[android-beginners] Using C++ calls from Java

2008-12-11 Thread Smarticat

Prolog is preferable in order to take advantage of the natural
language processing capabilities of the Prolog language, and hence I
am interested in using Prolog to write apps for Android. It's clear
from the FAQ that Android only supports applications written using the
Java programming language at this time.

However, if the C++ code can compile to target the Android, and the
Android can have binary files loaded onto it, then you could develop
applications using Prolog and call them from Java for deployment on
the phone.

Is that possible?

[android-beginners] Where are the emulator files?

Simple question, I've searched the web, I've searched the groups, and
I simply can't figure this one out.

Where are the emulator files located? In particular, when an app is
installed on the emulator, say by running it from Eclipse, or
alternatively, when an app running on the emulator creates a data file
(in its private Android file system space for example), where do these
files go? Where can I see them on my computer so I can debug the file
output and make sure it's correct?

Thanks.

[android-beginners] Re: Run with Eclipse

2008-12-11 Thread filbert

The code looks ok... you'll need to provide the specific error.

On the left side of the screen there should be a little red x where
the error is. If you hover over it, it should tell you what the
problem is.

Or, you can look for a tab called problems in one of the toolbar
areas. If you can't find it you can go to Window Show View Other
 General Problems to open it. Then you can see where all your
errors are, double click them and it will take you to the point in
code where the error is.

[android-beginners] Customizing tutorial notepad, cannot see record that was just added

2008-12-11 Thread filbert

I'm trying to customize the sample notepad app. I want to add items
automatically from another source (an array, a web service, whatever,
it's hard coded right now) instead of having the user enter them.
After the item is added to the db (via the menu), I want the item
details to be displayed.

Right now, the item is successfully added to the list, but I just get
a blank screen. If I hit back, the item appears in the list and if I
click on the item in the list, I can see the details without a
problem.

The code for displaying the details after adding a new item is nearly
identical to just displaying the details alone (except for the method
to actually add it to the database). Both are using the same layout
XML (maybe that's a problem?) so I'm not sure where the breakdown is.
Maybe I'm missing some understanding of the XML UI...

The only thing I can tell that is really different is that the rowId
is automatically added to the Intent extras when clicking on the list
item, but not when choosing to add a new item from the menu (since the
rowId isn't known yet). I tried adding the rowId into the Intent
extras, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

I tried forwarding to the View activity after adding to the DB, which
worked, but then I had issues with the back button and figured I'd go
with this simpler (though redundant) strategy until I can figure out
what I'm doing wrong.

Any thoughts?

Here is the relevant calling code from the main class:. It should
look a lot like the tutorial...

@Override
public boolean onMenuItemSelected(int featureId, MenuItem item) {
switch(item.getItemId()) {
case REFRESH_ID:
refreshVerse();
return true;
}

return super.onMenuItemSelected(featureId, item);
}

private void refreshVerse() {
Intent i = new Intent(this, VerseRefresh.class);
startActivityForResult(i, ACTIVITY_REFRESH);
}

@Override
protected void onListItemClick(ListView l, View v, int position,
long id) {
super.onListItemClick(l, v, position, id);
Intent i = new Intent(this, VerseView.class);
i.putExtra(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_ROWID, id);
startActivityForResult(i, ACTIVITY_VIEW);
}

And here is my Add item class (which I call refresh):

public class VerseRefresh extends Activity {

private VerseDbAdapter mDbHelper;
private Long mRowId;
private TextView mVerseDate;
private TextView mVerseNumber;
private TextView mVerseText;

@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

mDbHelper = new VerseDbAdapter(this);
mDbHelper.open();

setContentView(R.layout.verse_details);

mVerseDate = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.verseDate);
mVerseNumber = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.verseNumber);
mVerseText = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.verseText);

// since this is a new row, there will not be any id in the
savedInstanceState.
//mRowId = savedInstanceState != null ?
savedInstanceState.getLong
(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_ROWID) : null;
//if (mRowId == null) {
//  Bundle extras = getIntent().getExtras();
//  mRowId = extras != null ? extras.getLong
(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_ROWID) : null;
//}
getVerse();

Intent i = getIntent();
i.putExtra(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_ROWID, mRowId);

populateFields();

}

@Override
protected void onPause() {
super.onPause();
// not needed
//saveState();
}

@Override
protected void onResume() {
super.onResume();
populateFields();
}

@Override
protected void onSaveInstanceState(Bundle outState) {
super.onSaveInstanceState(outState);
outState.putLong(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_ROWID, mRowId);
}

private void populateFields() {
if (mRowId != null) {
Cursor note = mDbHelper.fetchVerse(mRowId);
startManagingCursor(note);

mVerseDate.setText(note.getString(note.getColumnIndexOrThrow
(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_VERSE_DATE)));

mVerseNumber.setText(note.getString(note.getColumnIndexOrThrow
(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_VERSE_NUMBER)));

mVerseText.setText(note.getString(note.getColumnIndexOrThrow
(VerseDbAdapter.KEY_VERSE_TEXT)));

I am creating an application that times how long it takes to open

[android-beginners] WebView and G1 flipping

Hello all,

I have an application which is using a WebView object to navigate some
web pages that we provide. I notice that when I run the application
on the G1, and flip the phone open (to enter text into a form) the
WebView reloads the content - and as it's an ajax generated page, it
ends up back at the main menu.

Is there any way to capture the being flipped open event and change
the aspect ratio of the web page without reloading it? Failing that,
is there at least a way to prevent it from reloading?

Have you gone through the tutorial on that as well? That steps you

Also, if this is your first time using Java, you may want to check out

and learn about some of Java's quirks and such.

What other coding experience do you have?

 No. If you want to look up widgets by Strings, I think you will need to

[android-beginners] Re: Eclipse Debugging Question

2008-12-11 Thread filbert

Have you stepped through the code to ensure that every line is getting
executed as expected and checked the variables list to make sure all
the expected values are set?

The one thing I am curious about is these lines:
   todoItems.add(0, myEditText.getText().toString());
myEditText.setText();

I haven't used in Java in a good 2 years, so I could be forgetting the
specifics, but since Java handles everything as pointers behind the
scenes, when you call setText(), the pointer that you is created by
todoItems.add() may also be getting set to and therefore comes out
blank. Try commenting out the setText(); and see if that does
anything.

Josh Dobbs wrote: Can you elaborate on building a map or point me to the

You indicated you wanted to be able to find a View by some String name.
Since Views are not stored anywhere by a String name, you will have to
make this mapping yourself. The standard Java interface for mapping one
value to another is java.util.Map, and the typical implementation of
that is java.util.HashMap.

MapString, Integer widgetsByName=new HashMapString, Integer();

widgetsByName.put(why, R.id.btn1);
widgetsByName.put(you, R.id.btn2);
widgetsByName.put(want, R.id.btn4);
widgetsByName.put(this, R.id.btn5);
widgetsByName.put(is, R.id.btn5);
widgetsByName.put(beyond, R.id.btn6);
widgetsByName.put(my, R.id.btn7);
widgetsByName.put(understanding, R.id.btn8);

(where you would use your own String names and widget IDs)

Then, sometime later, given a String name, you could:

Button btn=(Button)findViewById(widgetsByName(name));

 What advantaged does a map have over an array?
In Java, arrays are indexed by integers, not Strings.

[android-beginners] Re: Customizing tutorial notepad, cannot see record that was just added

2008-12-11 Thread filbert

Well, I never figured it out, but while I was waiting I ended up doing
it in a cleaner way and got around my issues.

How long until I'm no longer a moderated noob???

On Dec 10, 12:04 pm, filbert filbert...@gmail.com wrote:

     @Override

     }

     private void refreshVerse() {

 Honestly, I would set aside a couple hours, head to BN or Borders and

 Or look for java books on Amazon and read the reviews.  I learned from

 I would go for Eclipse unless you're a die hard command prompt guy

[android-beginners] Re: Emulator file path?

2008-12-11 Thread David Turner
everything that is written to /data on the emulated device is stored on your
host machine
in a file named userdata-qemu.img, which is a disk image containing all of
/data.
It is located in a platform-specific directory.

it's normally in $HOME/.android/, and in the local application directory
on Windows,
which differ between XP and Vista. You can know which file exactly when you
use
the -verbose option when starting the emulator.

if you need to retrieve/add a file, use adb pull or adb push

 Simple question, I've searched the web, I've searched the groups, and

 Where are the emulator files located? In particular, when an app is
 installed on the emulator, say by running it from Eclipse, or
 alternatively, when an app running on the emulator creates a data file
 (in its private Android file system space for example), where do these
 files go? Where can I see them on my computer so I can debug the file
 output and make sure it's correct?

 Thanks.

In my defense, I don't require knowledge of Eclipse. Heck, *I* have
limited knowledge of Eclipse. It's more that I don't cover it in the

 the orders are being processed but there appears to be an issue with
 the shipping confirmation emails (more than one person has called in

 BUT, she did have the capability to look up my order and determine it
 will likely be a few days before it ships (hence no shipping confirm

 did) you probably won't get the device until mid-next week.

 Hope this helps,

 ends up back at the main menu.

 Is there any way to capture the being flipped open event and change
 the aspect ratio of the web page without reloading it? Failing that,
 is there at least a way to prevent it from reloading?

On the latter point, you may want to check out Part Four of my
Rotational Forces series on AndroidGuys:

This isn't so much a WebView thing as it is an Activity thing. WebView
is particularly troublesome, in that you can't control it quite the way
you do widgets and such.

 OR 2) Disable the cache, either through the UI or API?

 Help is very much appreciated,

Are you sure your server is serving the content with the appropriate

so I'm pretty sure it's going to honor these sorts of things.

If you're testing using the actual device and using the data network, it
is possible there is a transparent proxy somewhere in the midst of
T-Mobile that is screwing those things up. Try it using WiFi, or use the
emulator, and see if the problem persists.
