushey Durga
   8. Ekushey Saraswati
   9. Ekushey Puja
  10. Ekushey Azad
  11. Ekushey Godhuli
  12. Ekushey Mohua

Installation:

To install this package, you can either download the binary file from:
http://tinyurl.com/5rxv76 (MD5: a6cbc1dae63c1cf62c1ff4ef4ab73068), or
install it via apt-get or your graphical package manager. This method
is recommended, as you'll get notification when an update is
available. Here's how to do it via apt-get:

1. Open the apt sources.list file from the run command dialogue box (ALT+F2):

   gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list (Ubuntu)
   gksudo kate /etc/apt/sources.list (Kubuntu)
   gksudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list (Xubuntu)

2. Add the following line on the bottom of the file:

   deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-bd/ubuntu intrepid main

3. Open a shell window and type:

   sudo apt-get update

4. When the update is completed, type:

   sudo apt-get install ttf-ekushey

When you see the warning message "The following packages cannot be
authenticated!", press y to continue.

5. Done, now you can use the Ekushey fonts on your system!

I'll try to get this package into the Ubuntu repository, and possibly
into the Debian repository as well.

Hope this is helpful to you guys!

Regards,
Russell
