RE: [abcusers] free Finale

2000-10-25 Thread Guido Gonzato

Even though these free things are available, I (and many others, I'm sure)
still prefer writing - better: thinking - music in abc. The advantages of
open source programs represent 50% of my choice, the quality and design of
abc the remaining 50%.

Unless I'm mistaken, this is the story:
A while ago, Sibelius introduced the Schorch plug-in, enabling Sibelius
users to post sheet music files in .sib format on the web. Eventually
Coda had to respond to this, and for some reason (probably because they
didn't know how to crete a plug-in) they went one step further and
offered a scaled down free version of Finale rather than just a file
reader plug-in.

Sadly enough it seems that the concepts of cooperating to make a common
standard and of creating a true (i.e. cross paltform) internet file
format are completely alien to both companies :(

Maybe we need an abc2finale translator to take advantage of it?

Well, it should be doable. Finale uses two different file format, and
one of them is text, not binary.

Sounds like a little hanky-panky to me. The Finale is being given away by the authors.

There's a thesis on reading the the Enigma format at:

Re: [abcusers] free Finale

2000-10-25 Thread b.sallows

I must be getting past it. People talk about free Finale but I can't find
it.
Can anybody help?
I also tried the free Encore site but the server seems to be down until late
September.
I always seem to miss the bus.
Meanwhile I carry on using Music Time DeLuxe and Jim Vint's abc2win.
Here's a problem not strictly abc but :-
Does anyone know if software exists to slightly change the pitch of .wav
files.
By slightly I mean less than a semi-tone.
I know that this can be done with .midi software but have not found anything
for .wav files.
For instance "acid" have a free program that can change speed, and pitch but
only by semi-tones.

Finale NotePad offered as a free download for PC Mac's
 October 18, 2000, 9:40 am ET
 http://www.codamusic.com/coda/np.asp

Coda Music Technology and Net4Music S.A., in their first major
collaboration since agreeing to merge, have introduced Finale
NotePad, a free downloadable version of Coda's music notation
software (it's also available on CD-ROM for US $19.95)
 .
The application, available for both Mac and Windows platforms,
lets musicians, regardless of skill level, engrave simple music
and do interactive editing of their own sheet music in digital
format. The release marks a giant first step in the combined
companies efforts to promote music education and the creative
process through accessible, high quality music technology, says
 Net4Music CEO Francois Duliege.

"With the introduction of products and services like Finale
NotePad, we are looking to establish a common worldwide standard
for basic music notation, and to fuel the creation of written
music rather than focus on just the finished product,'' Duliege
says in a press announcement. "NotePad is an excellent
educational tool for music theory as well as a fun,
un-intimidating way to begin putting one's musical ideas in a
 tangible form."

Finale NotePad is a basic version of Coda Music Technology's
Finale notation software. As users gain more experience with this
level of electronic composition and arranging (and ultimately
outgrow it), they can trade up and buy one of Coda's more fully
featured products, Finale PrintMusic!, Finale Allegro, or Finale,
 says Duliege.

[abcusers] Update to jaabc2ps

2000-10-25 Thread John Atchley

I've uploaded an update at http://www.guitarnut.com/abc/index.html

I cleaned up the source and used preprocessor definitions so it should
compile on various platforms without warnings (except for one unused
function that I haven't looked at yet, just ignore it). Thanks Guido!

I also fixed a horizontal spacing problem that sometimes occured when
voices with different note lengths were combined.

Also improved the %%jsastem= implementation to avoid stem collisions
between voices.

I implemented M:none. You have the choice of having M:none display "none,"
"free," "free" over "meter," or "fm." I have no formal music training --
if there is something else that really should be displayed let me know and
I'll add an option for it.

Enjoy,
John Atchley
