[amsat-bb] AO-51 trasatlantic QSO possible now

2009-12-11 Thread Luc Leblanc

Each 3 days AO-51 footprint reach eastern NA and Europe. This very early
morning pass here at 0855 UTC put in range of the east of North
America (me...at least): Northern Europe and most of Scandinavia. The next
similar pass will be on Monday December 14 at 0837 UTC. This
pass will cover from a line starting at the South of Spain to the north border
of Italy covering near the whole western European continent
UK as well Scandinavia will also be in range.

Signal on this morning low pass about 7 deg here was Q5 S6 to S7. If there is
any takers i can set my alarm clock to be QRV next Monday
morning but i know it is a working day could be not the best pass to have a lot
of stations but it is not a too bad thing considering the
limitation of a one channel sat.

Best time to have a look over the Atlantic from FN36KA.

Best way is comparing with a no directional antenna before and after the
clip over of the sat. But that's to late for that now. Perhaps we can start
start to messure and after next clip over we can start al over again so we
can compare the data. Messurements must be done with several passes and same
equipment.

Onderwerp: [amsat-bb] Loosing the north!!!

Again my Alfa Spid AZ rotor act again yesterday evening it loose his north
setting as it is electronicly set with the control box. Very
easy to reset but in the middle of a snow storm (25cm) i was unable to find
something to point the beam physically to the north.

At the same time there was an AO-51 pass i adjust the rotor to an estimated
north and i follow the whole pass manually writing down the
real calculated azimuth and the one i got from a maximum signal swinging the
rotor back an forth.

I make another pass doing the same operation to fined tuned my pointing and
today on the 1549 EDT pass i was able to get the satelllite at
1 degrees AOS ans LOS!! signal was S7 most of the time and reaching S9 near
TCA?

I don't know if AO-51 is still pointing towards the southern hemisphere but
i notice only one deep fade and signal was much better than the
first attitude change days and i think he never was so strong?

I'm guessing my scientific previous north pointing was bad or my UHF beam
is shooting not towards he point? I'm always using automatic AZ
tracking could be i was shooting aside of the target for a while...

Just try this on a pass could be you will be astonish too?

If AO-51 was returned back to his normal attitude i will have to reavaluate
all of what i wrote above.

2009-12-11 Thread John Heath
Hi Luc,

No satellite capability at present but I can confirm for anyone on the BB who
hasn't tried it,  transatlantic contacts are perfectly possible via AO-51.
With most of Europe out of the footprint you will probably have the satellite
to yourselves.

Another great time to try, when the passes are sutiable is around midnight UTC
into western USA and Canada. 5W is plenty. Just Nortyh amarica, Scandinavia and
Scotland in the footprint.

[amsat-bb] Re: G-5500 problem

2009-12-11 Thread Alan P. Biddle
Hi,

Another reason not to put the capacitor in the rotator is that it is exposed
to large temperature swings, which will definitely shorting its life.

Hi Paul, KW7Y

To put a critical component like an electrolitic Bi-Polar capacitor
inside the G-5500 rotator is a very bad idea from Yaesu because if
the capacitor shorts out then it is necessary to dissable the antennas.

You are fortunate enought that your capacitor only looses capacity.

Much better is the old KR-500 with it's capacitor inside the control
box.

By the way.problem solved !

I think I have confirmed that the problem is the
motor capacitor. I have connected a 47uF Bi-Polar
Cap across the motor connections in the shack,
which is effectively across the 100uF up at the
motor (unless a limit switch opens), and all
seems to be working in both directions now.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The current is about 2A when stuck or moving. (Same in both directions)

I can get it to move if I up the voltage a little
with a series transformer. Nominal voltage is
about 28V in the shack. By adding 10V it moves
fine. So temporarily I will add a series voltage
to kick start it, until the wx warms up and I can service the rotor.

 I suppose that you measure:

 Between A6 and A4 for CCW = 4.4 ohm
 Between A6 and A5 for CW= 4.4 ohm

I suggest you to put an AC ammeter 5 Amps f.s. in series between the
common terminal A6 of the control box and the wire coming up to A6
 in the motor.

In this condition the AC current running CW or CCW must be about
 the same.

If the current increases when the motor stuks in CW position then there
is a mechanical problem inside the rotator.

If the current is low when the motor stucks in CW position probably the
capacitor C 35 losted capacity and if the current is zero probably the
limit switch SW-7 inside the rotator is defective.

Unfortunately if the AC capacitor C35 = 100 uF AC wich is connected
between A4 and A5 inside the rotator losted capacity you cannot measure
 its capacity from the shack.

The motor is a brusheless AC asyncronous motor using the starting
capacitor C 35 to produce a 90° phase shift between both windings.

I have a G-5500 that sometimes will not turn clock wise(CW) but will
turn counter clockwise (CCW) OK. When it is working OK in both
directions each winding (CW and CCW) measures about 4.4 Ohms in the
shack. When it will not turn CW that winding measures about 2.2 ohms
(The CCW winding still measures 4.4 ohms).

The Controller is fine, so the problem is in the motor.

   Does this motor have brushes?

Any thoughts on what the problem might be?

   Thanks

I have 24 elements UHF linear yagi and after the switch i got a lot of small
fades with a huge one. When i realign correctly the antenna
all those small fades disappear and i got only one small one per pass. I agree
it's not the best way to test it but my main concern was my
correct alignment to the north and i can confirm it was effective as i am able
now to hear many satellites from 1 degrees up to half a
degree at LOS.

Thank's John i will check it and you're right this morning 0355EDT (0855UTC) i
was alone on the satellite over the Atlantic At a time in
the pass the footprint touch Europe Greenland Africa and the Caribbean Islands.

There is also other pass but they are too far east from FN36 to be workable but
the Canadian maritime provinces especially Newfoundland is
often available on many pass but i never hear a station from there on satellite.

Wondering if XW-1 was launched. I saw that China has just launched the

Not quite yet. The Yaogan launch was from a different facility and on a
different vehicle. I have seen a few posts on space forums rumoring that
the launch may be next week sometime. It is supposed to launch on a
CZ-2C from Taiyuan.

[amsat-bb] Testimonial for Erich, DK1TB (SatPC32)

2009-12-11 Thread Peter Sils

I would like to thank Erich, DK1TB for performing a change to his program to
help me accomplish what I needed to do.

I wanted to run my Yaesu G-5500 with my ST-1 controller (Fox Delta) with just
the AZ rotor and not use the EL rotor (antenna's in the attic so can't use EL).
The ST-1 would not continue to track AZ unless it received data from the EL
rotor. Erich sent me a modified version of SatPC32 that would output the EL
data as 0 and thus made the ST-1 function in just AZ.

Erich has supported me with every question and now went way beyond the call of
duty to modify his program - for me!

I have used other tracking software and have NEVER received support like I have
experienced from Erich!

Whats more is that he donates his revenue from SatPC32 to AMSAT!
He does this all for nothing!

My hat goes off to Erich for being an outstanding citizen in the AMSAT
community!
THANK YOU Erich!!

If you have not looked at SatPC32 I recommend you do:

While I am at it I would also like to thank Dinesh VU2FD - Fox Delta:
http://foxdelta.com/
for all of his support regarding his ST-1 3 that I own. They are a true value
and the support is excellent from Dinesh! TNX also to Dinesh!

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas. I received my Christmas present
early from Erich!

Yes,
Hats off the Erich! This is yet another example of how accommodating he
is to the users of this wonderful software.
I don't know if other's asked for it as well but some while back I
asked him about the absence of a countdown timer for AOS/LOS and within
days he sent me a version of the program that included it. It has now
been incorporated as a regular feature for quite sometime and I use it
all the time. I've also been impressed with the quick responses I've
gotten to any questions I've had. Thanks Erich!!

[amsat-bb] Top 10 sats

2009-12-11 Thread Jean-François Ménard
Hi Guys,

As a beginner, I'm always asked wich top 10 sats people are listening
too most of the time !?!?

I heard for the first time tonight CO-66 It was very interesting to
discover a voice message beacon followed by a digital picture
transmission never tought about a sat like this.

Wich top 10 sats could be in my list !?!? It could be a kind of survey

I only have 2 Eggbeater antennas V+U with AR² preamps combined with my
FT-736R.

Thank for your time !
