It is a brilliant achievement. For the entire nation, it is a very

Rahman's contribution to music has been immense and this award is

I share similar views. For me Delhi 6 is like a piece of abstract
art with gentle brush strokes. Its very metaphoric. I liked the whole
format and narrative, which may or may not be box office friendly. The
characters were well etched and the AR's score elevated the film.
Beautiful camera work and I loved the whole concept of Dil Gira

[arr] Getting ’em home may be taxing

2009-02-24 Thread Anantha Dreamer
Deepshikha Sikarwar NEW DELHI (Economic Times)

SLUMS can become skyscrapers but, doggone it, some things never change fast
enough. Like our laws, which clearly haven’t factored in India’s new topdog
role. And the latest victim of that could be AR Rahman, freshly annointed
the music king of Hollywood. While the two Oscars he won for Slumdog
Millionaire should be priceless, our eagle-eyed government officials have
found out that each gilt statuette is actually worth $500 — which makes the
second one liable to be charged customs duty!
This lacuna, with its huge embarrassment potential, however, has been
spotted in time by a fellow Tamilian, home minister P Chidambaram, given his
long innings in the finance ministry. He has promptly made a recommendation
to exempt Rahman from the outdated rule that allows Indians to bring a
paltry Rs 25,000 worth of duty-free baggage into the country. It is hoped
that Pranab Mukherjee, now handling the finance portfolio, already has his
officials working on a clarification. Jai Ho! But why should Rahman be in
this predicament at all?
Well, at $500, each Oscar is worth Rs 24,870 (taking $1= Rs 49.74),
which puts Rahman’s baggage at around Rs 25,000 above the permitted
duty-free allowance — presuming there are no other take-ways from this
historic event. Mr Chidambaram has thought of that too. *Rahman may have to
pay Rs 8,925 *
“IF the Oscars carry a cash award, I will recommend to the finance minister
that it should be exempt from taxation,” he said at the foundation stone
laying ceremony of Rajaswa Bhavan (where top tax officials will have
offices), at which Mr Mukherjee was also present.
But if things don’t move fast enough, Mr Rahman will have to pay customs
duty at the rate of 35.7% on the value of one Oscar, totalling Rs 8,925.
Admittedly that’s peanuts for the music maestro, but the government will
find it tough to explain the blanket application of an arcane law. More so,
since sportspersons who represent India at international fora are now given
duty exemption, like Sachin Tendulkar.

Anantha the Dreamer

[arr] Re: I dedicate this award to my country

2009-02-24 Thread avyayan
Just as Rahman passed on all praise to the universal Almighty power,
I am touched to hear Rasool mentioning the primordial sound of the
universe, Om, in his acceptance speech. It's gratifying to see people
transcending the boundaries of their faith and accepting all that's
good from all over. Such people inspire us to always choose love over
hate - and just look at the heights scaled by those who choose to do
so!

Let me record my formal congrats to Rahman and Rasool for doing India
proud on an international stage. They are truly our global
ambassadors. More than that, their awards are the long overdue
recognition of the soul-stirring work they do to make people happy,
regardless of affiliation.

For those who missed Resul's acceptance speech at the Oscars, here
it is: 'This is unbelievable. We can't believe this. Ladies and
gentlemen... sorry I share the stage with two magicians, you
know, who created the very ordinary sounds of Bombay, the cacophony
of Bombay, into a soul-stirring, artful resonance called Slumdog
Millionaire.
I come from a country and a civilization that given the universal
word. That word is preceded by silence, followed by more silence.
That word is 'Om.' So I dedicate this award to my country. Thank you,
Academy, this is not just a sound award, this is history being handed
over to me. My sincere and deepest gratitude to my teachers, Danny
Boyle [Images], Christian Colson, Paul Ritchie, Pravesh... and
everybody who has contributed to this film, Glenn Freemantle and all
the sound mixers. I dedicate this to you guys. Thank you, Academy.
Thank you very much.

2009-02-24 Thread V S Rawat
Sorry if it has already been clarified here. I am not able to cope up
with the huge avalanche of mails (I am not complaining though).

Jai Ho got Oscar as a song. What is the status of its composer,
lyricist, singers, chorus artists, other instruments players and
technicians, etc.?

Can they be called Oscar winners themselves individually, or are they
called the contributors for an Oscar winner song or what?

That means Gulzar ji, Sukhwinder and other singers, etc. didn't win an
Oscar for themselves. Several of my friends and even i myself were under
the impression that Gulzar ji got Oscar.

I never thought Hindi lyrics could win an Oscar: Gulzar

Published Feb 23, 2009 by News Desk

New Delhi, Noted lyricist Gulzar, who shared the Oscar for his song Jai
ho in Slumdog Millionaire with A.R. Rahman, has confessed that he
never thought Hindi lyrics could win the golden statuette.

I never thought in the wildest of my dreams that Hindi lyrics can ever
win an Oscar. Indian songs never had a place there (in the West) and the
credit for this recognition goes to Rahman, Gulzar told a news channel.

The lyricist was gaga over composer A.R. Rahman.

He said: What a team to work with. You see the spirit of a film in his
music. It's a pleasure to work with that man. He is an amazing innovator
- the way he innovates the sounds is just amazing.

He is the one who broke the cliched methods of music compositions in
the country and his innovativeness is the reason he has reached the
Oscars. I am really proud of him, Gulzar added.

very rightly said. i was also remembering the same. also while

mentioned something like ARR's # Oscar and I prayed in my heart and

for some big hollywood movie with some renowned director. and here we

Batting ace Sachin Tendulkar is extremely elated by India's showing at the
 Oscars.

It is a brilliant achievement. For the entire nation, it is a very proud
 moment, Tendulkar
 said this morning.

The master blaster, who had had a word with A R Rahman a couple of days
 ago, was confident that
the musical genius will walk away with the honours.

Rahman's contribution to music has been immense and this award is only a
 mere reflection of
what he has been able to contribute to music and to India.

I had spoken to him not only about this, but about other albums as well.
 He has always been
able to produce something special in every album, Tendulkar said.

Rahman won two Oscars - for the best original score and the best song.

Foreign language winners

Manos Hadjidakis was the first to receive this award for a song originally
written in a language other than English, in 1960 for Never on Sunday (Greek
title Ta Paidia toy Peiraia) from the Greek film Never on Sunday (Greek title
Pote tin Kyriaki).
Jorge Drexler was the second foreign language songwriter to win the Best
Original Song Oscar, for Al Otro Lado del Río from The Motorcycle Diaries in
2004. That year another foreign language writing pair were nominated, composer
Bruno Coulais and lyricist Christophe Barratier for Vois Sur Ton Chemin (Look
To Your Path) from the French movie Les Choristes.
A. R. Rahman and Gulzar are the third and fourth foreign language songwriters
to win in the Best Original Song category, which they shared for the Hindi song
Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire, at the 81st Academy Awards in 2009. That
same year, O... Saya, another partly Hindi song from the same film by Rahman
and M.I.A., was also nominated, making it the first time two foreign language
songs were nominated in the category.http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/

One Question..Is Jai Ho the first non-english song to be nominated and have
won the oscars in the best song category?

I also concede that these awards brought these boundless joys because
these were the firsts. Our man has changed the paradigm, our man has
broken the spell, our man has widened the horizons. Now he and many
others would get these and other nominations and awards, but that would
be a repeat, a routine, a confirmation that what our man has done now
was not a fluke, not a one song wonder, not a one film wonder.

Still, I think that when (not if) a fully Indian film (made solely by
Indian born guys in all major departments) would get these awards, that
would again be as joyous.

Brand Speak

“I had a choice between love and hate, and I chose love. That’s why I am here
today.” – AR
Rahman on winning his second Oscar.

The Mozart from Madras created history on February 23, 2009 in Los Angeles and
sent entire
India into a euphoric frenzy. A special mention here for the hugely talented
Resul Pookutty as
well, who brought home the third Oscar for Sound Mixing.

The reverberations of Rahman’s two Oscar wins will be felt for a long time and
also celebrated
by brands that the music maestro endorses. Rahman’s association with these
brands has been long
and epoch making. He has given them a lot of credibility, respect, immense
value addition in
terms of brand positioning and a lot of social causes that the brands got
associated with
through him.

Congratulating Rahman, Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman and Group CEO, Bharti
Enterprises, said,
“The global acclaim for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ mirrors the growth story of
India. This signals
the arrival of India on the world entertainment stage. In particular, AR
Rahman’s unique double
Oscar win has made all of us very proud. Airtel has shared a long friendship
with Rahman, who
composed the Airtel signature tune, which is synonymous with the brand today.
Our heartiest
congratulations to Rahman and the entire ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ team.”

Nearly two years back, the opening song of Spike Lee’s movie ‘Inside Man’ had
made many in the
audience feel that a wrong soundtrack was being played. But as the air cleared,
it made every
Indian who watched that movie enjoy the magic of Rahman’s music in a Hollywood
flick for the
first time.

The song was ‘Chaiya Chaiya’, originally from the SRK-starrer ‘Dil Se’. Rahman
had also
enthralled the London West End with his music for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical
‘Bombay
Dreams’.

Thus, even before the Oscars, Rahman had introduced the world to his unique
brand of melody.
The Golden Statuettes are just a culmination of that popularity. The road to
the Oscars was
paved with wins at the British Academy Award (BAFTA) and Golden Globe.

An exclusive note from Airtel gives a brief history of Rahman’s association
with the brand. The
music maestro became Airtel’s brand ambassador in 2002. The brand campaign for
Airtel in 2002
featuring Rahman was the first time he appeared in a television commercial.
When Rahman
composed the tune, Airtel had two million customers. Today, Airtel claims to
have over 90
million customers. The Airtel signature tune composed by Rahman is stated to be
the world’s
most downloaded piece of mobile music with over 60 million downloads.
Incidentally, this tune
has made its appearance in several forms, including car reverse music.

Chandrasekar Radhakrishnan, Senior VP - Marketing, Airtel, said, “We would like
to congratulate
AR Rahman for winning the most coveted prize in world cinema and setting new
benchmarks for the
Indian music industry. Our association with Rahman goes back a long way. He
embodies the Airtel
value of leadership and trust in his field of music. Music is a key platform
for Airtel to
express the brand – exhibited through various products and associations. With
time, he has
become synonymous with the music of our brand through the evergreen Airtel
tune, background
scores for key advertising campaigns and his presence in music sponsorships/
associations.
Rahman is without doubt one of the finest artists that our country has seen and
Airtel is proud
of the achievements of its brand ambassador in the world arena.”

Speaking on Rahman as a brand ambassador, Ramnuj Shastry, CCO, Rediffusion YR,
said, “AR
Rahman’s Oscar feat is just a worldwide acknowledgement of something that we
Indians always
knew – that the man is a genius. Rahman, who has scored the Airtel tune, has
been a brand
ambassador of Airtel for the longest time. Through the universal language of
music, he has
always done what Airtel stands for – breaking barriers. And these awards shall
just
re-emphasise the fact that both the brand and the brand ambassador are world
class.”
Rediffusion YR is the creative agency for Airtel.

Rahman has also been Nokia’s brand ambassador quite a few times. Other than
being associated
with Nokia’s various products and features, he had taken up the social cause of
eradicating
poverty and facilitating education for under-privileged children by joining
hands with Nokia
NSeries.

Rahman’s Oscar wins has Chennai FM stations and other music media in a frenzy
to celebrate the
maestro’s feat. Big FM Chennai has rolled out programmes where Rahman’s songs
are being played
on-air throughout the day. Listeners are invited to call up on-air and wish
Rahman, RJs are
meeting listeners during outdoor shows and taking their wishes on-air, and
celebrities, too,
are dropping in with their wishes for

[arr] Oscar would help do bigger things: A.R. Rahman

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://www.musicindiaonline.com/n/i/top_stories/2869/

New York, Feb 23 : An Oscar award would be a 'great honour' and help do 'bigger
things', says Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, a hot favourite to take home a
trophy for his music in 'Slumdog Millionaire'.
It would be a great honour, Rahman told the New York Times in a telephone
interview from Los Angeles, where he was preparing to perform at the ceremony.
It would help me to do bigger things.
Asked to elaborate, Rahman named some Western directors he would like to work
with. Baz Luhrmann... Ridley Scott. I'm a big fan of Ridley.
The Times notes Rahman is one of the most prolific and successful film
composers in India. He has three nominations for Danny Boyle's Slumdog
Millionaire - best original score and best original song, for Jai Ho and O
... Saya, a collaboration with the Sri Lankan-British rapper M.I.A.
Rahman, 43, has already won a Golden Globe for best score for Slumdog
Millionaire.
I like to see a film and then start scoring it in my mind, while doing
something unrelated, the maestro said. You just grasp a film and start
working, and something unpredictable comes out from a third element. The mind,
the more active it is, the more productive it is.
Talking about his work on the most-talked about film of the recent times,
Rahman said: I kept three weeks aside. I moved to London and did the whole
score there.
David Novak, an ethnomusicologist at the Heyman Center for the Humanities at
Columbia University, said Rahman is sort of the Peter Gabriel of the Indian
film industry.

He shifted things from a simple East-West mode to a multicultural, global
mode, where India and its regional musics are part of a palette of sound from
around the world, Novak added.
Andrew Lloyd Weber, who worked with the composer for the West End musical
Bombay Dreams, said, I've long been impressed by his talent, and I'm so
pleased that Hollywood has recognized it.
But Rahman said he was yet to prepare his Oscar acceptance speech ready as he
was busy meeting various directors and record labels in Los Angeles.

[arr] India’s music genius hits the high notes

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/n/i/top_stories/2873/

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS) Allah Rakha Rahman, simply translated as God Save
Rahman. And that’s what India said Monday for the man who became the first
Indian to win two Oscars for his score in “Slumdog Millionaire” and for the
film’s theme song “Jai Ho”.
Rahman, credited with taking the Indian sound across the seas, has for long
comfortably straddled the worlds of not just classical and popular music, but
also Bollywood and Broadway.
A household name in India for his contribution to Bollywood, as well as cinema
from the south, he has been the cynosure of all ears since 1992 when he burst
on the Indian musical scene with his refreshingly different tunes for the Tamil
film “Roja”.
The film was subsequently made in Hindi, giving mainstream Hindi film music a
new meaning altogether: the rest, as they say, is history.
He has moved on from being a celebrated composer in India to a global music
supernova who has entered the record books as the first Indian to get a Golden
Globe, the first Indian to get the British Academy of Film and Television Arts
(BAFTA) award for music and the first Indian to bag a golden Oscar statuette.
With “Slumdog Millionaire”, Danny Boyle’s rags to riches drama based on a book
by Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup, the 41-year-old Rahman has stuck gold - and so
has India and Indian music.
The film, which had 10 Oscar nominations, including three for Rahman, won eight
Oscars. Two went to Rahman for best original score and best original song “Jai
Ho”, which he shared noted Indian lyricist Gulzar.
For India, the “Slumdog” awards story, which some say is as improbable as the
film itself about an 18-year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai who goes on to
win a staggering Rs.20 million ($410,000) on India’s “Who Wants To Be A
Millionaire?” game show, is not just about the BAFTAs and the Oscars.
It is also recognition of popular Indian cinema in the West that for long has
shunned Indian movies as too long and too full of song-and-dance sequences.
Rahman’s exuberant score has shattered all those perceptions, and shown that
the West likes the sound of India.
“All my life I had a choice between hate and love. I chose love and I am here,”
said Rahman after receiving his second golden statuette.
Composing music for British director Danny Boyle was a challenge, said the
self-effacing celebrity.
Boyle simply wanted a score with energy and an edge for his film. There was
also a twist. The perfectionist Rahman was given just three weeks to plan and
execute the score.
“It’s probably one-fifth of the time I normally take. For one thing, a normal
film has about 150 cues. But in this one there were only 17-18 cues for me.
Boyle uses music very little but very efficiently,” Rahman told us.
Like the film’s protagonist Jamal, Rahman’s is also an inspiring story of the
everyday struggle for survival that has ended on the glittering red carpets of
showbiz.
Born A.S. Dileep Kumar to a Tamil Hindu family, his father R.K. Shekhar, a
composer who directed music for Malayalam movies, died when he was just nine.
The family was forced to rent out musical equipment. Two years later, the
11-year-old budding maestro joined noted composer Ilayaraja’s troupe as a
keyboardist and computer programmer to support his mother and three sisters.
After working with several renowned composers like Zakir Hussain and L.
Shankar, he set out on his own to compose jingles and scores for popular Indian
television features and has composed more than 300 jingles.
During this period, he also earned a degree in western classical music from the
Trinity College of Music, London, and went on to set up his own in-house studio
at Chennai, said to be Asia’s most sophisticated and hi-tech studio.
In 1989, Dileep Kumar converted to Islam along with his family due to personal
reasons. He became A.R. Rahman.
The Bollywood debut came a couple of years later. And there was no looking back
after that.
The musical genius not only won hearts in India but also made a mark on the
global music scene.
He got his first international break when Andrew Lloyd Webber invited him to
compose music for the Broadway musical “Bombay Dreams”, which won him immense
fame.
He also composed for the stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord Of The
Rings” that premiered in Canada in 2006 and in London in 2007.
Apart from composing music Rahman is also involved in social work. He launched
the A.R. Rahman Foundation to tackle the issue of poverty by providing
education to the poor and equipping them with knowledge and skills to earn a
living.
As the awards pile up, Indians can only say a collective and joyous “Jai Ho”.

Los Angeles, Feb 24 (IANS) Six-time Grammy award-winning artist John Legend
joined double Oscar winning Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman to present a
picture of perfect harmony on stage as Mumbai-set 'Slumdog Millionaire' swept
the Oscars..
Both performers were joined in a multi-star cast of performers playing in a
medley of three Oscar-nominee songs - 'Jai Ho' and 'O Saya' from 'Slumdog
Millionaire', and 'Down to Earth' from 'WALL-E' - at the annual Academy Awards
ceremony at the Kodak Theatre here Sunday night.
The two artists got a chance to meet for the first time backstage and spent
quite a bit of time discussing music and future projects.
'It's great to see AR get the global recognition he deserves for not only
'Slumdog', but his body of work.. A lot of people don't know this, but AR's
music has been consumed by more people than almost any artist out there,'
stated Legend.
'I look forward to future opportunities like tonight.'
The Oscars presented a moment of serendipity for Legend, whose performance on
stage for WALL-E ended with a joint duet with AR fusing all nominee
performances together at the finale.

ARR is the first Indian to Win an Oscar in a Induvidual capacity in a
competitive section.

Satyajit ray won an Honoury award. Bhanu Athaiya share her award for Costume
design with an other person for Gandhi. Resul shares his award with two more.

ARR has won all alone for Best Score. So he becomes the first and only Indian
to have won an Oscar singularly in competitive section.

But, if you decide to be a little adventurous and peek inside the building,
you will find that the reception is anything but unpleasant. For, this is
where Beethoven’s Fur Elise mingles with Hindustani rag Bhupali, where cello

Welcome to KM
Musichttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articlelist/articleshow/4172121.cms#Conservatory,
AR Rahman’s cherished music college in the heart of Chennai,
which he hopes will give India possibly its first full-fledged symphony
orchestra. On Sunday, when the buzz was getting louder about Rahman’s three
Oscar nominations, the twenty-odd students and faculty at the institute sang
in chorus, “Hum Honge Kamyab” (We shall overcome).

The uplifting
songhttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articlelist/articleshow/4172121.cms#is
their precious chance to make Rahman proud. For, they will be
performing
this at a concert in honour of human rights advocate Martin Luther King III,
who is visiting Chennai this Wednesday. “It will be the first concert in
Rahman’s name, without Rahman’s performance,” said SR Kalesh, a student of
the institute’s foundation course.

Srinivas Krishnan, a percussionist and Rahman’s friend for a decade, said,
“Rahman’s busy attending the Oscar awards but he calls me up almost on a
daily basis to check how the preparation for the concert is proceeding. He
has been very keen on creating his own orchestra instead of sourcing
musicians from abroad.” His music school is a culmination of that dream.

“There has been a lot of hype around KM, since it was launched last year.
So, this will also be a chance to live up to live up to Rahman and the
academy’s image,” Kalesh said.

But amid songs that extol virtues such as civil rights and equality, the
students haven’t forgotten the Oscar fever in a hurry. “We can’t afford to
look very excited during the practice sessions, but Rahman’s Oscar
nominations is at the back of our minds. We are going to watch the ceremony
at his AM Studio, where he recorded the Jai Ho song,” Kalesh added.
Incidentally, Jai Ho is one of Rahman’s tracks nominated for the Oscars.

Confident of Rahman’s win, they have also gone ahead and bought crackers in
advance, for the celebrations. “We are confident that he will at least two
of three,” said another student Georgina. Meanwhile, faculty member Michael
Lindsay finds himself becoming more popular by the day with his friends back
home in the US, thanks to his Rahman connection. “It’s really cool that my
boss is Rahman,” he chuckles.

KM Music Conservatory, with people from different cities, states and
countries, mirrors Rahman’s vision. Close associates of Rahman say KM is
actually named after the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, whose shrine
in Ajmer attracts visitors from every community and society.

In a similar vein, he hopes the start up academy would become a symbol of
music amidst harmony. It currently has nearly 40 students in a full-time
foundation course and fifty others in a preparatory part-time programme. The
school is also planning to impart free violin lessons to children of a
corporation school nearby.

In an earlier interview to ET, Rahman had said, “My music school will be to
start an orchestra and raise awareness about orchestral music. In India,
every state is different so I thought we’d have one orchestra that says it
all. It is also a bridge for our culture, to export our culture. Music
transcends all, it’s a common language.”

[arr] Srinivas' hopes finally answered

2009-02-24 Thread Vithur
The countdown is over and Indian
musichttp://entertainment.oneindia.in/malayalam/top-stories/2009/a-r-rahman-srinivas-230209.html#maestro
A.R. Rahman has won two awards at the 81st Annual Academy
Awardshttp://entertainment.oneindia.in/malayalam/top-stories/2009/a-r-rahman-srinivas-230209.html#ceremony.
Srinivas, one of the several new
singershttp://entertainment.oneindia.in/malayalam/top-stories/2009/a-r-rahman-srinivas-230209.html#who
was discovered or rediscovered by Rahman had pinned his hopes on A.R.
Rahman and they are finally answered.

Srinivas had deeply hoped, A.R. Rahman has been nominated in two
categories: Best Original score and Best Original Song for *Slumdog
Millionaire*, directed by Danny Boyle, and I hope he wins both the awards.
Given the popularity of his work in *Slumdog Millionaire*, and the kind of
other major international film awards it has already won, I reckon Rahman
stands an excellent chance.”

Our classical musicians have, of course, made us proud, but Rahman is the
first Indian composer of popular music who has caught the imagination of
Western audiences. Rahman has done to Indian music what no musician has done
before: he has made the popular Indian music known at the international
level.

Talking about Rahman's brilliant composition 'Jai Ho' in *Slumdog
Millionaire*, which has become so popular that Pussycat Dolls, an American
all-girls pop group, has remixed it, Srinivas said: It’s a great song,
beautifully composed, and it is well sung too, by Sukhvinder, who has now
become world-famous, thanks to Rahman. The song has fetched Rahman the
Oscar for the best song.

[arr] Pakistani artistes pray for Rahman's win at Oscars ( Prayed and He won)

2009-02-24 Thread Vithur
*Pakistani artistes pray for Rahman's win at Oscars*

New Delhi (PTI): Renowned Pakistani singers Ghulam Ali and Farida Khanum
feel that music maestro A R Rahman deserves an Oscar for his music in
Slumdog Millionaire.

I pray from the depth of my heart that he wins Oscar. It will be a proud
and historic moment not only for India but the whole music fraternity,
Farida Khanum told PTI from Lahore.

Rahman is nominated for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for his
numbers Jai ho and O saya in the rags-to-riches dram about a Mumbai
slumdweller, which is also vying for Best Film and Best Director awards at
the Oscars.

The composer has already bagged a Golden Globe, BAFTA, Satellite Award, and
Los Angeles Film Critics Association award for his music in the film.

Rahman is rendering music from the age of 16. He understood Sur from a
different perspective and came up with unique style. God has been graceful
to him and you feel divinity in his Sufism oriented songs like Hazi Ali and
Khwaza mere Khawaza, the Ghazal singer said.

Khanum's all time favourite Rahman song is Dil hai chota sa from the film
Roja which marked his debut as a movie composer.

His melodies touch your heart. He has a huge fan base in Pakistan. I
strongly feel that art and artistes are above all boundaries, she added.

Expressing similar sentiments, Ghulam Ali said, He is amongst the most
talented musicians of this generation. He deserves the Oscar. Not only Oscar
but each and every award for his work.

Ali said he would love to sing for Rahman.

If I have a chance I would definitely love to sing for him. He has his own
style which is simple yet melodious. His vast range keeps him above of all,
said the maestro from Karachi. Rahman enjoys a huge fan following across the
border.

[arr] The Oscar statue stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8.5 pounds

2009-02-24 Thread Vithur
If all goes right for A R Rahman and Resul Pokutty, they might end up
lifting a 13.5-inch and 8.5 pound knight holding a crusader's sword and
standing on a reel of film on Academy night.

The Oscar statue stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8.5
pounds. The film reel features five spokes, signifying the five original
branches of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: actors,
directors, producers, technicians and writers.

Although the statuette remains true to its original design, the size of the
base varied until 1945, when the current standard was adopted.

Since the initial awards banquet on May 16, 1929, in the Hollywood Roosevelt
Hotel's Blossom Room, 2,701 statuettes have been presented.

Every year in January, additional new golden statuettes are cast, moulded,
polished and buffed by R S Owens Company, the Chicago-based awards
manufacturer retained by the Academy since 1982.

MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed a statuette of a knight standing on
a reel of film gripping a crusader's sword. The Academy tapped Los Angeles
sculptor George Stanley to realize the design in three dimensions and the
world-renowned statuette was born.

Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known
by its nickname, Oscar.

According to the Academy, the statuettes presented at the initial ceremonies
were gold-plated solid bronze. Within a few years the bronze was abandoned
in favour of Britannia metal, a pewter-like alloy which is then plated in
copper, nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold.

Due to a metal shortage during World War II, Oscars were made of painted
plaster for three years. Following the war, the Academy invited recipients
to redeem the plaster figures for gold-plated metal ones.

Achievements in up to 25 regular categories will be honoured on February 22
at the 81st Academy Awards presentation at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood
and Highland Center.

However, the Academy won't know how many statuettes it will hand out until
the envelopes are opened on Oscar Night.

Although the number of categories and special awards are known in advance,
the possibility of ties and of multiple recipients sharing the prize in some
categories makes it impossible to predict the exact number of statuettes to
be awarded.

As in previous years, any surplus awards will be housed in the Academy's
vault until next year's event.

[arr] Anchored by a fascinating score from Oscar winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) : LA Times Reviews Delhi 6

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-delhi24-2009feb24,0,6609938.story

Anchored by a fascinating score from Oscar winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog
Millionaire), naturalistic performances and a wide cinematic palette,
Delhi-6 is a fair introduction to Indian cinema for outsiders -- who will
have no clue at times why the audience is laughing.

American-born Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) takes his ailing grandmother back to
her old neighborhood in Delhi (the title refers to a postal code) and falls in
love with the city and its people -- in particular the gorgeous daughter (Sonam
Kapoor) of his grandmother's neighbors. Meanwhile, an apparent monster
terrorizes the town, stoking tensions between the Hindu and Muslim communities.

And those are just some of the movie's elements. Several stories go unresolved,
and perhaps the most interesting thread -- involving the still-present caste
system -- doesn't fully integrate into the film's tapestry. Still, the songs
and score are memorable, and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has a deep bag of
cinematic tricks to illuminate the distinct patterns, such as flights into
Hindu mythology or a dream sequence blending New York and Delhi.

For the uninitiated, watching Delhi-6 in a packed house can be surprising, as
when a wise old uncle who purchased his beloved's home after she left tells
Roshan: Tell her you love her -- or you'll end up buying empty houses like
me.

That got the biggest laugh of the night. Go figure.

[arr] I am a crazy fan of Rahman”: Trisha

*I am a crazy fan of Rahman”: Trisha* *By Moviebuzz* | Monday, 23
February , 2009, 18:16

Today is a red letter day in Trisha’s life as her biggest icon AR Rahman
has won two Oscars. Talking about Rahman, the actress is all smiles and
speaks from the location of her Telugu film in Hyderabad.

Trisha told *Sify.com*: “I am not just another fan, but a crazy fan of
Rahman. You won’t believe that sitting alone in my hotel room in Hyderabad,
I was watching the Oscars from early morning and I started screaming,
jumping and shouting when Rahman won the Oscar, that the hotel staff came
and told me that I had to bring down the TV volume as guests were sleeping
in adjecent rooms. It was truly embarrassing though I didn’t really care”.

Trisha has been a Rahman fan since school and confesses that it was partly
due to him that she entered films and when *Enakku 20 Unakku 18* offer came
her way, she blindly signed on the dotted line as Rahman was the music
director. She also had the privilege of working in Mani Ratnam’s *Ayitha
Ezhuthu *(*Yuva* in Hindi ) with Rahman’s music. And who can forget her
beach song *Hey Goodbye Nanba…* or that hot disco number *Yaakai Thiri…*.

And now her next film Gautham Menon’s *Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya* will have
music by AR Rahman and she is all excited about it. Gushes Trisha: “ I have
never been so emotional in my life and it was such an ecstatic moment when
Rahman won the Oscars. I don’t think that I’ll be so happy, even if
something like this happens in my life. I have made Gautham promise me that
he will give me a seat next to his for the audio launch of *Vinnaithandi
Varuvaaya*”

[arr] Let’s just rejoice for the nomination at the momen t.

2009-02-24 Thread Vithur
AR Rahman took over the Golden Globes and now he will sweep away all the
coveted titles at the Oscars.

“What can I say? It’s a dream come true not so much for me as my wife. She’d
wake up in the middle of the night and say, ‘I want you to win an Oscar’.
And I’d just smile. Today my wife’s dream seems a possibility,” Rahman said.

“But I don’t want to get too hopeful,” he quickly added. “Let’s just rejoice
for the nomination at the moment. I’m happy not just for myself but Gulzar
sahab who has been nominated for the lyrics of Jai ho. I wish Javed sahab
had got nominated too. If he had written a song in Slumdog Millionaire I’m
sure he too would’ve been nominated,” the music director said.

“My wife and children jumped with joy when they heard the announcement. And
my mother is also here with me. It’s all her prayers and support and her
upbringing that’s bearing fruit now,” he said.

You deserve every bit of this Rahman… Jai Ho!

AR Rahman - His music for ears for years

Subject: [arr] The Oscar statue stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at a
robust 8.5 pounds

If all goes right for A R Rahman and Resul Pokutty, they might end up lifting a
13.5-inch and 8.5 pound knight holding a crusader's sword and standing on a
reel of film on Academy night.

The Oscar statue stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs in at a robust 8.5 pounds.
The film reel features five spokes, signifying the five original branches of
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences: actors, directors, producers,
technicians and writers.

MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed a statuette of a knight standing on a
reel of film gripping a crusader's sword. The Academy tapped Los Angeles
sculptor George Stanley to realize the design in three dimensions  and the
world-renowned statuette was born.

Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by
its nickname, Oscar.

According to the Academy, the statuettes presented at the initial ceremonies
were gold-plated solid bronze. Within a few years the bronze was abandoned in
favour of Britannia metal, a pewter-like alloy which is then plated in copper,
nickel silver, and finally, 24-karat gold.

Due to a metal shortage during World War II, Oscars were made of painted
plaster for three years. Following the war, the Academy invited recipients to
redeem the plaster figures for gold-plated metal ones.

Achievements in up to 25 regular categories will be honoured on February 22 at
the 81st Academy Awards presentation at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood and
Highland Center.

However, the Academy won't know how many statuettes it will hand out until the
envelopes are opened on Oscar Night.

Although the number of categories and special awards are known in advance, the
possibility of ties and of multiple recipients sharing the prize in some
categories makes it impossible to predict the exact number of statuettes to be
awarded.

As in previous years, any surplus awards will be housed in the Academy's vault
until next year's event.

I don't know if he has seen *Slumdog Millionaire*. I know he wants to,
White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, told reporters during the course of his
daily press briefing.

Gibbs said Obama has watched several movies recently. I think that a lot of
the movies that he has seen recently are movies that might also entertain a

on that list, Gibbs said.

[arr] Oscar winners were predicted by guild awards

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://goldderby.latimes.com/awards_goldderby/2009/02/oscars-news-416.html

Slumdog Millionaire won eight Academy Awards. As is often the case at the
Oscars, these wins followed up on equivalent kudos from the respective guilds,
largely because the two sets of kudos share many of the same voters. But the
scale is hugely different. There are, for example, 1,240 members of the
academy's actors' branch, but more than 100,000 members of the Screen Actors
Guild. The academy contains 374 directors, but 13,000 helmers belong to the DGA
and most of them create TV shows, commercials and music videos instead of
feature films.
Slumdog Millionaire won with the Producers Guild of America and the cast won
with the Screen Actors Guild;
Helmer Danny Boyle won with the Directors Guild of America;
Script adapter Simon Beaufoy won with the Writers Guild of America;
Shooter Anthony Dod Mantle won with the American Society of Cinematographers;
Cutter Chris Dickens won with the American Cinema Editors;
Sound mixers Resul Pookutty, Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp won with the Cinema
Audio Society.
There is no music guild that bestows equivalent kudos, but Slumdog
Millionaire composer A.R. Rahman did win a raft of precursor awards for his
score including the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. That his composition Jai Ho
took best song was more of a surprise given that Down to Earth (Wall-E) won
both the Golden Globe and the Grammy.
Among the four Oscar acting champs, supporting actor winner Heath Ledger (The
Dark Knight) had taken almost every precursor prize leading up to last night.
Lead actor winner Sean Penn (Milk) won with the Screen Actors Guild, as well
as with the LA and Gotham critics and the Critics Choice. Penn lost the Golden
Globe, BAFTA and Independent Spirit awards to Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler).
Lead actress winner Kate Winslet (The Reader) won supporting actress with the
Screen Actors Guild as well as the Golden Globes before being bumped up to lead
actress and winning the BAFTA.
Supporting actress winner Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) won with
the L.A. and Gotham critics, the National Board of Review, BAFTA, and the
Independent Spirits.
Among the other Oscar winners, original scripter Dustin Lance Black (Milk)
won with the WGA; production designer Donald Graham Burt (The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button) won with the Art Directors Guild; costume designer Michael
O'Conner won with the Costumes Design Guild; and the special effects team of
Eric Barba, Steve Preeg, Burt Dalton and Craig Barron (Benjamin Button) won
with the Visual Effects Society.
David Watkin: cinematography winner, Out of Africa (1985)
James Whitmore: supporting actor nominee, Battleground (1949); lead actor
nominee, Give 'em Hell Harry (1975)
Richard Widmark: supporting actor nominee, Kiss of Death (1947)
Stan Winston: makeup and visual effects winner, Terminator 2 (1991); visual
effects winner, Jurassic Park (1993); makeup nominee, Heartbeeps (1982),
Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992); visual effects nominee,
Predator (1987), The Lost World (1997), A.I. (2001).

New York, Feb 23 : An Oscar award would be a 'great honour' and help
do 'bigger things', says Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, a hot
favourite to take home a trophy for his music in 'Slumdog
Millionaire'.
It would be a great honour, Rahman told the New York Times in a
telephone interview from Los Angeles, where he was preparing to
perform at the ceremony.
It would help me to do bigger things.
Asked to elaborate, Rahman named some Western directors he would
like to work with. Baz Luhrmann... Ridley Scott. I'm a big fan of
Ridley.
The Times notes Rahman is one of the most prolific and successful
film composers in India. He has three nominations for Danny Boyle's
Slumdog Millionaire - best original score and best original song,
for Jai Ho and O ... Saya, a collaboration with the Sri Lankan-
British rapper M.I.A.
Rahman, 43, has already won a Golden Globe for best score for
Slumdog Millionaire.
I like to see a film and then start scoring it in my mind, while
doing something unrelated, the maestro said. You just grasp a film
and start working, and something unpredictable comes out from a third
element. The mind, the more active it is, the more productive it is.
Talking about his work on the most-talked about film of the recent
times, Rahman said: I kept three weeks aside. I moved to London and
did the whole score there.
David Novak, an ethnomusicologist at the Heyman Center for the
Humanities at Columbia University, said Rahman is sort of the Peter
Gabriel of the Indian film industry.

He shifted things from a simple East-West mode to a multicultural,
global mode, where India and its regional musics are part of a palette
of sound from around the world, Novak added.
Andrew Lloyd Weber, who worked with the composer for the West End
musical Bombay Dreams, said, I've long been impressed by his
talent, and I'm so pleased that Hollywood has recognized it.
But Rahman said he was yet to prepare his Oscar acceptance speech
ready as he was busy meeting various directors and record labels in
Los Angeles.

[arr] Rehman has made the whole music fraternity feel pride on the achievement - Farid Sabri

2009-02-24 Thread Vithur
I have been watching the awards show on television and it is really a
fabulous achievement as Indian creativity has been recognised. It is not the
talking point whether the director is Indian or not, but the point is that
people who really made it happen by and large were Indians. It was shot in
India and its star cast was Indian. We should appreciate the effort that has
brought India into limelight.—Piyush Pandey, ad guru

An Indian lyricist and music director winning the Oscar is a very good thing
for the music industry of the country. With this, Indian cinema has made a
big impact on the world scene and is very good for Bollywood. Though it
shows India still in the slums, the story, performances and direction is
world class.—Rajiv Bhatt,musician

I am extremely happy and feel proud. Indian cinema has received recognition
on the international stage. The direction is fabulous and the movie is very
well made. The young artists have given beautiful performances and your
heart goes out to them. AR Rehman's music and Gulzar saab's lyrics have
created magic and have made the country proud.—Smita Bansal, actor

I have seen the film. It is technically brilliant. I am happy for AR Rehman
who is a genius. But it is not an Indian film. I would be happier the day
Indian producers and directors bring out our emotions through their movies.
The expressions and portrayal in the movie are much more intense than any
genre of film anywhere in the world. Extensive research is what we need to
learn from them. This is the only problem on the part of creative people who
conceive film ideas in India. It is the same Indian talent in this film, but
the approach of the producer and director is what has won that Oscar, that
extensive work on screenplays, content and presentation has made Slumdog
Millionaire win an Oscar.—Darshan Dave, actor

It is the rarest moment for the Indian film industry. AR Rehman deserves the
award. In fact, I feel that the award should have come much earlier to him.
After all, his creativity and talent has been recognised and awarded by the
world finally. The film, using India's slum background, has created history.
Winning eight Oscars is no mean feat. This achievement is also significant
for Jaipurites as one of the actor, Irrfan belongs to Jaipur.—Ravindra
Upadhyay,singer

I am so happy that the film finally got award and that too, eight awards.
The whole country was desperately waiting for this to happen. Rehman has
made the whole music fraternity feel pride on the achievement. I feel that
it is not the recognition of few people, but it is an achievement for the
whole country. It is a milestone for the Bollywood as well.—Farid
Sabri,singer

It is a great honour for the nation and the film fraternity. AR Rehman has
set the trend for other Indian musicians to follow. This is a wonderful
achievement for the Indian film industry and I hope every year we'll keep
bringing more Oscars to the country. Proud to be an Indian! —Rajiv

KANPUR: Jai Ho! was what the Kanpurites were humming on Monday morning
after Slumdog Millionaire bagged 8 Oscar Awards with the maestro AR

two Oscars. The excitement among every Indian with Kanpurites no exception
to it, was all apparent and obvious, as majority of them kept glued to their
TV screens right from the morning.

For superintendent in-chief of LLR, Dr Naresh Yadav it was a super-good
feeling after AR Rehman won two Oscars. The magnitude of his joy could be
gauged from the fact that Dr Yadav had been wishing `Jai Ho' instead of
greeting `hello/ hi' to whomsoever who called him.

Finally, Oscars are making a come back and what a come back-- with 9 Oscars
it is already a big achievement, said Dr Yadav, who feels that both the
movies have set benchmarks for the Bollywood industry and this would bring
positivity among the ones working in every field. Winning Oscar Awards
would surely change the thinking of every individual, said he.

Meanwhile, Dr Anupam Shukla, HoD of English department, DAV College too felt

However, he also feared that as winning Beauty Pageants in a series opened a

Meanwhile, the elated city folks expressed their joy and happiness by

[arr] After Slumdog, another dream for Rahman

After Slumdog, another dream for Rahman

Inspired by the rags-to-riches story of Slumdog Millionaire, Academy Award
winner A R Rahman has decided to provide that magical element that made the
slumdog a millionaire: opportunity.

At the K M Music Conservatory, the classical music school started by Rahman,
a set of 24 violins are waiting for students chosen from the Government-run
MGR School next door. The only criterion is aptitude. This is just the
beginning for the school that has arguably one of the best Western music
training faculties and facilities. The dream is to train them well enough
to play a symphony. It is not an overnight project, Jyoti said.

Slumdog Millionaire seems to leave a positive effect on everybody including
Rahman, who is now planning to reach out to the poor students who have
interest in music. After all, he is a humble Sufi at heart, Jyoti Nair
Belliappa, the administrative officer of the school told The Indian Express.

Started by Rahman last March, K M Music Conservatory is a one of its kind
school that teaches Indian and Western music in their purest, classical
form. Classes are conducted by world-renowned professors while Rahman
himself drops in whenever he can. While it is Rehman's genius that has
attracted students from faraway places, it is his humility and dedication
that has impressed these youngsters after their interaction with him here.

[arr] A recession-era Oscar telecast is full of feel-good moments

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
[* Highlighted the part of the article which is relevent to AR.]

http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-ap-oscars,0,2718232.story

Maybe it was the adorable smile on that Slumdog Millionaire kid in his
pint-sized tuxedo.

Or best director winner Danny Boyle bouncing in silly tribute to Tigger of
Winnie the Pooh.

The grinning, top-hatted dad of best actress winner Kate Winslet, whistling
like a champion to get his daughter's attention.

Or an entire crowd standing together in remembrance of Heath Ledger.

This year's Oscar telecast was striking for its many feel-good themes and
moments — and perhaps exactly what we needed from a recession-era awards show.

Certainly, it was a notable contrast to last year, when darkness and cynicism
ruled the nominated films, capped by best picture winner No Country for Old
Men, about a homicidal sociopath. The collective subject matter was so bleak
that host Jon Stewart was inspired to say of Juno, the one comedy: Thank
goodness for teen pregnancy!

This year's host, Hugh Jackman, had no such trouble. He presided over a show
filled with Cinderella themes both fictional and real-life. And none was more
poignant than that of the night's big winner, Slumdog Millionaire, with its
story of love triumphing over desperate poverty, criminality and pure evil.

Lost on no one at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, of course, was the Cinderella-like
story of the movie itself, which nearly became a victim of the tanking economy
and was headed for a direct-to-DVD release before News Corp.'s Fox Searchlight
stepped in to distribute it.

And there were the many personal stories of those involved in the film. As the
cast stood onstage after winning the best picture award, the cameras focused
briefly on a beatifically smiling Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, one of the
children who'd been whisked to the Oscars from a desperately poor neighborhood
on the outskirts of Mumbai, where he lives in a lean-to made of plastic
tarpaulins and blankets. One can only imagine how the moment must have felt for
his friends and family back home.

It fell to Simon Beaufoy, who won for the film's adapted screenplay, to make
the link between our troubled times and the film's appeal.

It's come out at a time when the value of money, which has been raised to this
extraordinary height, is suddenly being shown to be a kind of very shallow
thing, Beaufoy said. The financial markets are crashing around the world, and
a film comes out which is ostensibly about being a millionaire. Actually ...
it's a film that says there's more important things than money: love, faith and
family.

It was a different family — that of the late Heath Ledger — that brought tears
to many eyes in the most emotional moment of the ceremony, no less affecting
because it was expected: Ledger's posthumous Oscar for his diabolical Joker in
The Dark Knight.

The entire theater rose along with Ledger's relatives to pay tribute to this
deeply talented actor who died last year at age 28, of an accidental
prescription drug overdose. They heard his father express how much Ledger would
have wanted to be there.

This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to
be truly accepted by all you here tonight, his peers within an industry he so
loved, said Kim Ledger, Heath Ledger's father.

The moment was lacking only one thing: A look back at Ledger's stunning work as
the Joker. The new format for the acting awards, with five former winners
paying tribute to nominees in short speeches, may have added some touching
moments — Shirley MacLaine telling Anne Hathaway that she had a great future
was one of them — but it took away the film clips, an omission some found
glaring.

You've got all these wonderful images — so let's see this stuff on screen!
said Jonathan Kuntz, a historian at UCLA's film school. They could have done a
better job selling their films by actually showing them. Not everyone has seen
these movies.

The ratings support that view — bigger and more mainstream movies always draw
higher Oscar ratings, and though viewership was up by more than 4 million this
year, at 36.3 million, there are still only two Oscar telecasts on record with
fewer viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Last year, when No Country For Old Men won best picture, the telecast was
seen by 32 million people, the lowest on record. The 2003 telecast, with
Chicago as the best picture winner, was seen by 33 million.

But back to the sweet moments, which came in some unexpected places. Certainly
there was no Cinderella story in The Reader, the tale of an unrepentant Nazi
guard played by Kate Winslet.

But Winslet's win was touching nonetheless — the popular British actress had
been nominated five times previously with no success.

Thanking her parents for their faith in her, she called out, Dad, whistle or
something 'cause then I'll know where you are. And Roger Winslet whistled back

shy, nervous Dilip Kumar who never spoke, the boy who never looked up, the
boy who used to turn out the lights before he sang in front of anyone, had
morphed into an international star.

He always knew he wanted to be famous. He dreamt — and told his friends too
— that he wanted his music
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Raja-of-Roja-becomes-OscAR-Rahman/articleshow/4179838.cms#to
be played all over the world. But it was a dream that took a long time to
realize. As a young boy of 11, Rahman, then known as Dilip Kumar, saw his
father R K Sekhar, a music arranger and composer, die of cancer. He didn't
have time to mourn though, he had to pick up from where his father had left
off and earn for the family of five. While his three sisters focused on
academicshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Raja-of-Roja-becomes-OscAR-Rahman/articleshow/4179838.cms#,
the young Dilip never managed to give books enough time. In the words of his
teachers in Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, the school he went to until the
ninth grade, ``He managed to scrape through.''

The young ARR spent all his time after
schoolhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Raja-of-Roja-becomes-OscAR-Rahman/articleshow/4179838.cms#at
the recording studio, playing keyboards for composers (having got the
first set of job offers thanks to the goodwill of his father). There were
days when his mother would be seen waiting for him outside school in the
morning, uniform and breakfast in hand, according to his teachers. A studio
van would drop off the tired Dilip who would be fed and changed by his
mother before being rushed to school. The only reason the school remembers
him is that during all the school programmes they needed him to play the
keyboard — he was the best in school. He would also be called out of the
classroom whenever there was a recording because his family simply could not
afford to say no.

ARR had finally to drop out of Padma Seshadri in the ninth grade, and then
out of school altogether, midway through class XI because he could not cope
with both his
studieshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Raja-of-Roja-becomes-OscAR-Rahman/articleshow/4179838.cms#and
work. ``When I was a teenager, I was spending most of my time with
50-year-olds and 60-year-olds. They were very sweet people, yes. I felt I
was one among them, it took a while to realise that I was actually much
younger,'' says Rahman about his early life as a musician in the film
industryhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Raja-of-Roja-becomes-OscAR-Rahman/articleshow/4179838.cms#when
he played his keyboard for bigwigs of the Tamil industry such as
Ilayaraja.

``What I learnt from them were values and ethics. And then there were things
I learned not to do...I learned not to become complacent,'' he adds. ``And
to look beyond what you are forbidden to look beyond.''

A lot has changed in A R Rahman's life over the years in terms of his
personality as well as his music, but the two most important aspects of his
life remain constant — God and his mother. He doesn't just say it every time
he is on stage because it seems like the right thing to say. He truly
believes that the first is the driving force in his life, the reason he is
who he is. The second, quite simply, is the reason he is where he is.

[arr] 'Slumdog' composer Rahman's 2 victories equal previous number of Indian Oscar wins

2009-02-24 Thread Prakash Balaramkrishna
http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/sns-ap-oscars-original-song,0,445493.story

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In just one night, Indian film composer A.R. Rahman equaled
the number of Oscars his fellow Indians had taken home during the first 80
years of the Academy Awards.

The 43-year-old composer, hailed in India as the Mozart of Madras, won Oscars
Sunday for best original soundtrack and best original song, both from the movie
Slumdog Millionaire.

Other Indians to collect Oscar gold before him were costume designer Bhanu
Athaiya, honored for Gandhi in 1982, and arthouse director Satyajit Ray, who
received a lifetime achievement award in 1992.

I was excited and terrified, the soft-spoken Rahman said as he collected his
first Oscar, for best original soundtrack. The last time I felt like that was
during my marriage.

Rahman competed against himself in the best song category with two nominations,
for O ... Saya and Jai Ho. He won for the latter, the title of which
translates in English to Be Victorious.

Rahman is no stranger to success in India. His fans there and elsewhere have
made him one of the world's best-selling recording artists, on par globally
with the Rolling Stones and Madonna.

He believes music and film can bring people together despite boundaries of
race, nationality and religion.

All my life, I had a choice of hate and love. I chose love, and I'm here, he
said as he collected his second Oscar.

Long an advocate of the universality of music, Rahman has called on people to
be open to all styles, from heavy metal to jazz to hip-hop to RB.

Danny Boyle, who won the best director Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire, said
that he attempted to give Rahman the leeway he needed to pursue various musical
forms in scoring the movie.

I'm really happy and grateful it worked out, Rahman said.

*Tamil everywhere, even at Oscars*
Prasanna Singh [February 23, 2009, 10:31:18 AM]

For the first time in the history of Oscars, someone spoke in Tamil while
delivering the acceptance speech. A.R. Rahman, while delivering his
acceptance speech uttered “Ella pugazhum Iraivanukke,” which became the
first Tamil words spoken at Oscars!

It was a proud moment for all Tamils; a moment that took all Tamils closer
to their goal “engum Tamizh, edhilum Tamizh” (Tamil everywhere).

Even A.R. Rahman, who is cool and composed all the time, could not help
yielding to the magnificence of Oscars. Though the music director tried
being calm, there was a faint quiver in his voice. Restraining all his
emotions on winning Cinema’s most coveted award, A.R. Rahman humbly accepted
his Oscars as a gift from God. He is truly a perfect example of humility.
And at the backstage, he confided that he was very nervous while climbing
the stairs to receive his Oscars.

Wait! There is another announcement on TV! *Slumdog Millionaire* wins the
best film award as we type this news!

Congratulations *Slumdog Millionaire* team and thank you A.R. Rahman for
putting Tamil and Chennai on the pedestal.

New York, Feb 23 : An Oscar award would be a 'great honour' and help
do 'bigger things', says Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, a hot
favourite to take home a trophy for his music in 'Slumdog
Millionaire' .
Rahman, 43, has already won a Golden Globe for best score for
Slumdog Millionaire .

AR Rahman

And we all know why. It is the Rahman effect, as the
musichttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/Rahmans-Tolly-Days/articleshow/4169598.cms#maestro
got nominated for more than one category for the Oscars. And like
everybody else, Telugu director Koti too sent up a prayer as he not just
hoped but believed that Rahman deserves the honour. What gives him this
conviction one wonders. For those who don't know, Rahman's meteoric rise had
humble beginnings in Tollywood -- he started his music career working as a
keyboard player with Tollywood's music director, Koti!

He was very young, about 17 years old at that time, remembers Koti and
says he joined him in 1985. At that time, there was not much computer
technology available to music directors. But Dileep (his first name then,
later changed to AR
Rahmanhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/Rahmans-Tolly-Days/articleshow/4169598.cms#)
always showed interest in the new technology and was keen to study it. He
worked with me relentlessly all day and night, till as late as 10pm. And
after that he'd work the night through with the instruments until the early
hours of the morning, Koti remembers.

After working with maestro Ilayaraja for many years, Rahman joined Koti. At
that time his remuneration was just Rs 600. He was a hard worker and always
thinking about music. When he started his small studio Panchathan Record Inn
he invited me to his studio. Back then he used to compose music jingles for
advertisements, TV
channelshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/Rahmans-Tolly-Days/articleshow/4169598.cms#and
documentaries, recalls Koti.

Koti says that apart from his hard work, Rahman has reached the top because
of his mother's unstinting support. She has given everything to Rahman. I
still remember that she sold her gold ornaments and got into deep debt to
get the latest musical
instrumentshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/Rahmans-Tolly-Days/articleshow/4169598.cms#which
at that time had to be bought from Singapore. But Rahman too worked
with dedication and discipline and spared no efforts, said Koti. He adds
that Rahman never worked to impress the director or producer he just
composed quality music with the story in mind.

Rahman always looks for innovation in music. At that time our Telugu
directors and producers couldn't fathom the music we were doing. Their
interest was in the commercial formula scores. That maybe one reason why
Rahman didn't get to do many Telugu
filmshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/Rahmans-Tolly-Days/articleshow/4169598.cms#,
opines Koti. This did disappoint and upset Rahman, said Koti. And then, he
recalls, it was a song in Nagarjuna's film Iddaru Iddare recorded at
Rahman's studio that broke the jinx and the
songhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/Rahmans-Tolly-Days/articleshow/4169598.cms#became
a huge hit. And then, he did the entire re-recording for the film
Nalla Trachu and people began to notice his talent.

Koti thinks that Rahman is a gifted player. Luckily Rahman got to work with
many creative directors and producers. Once he made a mark with 'Roja' he
never looked back. But I still see him as Dileep, the little boy who worked
with me, Koti remembers nostalgically. “Today I am confident he will get
the Oscar. But even if he doesn’t it won’t matter--- Rahman is a great
musician,”he adds.

And on a closing note what does Rahman have to say about Koti? Well, as long
drawn struggles gave way to success and Rahman came into his own, Koti
recalls that at an audio function in the city last year, as chief guest
Rahman said , Initially, some of the directors with whom I had worked
couldn't understand my tunes. It was Koti, who recognized the talent in me.
I will never forget my association with Koti.
