Hi Graham,

More than the 'Domain Migration Cookbook' I don't see any
reference. Checked the documents properties but didn't see
any name showing up.

Good luck,

just one other thought that comes to mind on the use of ADMT 2

regards the installation of the ADMT agent on computers that are the objects
of migration.

i assume no issues with the size of the data transfer required for this
operation - any guestimates on the volume of data to be transferred in this
process

again i assume that this comes from the server running ADMT - i suppose if
there were any issues wrt available WAN bandwidth the only fix is to have
the ADMT running on a a portable computer which is moved closer to the
computers being migrated !

2003-02-21 Thread Tony Murray
Diane, Rick

I ran this by one of the AD Program Manager's at Microsoft (Rick, you had an evening
meal with him last week). Here's his response:

Regarding the thread around password migraton: This is
a riddle :-). The only way how this could have worked is if all users
used their user names as passwords in the source domain and ADMT was
configured to set the password to the user name as part of the
migration. Otherwise, ADMT always requires the PES.

Diane,

Like Tony, I'm surprised as well. My experience has been that ADMT
v.1.0 would migrate users, etc, but the password was not brought over.
Hence the need to assign a password (username, some set value).

ADMT v2.0 introduced the PES, which allows the migration of the password
(yes, telling you stuff you already know Benefit for those that
don't) by using a PES (Password Export Server) to 'copy' the password
along with the user.

I've used ADMT 1 and 2 quite heavily, and it hasn't mattered if the
source was a NT 4.0 domain or not. Apparently, YMDV (you mileage DID
vary).

The PES is required if you want to migrate passwords from NT4
to W2K. It can be installed on NT4 BDCs or PDCs, although
the PDC is generally preferable as ADMT talks to it anyway.
The controller running the PES must have the high encryption

presumably this documents ADMT v1.0 and as such does not
indicate any configuration relating to pwd migration

at what at the moment is an educated guess any options (???)
for pwd migration would be available from the password
 options dialog ??

any info on the operation of the password export server would
be well received - Technet seems a bit thin on searches for
this, and the readme.doc with ADMT2 is a bit brief - NO real
 specific questions here sorry !

it does also document issues with the migration of local user
profiles - any further confirmed instances of this

The PES is required if you want to migrate passwords from NT4 to W2K. It
can be installed on NT4 BDCs or PDCs, although the PDC is generally
preferable as ADMT talks to it anyway. The controller running the PES must
have the high encryption pack installed.

Dear All, have picked up many useful pointers towards a version of ADMT v2.0
that is shipped with .NET RC1 (i think).

keen to research the use of password export server and the processes of
password migration which is new to v2.0

on the basis of planned migration from a source NT4 domain to Win2k, have
reviewed the Technet document Chapter 9: migration of Windows NT4.0 account

I'm surprised. I thought the whole point of the PES was that it necessary to allow
passwords to be migrated?

Anyone else with experience of this?

No, I don't think it does this (it certainly didn't in the first version). Several of
the 3rd party migration tool vendors offer this feature.

It should also be fairly easy to write something of your own to clear the attribute
value. I dare say Richard Puckett probably has something lying around which does
this! :-)

Is ADMT v2.0 also able to clean up the SID history once everything has been
successfully migrated from the old NT world ?

Thanks,

Yes, it really is possible, as long as your target domain is in native mode.

No, I don't think it does this (it certainly didn't in the first version).
Several of the 3rd party migration tool vendors offer this feature.

It should also be fairly easy to write something of your own to clear the
attribute value. I dare say Richard Puckett probably has something lying
around which does this! :-)

Title: Message

Yes -
emphatically YES! We've migrated 1000's of users in our own environment
due to a need to go from one forest to another. So I can tell you for
certain that it is qucik, painless, and simple.

You do
require two items to insure success:

1. Target domain must be in Native Mode
2. Password key server designated on the source domain - the PDC
Emulator is the right choice. It's really the creation of a 'certificate'
to allow migration of the password.

All of
this is clearly documented in the ADMT doc's.

Can I use this tool to migrate users from a parent domain to a child domain
within the same forest?

Yes, it really is possible, as long as your target domain is in native mode.

Hello,
Can somebody confirm that it is really possible to migrate accounts +
passwords from a W2K forest to another W2K forest with the ADMT v2.0 tool?

Joeri

Title: Message

Thanks
for the answers.

It
seems that the tooldoesn't work perfectlyin this scenario (DomainA
DomainB are disconnected), we're currently looking into
it:

1. Add
DC (laptopA) to DomainA
2. Add
DC (laptopB) to DomainB
3.
Pull laptopA out off DomainA after sync
4.
Pull laptopB out off DomainB after sync
5.
Install ADMT v2.0 on laptopA
6.
Perform migration of Users from DomainA to DomainBfrom LaptopA to
LaptopB
7. Put
LaptopA LaptopB back in Domains
8.
Demote Laptops

Any
suggestions to this scenario? Do the FSMO-roles play a role (does LaptopA or
LaptopB require a special FSMO role)?

Greets,
