If Google eventually sees fit to remove them, then fine. If it takes them

Re: [android-developers] free trial for a one time purchase with in app v3

You could use unmanaged items and a server to handle subscriptions. We use
that method. We have a five day free trial that works outside of in-app
billing. It's clean, efficient and also can be customized to offer longer,
shorter or additional free trial days for individual users. The downside is
you have to manage the subscriptions on a server. That also, as I see it,
is an upside.

[android-developers] Re: Hearing Aid

2013-02-28 Thread John Coryat
Just from a technical standpoint, a smartphone held in your hand, is never
going to be a satisfactory hearing aid. The original hearing aids were
pretty much exactly what you're describing. A box, usually held in one's
shirt pocket, that transmitted sound through a wire to a small speaker in
the user's ear. Those things were terrible for many reasons.

The simplest form of hearing aid, an amp that boosts across all frequencies
evenly, at least takes the sound as it would be heard at the ear. A
regular, prescribed hearing instrument uses the loss curve from the patient
to customize the responses of and boost each frequency band differently.

In order to make a reasonable hearing aid out of a smart phone, it would
require stereo mikes at each ear, transmitting the sound levels to the
Android device, which would boost each band according to the loss of the
user and transmit it back to be broadcast to the user.

For this complexity, you might as well take a look at the modern, digital
hearing instrument. They are a marvel of technology and would be far
superior to anything that can be cobbled together out of a smart phone,
regardless of which one.

You should have looked at the wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_hearing_aids

-John Coryat, USNaviguide LLC

p.s. I've been working in and for the hearing instrument community for over
25 years.

We have a pretty good system of fraud prevention. It's either working 100%

Our zero piracy rate may also be due to the nature of the app: Freemium in

You could do that but you'd be in violation of the Google Play developer's

However, if you want to collect fees after the free trial expires, you must
collect all fees for the full version of the Product through the Payment

the flawed Android Play Store with its 30% cut to Google. Instead they are

emailed copy of the APK file along with a unique keyfile or something like
that. Then on startup of the App it checks for invalid keyfiles online

Maybe also add in a username and password to login to the game. You would

It see the unpublish option that I think that would remove the entire
 app from the store.

Correct. You don't want to do that.

I've used the unpublish option when I've been in a similar situation. It
doesn't seem to be harmful and seems also to happen very fast. Getting it
back on the market takes several hours but at least people aren't
downloading a problem version.

Why wouldn't this be a good option?

doesn't google have a high-water mark where if you reach that, there's

No.

I can't see how this will be good for anyone but Google as well but it's
not without precedent. AdMob holds your money for 45 days. AdSense for 21

Re: [android-developers] All my apps are losing 5 star rates at a really high speed. I've lost more than 200 during this weekend.

2013-01-29 Thread John Coryat
Ok, I see some ratings disappear too. The difference is they are all 1 star
ratings that are vanishing. Good riddance to them!

Before Google implemented the G+ identity thing with ratings and reviews,
there were services (and probably still are) that you could pay to have
high ratings added to the payee's app and 1 star ratings posted to their
competition. I've personally seen this happen (the 1 star type) on my major
app. Now, Google is going back to fix this problem and as a result, bogus
ratings and reviews are being removed from the system.

I can't imagine how 5 star ratings would be removed. Perhaps you can offer
an explanation?

It might be that Google is consolidating ratings that were done by one
person a number of times. It might also be that the ones determined to
be fraudulent are being removed. It might also be possible that whatever
algorithm is doing the work has a bug and is flagging actual, real reviews

I've seen two ratings disappear out of over 25,000. You can't let things

[android-developers] Re: How do other developers handle IAP refunds on unmanaged purchases?

2012-12-03 Thread John Coryat
We simply have No refunds under any circumstances in our refund policy.
That covers most of the situations. We use IAP unmanaged items to do
subscriptions, managed by our server and not Google. If a user purchases
twice, they get twice the subscription period. It's pretty easy to
determine if a user accidentally made a mistake and in that case, I refund
the duplicates.

Sometimes a user is just unhappy and whines about the product in which case
I usually give them a refund unless it's near the subscription period end,
in which case I quote the refund policy.

One recent case a user asked for a refund Because I am going to an
iPhone. Needless to say, I quoted him the no refunds under any
circumstances policy.

In the last year, I may have given 25 refunds so it's not a big deal.

you most definitely don't want in reviews.

I've found this not to be the case. Google's posting guidelines state:

user's comment in a clear, valuable and truthful manner. Whenever you can
address the user's comment within the text of your reply, you should do so.
   2. *Be nice.* These are your users and you want to find resolution, not
burn bridges. Do not post content that is abusive, hateful, or threatens or

The use of this feature is a privilege, not a right. Failure to observe the
above guidelines and any other Google Play terms may result in a suspension
of your application or publisher account as outlined in the Google Play
terms. Please also note that this feature is currently available to a
limited number of developers and we hope to roll it out for broader
availability gradually.

Google prefers developers not engage the crazies. I think that's a good
policy.

I've also found that a good percentage of users who post poor reviews will
revise them if they were confused, didn't understand a feature or were
satisfied by the developer reply. It's very satisfying to see this and
something that can only happen if we can reply to these poor lost souls.

[android-developers] Re: When can every developer reply to reviews?

2012-12-03 Thread John Coryat

I agree 100% and being able to do so, despite your best efforts, you are
likely to get into it with people who are just out to cause someone else
 a problem.
Instead, I think he should develop strategies that help his users help him.

If someone starts to get into it I just reply with something like Please
contact us directly to resolve your issue. and leave it at that. They can
rant all they want after that.

Inevitably, as you suggest, there will be an issue. In my experience, it's
fairly rare and eventually they just stop being a PITA and go away. It's
impossible to fix crazy. Best to ignore them.

[android-developers] Re: How do other developers handle IAP refunds on unmanaged purchases?

2012-12-03 Thread John Coryat
Refunds are made through the Checkout console. It takes a few seconds. The
trick is locating the order to refund. Usually, it's linked to the user's
GMail account so if they contact you that way, then it's a snap. Otherwise,
you have to inform the user how to find their order number through Google
Wallet, which is less than seamless. Most users have no problem with that
either.

Occasionally, a user not using a GMail (It's almost always aol.com or
hotmail) can't find their order number and I just tell them I can't help
them. If it gets down to this, then the user always gives up. The onus is
on the user. There is a no-refund policy in effect and if they can't help
find the order then it's impossible to give them a refund anyway.

I suggest the no refunds under any circumstance policy to CYA.

Re: [android-developers] Re: AppSurfer

2012-11-25 Thread John Coryat
The reason I get huffy about these types of implementations is that we
have millions of users. If 0.05% of them download this monstrosity and have
a problem, we could get 100's of emails complaining about defects or
crashes. These emulators hide that fact so it is nearly impossible to tell
if they are from actual devices or these emulators. The result is a huge
waste of our time debugging what isn't a problem and user frustration. I
might add that we research and answer EVERY email request we receive within
24 hours. Something most developers don't do.

Luckily, this emulator seems to be an opt-in thing instead of one that
simply installs Google Play, so we won't have to be concerned with this
particular implementation.

[android-developers] GCM Stats in the developer console

2012-10-26 Thread John Coryat
I just noticed a new box in the developer's console titled:

Enable Google Cloud Messaging Stats

This new feature has three boxes for GCM API keys.

I went to https://code.google.com/apis/console/ API Access pane and
used the Key for server apps (with IP locking) but it was rejected. When
I tried Key for browser apps (with referers) it was accepted.

I use the key for server apps and not the key for browser apps on my server
so perhaps these stats won't be gathered? I don't see any way of accessing
those statistics yet.

[android-developers] Re: Google cancelled this order. Reason: Other

2012-09-28 Thread John Coryat
We see about 15% of all orders canceled for one reason or another. The odd
thing is if the user tries again in 24 hours, the order usually goes
through. The problem comes when the user just gives up in frustration. I've
seen four or five canceled orders from the same user in a row. I can just
imagine what expletives are being uttered during this period.

On the positive side, a year ago we were seeing 25% cancelations so things
have improved quite a bit.

Simple answer: Now.

Regardless of when support will end for C2DM, GCM is the future so there is

It's a fairly simple modification to move to GCM and there are significant

2012-09-23 Thread John Coryat

I don't deny that. But who cares about CPM? If you have the same amount of
C's and less M, the R has not increased, in all likelihood.

Well, I for one care about eCPM. Ours is currently $2.43. If you have a
better eCPM then perhaps you are right and I am wrong. On the other hand,
there is no right or wrong, just different approaches.

[android-developers] Re: Advertising opt out

2012-09-19 Thread John Coryat
Increasing CTR increases CPM. If you want to deny that, you're also denying
yourself potential revenue. There's no simple math here as Rudolf explained.

But forget the revenue. What is the point of an app anyway? It's providing
a useful bit of software that improves the usability of the device to the
user. Another words, a great user experience. My point is that by letting
users opt out of ads for free, they get a better user experience and the
device itself becomes more useful.

If the point of your app isn't to do this, then for sure, free opt out
isn't for you.

One additional detail... Free users who opt out of ads will see them come
back after 30 days. They can opt out again but they will be back after a
month. We do this because a new user might automatically opt out of ads
when they first install the app but later, after they get used to using the
app, might hardly notice the ads coming back and even find them useful.

[android-developers] Advertising opt out

2012-09-17 Thread John Coryat
Many developers force users to purchase something in order to remove
advertisements from their apps. While this may seem to be a good revenue
model, it tends to annoy and anger users. It has some other serious
consequences as well.

One of the important metrics in calculating the CPC (Cost per Click) is the
CTR (Click Through Rate). A low CTR will also result in a lower CPC. By
forcing users to view ads that they will never click on developers actually
are lowering their earning potential.

One way to raise CPC, CTR and customer satisfaction is to allow users to
opt out of advertising without charging them. It's not only good for
customer relations but also the bottom line. How many users actually pay to
remove ads? It has to be a very low rate compared to the number who are
frustrated and annoyed at seeing ads. The good will alone makes this
worthwhile. The real benefit is increased CPC and CTR.

We've recently implemented AdMob advertising in our main app and have had
virtually no complaints at all. A couple of users have missed the several
places where we state that Anyone, anytime can opt out of ads and
contacted us. When they understand the way we've set it up, universally,
the former angry user is now an ecstatic one.

In addition, we're seeing excellent CTR and eCPM (effective Cost per
thousand). I can't say with impunity that our opt out policy is causing the
high eCPM but it probably is helping.

Consider free opt out for your advertising supported apps. It's good for
everyone.

Re: [android-developers] Re: Advertising opt out

2012-09-17 Thread John Coryat
We've found from our statistics that 97.5% of users don't opt out even when
it is free to do so. Those that hate ads are vocal about their dislike so
they are the ones who give one star negative reviews. If nothing else,
getting them to remain quiet has a lot of value, more so than the paltry
amounts that will be collected by forcing them to pay to get rid of ads.

Personally, I think it's better to have a compelling feature that users
feel good about buying than essentially holding them hostage with ads they
hate to the point they'll pay to get rid of them. Those users aren't going
to be happy about the choice. Better to gain the good will of users and
muzzle the loud and angry minority. That's my opinion anyway.

As for the higher CTR yields higher CPC, I got that from a very good source
at Google IO a few years ago. I put it into practice and saw my CPC climb
over 30% by reducing the number of ads shown which resulted in an increase
in CTR. I have no proof that mobile works the same way but I can make the
leap that it does.

[android-developers] Re: WHY can an app still not be changed from free to paid???

2012-08-18 Thread John Coryat
You can change a free app into a paid app using the in-app billing system.
Offer a 5 or 10 day free trial, then present a payment dialog after the
trial period runs out. It's the Freemium model and works well.

It takes a bit of code to accomplish this but overall, it's a better model.
You can offer subscriptions as well. With the Premium (paid app) model,
you are forced into the buy-once-support-forever role. The only way to
increase revenue is to accelerate installs. That's something that may be
difficult or impossible. WIth the Freemium subscription method, you can
increase revenue by keeping your install rate the same by having renewals
of your app.

Something to think about.

I'm sure it's not a technical issue as Googlers are probably smart enough
to figure that out. You (Google) are effectively denying developers an
important marketing tool. It should be up to us to set whatever price we
want and change it at will. I think most developers would agree with me.

[android-developers] Re: i lost my mobile. IS ANY WAT TO FIND THE LOCATION OF SAMSUNG GALAXY Y MOBILE WITH THE IMEI NUMBER.MY MOBILE IMEI NUMBER IS 352384051456475

2012-08-13 Thread John Coryat
I've never done this but in theory, it should work.

Go to the Play store using a desktop and Chrome browser.
Sign in with the same Google account as your phone uses.
Find a phone location app and select it to download to your missing device.
Do whatever the app requires to start tracking your phone

Wait. The finder app should notify you of your location.

Since this is using Push, it doesn't require anything but an active phone
and an internet connection. Since you killed your SIM, then most likely
this will only work if the user is near an open WiFi and you've left your
WiFi on.

Pretty slim chance. If you hadn't blocked your SIM, this would easily work.

Re: [android-developers] Lost Password of Keystore

2012-08-05 Thread John Coryat

Send yourself an e-mail with the keystore attached and include your
 password,

Thats crazy. Your mail message may pass through several untrusted routers
so a lot of people may have access to both, the keystore and the unlock
 password.

Sounds like you suffer from paranoia. If you're worried about the NSA
intercepting your keystore, then yes. Don't put it in the cloud. On the
other hand, the NSA and their black helicopters could just hover over your
house and beam it up, Scotty style.

Using GMail with https is pretty secure.

Re: [android-developers] Lost Password of Keystore

2012-08-04 Thread John Coryat
Let this be a lesson to EVERYONE:

Send yourself an e-mail with the keystore attached and include your
password, or at least use a password YOU CAN REMEMBER!!! That way it's
stored in the cloud.

Pretty simple. There's no need to make this difficult. The cost of losing
your keystore or password is incredibly high.

[android-developers] Re: Someone stole my sound effects

2012-07-19 Thread John Coryat

Reportedly Google is working on a scheme to provide end-to-end
encryption for paid apps in Google Play. It might take a while to
 become reality though.

Wasn't that reported as it would be a good idea if rather than something
Google is actively working on? What's your source for this?

Re: [android-developers] READ_LOGS permission is not granted to 3rd party applications in Jelly Bean (api 16)

2012-07-12 Thread John Coryat

Let me just respectfully say that I don't understand the decision.
The API is potentially very dangerous, yes, but that is why it requires
 a permission.

Do users even look or comprehend what permissions are being used in any
given app? The user wants the app, they agree, agree, agree and then get
malware.

[android-developers] Re: HELP! Google removed my app with millions of users!

2012-07-05 Thread John Coryat
There are thousands of apps that use a bottom banner for ads. It seems a
natural place for them.

It would be nice to have some guidance on this.

 the top would resolve that.

That falls into the I'll put it wherever they want as long as they tell
me where they want it category you mentioned already.

Before you mentioned the app name I was thinking it might have fallen into
the intellectual property category if someone sent a DMCA-type notice,
but that shouldn't be the issue here.

Without warning, a few days ago my long standing successful app was

and has around 1.5 million active users, and nearly 5 million downloads.
It's been in the top 5 of its category for well over a year. It has over
65,000 ratings with an average of 4.6/5.

The email I received said that the app was removed because Google says
 *Violation
of one or more of the following provisions of the Content Policy:

 * and more specifically because *core features of your application
causes users to accidentally click on advertisements*

First of all, the ads are hardly accidentally clicked... The highest
average click rate I've ever gotten was 0.8%. Even still I've read over the
 Content
 Policy http://www.android.com/us/developer-content-policy.html as well
 as the Distribution
 Agreementhttp://www.android.com/us/developer-distribution-agreement.html
 and
neither call out specific ad placement rules, guidelines, or suggestions.
The ad placements are also similar to hundreds of other most popular apps...

I'm more than happy to upload a compliant version of the application
putting the advertisements in whatever position is deemed acceptable by
 Google. I'm not unethical or a con-artist, I'm a recent college grad from a
smaller town after all... Re-releasing the application under another
package name would be unfair to the 1.5 million active users out there as
they wouldn't get the update notification or keep their settings.

Re: [android-developers] Re: How to: Free to Paid App and retain preference and db files?

2012-07-01 Thread John Coryat
The idea of irritate the user until he agrees to pay just seems wrong
to me.

In my opinion, it is far better to let users opt out of ads for free than
use advertising as some sort of black mail to push users into paying. In
our app, only 2.7% of users choose to opt out of banners. The rest let them
display. We have premium users who choose not to opt out as well.

A small percentage of users hate ads. Giving them the opportunity to just
remove them easily and freely increases the acceptance of your app and also
helps give it a positive image.

One thing to keep in mind. By not allowing free opt out, all you are doing
is decreasing the CTR for your ads and that lowers revenue. Part of secret
sauce for determining what you are paid is the CTR, so keeping that high
will increase your revenue. Those that would opt out will never click on an
ad.

I believe as long as the new owner can sign the app with your key then it
doesn't matter who the publisher is or what you rename the app. The package
name has to stay the same though.
