RE: [ActiveDir] Server Disappeared
That sounds goofy that you needed a new MAC address. However if that is what they said, no use arguing with the rain. You just get wet. You don't need to swap the physical hardware around, most desktop/server NICs allow you to specify what MAC address they are. Just change that. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Harald Sent: Thursday, November 24, 2005 1:54 PM To: ActiveDir@mail.activedir.org Subject: [ActiveDir] Server Disappeared Yesterday morning I had to change my Win2k Server up a bit. I wanted a new static IP address, and the ISP told me that in order to do that, I needed a new NIC (MAC Address). So, I switched the cables on the back of the server, and got the new IP for my external card. I then reversed the settings on both NIC's, so that my (new) internal card used the old internal settings, and the (new) external card used the old external settings. I double-checked the DNS server settings, and they were properly updated. I don't use DHCP internally, so I figured that should be all that I needed to do. However, I have lost my internal network connectivity. The DFS no longer works, from my network machines to the server, though it does work from the server out. I also can no longer connect to the printer which is connected through the server. When I try to map an external drive, when I click on the browse button, all the machines show up except for the server. I've checked each of the workstations, and they can all connect to each other, but as far as they are concerned, the server does not exist. Obviously there is something on the server that I missed, but I have no idea where to even start looking. Can anyone help me to figure this out? Thanks. -- Harald Gill Without Dreams...Life is Nothing List info : http://www.activedir.org/List.aspx List FAQ: http://www.activedir.org/ListFAQ.aspx List archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/activedir%40mail.activedir.org/ List info : http://www.activedir.org/List.aspx List FAQ: http://www.activedir.org/ListFAQ.aspx List archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/activedir%40mail.activedir.org/

Ken Schaefer burped the following on 24/11/2005 8:25 PM: Did you say that you can ping the internal NIC by IP address or name from a workstation? Yes. If so, it would appear that you have TCP/IP running just fine, and you have some other issue. What you mean by Internally, using normal network protocols, I see nothing of the server, AD, or anything. I'm not sure. TCP/IP is a normal protocol, and you can reach the server using TCP/IP. What I mean is non-tcp protocols. So, something else is up. What exactly are you attempting to do? And what's happening as a result? Please list any error messages you are seeing. Prior to switching the NICs, my network was running fine. The server is a DC, and I had no problem connecting to the domain, with old, and new systems. Full access to the DFS, the printer connected to the server...hell, I could SEE the server under My Network Places\Entire Network\Microsoft Windows Network\Starfleet3. Now, when I go there, I see every machine EXCEPT the server. I have two new machines from a client here that I am configuring to use our software, and they are connected to the hub that is connected to the server, and I can see the workgroup name that they are running under, and I can see the machines, and their shares, AND I can map their drives to my machine, but the server is nowhere to be found. Additionally, if you look in your Windows Event Logs, do you see anything that might help shed light on the situation? I've attached the latest system log to this message, but I'm not a networker, I'm an application developer, and I know enough to network a database application, but if something goes wrong with the network itself, I'm completely lost. Now with the caveat that the only way I know is the SBS way which is point inward for DNS and then you do root hints/or forwarders, if this was a SBS box I'd be telling you to get rid of that 154.11.128.187 on the internal nic. See how our DNS points inward on both nics? But I'm not sure how you have yours set up. I forwarded you the screen shot of the WINS section of the tcp/ip where there's a little check box to enable netibios over tcp/ip. Mine are checked for that inside nic. Re: [ActiveDir] Server Disappeared
If this was an SBS box and a DC I'd be majorly wincing and telling you to use the change IP address wizard... if we do it manually we do this: How do I move my server to new hardware: http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?PageContentID=324tabid=141 We do this trick of installing loopback adapters to 'hold' the internal gunk stuff before we move cards. Did you do that? Harald wrote: Yesterday morning I had to change my Win2k Server up a bit. Did you do that? I guess you better start wincing... :) It is a DC (SBS box?). All I did was switch the cables on the back of the machine. Then, I opened the properties for the card that is now external, and I copied the settings. Then I opened the properties for the card that is now internal, and copied those settings. Once that was done, I copied the settings to the (new) external card, and then did the same for the (new) internal card. No cards were physically removed or changed, only which network cable was plugged in where was changed. After that I rebooted the machine. Once the reboot was complete, I checked the DNS, which now showed the new IP for my external card. I had hoped that that would be it, but it wasn't. I can get access to the Internet, but I cannot see the server. It's as though the server has dropped from the network. Yet at the same time, if I open up a commandline window, and ping the server by name, I get a response (TCP protocols, I guess are still working?). I checked the protocols installed for each NIC, and they are all there, with the internal NIC having them all active. What protocols do I need to have installed for internal networking? Right now I have IPX/SPX, NetBeui, and NetBios, as well as Client for MS networks, and File Printer sharing, all of which are enabled. -- Harald Gill Without Dreams...Life is Nothing List info : http://www.activedir.org/List.aspx List FAQ: http://www.activedir.org/ListFAQ.aspx List archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/activedir%40mail.activedir.org/

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 154.11.128.187 I'm assuming that's the two IP addresses there? Now with the caveat that the only way I know is the SBS way which is point inward for DNS and then you do root hints/or forwarders, if this was a SBS box I'd be telling you to get rid of that 154.11.128.187 on the internal nic. See how our DNS points inward on both nics? But I'm not sure how you have yours set up. I forwarded you the screen shot of the WINS section of the tcp/ip where there's a little check box to enable netibios over tcp/ip. Mine are checked for that inside nic. RE: [ActiveDir] Server Disappeared
Did you say that you can ping the internal NIC by IP address or name from a workstation? If so, it would appear that you have TCP/IP running just fine, and you have some other issue. What you mean by Internally, using normal network protocols, I see nothing of the server, AD, or anything. I'm not sure. TCP/IP is a normal protocol, and you can reach the server using TCP/IP. So, something else is up. What exactly are you attempting to do? And what's happening as a result? Please list any error messages you are seeing. Additionally, if you look in your Windows Event Logs, do you see anything that might help shed light on the situation?
