REMINDER: VCDL's 2018 MEMBERSHIP CONTEST END ON DECEMBER 31

To increase VCDL’s membership, the Board of Directors approved a membership
drive contest running until the end of 2018.

That is a win-win for everyone!

If you open a VCDL membership brochure and unfold the left panel, you will see
there is a place for "Show ID / Date / Volunteer Member #" on the top of the
leftmost panel. Simply write in your VCDL membership number on that line before
handing the brochure to a NEW prospective member. When that person mails in the
brochure page with payment, you will get a credit.

If the person joins using the VCDL website instead, there is a place him or her
to enter your membership number. Be sure to tell them to do so.

The member with the most credits as of December 31, 2018 will get a choice of
either a rifle, shotgun, or one of three handguns! The person in second place
will get the next choice out of the remaining firearms, and so on, until the
top 5 individuals have received a firearm. Ammunition or other prizes will be
given to those who place in positions 6 through 10.

***The winners will be announced at Lobby Day 2019!***

Working VCDL's booth at gun shows and other events is a good way to increase
your recruitment numbers. Signing up friends, family, coworkers, or handing out
brochures at non-VCDL events is another way.

FIREARMS OR AMMO DONATIONS REQUESTED FROM INTERESTED FFLS

If you are a firearms dealer and wish to donate a firearm, ammunition, or other
prize for the contest, please contact Philip Van Cleave at: presid...@vcdl.org.
Your donation will be acknowledged in VA-ALERT, at Lobby Day, and on the VCDL
website!

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone!

6. Petition status update

1. NRA-ILA - keep the pressure up!

The NRA-ILA has heard from hundreds of us and there has been a response through
the state representative. Yes, the message has excuses for the NRA-ILA not to
help, but we can turn this around if enough of us make our voices heard! If
you haven't done this yet, please do so:

We have 13 days left to reach 100,000 signatures on the National Concealed
Carry Reciprocity petition. As of 3pm on August 4th there are right at 17,000
signatures. We have a long ways to go in those 17 days!

We need national groups to step up to the plate, including the NRA!

Here in Virginia there is a statewide NRA-ILA coordinator. I think he would be
a logical person to contact about this. I've met him in person and he's
excellent. Knowing the NRA, he can't make any decisions himself, but he should
be able to pass our message up the chain of command.

TIME IS SHORT: EVERYONE, please contact:

Patrick DeStefano
email: patr...@nrailafrontlines.com
Phone: 864-680-0399

and politely ask him to have the NRA join the fight to get those 100,000
signatures by August 17th!

**Tell friends and family outside of Virginia to call the NRA-ILA headquarters
about the petition! Spread the word!**

Contact GOA, CCRKBA, and SAF, too!

2. Correction on checking CHP renewal effective date

I came down with a bad case of type-o-itis in the last Update. Here is the
corrected item #4 with "90 to 100 days" changed to "90 to 180 days." Ugh.

-

Member Leo Carling and others have caught a mistake on their renewed permits,
where the effective date is wrong.

If you put in your renewal application between 90 and 180 days before
expiration of your existing permit, the new permit should begin on the date
your existing permit expires. Warren County and others have made this mistake.

DO NOT LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT. Talk to the Circuit Court Clerk directly and
demand a corrected permit ASAP.

3. VCU doesn't trust its own "no guns" policy ;-)

Thanks to member Clayton Rhoades for the link and his acute observation: "VCU
must not believe in their own gun ban very much to do exercises to simulate an
attack."

VCU knew their gun ban wouldn't make anyone safer from the beginning. As with
all gun bans, it only endangers those it purports to be protecting. More and
more states are allowing college/university carry and of which has been
successful. Here in Virginia, Liberty University is leading the way.

4. Richmond Times-Dispatch editorial stomps on the imaginary "gun show
loophole"

http://www.richmond.com/opinion/our-opinion/editorial-the-gun-show-loophole-seems-to-have-shrunk/article_de9cdcc4-48ea-5862-b1d7-75b1445fbb03.html

Editorial: The gun-show loophole seems to have shrunk

If you follow debates in Virginia’s General Assembly, you might get the
impression that the state could sharply curtail the violent-crime rate if only
lawmakers would close the “gun-show loophole.” New data suggest the impression
is mistaken.

Federally licensed firearm dealers must conduct a background check on
prospective purchasers, but private sellers don’t have to. That’s true
regardless of whether the transaction takes place at a gun show or not. Yet to
hear advocates and some legislators talk, you’d think gun shows provide
hardened criminals with a steady stream of easy weapons.

In fact, the claim has never held up well. Most criminals get their guns
through other means, such as “sharing arrangements with fellow gang

AOL SUBSCRIBERS ONLY:

Back in late December, AOL bounced around 1,200 VCDL VA-ALERT subscribers off
of the list. We thought we had it restored several weeks ago and sent out a
message like this, but AOL bounced all of you off again. :-(

It takes about 30 minutes each time for me to resubscribe everyone.

AOL has now assured us that they have fixed the issue this time. Let's hope.

If you are an AOL subscriber, are seeing this message, and haven't been
receiving alerts so far this year, hopefully all is OK now.

If you wish to get caught up the alerts you have missed, you can look at the

*** If you are not an AOL email customer, you can disregard this message ***

Back on December 27, 2016, AOL for some reason bounced everyone on VA-ALERT who
has an AOL email account. We lost well over 1,000 subscribers in one fell
swoop. (AOL has had issues before.)

Some of you AOL customers probably were wondering why there were no alerts
during the busy legislative season. Now you know why.

If you ever suspect you might have been unsubscribed for some reason, it is
easy to see if any VCDL alerts or updates have gone out recently by going to
the VCDL.org web site and looking at "VA-ALERT Archives" under the "VA-ALERT"
menu item at the top.

If you see a bunch of alert items that you never received, there's a good
chance you have become unsubscribed. This can happen if emails sent to you
bounce too many times or if you have marked any VA-ALERT messages as "SPAM."

Anyway, we have finally got a resolution with AOL and we reactivated all your
accounts.

We lost you at one of the most important times of the year :-(

Click here to see the current status of gun bills in the General Assembly.
You'll notice that all of the gun-control bills are dead and gone and a slew of
gun-rights bills are alive, with several already heading to the Governor's desk.

A VCDL Update will be coming out later tonight.

GOOD FOR A LAUGH

A reporter from the Smithfield Times sent me this email (I kid you not). I am
choosing to laugh and not cry. It will be interesting to see their coverage,
as I’m sensing some bias:

"Mr. Van Cleave,

Why do you think it is necessary for members to attend the meeting armed? Is
it an attempt to intimidate people?

Thanks!"
