[android-developers] Android Studio 2.2.1 Jumbled text in code editor

2017-01-18 Thread Paul Handley
The jumbled code is just in the code editor under the tab for the
MainActivity.java file The text looks like this:pro t ec ed Vo i d. If I
copy and paste here it turns out normal. I think it may be an encoding
issue but the language is English(My Language). I uninstalled and
downloaded the IDE and re-installed it and still have the problem. The
default app builds fine and I get an apk file which I have side-loaded to
my phone, installed it, and I get "Hello World" so it seems the jumbled
text has no effect on the final result. If I cut and paste from notepad the
pasted text is also jumbled.

I checked the encoding under Other Settings -> Default Settings and it is
UTF-8 Which seems to be standard. I changed it to US-ASCII and again to
Windows-1252 but there was no difference.
Thanks,
Paul

[android-developers] Privacy Policy

2016-12-20 Thread paul burton
I got a message from googleplay-developer that I should submit a privacy
policy to my apps on Google Play Store and in the mobile app.

I just submitted a privacy policy (in swedish) but still got a message from
google that the app did not have one.

Do anyone have an example of a privacy policy that you have submitted to
your app and Google Play Store

Best regards

Paul with team @Foretagsapp

[android-developers] Looking to turn a simple Excel worksheet into an Android App

2016-12-18 Thread Paul Bevins
Hi,

My name is Paul and I'm new to the forum. I looked, but did not see this,
so posting.

I have a simple, one sheet Excel file that does basic calculations,
counting points for activities done during the week.
I'm looking for a simple way to convert the sheet into an app.
Right now, it seems like everything wants me to use some sort of web based
forum for calculations and then drop to the app.
However, frequently, people will not have web access, so this is not
feasible.
Is there a simple way to get this created?

Alternatively, all the sheet does is count points for people trying to
improve the quality of their life.
Is there an easy way to build an app that does simple addition and color
codes correspondingly?

For instance, Journaling gets 3 points for each day done, a total of 7 days
per item (row).
At 2 days (6 pts) or less, the total is red. 3-5 (9-15 pts), yellow and 6-7
(18-21), green.

There are four sections. Mental, Physical, Recreational and Spiritual.
Each of the four (15 row) sections also need to be totaled, though I'm not
sure I want those colored.

Finally, the complete total of all 60 rows needs to be displayed at the
bottom, or for an app, maybe on top?

This is a volunteer project and I'm willing to put a bit of money into it.
However, since the people using the app won't be paying for it (or even
able to),
this really needs to be as inexpensive as possible, at least to start.

[android-developers] Bring app to forefront and "lock"?

2016-08-08 Thread Paul Olenick

Hello,

Are there any limitations (either technical or "rules") that would prevent
me from creating an iOS app that essentially:

   1. at a given interval comes to the forefront (becomes the "active" app).
   2. will not let the user do anything else (change apps, etc.) until they
   succesfully perform an action within the app.

If so, and you're able to point me to documentation, I'd be grateful.

Thank you!

[android-developers] Re: How can I get Date/Time info from API level 21, when Date(), Calendar(), and SimpleDateFormat() all require API level 23.)

2016-07-12 Thread Tommy Paul
Ok I actually figured out the answer, after TWO DAYS of experimenting and
getting ideas from Google searches. This is what works to get the date,
and put it in a string I can use:

In the XML file, I added this line to the TextClock definition:

android:format12Hour="dd  "

of course, the format could be adjusted to any date/time info you want.

And in the java file, put the info into astring with these three lines, placed
appropriately:

TextClock txtClock;

txtClock = (TextClock) findViewById(R.id.txtClock);

volText.setText(txtClock.getText());

("volText" is a TextView elsewhere defined.)

I'm rather amazed this information was so hard to find and put together from
bits and pieces.

Such needs/solutions should be clearly explained somewhere.

I test drove your 2nd code snippet and found it worked on all
configurations with the exception that any 8 bit attempt would always fail.

This confirms what I found with various tablets and phones.

If your Samsung tablet is failing on all attempts try changing
MediaRecorder.AudioSource.*DEFAULT*   to  MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC

If you want a separate baseline, test drive my VoIP app, it lets you test
microphone input to speaker output dynamically when configuring the voice
codec.

[android-developers] Re: Receiving a UDP stream over cellular network

2016-04-27 Thread paul zazzarino
Are you using the rev_rmnet# interface to obtain the IP address of the
device ?

If you can elaborate on the above question that would be a good start.

UDP will work, you can use a protocol like STUN to perform "hole punching"
or setup your own publicly addressable UDP server to assist in relaying the
conversation.

see https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5389

STUN will tell you the external IP address of the device and external ports
of the NAT the device is on.
STUN will not work in all network types.

Additionally you may need to set up web services to assist in name and IP
address queries. i.e. each remote device registers a user name and external
IP address and port after using STUN to determine this, also register via
WS if the device is online.
You then use STUN during call setup to assist in hole punching by issuing
binding requests. You also want to issue the binding requests periodically
on the listening socket for keepalive purposes. Read the RFC.

there are a lot of nuances to this, you can contact me at
paulzazzar...@3zwireless.com

[android-developers] Cant create handler inside thread that has not called looper.prepare() exception being thrown

2016-02-06 Thread Akash Paul
Hi have written some code which is supposed to send data via a http request
object in android, However i know the data is being sent or posted but the
UI thread does not like the way i have done things can anyone advise please?

Code:

async class definition:

private class Connection extends AsyncTask{
@Override
protected Object doInBackground(Object[] objects){
try{
PostData(R.id.fullscreen_content, 3);
   }
catch(IOException exception){
exception.printStackTrace();
}
return null;
}
}

button click action:
/** Called when the user clicks the Happy button */
public void happy_click(View view) throws IOException {
try{
new Connection().execute();
report_success();
}
catch(Exception exception){
messageBox("Response was not successful","Failed to process response" +
exception.getMessage());
}
}

PostData method:

protected void PostData(Integer Question_ID,Integer ResponseChosen_ID) throws
IOException {
try{
URL url = new URL("http://cce.swlgroup.com/;);
HttpURLConnection conn = (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection();

HttpClient httpClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
HttpPost post = new HttpPost(conn.getURL().toString());
conn.setRequestMethod("POST");

conn.connect();
Date date = new Date();
SimpleDateFormat dt = new SimpleDateFormat("-MM-dd", Locale.UK);
SimpleDateFormat time = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss",Locale.UK);

String nowDate = dt.format(date);
String nowTime = time.format(date);

String output = nowDate + "," + nowTime + ",";

ArrayList params = new ArrayList<>();
params.add(new BasicNameValuePair("Question
ID",Question_ID.toString()));
params.add(new BasicNameValuePair("Response_Chosen_ID",
ResponseChosen_ID.toString()));
params.add(new BasicNameValuePair("Timestamp", output));

post.setEntity(new UrlEncodedFormEntity(params));
HttpResponse response = httpClient.execute(post);
BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new
InputStreamReader(response.getEntity().getContent()));
StringBuilder builder = new StringBuilder();
String line = "";
while((line = reader.readLine()) != null){
builder.append(params);
}
reader.close();
messageBox("Response Submitted", "Response Submitted to server" +
builder);
}
catch(Exception exception){
messageBox("Response Failed",exception.getMessage());
}
}

any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

[android-developers] Re: Audio recording problem - fake sample rate

2016-02-04 Thread paul zazzarino

WORKAROUND

Instead of restricting your app for those devices when your recording fails
to meet the sample rate then pop up a dialog and ask the user if your app
should "Emit" the required tone instead of recording.

The end user can then repeatedly play the desired frequency on you app via
a button, they can adjust the piano string to match the frequency they hear
from the device. [ inverse mode ]

They should hear "beats" when the frequencies approach each other.

[android-developers] Android Studio / Gradle - how to force use of aar dependency when both jar and aar are available?

2014-06-16 Thread Paul LeBeau
Hi all

I have an Android library project and, up till now, I have been pushing jar
files to the Maven Central repository. For the latest release I have
pushed a .aar file as well for use by Android Studio users.

However when I try to test the aar file in a project, it doesn't work.
 Android Studio only seems to be able to find the jar version.

My apps build.gradle dependency clause looks like this:

   dependencies {
   compile 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:19.+'
   compile 'com.mydomain:mylibrary:1.2.2-beta-1'
   }

This loads the Jar file successfully. However I want it to use the aar
file because it contains a custom View class and I need access to the
resources.

Is there a way to force it to fetch the aar artifact? I've tried the @aar
trick:

   dependencies {
   compile 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:19.+'
   compile 'com.mydomain:mylibrary:1.2.2-beta-1@aar'
   }

But that doesn't work.

I suppose, at a guess, that it is because my POM file is for the jar (?)
 Is there a way around this issue, or do I need to have a completely
different artifact name for the aar version of my library?

Paul

[android-developers] Re: Android Studio / Gradle - how to force use of aar dependency when both jar and aar are available?

2014-06-16 Thread Paul LeBeau
Okay. Finally worked out that the solution seems to be to use the
following format for the dependency entry:

compile group: 'com.mydomain', name: 'mylibrary', version:
'1.2.2-beta-1', type: 'aar'

[android-developers] App disappearing from my user's phones after update with preferExternal install location in Manifest

the problem (no answers yet so posting here). I have workarounds that I can
give to users that email me, so not looking for that.

Can anybody tell me what is going on here ?
Will deploying another update with auto as install location fix these
problems and prevent them in the future?

And I would love to know why Google doesn't put a note in their docs like
warning: preferExternal will cause your app to go bye bye for some small
percentage of your install base. Seriously !!!

[android-developers] Re: App disappearing from my user's phones after update with preferExternal install location in Manifest

2012-12-06 Thread Paul
It's not a widget. All that has changed of relevance in manifest is this:
android:installLocation=preferExternal (where previously it was not
specified).

Here is one email from a user:
my icon was greyed out and got message saying it was not installed. I went
to the play store and downloaded again and it said it had been purchased.
 Then the icon went grey again soon after. I had to do it twice, then this
morning it was off again.

The fix for this user was to unmount Sd card, re-install app, mount sd card.

[android-developers] Re: App disappearing from my user's phones after update with preferExternal install location in Manifest

2012-12-06 Thread Paul
Thanks Nobu Games, but I'm not worried about what to tell customers (got
that covered), I'm worried about how to fix the problem or make sure the
fewest users are affected.

In other words, does it make sense to deploy another update with
installLocation=auto. Does that improve matters? What is root cause, is
this a known android bug, etc.

If the problem is due to faulty SD cards, then installLocation=auto may
help but only if SD card is unavailable during install (cause then it will
install on internal). If SD card is working during install, the phone might
install on SD anyway, then SD card gets unmounted or something weird and
all apps on SD card become unavailable.

Anyway thanks for the info with your phone.

[android-developers] GCMBroadcast Receiver Enable/Disable

2012-11-28 Thread Paul-Peter Tournaris
Hello guys. In my application i have a gcmbroadcast receiver registered, so
that i can receive PushNotifications.

It is the Basic GCMReceiver Class provided by Google and i have an element
receiver in my Manifest for it.

I added a CheckBox in my Preferences Screen in order to enable/disable it
but i had issues with it. The behaviour i want is to enable and disable the
Receiver based on the value of the CheckBox.

So when the App starts i added a new method to check the value and trigger
it as needed using the ComponentName object and its methods.

Although at first it worked like a charm, in the Preferences Screen, when i
restarted the App it stopped working.

Is there any appropriate way to enable/disable such a Receiver across the
Application?

Thank you in advance.

receiver android:name=com.google.android.gcm.GCMBroadcastReceiver
 android:permission=com.google.android.c2dm.permission.SEND
 android:enabled=true

Receivers registration inside Manifest.

[android-developers] Re: Selling tangible/physical goods

I'm not sure why Lew responded like he did. I think you are correct. In
App billing is for digital goods.

As for your question: What alternatives are available for apps that sell
physical goods?

This
threadhttp://stackoverflow.com/questions/9228869/use-in-app-purchase-for-real-goods

and ZooZ have solutions.

You could load a webview to use a web based payment solution instead of
implementing it in the app as well.

[android-developers] How to finish an Activity that is used in a TabSpec, as the child of TabHost

2012-09-12 Thread Paul Levin

I have Main Activity which contains a TabHost. In the TabHost I have
several TabSpec which use an Intent for the content of the tab.

At certain points in my code I need to remove a tab from the TabHost, and
finish the Activity that was in that tab's TabSpec.

I am able to remove the tab from the TabHost, but as soon as I call finish
on that child Activity, the Main Activity terminates. I have even tried
calling finish some time later, with a timer. It still kills the main
activity.

How can I finish a child activity without killing the main activity?

[android-developers] Redraw errors when manually editing layout files.

2012-08-07 Thread Paul LeBeau
Hi all

If I try to hand edit layout files in the editor, I get awful redraw
errors. That is, the text(/XML) editor renders a different line from what
it is supposed to. If I run the cursor up and down through the file, the
lines change (redraw differently). Trying to edit the file by hand is
extremely frustrating. Does anyone else get this?

Surely it can't be just me, but web searches have failed to turn up any
other reports.

I'm pretty sure it's not my eclipse because I have reinstalled and updated
both eclipse and the ADT plugin and it happens for me in every version.

Is this a known problem and is there a solution?

I'm on Win7 x64. Eclipse Indigo. ADT 20.0.2.  Java 1.6.30.

Paul

[android-developers] posting image to server?

I've read a few Stack Overflow listings about methods to upload a image to

eg

MultipartEntity entity = new

Is there a inbuilt class or method to post binary objects to a web form?

Hola,
I am looking at similar things with an S III.

However *you can not do any card emulation* on an Android by default.
I have only heard of people achieveing this on special flashed ROMs of

achieved it on newer phones like S III.

Certainly any person's phone with any normal Android version will not do

[android-developers] Buttons do not display properly in Graphical Layout Editor (ADT r20 Helios Mac:)

2012-07-05 Thread Paul
Just updated to ADT 20 and none of the buttons in my layouts are displaying
properly in the editor. Anyone else having the problem?

Basically the buttons display with no background (no default grey button
background as they used to). So if I add a new button to the layout it just
shows as text only. Also all existing buttons in my layouts do not display
properly.

During install of ADT 20 there were these issues (showed in a dialog box):
!MESSAGE Marker id 345609 not found.
!MESSAGE Marker id 345610 not found.
!MESSAGE Marker id 345611 not found.

Not sure if those are relevant or not.

Tried uninstalling/re-installing adt 20 to no avail, same problem (but no
dialog box errors on second install).

Thanks.

[android-developers] Re: UTF-8 encoding and decoding

2012-06-18 Thread Paul
On the PHP side use mb_convert_encoding($text, UTF-8) for anything you
are sending to the client. You can also use that function to convert text
entered from a web form (or anywhere else) before storing it in your PHP
database.

 Hi,

 I am implementing an standalone client/server protocol to make one of my

 strings passwed between client and server may have characters that must
 be encoded on UTF-8 (like spanish ñ for example).

 The first thing I though was using hexadecimal notation for each char,
 so an string like ESPAÑA will be enconded and sent as:

 004500530050004100D10041

 But I rather like to avoid this, since it generates an unnecessary
 network load for just one char, and I expect to have hundreds of
 concurrent connections, so it is important to loose all the fat I can...

 I have found this altenative notation may be a good alternative:

 ESPAU+00D1A

 But I did not found where it is documented, also I do not know if
 Android has native functions to handle this, that may be an interesting
 advantage for prefering one notation over another.

 Also this one, claimed to be JavaScript escapes looks interesting,
 with the same load than the previous one:

 ESPA\u00D1A

 I am using this online tool for my testings:

 http://www.rishida.net/tools/conversion/

 Well, bearing in mind that the client will be written in Android, and
 the server in PHP, what you think should be the best option for encoding
 UTF-8 chars during transmission?

[android-developers] Re: ImageView with progress spinner

Try implementing your own Drawable. This way you could draw spinner while

 involved rotating the entire ImageView, which I cannot use for this. I've
 tried replicating the drawable xml used by the system and setting that as
 the source image, but the result is always a static image that doesn't
 spin. Is there some way to set a rotating drawable as the source image?

[android-developers] Connecting to USB-Serial Converter in Android

2012-05-30 Thread Hans Paul
I am attempting to connect to a serial device from a Android tablet, via
USB-Serial Converter. In order to interface with this particular serial
device, a linux library must be used as an interface.
This library takes an integer as an argument, and tries to connect to the
device at the following location : /dev/ttySx, where x is the arguement. If
2 is provided to the library, it will look for the device at /dev/ttyS2.
Very simple.

When I connect the device to Ubuntu, there's is one simple extra step for
this device to work with the USB-Serial convert. The converter is exposed
at the location /dev/ttyUSB1. I just need to create a simple soft-link with
the serial port pattern (etc ln -s /dev/ttyUSV1 /dev/ttyS99). It works
perfectly.

Now the problem arises for Android. The converter is seen at
/dev/bus/usb/01/01. I never seen this convention in other project. The
question is how can I direct the I/O from /dev/ttySX to /dev/bus/usb/01/01

Re: [android-developers] MediaRecorder - buffered encoding of video

2012-03-19 Thread paul
Thanks for the answer. I also think I don't get your point :D
I try to explain my understand of your point with a little graphic.

Timeline:

sec

0---1--2--3-4--5-6-
Sender: StartRecord0();
StopRecord0();StartSend0();StartRecord1();
FinishSend0();StopRecord1();StartSend1();StartRecord2();
FinishSend1();StopRecord2();StartSend2();StartRecord3();

Receiver:StartReceive0();

FinishReceive0();StartPlay0();StartReceive1();
StopPlay0():FinishReceive1(); StartPlay1();StartReceive2();

In my opinion that's the way you mean. But as you see, the recorded video
from second 0 to 2 will be played on the receiver side from second 4 to 6.
Maybe it can be optimized to play the received video-stream directly after
the StartReceive, but so the video is played from second 2 to 4. That means
there is a delay of at least 2 seconds. Am I right?

 Doing it that way, leads to a delay depending on the recording time to that

 I don't think you got the idea... Recording would be happening to fileB
 while previously recorded fileA would be sent through the socket at the
 same time. The only interuption in the video stream would be due to
 stopping of the recording, passing the recorded file to the sender,
 reseting of the recorder and setting it up with the new file. All that
 should take under a second.

 HTH

  I want to use the captured and encoded video for videoconferencing, so
 any kind of delay is not acceptable.
  ..do you mean storing it in the buffer and creating a delay/jitter?
  It seem to me that the video encoder works in that way. I don't want a
 delay.

  You will have to look at double buffering using 2 files ... while one
  is being recorded to, the other will be sent through the socket. Once
  writing is finished, you stop the recorder, point it at new file and
  restart it, while taking just finished file and sending it. Sent
  files can be discarded or left for the sake of having a local copy.

Re: [android-developers] MediaRecorder - buffered encoding of video

2012-03-19 Thread paul
Ok, I agree with you that this would be a working solution, but it is a
very hacky one.
There are some points in that solution that are not acceptable for the
usage in a video-conferencing system:
1. delay: more than 1 sec is too much. Think of a phone call, if you have
to wait 4sec to get an reaction from your callee. That would not work.
2. gaps: when I stop, reset, reconfigure and start the MediaRecoder again,
there is a gap of at least 1 sec. Result: 1sec video = 1sec still-image =
and so on
3. low compression rate: video coding means, reduce temporal redundancies
between the images and transmit only the changes. At the beginning of a
sequence (in our case every second), all the image is changed and I have to
generate a key-frame (large amount of data)
4. low quality: because of 3. I must reduce the video quality to fit the
available data rate from my connection

As a result, it would be better to use JPEG or other still image
compression methods. So I get a constant low frame rate and not a jerky
one. Or use a software h264 encoder like ffmpeg.

I'm very disappointed with that conclusion. There is a hardware h.264
encoder at my device an it is useless.

 Paul,

 Yes, you got it spot on (and well done for your ASCII art skills).

 Now as you can imagine, the video will be transmitted in chunks. The
 size of the all chunks will more-less depend on the size of the
 initial chunk. So in your timeline the delay on the receiver side is
 really 4 chunks not 4 seconds. What if your first chunk was 0.5s long?
 Then the delay is going to be 4 x 0.5s (not counting transmission
 delays). What if you could get away with chunks 0.25sec long? 1 to 2
 sec delay is not bad I think.

 You will struggle to lower it any further, as you are talking about
 establishing of the connection (could be done before the transmission)
 , buffering and shifting that buffer to the receiver. Network latency
 is quite big in mobile data networks. Poor connection (and the data
 rate dropping down to GPRS rates) will affect this too. However this
 solution is adaptive and better bandwidth will make the double
 buffering perform the swaps quicker (which I think is a very nice
 feature).

 Now to achieve the first chunk to have 0.5s or 0.25s, have a look at
 MediaRecorder.setMaxDuration() and MediaRecorder.OnInfoListener. You
 will have to set it only for the first chunk... but possibly there is
 more logic that could be done around it to optimise the whole thing.

  In my opinion that's the way you mean. But as you see, the recorded video

  Maybe it can be optimized to play the received video-stream directly

 means

 You will have to look at double buffering using 2 files ... while one
 is being recorded to, the other will be sent through the socket. Once
 writing is finished, you stop the recorder, point it at new file and
 restart it, while taking just finished file and sending it. Sent
 files can be discarded or left for the sake of having a local copy.

 If you want to control your PC with your phone, you have to send new

[android-developers] Is Single Wire Protocol possible by default on Galaxy Nexus phone and OS4 now?

On an NFC Galaxy Nexus phone with OS4 - and inserting a UICC chip with
some data on it ...
will I be able to read this from another phone or device making use of
the Single Wire Protocol?

(This scenario works between 2 BlackBerrys and in theory should be the
same if I just put that UICC in the Galaxy Nexus?)

(PS I don't want to have a hacked version of Android to achieve this!)

I created a dummy AVD with minimum RAM size, then launch it from a command
line. On my XP system that never manages to start *but* I can then launch
another AVD that does. It's important to do this from a CLI because you can
Ctrl-C to kill both emulator instances, from Eclipse it's not possible to
kill the dummy instance and *bad things* happen.

It might help with your problem.

[android-developers] Hardware Acceleration on Lenovo Tablet in 3.x

2012-01-12 Thread Paul
Hi there. I have an active question over on SO, but thought I'd follow-
up here in the hopes that someone else has seen this issue.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8783438/hardware-acceleration-not-being-enabled

In a nutshell, I am trying to enable hardware acceleration in a 3.1
app and the only device I have it to test on is a Lenovo Tablet, which
reports that it is NOT on (and turning it on in both XML and code
produced no measurable improvement in canvas/drawing performance).

Has anyone else seen this? Am I simply doing something incorrectly?

Thanks.

[android-developers] No more always vibrate for ringtones and notifications in ICS?

Ringtones and notifications no longer have an option to always vibrate
in addition to the sounds? This is needed if you are in a noisy area
where you can't hear the ringtone/notifocation.

 Sorry I don't follow you. How do I do that in the onclick?. I need to loop
 throught them and make a list but how do I loop through them?

 He meant save them when you create them. Obviously it's too late to save
them when you're in the 'onClick()'.

So, during the create loop:

public class YourScreen
{
 private final ListCheckBox allCheckBoxes = new ArrayListCheckBox();
...

 private void createUI()
 {
 CheckBox cb = ...;
 allCheckBoxes.add(cb);
 ...
 }

 OnClickListener clickHandler = new OnClickListener()
 {
 @Override
 public void onClick(View v)
 {
 for (CheckBox cb : allCheckBoxes)
 {
 ...
 }
 }
 };

Do please read the Java coding conventions so your variable names and
indentation are compliant.

[android-developers] Detecting key events from Dialog class?

2011-12-15 Thread Paul Lamb
I've created a simple custom dialog that asks users to Press a key.
The purpose of this is so that I can map whatever key they press to a
function in the app. Unfortunately, I can not figure out what is the
correct interface to use to detect the key events. My class looks like
this:

--
public class ScancodeDialog extends Dialog implements OnKeyListener
{

public ScancodeDialog( Context context )
{
super(context);
setContentView( R.layout.scancode_dialog );
setTitle( Key Listener );
TextView text = (TextView) findViewById( R.id.scancode_text );
text.setText( Please press a button.. );
ImageView image = (ImageView)
findViewById( R.id.scancode_image );
image.setImageResource( R.drawable.icon );

getWindow().setFlags( WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_ALT_FOCUSABLE_IM,

WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_ALT_FOCUSABLE_IM );
}

@Override
public boolean onKey( DialogInterface dialog, int keyCode,
KeyEvent event )
{
if( keyCode != KeyEvent.KEYCODE_MENU )
dismiss();
return true;
}
}
--

I've tried it with and without the getWindow().setFlags() line (that
was a suggestion from another question, which didn't help me in my
case). Obviously I will add more functionality to the class later, but
for now the dialog box should close whenever the user presses a key.
However, onKey is never called.

I originally tried using the key listener interface from View:

import android.view.View.OnKeyListener;

But since a Dialog is not a view, this didn't work. I also tried the
one from DialogInterface:

import android.content.DialogInterface.OnKeyListener;

This seemed like a better choice, since the API indicates that Dialog
implements DialogInterface, but I am still not receiving the key
events. Any suggestions I can try?

 two packages and the old com.android.samples package has a root
 function that returns int and not void.  The new build system is
 complaining about that error and does not generate the Java classes.
 This leads to the R.raw.rslist not being created so neither package is
 happy.

 I can not see a method of running any RenderScript code that I have

Internet timed out, sorry if this double-posts. I have that document
and code examples already (they are what my project is based on).
However they deal almost exclusively with the native code, and do not
even talk about graphics, native or otherwise. The one example that
even has a Java component merely passes input through JNI, nothing
about setting the content view of the NativeActivity, which is what my

  2) Be invisible so the other Activity is visible underneath (not sure

  It seems like option #3 is the most likely way to do this, but the API

Another attempt was to send motion events but motion events appear to
be considered a security issue. [arguuhh, it was so easy in

Funny you can send key events, by motion events appear to be
disallowed [see src code following]

The instrumentation APIs puts too much overhead on selecting gui

Another possibility is to directly talk to the service manager from an

MotionEvent event = MotionEvent.obtain(downTime, eventTime,
MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN, x,y, 0);

[android-developers] Sending emails without user interaction - authentication issue

2011-09-20 Thread Paul
im trying to send an email from my app without the user having to
confirm. I' ve had some success with the winning answer from this
post: sending-email-in-android-using-javamail-api-without-using-the-
default-android-app However, this requires to put the email password
into the code itself. I'd rather not do this for security reasons.
Also I dont want to ask the users for their passwords. That would
probably confuse them. (i would get sceptical if an app would aks me
for my gmail pass)

Is there any way to avoid having to specify the sending password,
maybe by using AccountManager to authenticate with the phone's gmail
account?

Or, how would i go about enctypting the password if i chose to use my
own?

Thanks!

[android-developers] Publish modified APK to the Android Market without triggering an Update to existing users?

2011-09-08 Thread Paul
I'd like to publish a modified APK without triggering an update for my
existing users. Wondering if I can just upload a new one with the same
version number as the one that's out there already. Has anyone done
this?

Why? Because I'm fixing something that is mostly needed by newer
phone's hitting the market and if existing users see an update they'll
expect improvements, new features, etc. They've been waiting for new
stuff for a while and this would just frustrate people. I'm not ready
to deploy new features just yet, but have a fix that is needed for
some newer phone's (different screen sizes) hitting the market.

So I'd like to just deploy the modified apk with the same version. Let
me know if anyone has success doing this and if there were any
problems encountered. Thanks in advance.

everyone to get the new version and so that has guided a lot of how
the documents read. My goal is to just put out a new version that new
buyers will get without affecting existing users.

Thanks for the advice. I will probably do as is usually done and put

benefits us all to understand the nuances of the Android market and
