I never claimed that you all responding was some kind of success - I think
we can all agree this thread was overall rather pointless (in fact I said so
early on).

I'm simply pointing out the fact that 5 of you now have taken a few minutes
of your time to comment on this thread and that that is so much more than we
can expect regarding actual, legitimate issues concerning the Android
Market.

Yes, I realize none of you work on Market and I'm by no means trying to
group you all with those idiots. So many of you are readily available to
contribute to many threads and it's always appreciated.

It's the fact that there's not even a single individual on the Market end of
things that is willing or able to contribute to even the simplest of issues
that has me so royally peeved.

But whatever. I don't expect any of you to understand. I'm sure things are
nice and cushy being on the inside. But man oh man if you could experience
life as a lowly Android Devlepor for just one week you might start ranting
and bitching as much as I do around here.

Oh, I think you mean this thread, concerning being banned from the Market:

Of course you are correct - this forum is not about the Market and, as you

Fair enough. So let's take a look over there, shall we?

Here is the same question about the in-app billing not working:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?tid=331d1590e7ae94dbhl=en

And here is the same question about the content policy that you told the OP

http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Android+Market/thread?fid=6d6cc0380c0b10d500049d3f4f0f3433hl=en

Now let's count the total number of responses from Google. Zero. In fact,
the only response to either question is from yours truly telling the poster
that no one is going to respond to them. Even sadder, my responses are the
best answer. Unfortunately, I continue to be correct.

See, the problem is that people go to the official support forum looking
for help and they get ignored. Then they move over into other
Android-related forums hoping to get answers. Unfortunately, they are either
ignored again or are re-directed back to the appropriate forum where they
were ignored to begin with.

Understood. I meant no offense to any of you and I'm sure the other two that
I personally have not seen around here before help out elsewhere that I'm
not aware of.

My point is simply this: getting actual support or answers for legitimate
issues relating to the Android Market is nigh impossible - regardless of the
channel one goes through. Meanwhile a thread with the threat of being
spammed gets the attention of 4 Googlers. Pathetically, this thread has
received more Google attention than anything in the Market Support forum,
whether the responders have anything to do with the Market or not.

And *that* is what I find so very sad about this situation.

Yes, we really, REALLY need that meaningful interaction with Google
about the market.
What we have had to date is more like a parody of really bad customer
service (think Lily Tomlin and the Phone Company).

After all: even if we disagree with much of Rich's Rant, there is one
thing we should all agree on: removing an application from the Market
without even an explanation is simply unacceptable. So is providing no
means of defending oneself against an accusation of violating the user
agreement. So is threatening to stifle the discussion by classifying
the posts as off-topic.

 the Market team are
currently up to in their lunar base on the dark side of the moon. Does
anyone know if content ratings will ever be used for anything???

This thread should probably be moved to Android Discuss if that is

Take your pick:
http://www.google.com/support/androidmarket/bin/search.py?ctx=en%3Asearchboxforum=1query=app+suspended

Many of those posts are from people that did not realize they were violating
any terms. Some of them are very clear that they don't think they did
anything wrong, don't know why they got pulled, and just want to know the
reason so they can update their apps and not violate anything.

But of course when Google yanks an app, they don't explain *why*.

Maybe you violated terms, or maybe someone on the Market team is having a
bad day and picks an app at random. Who knows.
This is fairly convenient as not providing a reason means Google has nothing
to defend, can yank apps at their whim, and there's nothing anyone can do
about it.

Not to detract from your point in any way, but some of them are quite

At the very least, the message from Android Market should give a link

[android-developers] Re: Announcing: The Android Developers Union

2011-03-02 Thread Indicator Veritatis
The following lines from the charter show whose interpretation of it
is questionable. Hint: it isn't Rich's:

Allowed discussion topics
Most of our groups are for technical discussions of Android or users
helping each other. Generally we don't put hard restrictions on the
topics discussed in the group: as long as the topic is relevant to
Android in some way, it's welcome on our groups. We welcome
announcements and discussion of products, libraries, publications, and
other interesting Android-related news, but please do not cross-post.
Post only to the most relevant group for your message. We even welcome
(polite!) discussion of articles and ideas critical of Android--after
all, we can't improve if we don't listen.

Rich, I am sure, really believes his Union of Android Developers is
trying to help all us developers. Of course, there is room for dispute
on this, as M. Murphy has made clear. But users helping each other is
what this group is for, even if the help turns out to be, ah,
misguided;)

Rich's topic most certainly is relevant to Android, therefore
according to the charter which YOU cited, it is welcome on our
groups. Only by ignoring this whole passage and equivocating can you
justify classifying his post as unsolicited email of a commercial
nature.

Stop trying to prove the truth of we can't improve if we don't
listen. For your post really does read like nothing more than a
contrived excuse not to listen to his very valid criticisms of the
Market.

Then again, I suppose there is likely a group more relevant, though
Rich can certainly claim this group is relevant since the Market
affects all developers.

2011-03-02 Thread Peter Sinnott
Granted spamming people not directly involved with the Market isn't
going to do much to
improve the situation but some people are prone to taking useless
action over doing nothing.
Ideally there would be some way for developers to have meaningful
interaction with Google
about the market instead of continually being forced to wonder what
the Market team are
currently up to in their lunar base on the dark side of the moon. Does
anyone know if content ratings will ever be used for anything???

This thread should probably be moved to Android Discuss if that is
possible since that is a more appropriate group
but nobody from Google will ever make a meaningful response to it
their either.

Oh you mean a response answering question about Market? As I said there,

The people here work on the platform, not on Market. We can't talk about

I believe all of the people who posted here have posted to other lists.
Some of them are more likely to post to the open source lists, etc.

[android-developers] Re: Announcing: The Android Developers Union

2011-03-01 Thread Rich
How is it silly? Many developers have had their apps removed without
warning and it's frankly unacceptable. I make my _living_ off of
application develop and this kind of instability is intolerable,
especially considering that Google has taxed me out of over ten
thousand dollars.

Just because market conditions are better than other places, doesn't
mean that they are good, and not worth improving. (And, quite frankly,
there are many reasons which Apple's App Store are superior in terms
of curation, quality, and customer navigability of new apps.)

And yes, of course the aesthetic is a tongue in cheek joke, but the
demands are very real.

While I appreciate your effort and agree with your intent, this is rather
pointless. Your phrasing is childish and the graphic on the site is comical
at best. No one is going to take this seriously - particularly the people
 that you're targeting.

2011-03-01 Thread Romain Guy
Rich,

I am very sorry you feel this way. However, setting up an online form that
may be used by anyone to spam a few individuals working on Android is not
the appropriate solution (especially since these individuals, including
myself, do *not* work on Market.)

I'm sorry you are not satisfied with the experience you've had with
Android Market so far. I look forward to seeing your applications on
other platforms.

Please note that the page you have put up encourages people to send
unsolicited email of a commercial nature in bulk. Spamming or a call
to spam someone is an unacceptable use of this group. Please review
the group charter at http://source.android.com/community/groups-charter.html
and reconsider your spam campaign.
