Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?
Ian, this is not quite true. I am a developer with an app on the market, and I have an existing v1 API key. The problem is, because the debug certificate has a default expiry of 365 days, I can't use it any more (it expired in September). This will be the case for most developers, because it is the default setting. I also didn't realise v1 was being deprecated. I would expect Google to have contacted me by email about this, as I registered for the API key, have an app on Google Play using maps, and was informed via email that Google Maps v2 for websites would be deprecated in favour of v3. I'm pretty shocked about the way this has been handled for Android, and hold Google to a higher standard. So to fix my small bug, I will be forced to upgrade to v2, which is only supported by Android 2.2 and above. 8% of my users are stuck on 1.6 because of fragmentation issues, and you can bet I will be getting some nasty reviews from them on Google Play if I stop supporting their devices. Is there any way to either extend my certificate or change my API key, or am I screwed? Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?
The OP most likely used a debug key throughout and thought he could switch to a release key when he was ready to release. The real issue here is not the missing option to get a v1 key - it is the horrible performance of v2 especially for fast moving maps and the poor memory management. -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. There is a world of a difference, Ian, between updating our software and completely breaking an entire set of APIs. Google did the latter. Many other companies instead keep the old APIs working for years, encouraging developers to develop only for the new API set. Google did the latter. Many other companies instead keep the old APIs working for years, encouraging developers to develop only for the new API set. But we *are* keeping the old APIs working for years. The deprecation is following the normal Google policy. Existing users will be supported for some time to come--something on the order of three years, if I recall correctly. What we're not doing is issuing new keys. I'm unable to think of a way of deprecating an API that's significantly more fair than that. Now Google may have had a good reason for completely scrapping v1 and forcing everyone to migrate to v2 with no backwards compatibility -- but did Google ever communicate this to developers? I never saw this. Evidently, neither did a number of contributors to this thread. We did communicate this via G+ and a fairly prominent paragraph on the Maps API page. We probably could have done more communicating directly from the Android team. As it was, we let the Maps team communicate the change, and perhaps missed many Android developers. Finally, why are you even asking if he got a v1 API key? Even his first post should have made it clear that he got further than that in the development process. For you to insinuate that he did not even get this far shows both laziness on your part and contempt for Google's customers and partners, developers. I think you're being overly harsh with me and overly kind to the OP. I'm not familiar with his development process, but I'm fairly certain that had he requested a key, it would still be operational (see my comments about the deprecation policy, above). If I understood the original post, the developer claimed that he fully developed an app, waited for a period of several months, and then requested a key just before he intended to go live. Perhaps he used someone else's key during development? In any case, you appear to be assuming that we shut down a service without informing its users. This is not the case. We stopped accepting new users into a service which we intend to keep online for a period of several years. No existing users were affected by this change. No users who obtained an API key before beginning development (as they were clearly instructed to do) should have been affected. Hence, my question. If the OP has a key that is not working, then I will do everything within my power to fix that for him. However, it appears that what he has is no key, and no plausible reason for why he didn't obtain a key when it was possible for him to do so. That's significantly more difficult for me to fix. Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?
I'd say Google has multiple ways of announcing important changes, like this list, (the front page of) developer.android.com, G+, blogs etc. For breaking changes, ideally all of them should be used. I don't think Google has to rely on developers being registered in some way to communicate breaking changes in APIs and behaviours. I got bitten by the app encryption resurrection last year which broke any app that accesses resources/assets of another package. Like a fair amount of apps, we use a distribution model where the core app is free and can be extended by paid expansions, each of which is distributed in its own APK from Google Play. App encryption redux meant that accessing expansion APK's assets/ directory from the core app started to fail, silently - no errors indicated, no exceptions thrown, the expansion APK just seemed empty. I believe changes like this should be announced (at least) months ahead of time. There should be explanations of ramifications, there should be migration guides etc. etc. Instead, there was nothing - a two-line mention of app encryption in a change-log blog post but not a word about what it means for people like myself. I apologise if I'm missing anything but googling for an official description of the change and its effects turned out nothing in February still. Docs for createPackageContext() even still say [The returned] Context is the same as what the named application gets when it is launched. ;-) If it weren't for an excellent blog post by Nikolay Elenkov (thanks Nikolay!) I'd probably never know what hit me, or it would have taken me days or weeks to find out. Note that I'm not criticising the app encryption change itself, just the way it was (not) communicated. A change that closes previously open access to something is pretty obvious to break something so acting like this can make you look arrogant. Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?
Although your efforts must have been massive with the map api v1, I guess moving to map api v2 will not be huge effort as it is much cleaner than v1. I had to move to api v2 myself from v1 while I was half-way through the development but, once I spent a day or two with it, I realised that it was very easy for example, list of markers using itemoverlay can be easily implemented using marker object which allows easy display of additional information on clicking the marker. Then, I do not know what kind of animated radius circle you have but, you can easily show polygons in new map api version. So, given you have no other option, give it a shot with a open head. Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?
@Ibendlin Thank you for the friendly response. Who are you anyway? I would expect Google to care, at least. Hopefully I'm not asking to much. My career doesn't revolve around only Google, and I have other things to do than checking each x months if one API has been discontinuated and I need to develop everything again. @Ankita Yes, if there's no other option, I guess I have to. But big minus from my side for Google, even if nobody cares about me (which is also evidently the case / another minus). If find this respectless for developers. Great that Google advances quickly, I also saw good stuff in maps v2. But the point is that I planned this release, I was occupied with other things, and I am being forced now to delay release (how long? no idea, I don't know the new API), and then it has to be tested again, etc. Just because I didn't get an API key for production before March 18. Re: [android-developers] Maps api key v1?
In your message starting this thread, you say: The context: I finished an app a few months ago. I want to release it now. Well, it appears Google has, in its infinite wisdom, decided during those few months not to give anyone a v1 key. Of course, this is inconsiderate to developers, but Google is like that. Even in its worst days, Apple had better relations with independent developers. But no doubt Google would ask, well, what were you doing in those 'few months' that you did not notice the need to update your app for the new API? Android developers have to roll with the punches and live with this kind of abuse from Google, we cannot change it. Complain if you have to to get it out of your system, but then move on. Either drop the app or rewrite it to use the new API. On Monday, April 22, 2013 3:47:10 AM UTC-7, user123 wrote: Can you please stop using this conversation (only) to promote yourself :) thanks. [android-developers] Maps API v2 and WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission
The official documentation for MAPS API v2 states the following: Besides permissions required by other parts of your application, you must add the following permissions in order to use the Google Maps Android API: - android.permission.INTERNEThttp://developer.android.com/reference/android/Manifest.permission.html#INTERNET Used by the API to download map tiles from Google Maps servers. - com.google.android.providers.gsf.permission.READ_GSERVICES Allows the API to access Google web-based services. - android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGEhttp://developer.android.com/reference/android/Manifest.permission.html#WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE Allows the API to cache map tile data in the device's external storage area. My client has requested that we do not use the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission. So my question is, is it really true that this permission is mandatory when using the Maps V2 API and will bad things happen if I don't include it? Since the mapping functionality is not a key feature of the application I am more than happy to take any hit with regards to lake of map cacheing. Re: [android-developers] Maps API v2 and WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission
I haven't tried withholding that permission. You are welcome to give it a shot. I see three possible outcomes: 1. You crash immediately, just as you will if you do not have the uses-feature element for OpenGL ES 2.0, as Maps V2 checks some of this stuff as part of its initialization. 2. You crash almost immediately, when Maps V2 goes to store data on external storage and fails due to not having the permission. 3. You succeed today, but will still have the possibility of #1 or #2 in future updates to the Play Services library. Re: [android-developers] Maps API v2 and WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission
I think it's definitely option 3, as everything appears to work but I then live in fear that it can die at any random point in the future. I think I'll give the client the option with a strong opinion that they really should include it and if they take the risk to exclude that is up to them! [android-developers] Maps API Key doesn't seem to work.
Hi guys! -I've searched the forum but the proposed solutions to similar problems doesn't do it for me; When I define my MapView with the API Key generated from the MD5 sum off of the debug keystore file, the maps load up fine on my device. (and the emulator) When I define my MapView with the API Key generated from the MD5 sum off of the release keystore file, the maps are blank. I checked the signing keystore several times, as well as its MD5 sum and the resulting API Key, and everything seems to be in order. I'd like to generate a new keystore and upload the app with that, but the Map Feature is an addition to an existing app on the store, so I can't (easily) upload it without creating a new Google Play entry. I'm clueless on what to do, I've been fighting with this for a week now. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Maps API : drawing driving itinerary
I am developing a maps application which will display a user defined driving itinerary. I obtain the driving directions from the Directions Web Service and parse the json response in a separate thread. I then hand the resulting itinerary object to my custom overlay for display. Before appending the overlay to the maps overlay list, I decode the polyline strings to obtain the coordinates. My drawing code obtains the projection object and draws out the line - this is taking 18 seconds ! ! ! Here is my code : @Override public void draw(Canvas cv, MapView view, boolean shadow) { GeoCoordsE6 point = null; // utility class holding a geopoint and a point class with a method to handle projection manipulation int iScreenWidth = view.getWidth(); int iScreenHeight = view.getHeight(); Paint paintLine = null;new Paint(); if(shadow) { super.draw(cv, view, shadow); return; } long lStartMs = android.os.SystemClock.uptimeMillis(); paintLine = new Paint(); paintLine.setColor(m_iLineClr); paintLine.setAntiAlias(true); paintLine.setStyle(Paint.Style.FILL_AND_STROKE); paintLine.setStrokeJoin(Paint.Join.ROUND); paintLine.setStrokeCap(Paint.Cap.ROUND); paintLine.setStrokeWidth(4); // get the projection to work with Projection pj = view.getProjection(); // get the first lat/lng position point = m_ItinLine.item(0); // convert the coorinates to screen pixels point.ResolvePosition(pj); // store the start position m_ptStart.x = point.m_pt.x; m_ptStart.y = point.m_pt.y; // now walk through the array list for(int i = 1; i m_ItinLine.count(); i++) { point = m_ItinLine.item(i); point.ResolvePosition(pj); m_ptEnd.x = point.m_pt.x; m_ptEnd.y = point.m_pt.y; if(m_ptStart.x 0 m_ptEnd.x 0 ||// to the left m_ptStart.y 0 m_ptEnd.y 0 ||// above the top m_ptStart.x iScreenWidth m_ptEnd.x iScreenWidth ||// to the right m_ptStart.y iScreenHeight m_ptEnd.y iScreenHeight)// below the bottom { // ignore the drawing } else if(m_ptStart.x == m_ptEnd.x m_ptStart.y == m_ptEnd.y) continue; else { cv.drawLine(m_ptStart.x, m_ptStart.y, m_ptEnd.x, m_ptEnd.y, paintLine); } m_ptStart.x = m_ptEnd.x; m_ptStart.y = m_ptEnd.y; } long lEndMs = android.os.SystemClock.uptimeMillis(); Log.d(ItineraryOverlay, Drawing took + (lEndMs - lStartMs) + ms); super.draw(cv, view, shadow); } Knowing that a number of people have done similar tasks, can anyone advise me as to how to improve the performance ? [android-developers] Maps API - internal persistence of data
I am building a maps api application and have noticed that the map position and zoom levels are restored upon subsequent application launches. Is it possible to access this persistence store so as to be able to control and detect what data is going to be restored. This would be notably useful to not have to reinvent the same process. In addition, it would appear that it will restore the last position using a default marker - which in my case is not necessarily what is needed. I would prefer being able to do this through correct api calls as opposed to hacking it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. Re: [android-developers] Maps API - internal persistence of data
Hi Mark, Thank you for your rapid reply (notably for a Saturday). You are right - I spoke too soon. I was creating the marker myself (*now that's embarrassing*). It would appear that the last location, zoom level and map type is preserved. It would still be good to be able to grab this, I feel. I see no markers if I have not added them myself via an overlay. -- Mark Murphy (a Commons Guy) http://commonsware.com | http://github.com/commonsguy http://commonsware.com/blog | http://twitter.com/commonsguy Android App Developer Books: http://commonsware.com/books -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Maps API and legacy
Hi all, I found this post This posting http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2023669/j2me-android-blackberry-driving-directions-route-between-two-locations suggests that you must not use the Map Service with any applications for route guidance, including but not limited to turn-by-turn route guidance that is synchronized to the position of a user's sensor- enabled device so if I understand we can use maps API to retrieve a route between two points (and kml file provided by the URL) and draw on a mapview the way. Is it right ? Thanks for your answer -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Maps API - controlling size of streets, font?
Out of the box, MapView's presentation of streets and their labels (street names) is rather small-ish. Is there any way to control this? Comparing a MapView-based app against Google's Maps app, the difference is rather obvious, in particular when zooming out. Has anybody found a switch to modify the behavior of the underlying MapView to get closer to where Googls Maps' behavior is? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Maps API keyword search
is there any possibility to search the maps for keywords? e.g. search for pizza and I'll get a list of results near my location. i found the pizza-sample for a about 2year old SDK version which doesn't work anymore (http://davanum.wordpress.com/2007/11/15/working-with- google-androids-maps-aka-search-for-pizza/). i found the Geocoder class with the getFromLocationName method but this doesn't give me any results when i search for e.g. pizza but works e.g. for austria. i also found the GmmGeocoder which seems to have a query method - but does also not exist anymore. i'm now searching for about 5 hours without any results. the only thing what i want is the same functionality like the maps application. when you search for pizza in the maps application, you'll find a list of results. i would need these results in my android application any help would be appreciated -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Android Developers group. [android-developers] Maps API on platform 1.5
Hi. This might be a dummy question, but I just can't find a solution for it. I'm trying to write my first map application for android 1.5 following this tutorial: http://mobiforge.com/developing/story/using-google-maps-android However, when I make my activity class to extend from MapActivity, Eclipse complains that there's no such class/interface (it underlines it red). Is there a JAR file I should add to my class path or something like that to make Eclipse find MapActivity class? [android-developers] maps api and 1.5
Sorry guys, originally i posted to discussion which is the wrong place. I'm migrating over an application from 1.1 to 1.5 and it uses the Google maps. I got through most of the class path issues resolved I think but when launching the application I get the following message. 04-18 13:19:11.598: WARN/dalvikvm(816): Class resolved by unexpected DEX: Lnet/company/android/OrgMapActivity;(0x43732af0):0x192310 ref [Lcom/google/android/maps/MapActivity;] Lcom/google/android/maps/ MapActivity;(0x43732af0):0x188228 04-18 13:19:11.598: WARN/dalvikvm(816): Unable to resolve superclass of Lnet/company/android/OrgMapActivity; (106) 04-18 13:19:11.608: WARN/dalvikvm(816): Link of class 'Lnet/company/ android/OrgMapActivity;' failed So it looks like the error is Unable to resolve superclass which I think is caused by not having uses-library android:name=com.google.android.maps / in the androidmanifest. In my case, this line is in there. Is there a new uses-library for 1.5? Docs say that it's ok. Or specific classpath settings since the maps.jar has been moved out? I'm not getting compilation errors, just runtime. I tried moving the maps.jar into the assets directory and that did not work either. Some other trace is below. Thanks in advance! [android-developers] Maps API Key to run in emulator, is it necessary??
hi there, kind of confused with this, found two documentations: http://code.google.com/android/toolbox/apis/mapkey.html Stated: Because MapView gives you access to Google Maps data, you need to register with the Google Maps service and agree to the applicable Terms of Service before your MapView will be able to obtain data from Google Maps. This will apply whether you are developing your application on the emulator or preparing your application for deployment to mobile devices. http://code.google.com/android/reference/com/google/android/maps/package-descr.html Stated: In order to use a MapView in your app, you need to include the android:apiKey attribute in the MapView (or include a key in the MapView constructor). For now, just put any value there (e.g., myapikey) so, do I need it or not? Also, where can I find any sample that loads a map? [android-developers] Maps API access to SKY Tiles
I'm interested in accessing the Sky database using the Maps API in Android. While there are direct methods for boolean queries and setting states for traffic, satellite, and streetview I don't see anyway to change to the Google Sky database. The javascript Maps API has sky, mars, moon and much more but that would require I do all my programming through the browser as a web app. I would really prefer to use a MapView and take advantage of the Android OS. Does anyone have any suggestions on how this could be done? Is there a way to utilize Maps API commands (the javascript version) from within Android (ie: mapview method to change map tiles to sky tiles)?
