There are at least two ways of installing flash: one is to do it on a
per-user basis in which case you'll find the plugin in
~/.mozilla/.../plugins (sorry, I forget the proper path name) and the
other way is to install the flash-plugin rpm -- you can do that from a
yum repo. I'd definitely recommend installing from a yum repo because
that way you don't have to keep manually checking for updates. However,
if you do install a system-wide flash plugin you'll have to delete the
per-user plug-in otherwise you'll be running the old one.

I'm running that same version of the flash plug-in on my Fedora 8 system
and I can cheerfully run mplayer and firefox playing flash videos at the
same time.

You're much, much better off just upgrading to the latest Flash plugin.

It fixes a few other annoying bugs: the right click menu is now
rendered in the native widget set rather than the ugly Flash one, and
you can now scroll through Flash applets with the mouse wheel, without
Flash stupidly trapping and discarding the events.

Also AV sync is MUCH better.

I have upgraded to the latest Flash 9.0.115.0 from adobe.com, but it did not
change anything.

There is no such problem on Ubuntu, but they run gnash instead. I have tried to
remove flash from Adobe and install gnash on my Fedora, but it did not work at
all - it appears as if it starts loading and never starts playing.

[Alsa-user] two apps using sound

2008-01-03 Thread Alexander Saydakov
Hi!

Please help me to understand if this is a fundamental issue in Alsa or just a
misconfiguration in my system.

Symptoms:

Amarok or Mplayer can not initialize sound after watching a clip from Youtube
in Firefox. It takes closing the Firefox to release the sound system.

Fedora 7 with kernel 2.6.23.8-34

Thanks.

Apps that use the old OSS API block the soundcard if your sound device
lacks hardware mixing.

Upgrade to the latest Flash plugin which uses ALSA and software mixing
will work.
