[Xastir] kiss off command to restore your tnc back to command mode
Learned a lot over the last two evenings. What I need help with is HOW to get the kiss off command into that text file so xastir will leave my tnc back in command mode. xastir default files in debian/ubuntu/mint are: tnc-start.sys and tnc-stop.sys in /usr/share/xastir/config/ Is there anyone with working files that would be willing to share this secret? [Xastir] setting up maps in xaster for newbies
Hello all: New to list and new to this computer. I'm running Mint 11 now and would like to use Xastir in both internet connected and non-internet connected mode. I used Xastir on my netbook and loaded up maps I downloaded from the internet (Tiger something?). The problem was that even after loading the maps, I couldn't get street labels figured out--it showed the streets but didn't identify the streets or highways. Basically, I'd like to download and use maps that will show street map detail and perhaps lakes/oceans and other major details. Xaster has tons of settings that are not all that easy for a non-map geek like me. So I guess my question is HOW to get these details and eliminate all the unnecessary details. As mentioned, once I loaded those maps, Xastir did slow down, but it was still better than no maps at all (which is what you get when using the .deb files). Anyway, I'd like to get it working on this computer, then find another netbook so I can duplicate the install and loan to fellow hams in my area. php web+apache recommendations
Hello list: I was going to instal php-nuke until I found the debian-legal thread regarding the licensing problems.. What I hope to do is find a package based on php that uses modules (rss, calendar, bb, etc). I am no webmaster, but I want to learn enough to get a good site up and running for our LUG. The goal is a clean front page with a small amount of rss feed and links to our content that is easy to keep updated. I also have examined the phpbb for forums, and it's already available and I plan to use it also. What I need to know is what else I need to install to get a off-line site up, then transfered over to our actual server. Is there a tasksel for this type of package, ready made? Thank you. Re: what app includes 'startx' command
Thank you all for the great information on 'startx' command. I will check the install and see if it somehow omitted the xclient! Also, the 'dlocate' command is a new one on me! I just installed it in my desktop and it is a *must have* applicatoin. I love Gnu! Thanks again. what app includes 'startx' command
Greetings: I'm testing the latest debian Sarge installer. It's improving, but . . . What application includes the startx command? I realize I can install xdm/gdm/whateverDM, but I like keeping things lite on the older computers. Anyway, I have x configured, I bet it'd display Fluxbox great, if I could only launch x :) Thank you. headless firewall application recommendation
Greetings: I am looking for recommendations for firewall/router software for Debian. I have looked over several packages, but I feel swamped. I used an old Woody CD for very basic install, updated kernel and then upgraded the system to Sarge. All is working great, so far. Now I want to use this computer as a firewall to connect other computers in the house LAN to the internet (safely). I am no expert and firewall rules cause me to stagger in my chair, so I am looking for a package that will set good default rules for the LAN, yet can be tweaked if I get the urge to open a port for a game etc. Also, the system will be without keyboard/mouse/monitor, so I want to avoid instlling X on it. TIA Wishing you well. _ Linux.Net --Open Source to everyone Powered by Linare Corporation http://www.linare.com/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: acroread/battery
Greetings: Batteries are something very near and dear to me since I am also an amateur radio operator. Today's laptops still have very poor charging circuits. If you really care about getting the absolute maximum use from your batteries, then I would suggest looking for an external battery charger/maintainer. Charging a battery in a laptop that is already warm (or even hot) is terrible. Quality chargers tap into not just the standing voltage, but also the temperature of the battery, and time. It will stop or slow charging when the batteries temperature rises too high (or too quickly). My old gateway (Solo 1200) battery is still giving me about 1 1/2 hours of use even though it is 4 years old. I usually take it out of the laptop and let it cool after extended use, then, when it and the laptop are both cool to the touch, I plug the battery back in and let it charge. This is a poor person's way of getting the best performance from the battery. I haven't actually looked for such a (external) charger, but I know there are many companies that provide very versatile chargers and generic leads to charge everything from cell phone batteries to my amateur radio batteries. I've been looking around trying to find a good price for batteries, but so far, I haven't been very impressed with the pricing. Anyone have a good lead on the best place to buy batteries without completely draining one's bank account? I am still of the opinion that I don't need to recommend AV software to new users. However, I have a better understanding of those who do recommend such software to selected computer users. anti-virus software for Gnu/Linux
Greetings: I have read several opinions regarding AV for Gnu/Linux. The last one is Rick's rant http://www.linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/index.php?page=virus. However, the information is dated. So what is the opinion now-a-days? I just read a post last week where a new Gnu/Linux user strongly advocates AV for all new users. The claim was something along the line of What if I send you an Email with an executable attachment like [cd, rm -r]. I still don't buy the claim that I need AV on my box, but I'm also very open to sound security advice. Thanks so much. apt upgrade stops with foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1)
I did an update and dist-upgrade today (8Jan04) and all went well (as I expected it to) until I got to foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1). Xterm snip After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used. Setting up foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1) ... Configuration file `/etc/foomatic/filter.conf' == File on system created by you or by a script. == File also in package provided by package maintainer. What would you like to do about it ? Your options are: Y or I : install the package maintainer's version N or O : keep your currently-installed version D : show the differences between the versions Z : start a new shell to examine the situation The default action is to keep your current version. *** filter.conf (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?y Here is where the system just hangs out for lack of a better descriptor. The terminal is okay but the script is just sitting here. Several hours have passed and it's still just sitting there--no errors--just sitting there doing nothing at all! I've killed it several times and restarted, but it always does the same thing. How do I get this script to finish? Thank you. Re: apt upgrade stops with foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1)
Thanks Christopher. That did the trick nicely! And thanks to the quick response team! Sarge is really beginning to look and feel good. snipped from web archive I just did an apt-get update and this new package (3.0.0-20031207-1.1) installed flawlessly. I'm running Sarge, too, so everyone affected should now have access to the fix.
