[android-developers] Understanding `installPackageLI` and why it kills apps with associations to the package it is updating.

2019-08-22 Thread 'James Deeman' via Android Developers
Hi all,

*Disclaimer: I'm new to the group and primarily looking for answers about
something I don't fully understand. Please let me know if I should be
posting this elsewhere.*

Essentially i'm looking to get answers to a stack overflow question
.

I have updated and improved the question and even offered a bounty, but no
one seems to be able to answer it. In addition I can't find any information
in standard documentation about the ActivityManager log regarding
`installPackageLI` and it's usage.

Some background about the project; it is a live live service game with many
daily active users. The game is written in Unity and build across a few
platforns. In QA we sometimes get crash reports that look like the one in
the SO question, which look like this;

3034  3049 I ActivityManager: Force stopping com.android.chrome appid=10115
user=-1: installPackageLI
3034  3049 I ActivityManager: Killing
963:com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox:search/u0a80 (adj 500): stop
com.android.chrome,installPackageLI
3034 3049 W ActivityManager: Scheduling restart of crashed service
com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/com.google.android.apps.gsa.shared.util.keepalive.StandaloneKeepAlive$KeepAliveService

in 1000ms
3034 3049 W ActivityManager: Scheduling restart of crashed service
com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/com.google.android.apps.gsa.nowoverlayservice.DrawerOverlayService

in 10999ms
3034  3049 I ActivityManager: Killing 1709:com.my.app/u0a292 (adj 0): stop
com.android.chrome,installPackageLI

Chrome is updated, which kills out app. That sort of make sense as we have
a dependency on it for WebViews used in ad providers. What I don't
understand is why it is allow to kill a foreground app, and it seems like
that would be something we can mitagate. I'm wondering if someone could
explain this process to me (what actually decides to update the Chrome
package like this in the first place) and whether we are able to avoid it
in anyway. It seems that others have had this problem

too, but I cannot find any advise on addressing it.

Anything that would increase my knowledge of what is happening here would
be great, even if it doesn't directly answer the question of how to avoid
this, so please don't be afraid to answe as i'm at a loss otherwise.

If you're asking about how to simulate on your computer an Android device with
your required sensors, you can check what sensors are available on this
documentation page: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/emulator.html

Re: [android-developers] New comer

2016-11-26 Thread James Noxon
I have this same problem. I am using a 32 bit version of Windows 10 on a 64
bit computer.
I don't see what the Android Studio is (32 or 64), in 'About' it just says
#AI-145.3360264 - is that a 64 bit version?
I am not going to be able to change the Windows. I just followed the
Android Studio installation instructions from
a online course in Ed X that I am working on. The course also requires
installing the HAXM plug-in, does that
require a 64 bit OS perhaps? In that case I am stuck.

Any suggestions?

thanks - PJ

[android-developers] TextView within ListView not visible (but still clickable) since upgrading to Android M.

2016-11-21 Thread James McKie
Came across a peculiar bug since upgrading my app to Android M. I have a
drawer layout which has a list view that is visible when the user swipes.
However, the TextViews that get rendered inside the ListView are not
visible on devices running Android M. Has anyone else faced this problem.
If so how did you solve it? Spent hours searching for a solution and can't
find one! Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

// Code within activity final DrawerLayout lay = (DrawerLayout)
findViewById(R.id.drawer_layout);
ImageView imgArrow = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.imgArrow);

mDrawerList = (ListView) findViewById(R.id.navList);
final String[] menuArray = {"Company Management", "Location Management"};

mAdapter = new ArrayAdapter<>(this, R.layout.item_list_item, menuArray);
mDrawerList.setAdapter(mAdapter);

mDrawerList.setOnItemClickListener(new AdapterView.OnItemClickListener() {

[android-developers] Do you still use your nexus 7 (2013)?

2016-08-16 Thread James Olson
Hey all! For those of you that own the nexus 7, uSell is purchasing used
tablets that are in good condition. If you are looking to get rid of your
nexus 7 or no longer use it, uSell will pay you to take it off your hands.
It would be best if it was in mint condition, but since they are
increasingly more difficult to acquire, uSell is willing to purchase it if
the hardware is working. If you have a 2nd gen nexus 7 you are looking to
part with, either reply to this comment or follow this link to establish a
transaction on uSell:

[android-developers] My First App Tool Bar Error

2016-02-06 Thread James Montgomery
I'm getting this error when running 'My First App' from Android Developer
tutorial:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: This Activity already has an action bar
supplied by the window decor. Do not request
Window.FEATURE_SUPPORT_ACTION_BAR and set windowActionBar to false in your
theme to use a Toolbar instead

My Acitivity_Display_Message.mxl looks like this:

http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android;
xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto;
xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools;
android:layout_width="match_parent"
android:layout_height="match_parent"
android:fitsSystemWindows="true"

tools:context="com.example.jamesmontgomery.myapplication.DisplayMessageActivity">

How do I solve this error?

I would assume that I would need to insert code like ' false' somewhere here?

I can include my java code if it will help, but I'm sure there error is in the
display message xml

[android-developers] Re: I can't "My first app working"

2016-02-06 Thread James Montgomery
I'm having the same problem as OP. My Activity_Display_Message.xml is
exactly the same as Haidar except for the Theme and popupTheme (Which I
don't think should make a difference in this case) and the addition of the
floating action button widget (the error comes up with and without the
widget).

I would expect the solution to this problem to look something like this:
false

Am I on the right track? Has anyone else encountered this issue?

Re: [android-developers] Android Taxi Booking App - Payment Mechanism by using Credit Card

2015-03-18 Thread James Ruffer
You could look at a couple of other options like braintreepayments.com who
started helping uber with their payments.
But really you are looking at becoming an aggregation payment provider but
it all depends on a number of things...
What currency are you using? Are you putting a hold on the estimated ride
and batching out after the ride is settled?
Are you allowing for tips? How are you handling change backs?

Thank you for your time.

 3. Does Goolgle In-App Billing only allow purchase items that already

[android-developers] Re: can _ever_ the intent received by a BroadcastReceiver onReceive() method be null?

2014-06-19 Thread James Wald
Without additional annotations, static analysis is going to warn that both
the Context and Intent may be null. This is due to the fact that the
broadcast receiver is an instantiable class and onReceive() is a public
method. For example:

new MyBroadcastReceiver().onReceive(null, null);

Adding @NonNull to the two parameters will allow you to forego null checks,
but you better hope the framework never calls onReceive() with null
arguments.

On Tuesday, July 9, 2013 2:46:41 AM UTC-10, MrMrs D wrote:

 In other words :

 @Override
 public void onReceive(Context context, Intent intent) {
 final String action = intent.getAction(); // can intent==null here
 ?
 }

 I need to solve this once and for all so please no ifs and buts. I would
 check for null but I suspect that it is not needed and therefore it is
 clumsy and inelegant to check. I had searched in the docs but have not
 found anything

[android-developers] Rear camera on my Samsung Tab 3 shows a white screen

2014-03-06 Thread James Black
Hello,
  I have been fighting with this for 3 days, and on my SurfaceView I am
getting a white screen from my rear camera, but the regular camera
application works fine.

  But, the front-face camera shows an image, so the SurfaceView appears to
be correct.

  I have tried this application: https://github.com/commonsguy/cwac-camera

  And I get the same results, which is why I finally decided to write.

  I also tried this fragment:
http://www.vogella.com/code/de.vogella.android.gallery/src/com/example/android/hcgallery/CameraFragment.html

  I am not certain how to troubleshoot this since it appears to be a
problem with my rear camera, but the camera does work with the camera
application.

  I also get Error 1001 which may be answered with
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14493593/android-camera-error-1001-what-the-heck-is-that

  I extended SurfaceView instead of ViewGroup but no improvement.

Thank you for any help.

 I am having networking issues in idle mode (when the screen is off).
 I have attached a test program called BeepTester, in order to explain my
 difficulties.
 This test program allows to start a service that in turn starts:
 = a periodic timer that sends a short UDP packet (to port 7000) to the
 localhost, every 4 seconds,
 = a thread that listens to the UDP port 7000 and that produces a beep
 sound after packet reception.

 On wakeup mode, everything goes fine, there is one beep every 4 seconds.
 In idle mode it depends on which device we use:
 On a Samsung Galaxy Note I, it works OK as in the wakeup mode.
 On a Samsung Galaxy S4, it stops working once the screen goes off (there
 are exceptions: we may hear some beeps occasionally, and not regularly).
 I have also tried to use various kinds of wavelocks (not included in the
 attached test) but It was not really effective.

 Is it normal?
 And do we need to use wakelocks in order to do networking in idle mode?

Re: [android-developers] Re: example source code or tutorial on using fragments and OpenGL ES 2.0

2013-08-04 Thread James Black
Basically, my program has some similarity, in use, as a graphing
calculator, but, the equation may be planetary orbits, and the user may
want to rotate the solar system to see how the planetary orbits change.
 That is why I am looking at OpenGL, rather than canvas.

The user will be able to make changes to equations, then I show them the
effects graphically.

But, not being able to have more than one SurfaceView means that using
Fragments won't work anyway. :(

Thank you.

 If you fancy OpenGL ES rendering capabilities then you should just have a
 single GLSurfaceView and implement swiping / paging yourself by capturing
 touch events and drawing the OpenGL ES scene accordingly.

 there is an icon and we can live with that. All other Nexus devices update

 By the way thank you RichardC for the article. Just read it. Indeed we
 broke the rule
 If the name of a main activity of your application is changed, any
 shortcuts the user made to it will no longer work. A shortcut is an Intent
 that directly specifies the ComponentName it should run.. In this case
 the OS Launcher being the user.

 If I force stop the Launcher it appears. It also appears on it's own
 after a long time - a few hours. Obviously it is not acceptable for user
 installations. Fresh installation doesn't have this problem.
 What could have possibly caused it - we have renamed the main activity
 of our product and changed the icon, but we are not sure is this really the
 reason. Like I mentioned it wasn't the problem at all until 4.2.2 came
 along. Any suggestion on what can be done in the project to make the new
 icon show up right away is very welcome.

[android-developers] WebView - Flash overlap issues in Android

2012-11-21 Thread James
platform: ARM7 based device
android version: ICS4.0
browser: android default browser

I am testing flash websites on android browser and observing that flash is
always overlapping over webview. So if any website contains any list
view/menu which falls above flash, always goes behind the flash with
android browser.

Below are the suggestions which I have tried already,
Override surfaceview add in WebView to change the zorder to false;
(setZOrderOnTop(false))
Changing html page setting to opaque or transparent
I have seen this working on GalaxyS2 with Google TV image (with Chrome
browser) on same platform.
In Chrome browser (GTV), WebKit rendering is done on above SurfaceView and
for Flash Video's it is using PluginWindow. So WebView always remains on
top of all other window. So no problem.
Interesting thing is, I have not found a single web reference which tells
the possibility of rendering Webpage over SurfaceView and there is no
reference about PluginWindow in android.

Quick suggestion/help required.

[android-developers] Using OpenGL ES 2.0 on camera buffers

2012-10-29 Thread James Hess
Hi,
I looked around yesterday for an answer to this but couldn't find a proper
way to do this. All of the answer were 'hacks' sort of, results in huge
loss in fps doing this.
I am wondering if there's an 'official' way to get camera buffer to GPU?
What I mean by that is:

a) Avoid converting from YUB to RGB (takes a lot of CPU cycles, drops fps)
b) Not copying the buffers (sort of like in iOS, where you can bind the
texture, and avoid expensive memcpy)
c) Save the buffers to a video file

It doesn't matter if I need to use the latest device and/or Android OS.
Just want to know the proper way of doing this or if it's still yet not
possible.

Thanks!

Re: [android-developers] KeyChain.getPrivateKey(Context,String) on Android 4.1?

2012-10-06 Thread James Yonan

 If it is indeed reproducible, it should be easy to fix. Have you tried
 building
 latest AOSP source, there have been a number of fixes/changes in this
 area? I fail to see how this is documented in the bug report though (no
 steps to reproduce).

Steps for me on Nexus 7 were:

1. import PKCS#12 file containing root cert, client cert, and private key

2. have app obtain an alias to the client cert

3. get the private key: PrivateKey pk = KeyChain.getPrivateKey(this, alias);

4. observe segfault when pk is collected by GC

  2. You say that the new OpenSSL engine supports only signing, verifying
 and
  key import. That's fine, but keep in mind that the RSA signature used
 for
  verification of an SSL session is typically generated by the cipher
 object
  javax.crypto.Cipher.getInstance(RSA/ECB/PKCS1PADDING) acting as an
  encryptor. Can java.security.Signature replicate this behavior? This
 issue
  is also documented here:
  http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11261774/using-android-4-1-keychain

 Again, are there any reasons you are using the Cipher class for signing?
 I don't think this is typical at all, but if you have a particular reason
 for wanting to use 'raw' RSA encryption, please say why. And, again,
 this is probably more suitable for andorid-security.

Raw RSA encryption is necessary as part of the challenge/response handshake
of an SSL/TLS negotiation, if your side of the connection is using a cert
as an authentication factor. It's essential for VPN implementations that
layer on top of SSL/TLS transport and need to interoperate with an external
key store. I enumerated the signature algs provided by the AndroidOpenSSL
1.0 provider and I don't see any implementation for raw RSA. Some Java
implementations include it as NONEwithRSA, but I don't see it here.

Yes, I'll try to move this over to android-security. Thanks for your time.

Re: [android-developers] KeyChain.getPrivateKey(Context,String) on Android 4.1?

2012-10-05 Thread James Yonan
There is a problem in 4.1 with apps that need to create a signature using a
private key in the keychain. In particular, apps that establish SSL client
sessions (such as OpenVPN) would use code such as this to allow an SSL
negotiation to use a client cert/key from the keychain:

import java.security.PrivateKey;
import javax.crypto.Cipher;

. . .

PrivateKey privateKey = KeyChain.getPrivateKey(context, alias);
if (privateKey) {
  byte[] data;
  Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance(RSA/ECB/PKCS1PADDING);
  cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, privateKey);
  byte[] signed_bytes = cipher.doFinal(data);
}

This code now fails badly on 4.1 (testing on Nexus 7) even
though KeyChain.getPrivateKey returns a non-null value for privateKey. It
not only fails to work, but causes a segfault later when privateKey is
garbage collected.

I understand that on 4.1, private keys might be offloaded to hardware, but
still the code above should work because it's not accessing the key
directly -- it is only performing an encrypt operation using the key.

What is the proper way to do this on 4.1?

Re: [android-developers] KeyChain.getPrivateKey(Context,String) on Android 4.1?

 but

 directly
  -- it is only performing an encrypt operation using the key.

 Not quite. You are feeding it to the Bouncy Castle provider, which knows
 nothing about native keys and thus cannot use your key. I agree that it
 should be better documented, but the new OpenSSL engine supports
 only signing, verifying and key import. It should work if you use the
 Signature class. The segfault sounds bad though, can you reproduce
 it consistently? You might want to post this on android-security as well,
 a lot of the Google people responsible for this seem to monitor it.

Well, there's essentially two problems here...

1. KeyChain.getPrivateKey(this, alias) returns an object that segfaults
when collected by the GC. The segfault occurs in RSA_free in libcrypto.
 This is 100% reproducible for me on Nexus 7. This behavior has been
documented in other posts, e.g.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=36545

2. You say that the new OpenSSL engine supports only signing, verifying and
key import. That's fine, but keep in mind that the RSA signature used for
verification of an SSL session is typically generated by the cipher object
javax.crypto.Cipher.getInstance(RSA/ECB/PKCS1PADDING) acting as an

[android-developers] How to get pictures save selected pictures as a preference?

2012-10-04 Thread James Anderson
I was make an XML file full of my app's settings, and I became stuck on how
to get the user to select pictures (or take one from the camera). I figured
it would be DialogPreference, but I am not sure how to set it up to give
the user an option to select photos from. Basically I want to know how to
make a thing in a live wallpaper's preference screen that prompts the user
to select photos from the gallery or by capture a photo and save
selected/captured photo list into the app's preferences.

[android-developers] Re: NDK Development with Objective-C 2.0

2012-09-14 Thread James
Philippe,

Thank you for creating this post. If I wanted to write an app
for android in entirely objective-c, could I?

On Thursday, January 21, 2010 9:12:53 PM UTC-5, Philippe Hausler wrote:

 I had started a thread over at the android-porting group, and figured it
 might be a better venue to post a request here.

 Recently I have embarked on a project that aims to imbue the Android NDK
 gcc 4.2.1 with support for Objective-C 2.0. This project is of course to
 bolster the Android platform with more options for developers, and not to
 usurp the current application environment (more choices can make better
 products). As of the current status of the project, I have been able to
 successfully modify gcc to compile not only objc code but also objc 2.0
 code. There are a few features that are still not finished with the
 compiler end as well as there are no frameworks that I have finished for
 building applications for Android. However that being said there is a
 potential for being able to make a directly code compatible set of
 frameworks targeted for the Android OS that would allow applications
 written for iPhone to be compiled for Android with zero code modifications
 to the application, in turn allowing the exact same functionality of the
 iPhone counterpart to work on Android.

 This all being the case, I need some feedback from the community. I am not
 looking for any sort of comparison of which platform is better, nor am I
 looking for a comparison of which language is better.

 If you are an iPhone developer and an Android developer:
 For any of your iPhone projects, which frameworks would you pose as top
 priority to create (other than Foundation and UIKit)
 How highly would you rank the need for a gui building interface (perhaps
 maybe something in Interface Builder that works then with both NDK based
 apps and Java apps)?

 General Android Developers:
 Other than arm-eabi targets, what other targets would be on the top of
 must make ports of this compiler?
 Would a objc interface to the Java ui be useful to your projects?
 What would be the upper limit of the size of a static library that you
 would include within your apps?
 Would a dynamic library stored in another application bundle (e.g.
 /data/data/com.example/libs/libSomethingGoesHere.so) to save on user space
 be preferable?

 People with compiler testing/building experience:
 I need help testing the current versions of my fork of the compiler... I
 narry could fathom that I could anticipate any and all potential code that
 could create an issue with the compiler, I need testing to track down the
 bugs (which I know there are already a few).

 The fork of the NDK gcc is being hosted at
 http://code.google.com/p/android-gcc-objc2-0/ I have gotten it to work
 reasonably so, there are a few things that still are a bit on the squirrly
 side, and some stuff that is still just flat out broken. Of the things that
 do work: Objective-C code compiles, properties work, synth'd variables
 work, private ivars work, blocks work but still need the runtime library
 (which i just need to commit the changes to add that).

 Sincerely,
 Philippe Hausler

[android-developers] using camera in support fragments, but it isn't being released

2012-09-12 Thread James Black
I have a fragment that initially opens a camera.
Then, when the user goes to look at the preview, that is in a new fragment,
so I pass the camera from MainFragment to PreviewFragment.
PreviewFragment then makes a callback, passing back the camera, to the main
activity when the user selects to take a picture.
That activity then gets MainFragment, sets the camera in MainFragment, and
a boolean to tell it to take the picture, and replaces the PreviewFragment
with MainFragment
In onResume, in MainFragment, it sees the boolean set and takes the picture.

I am trying to get this to work properly, but it seems to be very
convoluted, and, if you go into PreviewFragment, then hit home, the camera
hasn't been released, since I can't free the camera in the onPause method,
as I need it, it appears, in order for the picture to be taken.

So, what is the best way to use fragments to preview and take pictures.

I don't want to have the same fragment do both, as the MainFragment will
allow face recognition and marking the faces found, and putting the
SurfaceView over the other elements on MainFragment was problematic.

If looking at the code that goes through these will help please let me
know, but it may just make it more confusing.

Thank you.

[android-developers] How to add a custom surfaceview to a fragment

When a user clicks on a button I want to show a custom surfaceview in my
fragment, as they preview the camera, but in `onCreateView` I don't see how
to add content to the view.

I want to be able to add/remove the surfaceview, or to somehow hide it when
it is not being previewed, without loading a new fragment.

You may want to look at the different types of apps, for example remote

These devices have less power and ram, so don't make it too complicated

   This is driving me nuts. I setup search in my application and it works
great if you hit the search button on the device or if I call
onSearchRequested() from the onStart method of my activity. But I have a
listview that has a onItemClickListener that implements the onItemClick
listener. If I call onSearchRequested() from there, I get a

for the handler to execute the onSearchRequested(), but I get the same
error. the code is up over at stack overflow too:

Re: [android-developers] Confirmation when mail has been sent

2012-05-30 Thread James Black
What I settled on it to store the file information in a list, and in on
destroy I delete them.

 Same issue , just the difference is intent type,

 (pdf or zip). But my problem is with the attachment.The Intent.EXTRA_STREAM
 read from sdcard but after sending the mail i want to delete it from
 sdcard. So i used startActivityForResult and onActivityResult i delete that
 file from sdcard. Everything works well except the received mail has no
 attachment(not even the file name with 0 size). Think the sending process
 done by some other thread rather than a UI thread. and the deletion task is
 done from the UI thread even before the sending process is complete.

 Sorry, but that is not part of the ACTION_SEND system, as far as I know.

Re: [android-developers] Re: New TAX arrangements?

2012-05-30 Thread James Black
This sounds like a problem in need of a software solution.

It should be easy enough to have something that will pull down your info
and tell you how .much goes where.

 My understanding is that Google is not your dealer. It is your agent and
 payment processor. It's a market not a store. You were and will be
 responsible for paying taxes, before this change to Google Play and after
 this change to Google Play. Nothing changed here.

 E.g. I'm from Massachusetts and I have to collect taxes from customers
 from MA. I then have to pay that taxes to the government. It is my
 responsibility. I can get a sales report from Google and figure out what
 sales taxes i have to submit to the state and what income taxes to submit
 to the federal and state government. Google does not pay the taxes for me.

 You are selling stuff. It is a business and it comes with business
 processes such as paying income and sales taxes.

 Yes. But until recently, when goods were sold from one country to
 another, there was no VAT.
 Is that no longer true?

 If not, shall every Android developer keep track of which country
 requires VAT to be included - and which country does not - when goods
 are being sold from another/particular country?

  But If you are not selling more than a certain dollar (or other
 currency)
  amount to users in a given country, don't expect a taxman to bang on
 your
  door trying to collect from you.Only after a certain threshold you are
  required to pay taxes.

 WHO is goind to keep track of such tresholds? Each developer?

 I thought that it was the DEALER (i.e. Google) who should be
 responsible for collecting/paying taxes, and not each contributor/
 developer?

 This may be the end of the Google Play Store.

Re: [android-developers] Questions on Digital Signing and Verification

2012-05-30 Thread James Black
I haven't dealt with this yet, but my expectation is to generate a
certificate on the server and then that should be used on iOS and Android.

I have no experience with it, but look at chilkatsoft.com, bit it will cost.

Also, you can look at the source for how the key is packaged and port it to
iOS.
On May 30, 2012 9:00 PM, Qin Ding qindi...@gmail.com wrote:

 I have an application that requires digital signing plain text messages on
 the client (Android and IOS) and the signature verification is performed on
 J2EE server.
 For example, on Android, when the application is registered with my app,
 it generates a keypair on device. The private key is stored on device and
 publicKey is sent to server for future use. The private key is protected by
 a secret key only known to the user. When the server sends the message for
 the client to sign, the private key is retrieved and the message is signed
 using the private key. The result signature is sent to the server, which
 retrieves the user's publicKey and use it to verify the signature. It
 works very well.

 Now we have IOS customers. When the publicKey and signature are generated
 on IOS device, I tried to send the IOS publicKey and signature as byte[] in
 a hope that I can reconstruct the publicKey from byte[] at the J2EE server.
  It failed to rebuild the publicKey using X509PublicKeySpec. How should I
 handle this using the publicKey and signature from non-java source.

 I wonder if someone has the experience in verify digital signature using
 the publicKey and signature from IOS or RIM. Thank you in advance for any
 pointers and ideas.
