NoClassDef always points me to think about Classpath, or
inconsistencies between packages on your system (perhaps you are
running a different version of Android out of eclipse, and linking to

Maybe not that helpful, but something I was thinking about that may
point you to examine your system configuration, which is likely the
problem (as your code looks simple from what you have posted).

[android-beginners] Automatic Import causes crash ?

I'm not sure how it got there, but I had an Import for

As you can see I'm just starting out with Android. What are the rules

setListAdapter() and getExpandableListView() are methods that belong

[android-beginners] Re: Automatic Import causes crash ?

2009-08-11 Thread Balwinder Kaur (T-Mobile)

If your logcat output for the crash indicated that an Intent was not
found, then your problem is in the AndroidManifest.xml file.
You were trying to access an Intent that you hadn't declared in the
manifest file.
I use automatic imports (cmd-shift-o or ctrl-shift-o) all the time and
it works nicely for me :)
Using them just before building the class should not cause a problem.
The only problem I have seen is if there are two classes by the same
name in two difference packages and you inadvertently pick the wrong
one for your import like Log class or Camera class or sometimes the
R.java class if it was a eclipse version for an older version of
Android.

[android-beginners] Re: AppWidget Initialization. How to do it properly.

2009-08-11 Thread alkar

Any views? :)

On Aug 8, 4:51 am, alkar alcarlo...@gmail.com wrote:
 I'm trying to figure out how to do some initialization for a widget
 I'm developing. What I want to do is perform some actions as soon as
 the device boots. The preferable means would be to do it just before
 the phone shuts down, but from the research I've done there's no way
 to do that with the current API.

 So I would like to ask how would you suggest it be done. The
 initialization process consists of reading/writing some
 SharedPreference values.

 I've thought about employing a activity that does the initialization
 onCreate(), set as android:configure in the AppWidgetProvider xml,
 but that is not a good solution, since adding a second widget of the
 same kind would mean that initialization is done again, something I
 don't want happening.

 I've also read about BroadcastReceiver and BOOT_COMPLETED, but would
 that ensure that the initialization is done prior to the widgets'
 first onUpdate() call? I still have to try this.

 If there's any other means of performing that initialization prior to
 the widgets' first update on boot, I'd like to hear about it.

 As a sidekick here, I'd like to ask you one more thing. Currently, I'm
 saving two Preference values onUpdate() because I couldn't do it
 onPause() with a widget. Maybe I'm being too noob here and haven't
 understand how stuff work, but is that a bad solution? Is it too
 stressing for the device? Is there a better way to ensure the most
 recent data prior to shutdown are being saved? Should I employ a
 service?

 Thank you very much in advance :)

[android-beginners] Re: Operating Systems supported by Android Apps

2009-08-11 Thread midtoad

Maybe I'm missing something, but... your Android apps run on the
Android operating system.

While there are some experimental releases of 'live Android' CDs that
allow you to boot up a regular PC into the Android OS, up to now the
only commercially available devices that run Android are cellphones.
Soon however there will be Android-powered 'smartbooks', i.e. devices
that are somewhere between netbooks (small, internet-focused
notebooks) and cellphones.

[android-beginners] Re: Automatic Import causes crash ?

2009-08-11 Thread midtoad

This problem was also discussed in the on-line forum for the book
Hello, Android.

As Balwinder says, doing an automatic import can be a problem when
your class has the same name as a built-in class. Ed Burnette, the
book author, says he will change the name of Settings to something
like MySettings for the next edition of his book in order to avoid the
imports problem.

 I'm not sure how it got there, but I had an Import for
 android.provider.Settings which was causing problems in the Sudoko
 program in Hello Android  (excellent so far) book. It was giving a
 crash when the settings menu was chosen. The clue came in the debugger
 log where the problem was logged as Intent not found. Then I thought
 that the android.provider...was new, I'd not seen it before. I found
 the Import and removed it and Hey Presto!

[android-beginners] Re: Is there a simple way to...

2009-08-11 Thread Balwinder Kaur (T-Mobile)

Sorry, the design requirements of the problem are not very clear from
the description of the post.
Do you want to run the loop for a finite for every push down or only
while the button is pushed down.

Here are some ideas if they help solve your issue.

You can add View.OnKeyListener and View.OnTouchListener (if you want
to touch enable the button)

Implement the onKey method with something like this

 public boolean onKey(View v, int keyCode, KeyEvent event) {
 if (event.getAction() == KeyEvent.ACTION_DOWN){

while (myVariable != 0){
  myVariable--;
  audioAlert();
}
myVariable = 1000; // re-initialize
return true;
}else if (event.getAction() == KeyEvent.ACTION_UP){

return true;
}

return false;
}
If this is not what you are looking for, kindly give more details.
Also, for the audioAlert you may want to initialize it only once and
then just play a sound in the loop.

[android-beginners] AVD extremely slow...

2009-08-11 Thread WaltFromBavaria

Dear Developpers,

I created a 'Hello-World'-application on my PC and saw that the AVD is
very slow.
When I type text in the simulation, it takes several seconds until the
text appears in the

Possibly my PC is too slow. it's a single core AMD with 1.6 GHz

Are the simulations on your PCs running reasonably fast ?
I just want to make sure it's my PC.

[android-beginners] MediaPlayer and rtsp streaming problems

Hi

I have difficulties with rtsp streaming in MediaPlayer.
The code is quite straightforward:

android.media.MediaPlayer player = new

player.setDataSource(rtsp://stream.xxx.xxx.xxx/link.sdp);
//this
link is not alive, only for demo
player.prepare();

Prepare() throws an exception:

Has anybody else faced similar problems with MediaPlayer on android

btw: rtsp link works ok, cause I have tried it also from the web
browser in android, and it plays well.

[android-beginners] Need way to to auto-switch layout designs

2009-08-11 Thread dawnj2sb

I don't know a lot about *.properties files, but i think that is what
I'm looking for.

I'm creating a project that will first be released under one company
name, and then later under another company name. I have been asked to
design the project in a way that all i have to do is switch out a
value and the images/styling will update accordingly.

So let's say I have a file (not sure what type of file) that contains:

product=ob

Then I could set up my *.java and layout *.xml files something like
this:

JAVA: setContentView(R.layout.login_${product})
Layout: ImageView android:src=@drawable/logo_${product} /,
TextView style=@style/FormText${product} /
Styles: style name=Theme.AppBackground parent=android:Themeitem
name=android:windowBackground@drawable/back_theme_${product}/
item/style

Then all i do is change the value of 'product' in one file and
everything updates for the next build.

Does anyone know how to do this? Are there separate methods for doing
it in JAVA files vs XML files?

I've downloaded 2 version of the dev kit now:

http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r3/index.html

When I download and unpack, and look at RELEASE_NOTES.html in the top

Android 1.1 SDK, Release 1
February 2009

This is NOT the current Android SDK release.
Download the current Android SDK
The sections below provide an overview of the SDK package.

For more information on this SDK release, read the Release Notes.

Is this message just incorrect and needs fixing, or are the files I'm
downloading with 1.5 in the title really just 1.1 dev kits?

yours confusedly..

[android-beginners] Cached GPS info?

2009-08-11 Thread Andrés G. Aragoneses

Hi there,

I'm thinking about buying an HTC Hero for usage in the US. I don't plan
to use it with 3G so I guess I'm fine. However, then I'm wondering, can
I use the GPS feature only when I'm connected via WiFi? Is there a way
to download GPS maps of a certain city to have them cached in the SD
card for its usage when there's no data connection?

Thanks,

Andres

Hi Jack,

I have the complete code now but the app force closes on my emulator.
Is it because the emulator doesn't support WiFi apps? and force closes

[android-beginners] Re: Cached GPS info?

2009-08-11 Thread John P.

Hi,

The GPS band and data bands are separate, so you can get GPS
information for free even if you don't have any carrier data plans.
Even if you don't have wifi, you can still pickup GPS information.
Note that accessing websites such as Google Maps requires data plan or
wifi connection. However, if you had mapping software that can
interpret the GPS signals, then you can have mapping + location app
without any internet connection. Key example is GPS navigation
system on cars -- they don't have internet connections (well, some
may, but they're not necessary for the GPS nav system).

To relate to your case, I have a dev G1 phone that I can setup to use
on wifi to use Google Maps and GPS for location information. In this
scenario, it doesn't use my ATT data plan.

Generally, you do not need an IntentFilter for that situation. Just
reference the class directly when building the Intent you pass to

[android-beginners] Re: Two questions

2009-08-11 Thread tinyang

Well my problem now is that I am trying to start the SubActivity on the
button click, but when I run it in the emulator, it does not Launch the
SubActivity, and I can't figure out why. Here is all of my code:

public class MainMenu extends Activity {
/** Called when the activity is first created. */
Button guidebtn = null;
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main); //xml file that has the layout needed
guidebtn = (Button) findViewById(R.id.guide); //find the button from
the xml layout
}
public class guide extends Activity {
public Button onClick(View guide){
startActivity(new Intent(this, SubActivity.class));
return guidebtn;
};
}
}

What am I missing?

Well, the startActivity() statement seems OK.

How to do that in Android? Can anyone please provide me the links

Note: I know about developer.android.com website already.

I think you need to spend some more time with some tutorials, such as:

http://developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/notepad/index.html

1. You have not connected a View.OnClickListener to your Button

2. Your guide class is unused, and probably should not be there, with
your onClick() implementation being moved to the View.OnClickListener
you have not set up

The Notepad tutorial, linked to above, will demonstrate how to use a Button.

[android-beginners] saving data to text file using eclipse

2009-08-11 Thread Saeed

Hi everyone,

I am trying to save data to my google phone G1. I am able to create
the text file in sdcard by using the following code in eclipse :

//++
try {
FileWriter f = new FileWriter(/sdcard/test.txt);
} catch (IOException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block
e.printStackTrace();
}
//+

but I am not able to save any data to the created file. I found this
code from http://www.anddev.org/working_with_files-t115.html; which
says I can write to text file by running this code.

//+++
try { // catches IOException below
  final String TESTSTRING = new String(hello);

  FileOutputStream fOut = openFileOutput(/sdcard/test.txt,

MODE_WORLD_READABLE);
  OutputStreamWriter osw = new OutputStreamWriter(fOut);

  // Write the string to the file
  osw.write(TESTSTRING);
  // ensure that everything is
  // really written out and close
  osw.flush();
  osw.close();

  } catch (IOException ioe) {
  ioe.printStackTrace();
 }
//+

I run it but I do not see any change in my file.
first, I thought my problem is permission to file. The permission
setting on my phone is:

data:   drwxrwx--x
sdcard:   d---rwxrwx
system:   drwxr-xr-x

would you please help me in either in correcting the code or finding a
way to save data into text file (saved in sdcard or the phone) in
eclipse environment

thanks in advance

[android-beginners] Re: saving data to text file using eclipse

2009-08-11 Thread Jack Ha

Context.openFileOutput() opens a private file associated with this
Context's application package for writing and the name of the file to
open can not contain path separators.

Try this:

   try {
   File root = Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory();
   if (root.canWrite()){
   File f = new File(root, test.txt);
   FileWriter fw = new FileWriter(f);
   BufferedWriter out = new BufferedWriter(fw);
   out.write(Hello world);
   out.close();
   }
   } catch (IOException e) {
   }

[android-beginners] App crashes when creating UI

2009-08-11 Thread kch

Hi there. I'm just starting out with android and have two questions:

1) I'm trying to invoke a UI using the following method:

public class Main extends Activity {
@Override
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

new BasicUI( ).myView( );
}
}

public class BasicUI extends Activity {
public void myView( ) {
setContentView(R.layout.main);
// etc...
}
}

but it crashes with: Application has stopped unexpectedly. What am I
doing wrong?

2) How do I debug problems like this. I've tried the adb logcat but
there weren't any standard Java stack traces from the app crash. I
guess android does something different, what should I be doing or
looking for?
