Agreedbut the poster specifically asked for proactive
measures. I merely offered such a measure.

Defrag
I would not even begin to worry at 80MB - it's worth
thinking about it again if it's grown to 10 times that size, which it won't do
without a reason (i.e. you're creating new objects in AD or adding more data to
existing objects). AD is quite good as re-using existing whitespace
in the database (e.g. after deletion of obsolete objects and passing tombstone
lifetime), so that you shouldn't see it grow just for the fun of
it.
At 80MB you're AD size is basically only a fraction of the
complete SystemState you need to backup to ensure recovery and letting it grow
some more will still not impact recovery times too much. I usually work
with multi-GB AD sizes, and even here you don't do offline defrags too
regularily (unless there is a concrete need to do so).

[ActiveDir] AD Defrag
There is a slightly more proactive approach - monitor the
amount of whitespace in the database and defrag once this reaches n% of the
database size.
e.g. if whitespace represents 50% of the database then
offline defrag, when next convenient.
Whitespace can be monitored as follows:

recommends that you do it on an "as needed" basis, as
determined by available disk space, or after large batch delete
operations.

Defrag
Question:
I have 8 AD
controllers in several locations. All have different database sizes ranging from
45 MB to 80 MB.
Is there a
rule of when I should or when I need to do an offline defrag of the Database?
I just had to
defrag my mail store and I dont want to not be proactive with my Active
Directory so Im looking for advice on when, why and how often I should do a
defrag.
Thanks
Mike
