I Am Happy For Rahman: Harris Jayaraj

Harris Jayaraj has composed some of the best melodies and has apprenticed under
AR Rahman for awhile starting with 'Ratchagan'. He is happy for his mentor and
him winning the Oscars.

Harris speaks about his association with Rahman and how he is so liberal when
it comes to music giving him enough space to learn and improvise himself.

Watch the videos of Harris Jayaraj felicitating AR Rahman.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Slumdog Millionaire, the rags-to-riches movie that
took the Oscars by storm, also produced two of the most influential words of
the 2008 Hollywood awards season, a language monitoring group said on
Thursday.

Jai Ho!, Hindi for Let There be Victory and the title of the movie's
Oscar-winning best song, and Slumdog -- the controversial term coined by
the filmmakers for young slum-dwellers in Mumbai -- were named the top
HollyWords of the year that closed with last Sunday's Oscars.

The Global Language Monitor, which uses an algorithm to track the frequency
of words and phrases in the world's print and electronic media, said it was
rare for two words from the same movie to be ranked in its annual list.

Slumdog Millionaire crowned its awards sweep by winning eight Oscars, also
including best picture and director.

Last summer's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull inspired
the new expression Nuke the Fridge -- a phrase coined on the Internet to
describe a moment when a cinematic franchise has run its course.

The phrase came in third on the list, followed by Hmong -- a mountain
dwelling people in Laos -- from the Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino.

What doesn't kill you makes youstranger, the Joker's twist on German
philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's epigram that was spoken by Heath Ledger in
Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight was also among the Top Ten. along with
the line There are no coincidences from the animated movie Kung Fu
Panda.

[arr] ARR told We are back in form in HT interview

2009-02-27 Thread Sriram S
Yesterday night (at around 11 PM  IST) in Headlines today, ARR was in a LIVE
telephonic interview with the Anchor and other Fans.

When the anchor asked ARR about when can we expect another album like
Sangamam, AR replied that there are no film makers taking that kind of a film
and also told Myself, Vairamuthu are teaming up for Maniratnam's next film
(i.e. Raavan) and we are back in form.

I think we can expect some classical numbers in Raavan. This is exciting
again.

2009-02-27 Thread Leslie D
I dont think this list makes much sense these days as lots of people are
downloading the music from various sources like iTunes and Amazon music
store. The sales of physical media has dropped considerably. Gone are the
days when a successful album used to sell few millions copies. Rahman would
have got the first 100 million in 10 years but if the current trend
continues the next 100 million will take 50 years. Success these days can
not be measured in terms of sales anymore.

Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman, above-left, will try to scale the U.S. pop
 charts

A.R. Rahman triumphed at the Oscars Sunday night. Now one of America's
biggest record labels is hoping the Indian film composer can conquer the
U.S. pop-music charts, thanks to an unlikely collaboration with the lead
singer of the pop group the Pussycat Dolls.

The morning after Mr. Rahman's twin victories for best song and best score
for the film Slumdog Millionaire, Universal Music Group's Interscope
Geffen AM Records released an English-language pop version of his
prize-winning song Jai Ho. (The title means, approximately, Be
 Victorious in Hindi.)

Listen to a clip from the remixed version of Jai Ho:

The new version of the song adds to Mr. Rahman's original music and vocals
a rough English translation of the Hindi lyrics, sung by Nicole Scherzinger
of the Pussycat Dolls. You are the reason that I breathe, she sings in the
song's chorus. You are the reason that I still believe / You are my
 destiny.

The remix, titled Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny), was produced by Ron Fair,
the chairman of Interscope's Geffen Records division, and a pop producer and
songwriter who has created hits for the Dolls, Christina Aguilera and
 others.

The producers were aiming to have the new song ready for release
immediately after the Oscars whether or not the original won. The remix was
created over about a month, from mid-January until last week, with
contributions from three continents. Mr. Fair and a team of songwriters
worked in Los Angeles, with input from Mr. Rahman, via Skype, in Chennai,
India. On a concert tour with her group, Ms. Scherzinger recorded her vocal
parts at studios in various cities around England.

[arr] AR Rahman - Oscar Websites Page

2009-02-27 Thread Anantha Dreamer
Hi,
With the flurry of websites reporting about our boss, it is hardly
unimaginable for me for tracking all these...

I have created a page for listing some (which i have entered manually). The
links are already being circulated here in this group, so you must have read
already...

http://tinyurl.com/arr-oscar-page

You can also add new links through the interface provided by google docs...
Hope what I have done for myself, will be helpful for anyone who is keeping
track of these articles...

Request you to add links here so that we can have a near-complete list in a
single page...

The entries made here will be automatically visible in the first page
(thanks to google docs)

Music is my means of connecting with the divine.

 *Source: Indiatimes Spirituality
Column by Rahman (as told toAtul Sethi)

Music is my means of connecting with the divine. What cannot be put
into
words, can be expressed through music. When one listens to music,
one closes
one's eyes because music is an expression and celebration of the
divine.

There are countless names of God, which we cannot utter
simultaneously, but
through a soulful composition, we can experience the whole power of
God's
 presence amidst us.

When I was composing for my first film Roja, I often went into a
spiritual
vacuum where nothing else mattered except the music. At those times,
I felt
connected with a supreme power. That is why I credit whatever
success has
come my way to the Almighty. I feel that the power and grace of the
divine
is infinite - it is we human beings who create boundaries and try to
limit
 this power.

For artists, I believe that this manifests itself in the form of
inspiration
which helps you create something wonderful. I often work through the
night
because that is when I feel closest to the divine.

The divine power works in a mysterious way to offer you experiences,
which
enrich and make you a better person. As a composer, I have often
felt that
life's experiences - both good and bad - have greatly added to my
 compositions.

My belief in Sufism has helped me emerge as a stronger person and
has given
me the equanimity to view life objectively. Often, when I visit a
dargah, I
feel a sense of peace enveloping me. I also believe in the power of
prayer.
I had an occasion to experience it for myself, when my daughter was
diagnosed with a hole in her heart when she was born.

However, by the time she was two, the hole vanished without any
operation.
It was considered nothing short of a miracle. I believe it happened
because
of the power of prayer. If one is sincere, no prayer goes
unanswered.

[arr] AR Rahman = Talented + Innovative + Dedicated + Humane

2009-02-27 Thread Leslie D
AR Rahman - Talented + Innovative + Dedicated +
Humanehttp://crazyscribbling.blogspot.com/2009/02/ar-rahman-talented-innovative-dedicated.html
AR Rahman has achieved what no other music composer from India has ever
achieved. 2 Oscar awards. He will be known as multiple Oscar award winner.
Not many people in the entertainment industry have been able to achieve this
feat.
Having started his career in music by playing for other musicians, he has
now achieved what others can only dream about. He has done all this because
of some very good and extremely rare qualities that he has.

Talented - He is supremely talented. People were blown away when they first
listened to Roja. It was unlike anything they had heard before. 18 years
down the lane, Delhi 6 evokes the same response. He comes from South
Indian background but was quick to learn the nuances of Hindustani and
excelled in genres like Qawalli and Tumri. His music for films was anything
but filmi. So much variety. One could easily see the effort that he has
taken to sound different from his previous works and his peers.

Innovative - His arrival on the music scene was easily noticed by one and
all because he was different from others. His sounds were different and the
quality was exceptional. Whenever he sees a new instrument he tries it out
and uses it as and when he can. Flutist Naveen was telling a very touching
story about Rahman bringing him new instruments from across the world. Hindi
film music was so monotonous before he broke into the scene. 40 piece
orchestra would always sound the same. He changed all that with his
innovative use of instruments and voices. Some classical Indian instruments
which people had virtually forgotten were introduced back into mainstream
music and was appreciated by the common people.

Dedication - This is probably THE REASON why he is so successful. His
dedication to his work is unparalleled. He selects very few projects and
gives his everything into them. At times he says yes to some lousy projects
and he realizes that very soon. But that doesnt mean that he wont give his
100% to such projects. Enn Swaasa Katre, Ratchagan, Meenaxi, Ada to
name a few. Even if all the things about the movie goes wrong, he makes sure
that it is good as far as music is concerned. The story about making Danny
Boyle wait for 4 hrs because Rahman was in a recording session doesnt show
his arrogance but shows how dedicated he is towards his work. No cell phones
or any other kinds of distrubance. Utmost dedication. Good work always
succeeds and Rahman is a living example of the same.

Humane - Rahman has in his small ways always done his bit for the community
and country as a whole. Maa Tujhe Salaam, Vande Mataram, Taj Mahal
Album, Tsunami relief concert, KM Music conservatory etc are some of
them. He is very spiritualistic but never preaches his religion. Having his
feat strongly on the ground after so much success is no mean thing but for
Rahman it is not a difficult task.

To be titled as Dr. A.R. Rahman IndiaGlitz
[Friday, February 27, 2009]
Musical Maestro A.R. Rahman has haunted the entire globe with his
trenchant scores. As Vairamuthu said, `Rahman has opened the doors
for Indian Cinema to proceed ahead', it's the right time for
Rahman to be honored as `Doctor'.

Yup! We're gleefully excited to hear that Aligarh Muslim University
of Uttar Pradesh would confer the title of `Doctrine' for A.R.
Rahman for his stupendous achievement in Indian Cinema. On April 25,
A.R. Rahman would be felicitated along with Rathan Tata for his
`NANO' Car-project and `Father of Green Revolution' M.S.
Swaminathan.

Yeah true, my bad! But of all the songs sukhi has sung, the ones with
AR has always been in the spotlight. Rahman has had a BIG role in
where Sukhi is today. Right from the first song, 'Chaiyaa Chaiyaa' to

To see you holding those two Oscars was a wonderful historic moment.
It was, wasn't it?

Earlier we missed it. Each time I would see those disappointed Indian
faces after the Oscars, I wished that someone would go and get it for
us. This time we cracked it. Resul Pookutty and I getting the Oscar
have brought India into the centre of the popular culture. That's a
big high for me. I only wish Gulzar saab and Sukhwinder were there to
share the moment with me.

• Why weren't they there?
I wanted Gulzar saab to be there. The producers had sent him a
ticket, but he hurt his shoulder and had to cancel the ticket. Anyway
they called out Gulzar saab's name on stage. I felt good about that.

[arr] Re: After D6 and the Oscars, are there still doubters in this group?

2009-02-27 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
I remember a few years ago when there were quite a few folks in here
saying how they thought Rahman has lost it or is losing steam or is
not living up to his standards, or blah blah blah.

i was one of them, i thought that he is not living up to his
standards. though i NEVER thought he is losing it. and now after
Delhi 6 and SDM all those complains are completely gone. especially
with Delhi 6 as it is really one albums which very much lived to his
standards (though i still look forward to see something like Dil Se to
come up and i am sure it will), one of his bests. and with SDM, he
revived us with some of his old style i always missed (Liquid dance)
as well as the absolutely awesome, exotic and international Mausam
escape and O saya. add Latika's theme and Jai ho and it was true
ARR in SDM.

Rahman has never lost it and never will. He may go through ups and
downs in his career, but never will he lose his creative magic,
simply because he is so in touch with divinity.

very true. inshallah.

If ARR has not introduced Sukhi some other music director would have
done that same way if sukhi has not sung JAI HO some other
singer would have sung that..even ARR could have.. who knows..

The Song won the award because of the tune,music... not because of
Sukhi or Gulzar...i don't think academy members know hindi to
understand the Lyrics..

So the credit for JAI HO's win should go to ARR only... Gulzar won
because he was part of it.. if any other lyricsist would have
written the song they would be the winner now..

just my thaught.. not offending Sukhi or gulzar..

2009-02-27 Thread Vithur
I feel that Kamal is a person who talks plain without hiding any of his
feelings or thoughts. He is one of the most hardworking, talented Actor, and
he rightly deserves an Oscar.

He may sound egoistic , but where there is talent there is bound to be ego (
THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS OUR ARR)
AR himself had said in many interviews that Kamalhassan is very talented. He
can sing, act, dance, write lyrics , direct , do screen play. He is
undoubetdly multi talented.

May be in a corner of his heart, he is having the pain that he is unable to
get nominated for the Oscars and win it. But time will surely answer his
efforts also.

 theme)..

What about background score? If you include BGM also then my list
 would be..

 1.Bose The Forgotten Hero
 2.Warriors Of Heaven And Earth
 3.Swades
 4.Lagaan
 5.Bombay
 6.Rang De Basanti
 7.Kannathil Muthamittal

The top 10 greatest AR Rahman film soundtracks
   Sidin Vadukut - Wednesday, February 25, 2009 10:34 AM
Don't take our word for it.
It's what you, the readers of this blog, told us after
enthusiastically participating in the poll mentioned in the last
post. Many of you left comments and dozens of you polled. At the
final count, we had exactly 200 votes when we decided to analyze
results at around 10:30 AM this morning. We had asked you to
 choose
from five films of our choosing (Rang De Basanti, Roja, Pudhiya
Mugam, Delhi 6 and Lagaan) plus Slumdog Millionaire and let you
 add
films of your own choosing. And you committed music fans added
plenty: we had atleast one vote for a total of 25 films. (Opinions
made in the comments section have not been taken into account. Not
because we don't like your comments, we crave comments, but
 because
we could be double counting people who commented and polled.)
Here in reverse order of votes won are the top 10 most popular
 ARR
film soundtracks according to PlayThings readers:
   Number 10: Thiruda Thiruda

A ARR-Mani Ratnam project from 1993 that did not do too well at
 the
box office but won plenty of fans for its music. Every track was a
hit including Veerapandi Kottayile, Konjam Nilavu and Rasathi.
 Little
known fact about Thiruda Thiruda: the writing credits for this
 movie
goes to a then little known writer and film maker Ram Gopal Varma.
 He
went on to later make Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag and make me want to
bludgeon myself to death with a remote control.

   Number 9: Iruvar

Again a ARR-MR project, Iruvar was a controversial lightly
 veiled
biopic of Tamil politician, film star and god-on-earth MG
Ramachandran. No one will forget the Hello Mister song in the
 movie
not just for the music itself but for the unveiling of a young,
 sexy
Aishwarya Rai in her debut film. Cue goosebumps. And then some.
 (Also
  Mohanlal! Yay!)

   Number 8: Alaipayuthe

Yes, this ARR-MR collaboration business is beginning to bore no?
But whatay soundtrack this is. And the rare movie that matches
Rahman's music with stunning visuals. One of my fave tracks from
 the
album, Endendrum Punnagai, was originally not part of the album.
 (And
if I remember right, was missing from the first batch of CDs and
tapes.) But it was very popular and they brought it back into the
  official OST.
   Number 7: Pudhiya Mugam

Collective high five everyone. I won't repeat everything I said
before, but if you haven't had a chance to listen to music you
 really
must. And try to ignore the damp squib Vishwavidaata remix.
   Number 6: Delhi-6

For a while I was worried about Delhi-6. After the first 100
 votes
or so, there wasn't even one vote for this recent masterpiece.
Thankfully it picked up steam later. A wonderfully varied and
 nuanced
track if you ask me. That and Dev D will take time to be replaced
 in
  our iPods.
   Number 5: Bombay

No surprises here. A critical and popular success in every
language. Wikipedia adds these bits of trivia:
The track Bombay Theme from the soundtrack is an instrumental
orchestral piece composed, arranged and conducted by A. R. Rahman.
 It
was recently featured in the soundtrack and score of the Nicolas
 Cage
film Lord of War, released in 2005. It has appeared on several
  compillation CDs since the film's

When it comes to movies Kamal's dedication cannot be matched by any of his

2009-02-27 Thread V S Rawat
I think Sukhi felt hurt so much by not being able to attend the ceremony
that he got slightly disoriented.

I am not saying it in negative sense.

There had been talks from day one of nomination that sukhwinder and gang
performing the song at the ceremony. There had been statements of sukhi
and other how much enthused they all were, how much preparation they
must have done - and the damn visa or letter doesn't appear. Anyone
would be disappointed - so much disappointed that he becomes incoherent.
So he spoke contradictory things or didn't realize that what he is
speaking might mean what.

Let's hope that all gets sorted out soon. Sukhi and our man have a long
and fruitful association, I think 10 year old now. They have lot of love
and respect for each other. Hope this sustains and they continue giving
us lovely pieces in tandem.

Sukhi is a composer himself. I would pray that he also gets an oscar
soon for his own composition.

If Indian lyricists like Gulzar and Sahir had not got Oscar, it was a

CHENNAI: While speculation is strife about the benefit that A R Rahman’s
win in the Oscars is likely to bring to Indian entertainment and sound
 industries,
the music icon who has grown larger than life into a maestro, has landed
himself 3 offers from
Hollywoodhttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News-By-Industry/Media--Entertainment-/Entertainment/Post-Oscar-Rahman-lands-3-Hollywood-offers/rssarticleshow/4199421.cms#.

“Yeah, I have received 2-3 offers,” he said in his trademark matter-of-fact
tone, albeit with an added touch of euphoria. “Due to the confidentiality in
the agreements, I cannot talk about them any further,” he said. He was
addressing the media in Chennai on Thursday in a mood of jubiliance, having
slept barely seven hours after his arrival from Los Angeles at 3.

The air in the hall cackled with almost as much energy as his Oscar winning
songhttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News-By-Industry/Media--Entertainment-/Entertainment/Post-Oscar-Rahman-lands-3-Hollywood-offers/rssarticleshow/4199421.cms#releases.
“Jai Ho! Embodies the release of an extra-ordinary energy,” he
said. “The music enhanced the film, like the jewel on a beautiful ornament.
And it, somehow, also appealed to a western sensibility.”

The musician, who did Tamil proud by addressing a few words in his mother
tongue to the audience at the Kodak theatre on Sunday, admitted that despite
having forayed into different styles of
musichttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News-By-Industry/Media--Entertainment-/Entertainment/Post-Oscar-Rahman-lands-3-Hollywood-offers/rssarticleshow/4199421.cms#,
composing for Tamil songs, having grown up with the language. But, that
didn’t stop him from taking wild risks at the international stage.

“Less than one tenth of the budget of Slumdog Millionaire was allocated for
its music. If I had shied away from it, I would have missed all this,” he
said.

He recalled the moment nearly two decades ago, when he stood under the
spotlight receiving a national award for his debut with Roja, directed by
Maniratnam. “I had only as much expectation for this award as I had for that
one!” he said. “Well, after the Golden Globe and Bafta, I had some 5% more
expectation.”

Today, he is all set to source young talent from India, and the rest Asia,
and project them in the international arena; to heights as dizzying as the
one he has achieved. “That was the whole point of starting the KM music
conservatory,” he said. “Also, every
celebrityhttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News-By-Industry/Media--Entertainment-/Entertainment/Post-Oscar-Rahman-lands-3-Hollywood-offers/rssarticleshow/4199421.cms#in
Hollywood is keen on collaborating with the Indian cine-industry
today.”

His answer to the school of though that criticizes SM for projecting India
with a colonial mindset in the global arena: “As an artist, I saw the
moviehttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News-By-Industry/Media--Entertainment-/Entertainment/Post-Oscar-Rahman-lands-3-Hollywood-offers/rssarticleshow/4199421.cms#depicting
the success of an underdog, after much struggle. But, I suppose
other people could feel differently about the movie, and they are entitled
to feel so.”

“The international spotlight is on Dharavi now. I think those kids will now
be properly provided for, with contributions coming in from all over the
world. Some of them have already been assured education and proper living up
to the age of 16.”

“If the same movie had been shot by an Indian director, would it have won
the Oscars?” a question came whizzing in.

Rahman answered, “Yes, provided the director gets hold of an international
distributor, with whom the movie can be sold effectively worldwide.”

(February 27), to pay homage to his almighty.

The music maestro visited a Madrasa-a-Ameeniya in Kadapa in Andhra

Double Oscar winner Allah Rakha Rahman on Thursday dedicated the golden

Balu Mahendra’s verdict gave Rahman his first IndiaGlitz [Friday,
February 27, 2009]

A versatile filmmaker – A vivid inspirer – fantastic cinematographer and
what else? It’s been a great honor for all in putting best words of
appreciation for Filmmaker Balu Mahendra. Tamil Film Industry calls him –
‘Father of Golden Era’ for he had introduced exceptionally innovative traits
in filmmaking.

Here goes the exclusive statement made by Balu Mahendra on A.R. Rahman while
launching the audio of ‘Indira Vizha’.

“I was channelizing the association that finalizes winners of National
Awards. It was during that time when Illayaraja’s ‘Devar Maghan’ and A.R.
Rahman’s ‘Roja’ was in hand-to-hand combat. I was fascinated watching both
the films. For a greater surprise, both the nominees won 7 votes each. And
the task of deciding the winner indeed was directed to me. That was a moment
when I thought none can produce such a fantastic music for the first film
itself. With no options left I voted for A.R. Rahman’.

Also added, ‘Still I remember, Mani Ratnam calling him ‘Kutti Payya’ (Small
Kid) while receiving the award’.

Palo Alto, Calif. (PRWEB http://www.prweb.com/) February 27, 2009 --
Euphonix, a leader in large-format digital audio consoles, media
controllers, and peripherals congratulates composer A.R. Rahman as well as
the sound mixing team of Richard Pryke, Ian Tapp and Resul Pookutty of
Pinewood Studios Group on winning the Academy Award for the critically and
internationally acclaimed film Slumdog Millionaire at last night's gala
ceremony.

Rahman, who captured two Academy Awards last night, one for Best Original
Score and the other for Best Original Song (Jai Ho), used his Euphonix
System 5 digital audio mixing system with EuCon Hybrid to create and mix the
music and score. Earlier this year, Rahman made film history when he became
the first Indian ever to win a Golden Globe for Best Original Motion Picture
Score, as well as the first Indian music director to be nominated for three
Oscars. Rahman also won a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award
(BAFTA) for Best Music in Film.

Meanwhile, Pryke, Tapp and Pookutty, who won the Oscar for Best Achievement
in Sound, mixed the film on a Euphonix System 5 dual operator film mixing
system with EuCon Hybrid option for DAW Control in Pinewood Studios Group's
newly renovated Powell and Pressburger Theatres. This is the first Oscar win
for each of the sound mixers who, in the past few weeks, have already been
taking home top prizes for their talented sound editing efforts. Prior to
last night's ceremony, the trio had also won a BAFTA and a Cinema Audio
Society Award.

Slumdog Millionaire is the sixth feature film mixed on a Euphonix digital
audio system that has won the coveted Academy Award. Euphonix System 5
consoles have long been the choice of the world's best sound mixers, says
Martin Kloiber, Euphonix CEO. With Slumdog Millionaire's landslide win,
Euphonix enjoys its eighth consecutive year of involvement with Oscar-worthy
films. We couldn't be more proud of our clients A.R. Rahman and the
fantastic team at Pinewood Studios Group. Clearly, this talented team and
Euphonix technology are a winning combination.

To date, Sound Mixing Teams working on a Euphonix System 5 digital audio
mixing console have won or been nominated for a Sound Mixing Oscar® every
year since 2001. Even more notable is that Sound Mixing Teams working on
System 5 have won six of the last eight years.

*AO: If you had to pick a ideal acceptance speech because I know you
have
the Golden Globes one and the BAFTA Awards which was very short,
what would
be your ideal acceptance speech when you chilled out in saying it,
without
 millions of eyes on you?*

AR: There's no ideal acceptance speech. You forget something
always. When
you have a piece of paper, it looks ugly. Normally I would just say
All
Praises To God and escape, but now I need to say things about
people that
worked hard, like, you know, Sam Schwartz is my agent in Hollywood
and the
PR people, Hindi PR, and I have to say all the people who have
given
extraordinary opportunity for me to do music in India which became a
bridge
for me to do... um, go to the West, to get the love from the
audience, and
all the people who have given good suggestions, you know, all the
singers,
all the recording engineers, all the musicians, all the lyricists
are very
important, all the people who acted all of the lovely ladies and the
guys in
the action movies, so there's no end actually.

*AO: So there's a long list then, actually?
 *

AR: I can't hold any of my own awards. I can just represent all of
them and
 get...(laughs).

*AO: And you know one of the sad things that has happened recently
is H.
Sridhar (Rahman's sound engineer who has passed away)*

AR: It's sad in a way and it's happy in a way actually.

 *AO: Yeah?
 *

AR: Happy because you can see the whole world point of view in two
different
angles, one as never being born and being born and having the
torture of
living life and living your life and making other people happy is
also one
thing. So here's a person who has worked so hard, who has made
other people
happy who had made a great contribution to art and he's pushed me on
recording and has guided me so much in the beginning days, I owed
him for
having all this extraordinary technology we had, with the support
of him
and both us withstood through that stuff and in a way when you see a
person
die with a good name and people come to mourn and comfort mourners
as I was
then old and cynical and abusing the inner community (laughs) which
we also
see that, but I also wish that, you know, I should go in a way where
I'm not
cynical and not pessimistic about the talent which I hunger and
embraced it
anyway, so that's very important, and to get a good meal every time
. I
pity his family though because I think he died very young. He was
only 48.
 His kids are great.

*AO: Great musicians as well I hear...*

AR: Yeah, they are good. They're gonna be hopefully joining me.

*AO: Really? Excellent! That's great to hear. Speaking of that, who
do you
think... It's a question that many people have said. Who do you
think your
successor will be? I ask this because you've left an indelible mark
already
 in just over a decade.*

AR: I don't know. My kids-I just want to probably educate my kids
in music
and let them have a choice. If I think that, well I know a lot of
musicians
who have done the mistake... well maybe not a mistake, but in my
point of
view, like great violin players and great trumpet players, you know,
they're
all like My sons should not be in music. They should find another,
more
stable job. They've enjoyed the pleasure of being musicians, which
is a
strange case of us not having any more musicians, or very few
musicians who
want their sons to be going into that. I feel it's in a way,
betrayal not
to put your kids into the art which gave you livelihood and gave you
the
respect and love from the people.

*AO: So, what's on your iPod right now?*

AR: I don't have an iPod now (laughs)

*AO: What music are you listening to?*

AR: I'm mostly listening to a film because I'm constantly
traveling. In
L.A. I was listening to a hip-hop station and in London, a classical
 station.

*AO: So what does it feel like to be getting this massive
recognition?
We've been waiting for this for years. I know your fans have been
waiting
for years to see this. I always say, Is the Nobel Peace Prize
next?*

AR: I think the whole attention thing gets wrong if you're craving
that
stuff. I just want to do my bit and get out. And I wanna build
with
people, not destroy them like [Barack] Obama says (laughs). That

Dev Patel, left, ponders a question from Anil Kapoor in Slumdog
Millionaire.

This review first ran Dec. 19, when Slumdog Millionaire opened at Cielo
Vista. Last week, the film won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, and
it's now in theaters across town.

Slumdog Millionaire is a) a new British punk band; b) a hot lowrider; c)
the latest Texas lotto game; or d) one of the most inspiring movies of the
year?

The answer's obvious.

Punkish English director Danny Boyle loves to use loud, pounding music in
his movies, has a knack for what's cool and hip in contemporary culture, and
loves to take chances as a filmmaker. He also has an eye for gritty realism
(Trainspotting), a feel for charming underdogs (Millions), a taste for
the tragic (28 Days Later) and a true love for stories with moral dilemmas

(all of the above).

He puts all of those elements together in the inspired and inspiring
Slumdog Millionaire, a winning film that, like its main character, seems
destined for greater things. Destiny is at the core of this inventive story
about young Jamal Malik, a product of Mumbai's teeming slums, who beats the
odds to compete on the Indian version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, or
millunaire, as its self-impressed host says repeatedly.

But Jamal's not there for the 20 million rupees he could win. He's there for
love.

The movie opens with a Millionaire-like question of its own, then spends
two very fast, engrossing, roller coaster hours answering it -- one of many
ingenious ways in which Boyle and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy
 --

(The Full Monty) tie the circuitous story's numerous threads together.

It's an emotional journey that's well worth the time, but you might need a
strong stomach at times. Slumdog traces Jamal's Dickensian life from
childhood to adolescence, growing up Muslim in the steamy slums of Mumbai,
back when it was known as Bombay, thus the derogatory slumdog nickname.

Jamal and older brother Salim lose their mother during a vicious Hindu
attack. With Latika -- the object of young Jamal's affection -- in tow, they
find refuge with a man one child calls a bloody saint, a double entendre
if there ever was one.

The brothers escape, but leave Latika behind, one of many judgment calls
Salim will impose on his cherub-faced little brother. They live on the lam
and rely on their wits, be it hustling on trains or scamming tourists at the
Taj Mahal. A confrontation with a gun, the same gun that freed them earlier,
separates the siblings for several years.

When they meet again, Jamal is a teenager serving tea in one of India's
numerous call centers and the unscrupulous Salim is muscle for a local
mobster who has Latika in his grubby clutches. That sets in motion the
film's uplifting but far from certain final act, which taps some of that
Rocky rawness with a little of Whale Rider's poignancy mixed in as Jamal
gets on Latika's favorite game show and tackles some tricky questions.

Boyle expertly jumps the story around in non-linear fashion, from the
present to various stages of the past, including his often-brutal
interrogation by police for allegedly cheating on the show. His questioner
eventually relents, calling his story bizarrely possible. In the process,
we get the stories behind the answers, an intimate look at a country in
transition, and a picture of how poverty disenfranchises those in its
thrall. It's pretty telling when Jamal knows whose portrait is on the $100
bill, but thinks the Taj Mahal is a hotel.

Boyle wisely cast unknowns in the lead roles, the better to let this story
of purity and perseverance shine. British TV's Dev Patel brings the kind of
believable wide-eyed, boyish charm to Jamal. Madhur Mittal balances a
brotherly sense of duty with an avariciousness and anger that's menacing.

The director's deft touch, and Anthony Dod Mantle's gritty cinematography,

[arr] Setting the stage for Rahman Show

2009-02-27 Thread Vithur
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The countdown has begun for the mother of all live shows
in the city, the A.R. Rahman nite on April 14, Vishu day.

A two-member team in charge of the technical and production aspects of the
Rahman show, the celebrated composer’s first live show after winning the
double Oscars, landed in the city on Thursday on a one-day recce mission.

Shailesh and Bharath, who have been associated with a number of Rahman
shows during the last four years, first visited the Chandrasekharan Nair
Stadium, the main stage where Rahman will perform live. Both work for
Rapport Productions, the even management company that organises the tours of
A.R. Rahman.

They inspected the venue, deliberated on the position of the stage - the
pros and cons of each - the lay of the land, gauged the wind behaviour, the
natural acoustics of the stadium, its capacity and took stock of the
facilities.

``We normally design the stage after taking a close look at the venue,’’
Bharath, who is in charge of production, said. When the team reached the
stadium, a skeleton of a stage was already present, the one that was used
for a channel presentation. It was at the West end and faced the Palayam
mosque.

Shailesh was more or less happy with the position. ``Ideally, the stage
should have been on the opposite side, right below the mosque. But
accessibility is a problem there. Moreover, there are no rooms on the other
side,’’ he said, standing five-feet high on the half-dismantled stage.

``This side looks fine. It is easy to reach the stage from the main road
and there are rooms at the back which can be used as green rooms for the
musicians.’’

The viability of designing the stage in front of the torch pavilion, facing
the M.K. Joseph Pavilion, was also discussed. The idea was dropped because,
as Shailesh said, the sound could get slapped back from the opposite
pavilion. Further, the seating capacity will also be reduced.

The stage will be 100 feet wide and 70 feet long. It will be roofless.
Except for these basic facts, both Shailesh and Bharath are in the dark
about Rahman’s plans.

``We don’t know what Rahman has in mind. This is the first show after the
Oscars. He would definitely want to give this show a completely new feel,
something that has never been experienced before. He might even have a
unique theme for the show. It’s Rahman, anything is possible,’’ Shailesh
said.

Normally, a Rahman show will have ten big singers and 40-odd musicians.

``For the show here, we feel it might be bigger. That’s the feel we have.
We will get a clear idea after we meet the man himself,’’ Shailesh added.

Bharath was particular that the venue should have chemical toilets. He
found two on the track, behind the bare stage. Bharath told his local
contacts that he would mail a check-list after he gets back in Mumbai.

While Rahman performs live at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, the
performance will be simultaneously projected in two other venues in the
city. ``Rahman himself will reveal the two additional additional venues when
he flies down to Kochi on a day between March 5 and 10 to formally announce
the show,’’ Shailesh said.

The show has been organised by Global Kerala Initiative - Keraleeyam to
obtain funds for their AIDS initiative.

working in night shift and that evening there was a Live in concert by
A R Rahmanji and this venue was abt 50kms away from my place in HYD.
Slept hardly for sometime (as I was very excited to watch the show)
none of my 4nds turned up (was actually planning to go with my 4nds as
i did not had a vehicle)but I was very determined. Some how managed to
pick a katara scooter and travelled all the way to the venue all alone
and had great great fun. I still remember every moment of it.
Rahmanji, A great musician, a great singer, a great composer on top of all A
WONDERFUL AND GREAT HUMAN BEING.
Having said the above I am not trying to prove that I am a big fan of ARR all I
wanted to say is that I have learnt several things from the show, like love for
others and respect for others. MY GOD once said Be
a good son to your parents; Be a good husband to your wife and Be a
good father to your son, and that would make you a good friend to me

So all I wanted to conclude my e-mail with is, lets not differentiate
ourselves. Just love each other, respect each other and I strongly believe that
it would make us reach our god ARR one day.

[arr] I’ve always been an A R Rahman fan: Aishwarya Rai

I’ve always been an A R Rahman fan: Aishwarya Rai

Kolkata, Feb. 27 (ANI): Bollywood actor and former beauty queen Aishwarya
Rai Bachchan said on Thursday that she has always been a fan of double-Oscar
winner A. R. Rahman, and feels fortunate that maximum of her films featured
maestro’s music.

“Working with Rahman has been an absolute pleasure. It’s not just from Taal
to Guru, but it’s from ‘Iruvar’ till ‘Ravana’. In fact, maximum of my films
have enjoyed the music of Rahman and as a music lover and fan, I have always
admired his music and he is a gifted musician,” Rai said, while addressing a
press conference in Kolkata.

The Bollywood actress, who was in Kolkata for the shooting of her upcoming
flick ‘Ravana’, said she was elated at Rehman’s double win at the Oscars for
‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Rai added, though Rahman was very much celebrated in India but winning Oscar
meant the global recognition, which was special.

Talking about Hollywood flick ‘The Pink Panther 2′, Rai said the experience
of working with actor Steve Martin has been enriching.

“Working with Steve Martin was a good experience since he is the institution
of comedy. We grew up watching his movies. So when it came to working with
him and since he had already worked in Pink Panther before, so you know the
kind of film you are going to be a part of. I am very happy that I got a
chance to work with all these great actors because I feel experience is the
greatest teacher of all,” the Bollywood star said.

Comparing her character in ‘Ravana’ with the one in hardcore Hollywood
flick, Pink Panther, the former Miss World said her characters in both the
films were quite challenging.

“These are very different. One is Mani Ratnam and the other Pink Panther. So
you can assume what the audience can expect. Those who watch English movie
know about Pink Panther. Mani Ratnam is the kind of filmmaker we know he is,
so he will present that kind of cinema only,” Rai opined. (ANI)

ARR satisfied with the lyrics, they both came back to B'lore as ARR was

Hi Leslie,

We agree that Suki is no doubt a talented singer and we are even ready to take

and strongly protest Suki's comments who said he wondered how ARR has performed
without him at OSCAR NIGHT. I am not sure if you have watched the interview on

If only ARR's thoughts were this arrogant he wouldnt have been
where he is today.
Gulzar didnt need ARR for his fans like me to love him. We love him from his
days as a sensitive movie director. As far Sukhi is considered, he had huge
hits without ARR. Chak De, haule Haule, Dard-e-disco to name a few.

So the credit for JAI HO's win should go to ARR only... Gulzar won

of this multicultural and multi-religional and multi-regional community

that we are still united, as if we are part of each other.
We definately are united coz we have strong faith on GOD whom we call with
different names, and definately our common interest is in a person who is a
symbol of a true human (Rahman) within this era, whose divinity and
spirituality makes us feel proud of ourselves and we thank GOD for giving
us birth in the form of humans , to understand the pain and sorrows of

Ajay bro, you definately have touched everyone of us with your mail. I
truely agree with your words.
We are humans and every human have their own point of view, and as Brother
Rahman has set an example for everyone of never to hurt any person's
feelings. So we just need to know the views of others, and its definate that
sometimes we may never like it, but its better to keep silence than utter
something, as words are more lethal than actions.

So though we are united, let there be power of unity, as unity is strength

This is going to be long but would like to keep it sweet.

For past many days i have been seeing a lot of aggression and dis
containment towards anybody or anything that has been anti Rahman(music
his movies) or to some extent a personal opinion of the respective
 personality who has said so.

Rahman and his music has been a very strong influence in our lives and
whomsoever who has followed it, but let us be gracious enough to accept
that maybe for X,Y,Z it may not have been or it will never be.In the same
length breadth another individual(singer, composer, director) in their
respective field would have defenitely touched upon their lives.

Music can never be judged to the appreciation that an Oscaror Golden Globe
will have its final say, but how effective that has been to make you feel
enlightened and transformed in that particular vision the creator wanted to
make us believe and the satisfaction we want to derive.

Any Music Director and his respective contribution to music should not be
looked down in this forum, as we must appreciate that he made it on his
own...Maybe that person is not dignity personified like a la Shankar
Mahadevan, but when has the craft superceded the creator. Its as debatable
as Shane Warne being a womaniser, but we love him not being so but for his
 achievements on the cricket field.

A ghazal singer for whatever wrong reasons insecurity has made those
comments: but there are innumerable people in this universe who listen to
his songs for his voice, and feel the pain and relate to his lyrics everyday
  night.

We are a fortunate lot that we have followed a person who has shown us a
path that forgiveness and striving for the best should be our motto and it
is us who should raise our bar not as good music listeners, but to be as
 better human beings.

In his own golden words that he chose hate over love, we should be
embaraseed that we have been criminal and corrupt in our thoughts for others
irrespective of the person(media, reviwers, press, fellowmates etc etc) who
has been affirmative on our thoughts many times but sometimes negative.

Let us try to be better human beings and understand each others pain,
rather than defending our own views and always sticking to it and being
 adamant.

Woof..quite a long mail and not sweet too...hopefully someone will have
the patience to read it in the first place as it is not on a blog and
 neither a review.

 But you guys

[arr] Rahman- The beacon of music

2009-02-27 Thread Vithur
Rahman- The beacon of music IndiaGlitz [Thursday, February 26, 2009]

It took a lot of hard work for the Mozart of Chennai to get to the pinnacle
of success.

Now that A.R.Rahman has acquired not one but two Oscar awards, making his
homeland feel extremely proud to have given birth to a musical genius, he
can concentrate on the fulfillment of his next big dream.

The dream to see his K. M. Music Conservatory grow into one of the premiere
music teaching institutes contributing significantly to the growth of the
budding music makers.

The conservatory which was conceived only last year has still a long way to
go.

Along with offering students several full-time and part-time courses in
classical western music taught by the best of teachers from around the
world, Rahman has also devised a plan to help the less-privileged kids.

To begin with 24 students have been selected from the MGR School run by the
Tamilnadu state government for music training.

These kids were selected on their interest in music and will be taught
violins.

The administrative officer of Rahman’s music school, Jyoti Nair Belliappa
says that the project which has been devised for the children is a long-term
one as the aim is to give them the best training needed to play a symphony
in the future.

Sometimes the students of K.M.Conservatory are also given opportunities to
work with Rahman after they prove their skills in small auditions.

[arr] Jai Ho not my best, says Rahman

2009-02-27 Thread Bivin Chandra

K. Sreedevi | Friday, 27 February , 2009, 18:55

Chennai: Did you know that Slumdog Millionaire - the film that bagged eight
Oscars this year - had no takers when it was released? And that Rahman feels
more passionate about his songs in the Aamir Khan-starrer Lagaan than about Jai
Ho?

“ I had only five per cent expectation about the Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire.
In fact, I was more bothered about my live performance and that was
extraordinary and its impact was much more,” confessed a jet-lagged Rahman at
the first press meet after his Oscar award on Thursday, February 26, in
Chennai.

“Originally, they wanted me to do a live performance of the Hindi remix song,
aaj ki raat. But I wanted to present my own composition before the world
audience and hence I changed it to Jai Ho,” said the Mozart of Madras, who made
up for the two-hour delay in the press meet by patiently obliging the battery
of press photographers and television crew with exclusive shots with both
Oscars in hand.

“Music has no language and it is this aspect that the film has brought out,”
said Rahman who humbly dedicated his double Oscars to all his countrymen.

Confessing that Slumdog Millionaire was definitely not his masterpiece, Rahman
said Jai Ho was more about “a burst of joy and signified the release of
external energy.” He attributed the awards to Gulzar’s skills of making the
songs “phonetically catchy” which clicked with the Western audience.

“Though the Americans are clueless about the meaning of the song, words like
Jai Ho, O Saya, Ringa, ringa seem to have caught their fancy and am happy that
they are now listening to Indian music,” said the Oscar winner, who already has
a couple of Hollywood offers at hand.

When pointed out that the film had bagged the Oscars only under a British tag,
Rahman replied, “Hollywood is the world’s stage and films are pieces of art and
they are valued for their worth. Only India had not got there till now but this
was India’s time. Danny Boyle’s film was a beautiful one and my music was just
an ornament that added to the beauty. This award would popularise Indian music
in the world scenario. A lot of collaboration is possible now.”

Admitting that he felt more joyous and comfortable with devotional songs than
beat songs, Rahman felt that the Oscars had doubled his responsibility and that
now “his priority was doing good films, be it in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu or
English.”

“My dream is to connect people with music and probably this incident has
unified all of us. I think this is a starting point of extraordinary things,”
he proclaimed.

When queried about the partying and gifts that followed the Oscars, Rahman
admitted that he had to leave all the champagne bottles back in the US owing to
Customs trouble and brought back only the 2 Oscar statuettes “which carried a
cash award of $500 each”.

“After all that news, it was my kids who were more relieved to see me back.
They bunked school that day and kept on e-mailing me – Daddy, get back to us,”
said the responsible father.

Chennai: Did you know that Slumdog Millionaire - the film that
bagged eight Oscars this year - had no takers when it was released?
And that Rahman feels more passionate about his songs in the Aamir
Khan-starrer Lagaan than about Jai Ho?

“ I had only five per cent expectation about the Oscar for Slumdog
Millionaire. In fact, I was more bothered about my live performance
and that was extraordinary and its impact was much more,” confessed a
jet-lagged Rahman at the first press meet after his Oscar award on
Thursday, February 26, in Chennai.

“Originally, they wanted me to do a live performance of the Hindi
remix song, aaj ki raat. But I wanted to present my own composition
before the world audience and hence I changed it to Jai Ho,” said the
Mozart of Madras, who made up for the two-hour delay in the press meet
by patiently obliging the battery of press photographers and
television crew with exclusive shots with both Oscars in hand.

“Music has no language and it is this aspect that the film has
brought out,” said Rahman who humbly dedicated his double Oscars to
all his countrymen.

Confessing that Slumdog Millionaire was definitely not his
masterpiece, Rahman said Jai Ho was more about “a burst of joy and
signified the release of external energy.” He attributed the awards
to Gulzar’s skills of making the songs “phonetically catchy”
which clicked with the Western audience.

“Though the Americans are clueless about the meaning of the song,
words like Jai Ho, O Saya, Ringa, ringa seem to have caught their
fancy and am happy that they are now listening to Indian music,” said
the Oscar winner, who already has a couple of Hollywood offers at
hand.

When pointed out that the film had bagged the Oscars only under a
British tag, Rahman replied, “Hollywood is the world’s stage and
films are pieces of art and they are valued for their worth. Only
India had not got there till now but this was India’s time. Danny
Boyle’s film was a beautiful one and my music was just an ornament
that added to the beauty. This award would popularise Indian music in
the world scenario. A lot of collaboration is possible now.”

Admitting that he felt more joyous and comfortable with devotional
songs than beat songs, Rahman felt that the Oscars had doubled his
responsibility and that now “his priority was doing good films, be
it in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu or English.”

“My dream is to connect people with music and probably this
incident has unified all of us. I think this is a starting point of
extraordinary things,” he proclaimed.

When queried about the partying and gifts that followed the Oscars,
Rahman admitted that he had to leave all the champagne bottles back in
the US owing to Customs trouble and brought back only the 2 Oscar
statuettes “which carried a cash award of $500 each”.

“After all that news, it was my kids who were more relieved to see
me back. They bunked school that day and kept on e-mailing me †
Daddy, get back to us,” said the responsible father.

Re: [arr] Setting the stage for Rahman Show

2009-02-27 Thread Shah Navas

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The countdown has begun for the mother of all live
shows in the city, the A.R.

The viability of designing the stage in front of the torch pavilion,
facing the M.K. Joseph Pavilion, was also discussed. The idea was dropped
because, as Shailesh said, the sound could get slapped back from the
opposite pavilion.

[arr] Sound of Slumdog - one in a million!

Sound of Slumdog - one in a million!

 Shashank Chouhan

Not many of us have seen the fêted Hyderabadi Biryani being cooked at the hands
of a gourmand. But when one tastes it, one knows that it is the coming together
of layer after layer of delicious food that culminates into one mouthful of the
almost sinfully aromatic flavour, which is not very typical of Deccan
cuisine. That’s Rahman’s music, if it were to be described to someone so naïve
that he hasn’t heard Rahman before.

AR Rahman’s unmatched talent of bringing together diverse elements of music
transcending borders has been put to good use by director Danny Boyle in his
internationally acclaimed potboiler of a film, ‘Slumdog Millionaire.’ Not only
has the background score that he has composed for the film taken him to new
international shores- he has been applauded earlier in a stage adaptation of
‘The Lord of The Rings’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber, composed for Shekhar Kapur’s
‘Elizabeth- The Golden Age’ and also worked for a Chinese project- it has taken
him where no Indian has gone before- to the Oscars.

What makes the music of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ such a phenomenon? Well, the
answer is complex, just like some of the music itself. The background score is
typically Indian in its essence, but is topped with the best of international
genres. So strong is its presence that it often delivers the message of the
film more effectively than the Oscar winning screenplay, direction or
cinematography does.

What goes into its making? Here is the answer- and all along, keep the
Hyderabadi biryani in mind:

O…saya
Rahaman’s Afro-Arabic crooning invites one to the roller-coaster of a ride that
is set to begin as slum kids are chased away from an air strip by lathi
wielding police wallahs. Drum beats pump up the tempo from the word ‘go’ and as
a plane zooms up, the audiences’ spirits rise in a tide of expectations. The
track is like a train starting its journey and is cluttered with the sounds of
a Mumbai slum- its uncertainties, its claustrophobia, its muck. Rahman helps in
the wanton display of what is known as the spirit of Mumbai. M.I.A (the Sri
Lankan international artist) enters unceremoniously, but establishes her voice
with quite firmness, singing ‘They can’t touch me…’ which is so true,
considering the pace of this number. It proves that the city is anything, but
still and stable.

 Riots
This theme, that supports the most ghastly happening of Mumbai, communal riots,
begins with horrific screeching and illusionary sounds of heavy movement. It’s
the sound of a bloodthirsty mob that drowns human voices in its surge of
passion – quite literally. The thumping is slow and heavy, just like the heart
beat of the small children running away from mad violence. The track moves from
one high to the other with a sense of space being created for something bigger
that is pushing its way through the chaos. But it doesn’t.

Mausam Escape
Rahman, it seems, is deliberately working on fusion throughout the ‘Slumdog…’
album. This track is its testimony as East meets West seamlessly, matching
every sitar pluck with rhythmic violin strains. It’s a masterful blend of
Indian instruments with western percussion. Mausam begins subtle and reaches a
crescendo- seems like you are sitting in a huge stadium listening to wave after
wave of the boldest pieces of Indian and western acoustics. The heavy
percussion and a single hum of a female voice give it that required haunting
and dramatic tinge. After it suddenly comes to a halt, the cycle of layer after
layer of music begins again, only in a mute fashion.

Paper Planes
Rahman has used the internationally acclaimed Paper Planes by M.I.A as the
background to protagonist’s struggle with growing up. The track was
controversial in that it has lyrics that seem to support drugs, piracy,
violence etc. Nevertheless, it was number one on the UK charts and fits with
the situation that Jamaal and Salim find themselves in. The sound is upbeat,
casually chic and accompanied by pistol shots, cling of registers and a kids’
chorus that is chanting about killing someone for the money!

Ringa Ringa
This number- the first proper song with vocals that have clear meaning!- is
Rahman’s tribute to the Laxmikant-Payarelal hit Choli ke peechey from
‘Khalnayak’. It is also a typical Bollywood piece for the international
audience. Even before the Jamaal-Salim duo emerge in a smoky lane of a red
light area in Mumbai, the cheeky female voice, the typical tabla beat and the
unmistakable chhun-chhun of a trinket transports the audience to a courtesan’s
kotha. Ila Arun’s raunchy gutturals along with Alka Yagnik’s almost virgin
vocals (fitting with the scene of a young girl being initiated into the trade)
make Raqib Alam’s lyrics shimmer with an appeal that the
