[android-developers] Notification behaviors in watch chaged after Wear 1.4
In Wear 1.3.x(before November?), All notifications(which have no LOCAL_ONLY|ON_GOING...flags) in smartphone is sended to smartwatch immediately. We are using the Search function inside our app, to initiate a search on our server. As of 4.4.3, the search still works fine when inputting the search term in the Search Dialog using the Android keyboard, but when using Voice search, it is apparently ignoring the Global Search parameter, because other apps are opening in the background and pop up when the user backs out of our app. I just checked in on a device using 4.4.2 and it works properly. [android-developers] Re: Density confusion
Thanks String. Although I agree that 169 should not be considered HDPI, if you create an AVD with the same PPI and size, even though it is a generic device, it comes back with the 1.5 factor. So, it is hard to blame Samsung on this one. Next time I create a big app, I will try to use default font sizes and lay it out so that there are as few direct assignments of sizes of objects as possible, as Mark was implying with using wrap_content. Unfortunately, it got too tempting to make the app look as good as possible! Kim On Nov 17, 12:05 pm, String sterling.ud...@googlemail.com wrote: I'm assuming this is the original Tab? If so, there was some consternation when it was released because Samsung configured it as HDPI even though its true pixel density (169 DPI) is well within the MDPI range. It's basically an outlier in the 7 tablet space, and makes life difficult for virtually any tablet apps. One thing that I have found helpful was to do my Large layouts in inches, rather than dp/dip. So, instead of 16dp (for example), you'd specify it as 0.1in. I don't recommend doing this across all your layouts, but for the large category, it seems to work pretty well. And FWIW, I found better cross device support for in (inches) than mm (millimeters). String -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: Density confusion
Thanks Mark. Further investigation is showing me that the Fire returns a densiy (and scaledDensity) of 1.0 vs 1.5 for the Tab.Changing the ppi on the simulator down to 164 from 169 gives the result that I am seeing on the Fire, so it looks like Amazon is not doing anything wrong (other than telling developers to be ready for the Fire by setting up an AVD with 169 PPI, instead of 164). I am using dp's or dip's everywhere and unless I am totally confused, this is one case where using dp's is worse than using px's, because the Tab is multiplying my dp's by 1.5 and the Fire is not, but they are the same size screen with less than 3% variance in pixel density. Hence, the views on my Fire are 2/3 the size of the same views on the Tab. My best guess is that the Fire is reporting a lower density because of the extra rows of system info. In any case, I still don't see how to work around this. If it was a 7 device with a pixel count of 600x400, all would be well with the 1.0 density factor :-). Any suggestions? If so, is there a way to load the layout-large xml even though the Fire is on the Medium side? Not by the same name. [android-developers] Re: Density confusion
Thanks again Mark. I agree, but the AVD, set up at the Tab's 169 density, also comes back as high density, so the Tab seems to be consistent with Google's guidelines (if the AVD is, that is). [android-developers] NullPointerException when checking for orientation
I am using the recommended method to check orientation when using frames in 3.0 or higher: if(((ViewByRoom.controls CAN_DISPLAY_QUEUE) == CAN_DISPLAY_QUEUE) getActivity() .findViewById(R.id.queueframe)==null) { but sometimes I get a nullpointer exception on the line with .findViewById(R.id.queueframe) = null in it. I put it in a separate line from the getActivity() to make sure the exception was referring to that line. This code is in one fragment and is checking to see if the other fragment exists (is in portrait mode). Shouldn't that line just return false (causing the if statement to fail)? it does work most of the time, only occasionally giving the exception when I change orientation. [android-developers] Re: Careful, Dell Streak 7 ignores manifest setting for Orientation
Thanks Diane. I see my thinking was wrong. I thought that in the manifest, the designer can tell the OS that all of the activities are protrait and should never get notified of a change in orientation outside of your activity (except if implementing onConfigurationChanged). I was hoping to tackle all of the complexities of orientation changes at a later date, since the app itself is pretty complex already :-). Just curious, I notice that if the user is in my app and the user hits the home button, Android stays in the orientation the app was in. Then, when the user turns the device, the orientation changes, but my sleeping app does not go through the onDestroy()/onCreate() change configuration callbacks. Why would it not be similar, when the device is going to sleep? I.e., put the app to sleep, change configuration if it wants to (but don't do the callbacks, since the app specifically said it does not support landscape), and when it returns from sleep, discover that the app is portrait only so change to portrait and restart app? So, just to be sure I understand, there is really no safe way to create an app that does not handle both orientations? [android-developers] Careful, Dell Streak 7 ignores manifest setting for Orientation
I have found tht when the Streak 7 goes to sleep, the last thing it does is issue an onDestroy() followed by an onCreate() to my app and then pauses the cpu shortly later. A look at logcat shows me that this is caused by Dell deciding to change the orientation before going to sleep, apparently so that it wakes up in the landscape mode by default. I have orientation fixed to portrait in my activities, but the Streak is ignoring this. Thought others might want to be aware of this. If anyone has a way to over ride this, let me know. [android-developers] Re: List issues with Android devices here
All HTC, as far as I can tell - do not implement UDP multi-cast properly. Join command does not get issued. Dell Steak 7 - When the device goes to sleep, orientation is forced to landscape even when your activity is set to only portrait mode. This causes your app to get the onDestroy() and onCreate() that result from the change configuration. Overriding the onConfigurationChanged() method does not work in this case. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Re: WiFi Error/Unable to connect in AVD
Thanks, Kostya. Your code got me looking in the right direction. I went back to an earlier release that had been working and found two things, both of which I had to change to get it to work: 1) In my startup code I changed while(!wifi.isWifiEnabled()) wifi.setWifiEnabled(true); to what I had in an earlier version, which was while(!wifi.setWifiEnabled(true)); Both of these are meant to turn on wifi if it is not on. The first does not work in the emulator, but does work on real devices. The second does not work on the Samsung Epic, but does work on a Galaxy Tab and the HTC devices I test with. 2) I had added a connectivity check (using ConnectivityManager) in the newer version of the software that I had to remove for the emulator. Once I made those changes it works fine in the emulator. I like your idea of just having a boolean value that I can change when I am using the emulator. Of course, I just have to remember to test the release version to be sure I change the value before putting the app in the Market :-) Thanks!! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] WiFi Error/Unable to connect in AVD
About a month ago I stopped being able to test my app on the AVDs because it would not connect to WiFi. My app uses WiFi heavily. When I open a 2.1 AVD and go into Settings|Wireless and Networks and click on Wi-Fi it says Unable to connect to wifi. In a 2.2 AVD it just says Error. Additional info: I went to another computer that I was using last fall for development and it has the same problem. I never updated it, so I don't think it is related to HoneyComb, Samsung Tab add-in or any other newer update. They are both on the same LAN. I know I must be doing something dumb. Any ideas? I have been doing all of my debugging on actual devices lately, so I didn't think much of it, but now I would like to do some screenshots. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Your code works. Thanks for your help. On 1월7일, 오전6시10분, A. Elk lancaster.dambust...@gmail.com wrote: Uh, I think the beginning example in theMonkeyRunnerdocumentation is wrong. The initial snippet is very misleading. Someone should report that as a bug. Your code listing doesn't show that you installed the package that contains the component you want to start. I assume that you either installed it before you ranMonkeyRunner, or that you left this out of your listing. The syntax of the component parameter is the same as that for an Android ComponentName: package_name/class_name. Package_name is the Android package name of the .apk containing your application. In your example, assuming that you're using the Note Pad sample app as your application, it's com.example.android.notepad. Class_name is the name of a class that Android can start; it's almost always an extension of android.app.Activity. For the Note Pad sample app, you would probably use com.example.android.notepad.NotesList. Hi, For my tests I have to buy a real android phone. Emulator is cool but I need a real one to really test my application. Re: [android-developers] Re: Best way to logout each time the application/task goes to background
@Frank weis: my application requires a high level of security, so if the user leaves it I don't want that someone else who would use the android mobile can open it without having to log in. Thanks for all your replies it helps a lot ! I think i will go for the timeout method. It's a good point that if the user clicks on home by mistake and wants to come back to the application in a short time period he doesn't need to log in again. So it's a bit of a maintanence issue. I set my timeout to, I think, 10 seconds. Long enough, so if the user accidentally presses the home button, they can get back in quickly. [android-developers] Re: Spreadsheet of current phones vs screensize/skin and density
HVGA (320x480) was the only resolution supported with Android 1.5. The following URL shows the range of screens supported with Android 1.6 and newer versions of the SDK: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html#range A quick search found the following list (dated October 19, 2009): http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/19/android-galore-a-complete-list-of-the-android-phones-and-their-specs-droid-best/ On Jan 10, 8:24 pm, OldSkoolMark m...@sublimeslime.com wrote: Been googling for a comprehensive spreadsheet that shows all the current Android devices, which version of the SDK they use, and most importantly, screensize/skin and pixel density. So far, I haven't found anything definitive. I would think that somebody at Google is maintaining a spreadsheet that captures this info. Can somebody point me to the online resource I'm missing, or if you've been maintaining such a spreadsheet, would you consider making it more publicly available. [android-developers] Re: findviewbyid in service?
Hi Marco Nelissen I know you say. Well… But I would like to change key_image(icon) on runtime software keyboard which is developed by me. Android softkeyboard change xml file for changing only one key_icon(ex. search-ennter). I don’t like this way. So I want to modify only a key_icon in resource xml file. Is possible? *From:* android-developers@googlegroups.com [mailto: android-develop...@googlegroups.com] *On Behalf Of *Marco Nelissen *Sent:* Wednesday, June 24, 2009 11:33 PM *To:* android-developers@googlegroups.com *Subject:* [android-developers] Re: findviewbyid in service? [android-developers] How to loading images (assets or resources) dynamically?
Hi, How do I load the image dynamically through the code? If its unclear, I mean, I want to load image files by name based on the condition in the code. If I use images as resources, the image names have to be hard coded. This is unacceptable to me. If I load image in a webview (with image src path dynamically), the time it takes to load is unacceptable to me. Can anyone suggest any other way to load the images dynamically? [android-developers] Re: How to display border lines for TableLayout
Hi there, How about making a custom ViewGroup that extends TableLayout then override the paint method. In the overrided method 1. you may get all of views in the layout to get view's bounds area 2. draw rectangle to express the border of view I didn't try this, but it makes sense. On 3월13일, 오후6시18분, neuzou neu...@gmail.com wrote: Hi: everybody, Android developer guide mention TableLayout containers do not display border lines for their rows, columns, or cells. [android-developers] How can I send CJK text via SMS on G1
Hello developpers. I am suffering sending CJK(Chinese, Japanese, Korean) text using SMS. I copypaseted following code in my code. SmsManager sms=SmsManager.getDefault(); sms.sendTextMessage(x, null, 한글test, null, null); It works when I send english text only. But when I send CJK text, it returned empty text. Above code gave me, test only. I have tested two G1 phone, mine and my wife's. I saw aPowerSms can send Chinese text SMS, how can I do the same thing for Korean. Any response would be appreciated. [android-developers] Re: Bug in Bitmap.compress when used on JPEGs?
Maybe some of the requests are getting blocked. Try adding connect and read timeouts by rewriting the url.openStream() to openConnection().getInputStream(): ... URL url = uri.toURL(); URLConnection con = url.openConnection(); con.setConnectTimeout(3000); con.setReadTimeout(3000); Bitmap bmp = BitmapFactory.decodeStream(con.getInputStream()); ... Adjust the 3000 ms timeout values if necessary. You can add exception handling for the connection timeouts.
