All ten songs by Golden Globe and BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee
A.R.
Rahman are joyful and diverse, partaking from a wider number of
styles
 than his Slumdog soundtrack.

In addition to the director and composer A.R. Rahman (who is
currently being showered with awards for his score for Slumdog
Millionaire), the luminous stars were on hand to greet the crowd.

Maybe the runaway success of Slumdog Millionaire will inspire
western
audiences to sample more authentic Bollywood fare; with its first-
rate
music, world-class stars, and postcard-ready views of India (not to
mention the relatively reasonable running time), Delhi 6 presents an
 especially welcoming option.

I do appreciate your enthusiasm at the thought of people who are not within the

the converse happening. By overstating Rahmaniacs we  would alienate

Hi All Rahmaniacs,

Thanks to Gopal Sir to share this wonderful event about
oscARR…….

We have all already known that Naanum Kodeeshwaran (Tamil
Version of SDM) was released in TamilNadu…. Yesterday…

Since Feb 19 (when I saw First Ad in Newspaper), I had been
also eager to see the tamil version of the film (But, I have already seen the
SDM two times)…..

Yesterday, I saw Naanum Kodeeshwaran with majority of Tamil
audiences in SugaPriya Complex DTS / AC (QUBE Sound System) ,Anna Nagar,
Madurai ..,…. Wow!…

What a wonderful time it was!

All Tamil Audiences (Non-Rahmaniacs) were excited by
oscARR….BGM, Re-Recording and so on…

I could see infinite happiness in their eyes.

All were expecting the final oscARR won song JAI HO….

Then, All were enjoying the song until end of the song…. No
one came out away….

I feel very happy to see this wonderful changes between
Tamil Audiences(Non- Rahmaniacs ).

Now , Non-Rahmaniacs have started to analyze oscARR Music….

For that, We are Rahmaniacs ….. Let's be proud….

Tamil Version NK Dubbing is superb match…. No Difference for
the English, Hindi and Tamil… oscARR Music is as usual without any sounds
missing in NK…

We should thank here Falcon Films and Actor Simbu, Singer
cum Actor SPB ,Actor Radha Ravi and so on…

Have you seen anybody tamil version of SDM yesterday ?(Especially to Tamil Kavi
Sathish,Tamilinian .) that
is NK…. If any, pls share with our oscARR group…

Most important thing here is Non- Rahmaniacs also want to
expect Hollywood films of oscARR (Universal
Music Director)….. How is it???   definitely
Superbb bb…….

Thanks Regards

H.Sathiyenthira Boopathy.

Ella Pugazhum Iraivan Oruvanukke…..

ARR started his AWARDS career with Filmfares, so the journey

good, you are good ! Others should improve their quality to match with

Rahman's performance. Just by Rahman's withdrawing from awards does

not improve other MD's quality.

Earlier, I remember Filmfare or such awards used to be telecast live,

well not exactly live but delayed live so that the same night we could

see the ceremony, say 2 hours after the actual event.

Now they don't do that but, with the news channels reporting the

awards as breaking news from the venue, the excitement of watching the

Anthony doesn't know what that phrase would be. But he's sure Abbas
will deliver before the song starts shooting in the next couple of
days. I want something like Gulzar Saab's 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' or 'Jai
Ho'. Abbas is a brilliant writer. I know he can do it.

When contacted, Abbas Tyrewala is surprised to hear about Tony's
dissatisfaction with the song. I don't write lyrics any more for
outside assignments. But when it comes to Rahman I can't stop myself.
I thought the song is done and ready to be shot. It wasn't easy
writing two sets of lyrics reflecting two languages, cultures,
thoughts and ways of life. And then the male and female portions of
the song were recorded separately in Mumbai. So I wrote extra lyrics
because we didn't know what shape the composition will finally take
when the two voices are brought together.

About the catchphrase that Anthony D'Souza is looking for, Abbas says,
If any changes are required I'm not aware of them.

[arr] Rahman comes THIS close to death in LA

2009-02-28 Thread Bivin Chandra

While all the hoopla and euphoria surrounding A R Rahman’s double Oscar has
been talked about no one knows he had a close shave with death during the
rehearsals for his stage performance for the Oscars.

The shocking shave with death came to light after Rahman’s return to India on
Thursday when he blurted out the truth innocently.

The accident could’ve proved catastrophic and would’ve meant almost sure-death
for Rahman.

Recalling the nerve-wracking experience Rahman says, “I really don’t know what
happened. Two days before the Oscars we were rehearsing at one of the theatres
for the Oscars, the Jay Leno Show and the Oprah Winfrey Show when a massive
chandelier, covering portion of the ceiling crashed to the spot just a split
-second after I moved away.”

This isn’t just a routine drama-in-real-life occurrence.

Divulges Rahman, “ If I hadn’t moved way I’d have become history after making
history in no time at all.The chandelier crashed exactly at the spot I was
standing in just seconds before. It left me shaken but not terrified. I guess
it was God’s warning not to take any of the good things that are happening to
me too seriously.”

Sighing in relief Rahman says, “I think the love and prayers of all those who
love me saved me. As I walked from the left side of the stage to the right I
could feel a heavy drop from the air, like water rushing down from a height of
30 to 40 feet. So with the good came the rude reminder of how quickly it can
all be snatched away.”

Says Rahman, “When I did Oprah Winfrey’s show for the Oscars she asked me what
Jai ho meant. I said it meant, ‘May the victory be yours.’ She wished the same
back for me and I could see she meant it. It’s the best wishes from the world
over that saved my life that day.”

Rahman says he wasn’t the least scared being so close to death. “What has to
happen will happen. I believe one is constantly walking hand-in-hand with
death. Death is like a constant companion. But let’s not go into dark spaces
right now.”

kamal is agonized/thrilled/angry in his interview.. anyways, two songs for
marmayogi has been completed and they deserve an oscar each, per kamal!

Kamal Haasan, the universal hero of Tamil cinema was in a strong contention
for the Oscar race and thrived his best to win the coveted trophy. But,
Rahman has raced ahead and a generous Kamal is glad that an Indian had
achieved such heights on a global scale.

An exclusive press meet was organized by the actor to express his
congratulations to AR Rahman for winning the Oscars and he also shared his
views about the Oscar awards. He opines that it's a scale which measures the
quality of Hollywood cinema and not world cinema.

Olympics is a competition conducted on a global scale but Oscars are for
America alone and not to be considered to rate our movies.

He also said that he's proud that one of us from Tamil Nadu has gone to make
a mark and make India proud.

Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman, above-left, will try to scale the U.S.
pop charts

A.R. Rahman triumphed at the Oscars Sunday night. Now one of
America's
biggest record labels is hoping the Indian film composer can
conquer the
U.S. pop-music charts, thanks to an unlikely collaboration with
the lead
singer of the pop group the Pussycat Dolls.

The morning after Mr. Rahman's twin victories for best song and
best score
for the film Slumdog Millionaire, Universal Music Group's
Interscope
Geffen AM Records released an English-language pop version of his
prize-winning song Jai Ho. (The title means, approximately, Be
  Victorious in Hindi.)

The new version of the song adds to Mr. Rahman's original music
and vocals
a rough English translation of the Hindi lyrics, sung by Nicole
Scherzinger
of the Pussycat Dolls. You are the reason that I breathe, she
sings in the
song's chorus. You are the reason that I still believe / You are
my
  destiny.

The remix, titled Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny), was produced by
Ron Fair,
the chairman of Interscope's Geffen Records division, and a pop
producer and
songwriter who has created hits for the Dolls, Christina Aguilera
and
  others.

The producers were aiming to have the new song ready for release
immediately after the Oscars whether or not the original won. The
remix was
created over about a month, from mid-January until last week, with
contributions from three continents. Mr. Fair and a team of
songwriters
worked in Los Angeles, with input from Mr. Rahman, via Skype, in
Chennai,
India. On a concert tour with her group, Ms. Scherzinger recorded
her vocal
parts at studios in various cities around England.

Mr. Fair enlisted several lyricists to create English lyrics that
satisfied
competing goals. The challenge was not to make it too literal,
too uncool,
he says. We were trying to make something that would appeal to
contemporary
music fans, yet still be true to the story of the film.

Mr. Fair's new mix preserves the original's electronic dance
beats,
Japanese taiko drums, and soaring Hindi melodies. But partly
because it was

More people are going to the movies despite the bad economy -- or
because of
 it.

Domestic theater admissions were up an unheard of 9.3% in January
and
February, usually one of the slowest times of the year.

In North America, revenues are up 13% for the first two months of
2009,
clocking in at $1.62 billion through Tuesday, according to Rentrak.

Admissions also are on the rise overseas. However, the vagaries of
currency
exchange, including a stronger dollar, are hurting Hollywood.

The six major studios have seen a decline of more than 10% in
revenues from
foreign markets for the first two months of the year.

The value of the euro is off 20% compared with a year ago and the
British
pound has declined more than 35%. But, overall, international
moviegoing
remains decent in terms of local admissions and currency compared
with a
 year ago.

Back home, admissions are often down even when revenues are up,
thanks to
increased ticket prices. This year's spike in actual foot traffic

[arr] Rahmaniat - Outlook magazine cover story

2009-02-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

THe latest issue of Outlook has a cover story on ARR. Unfortunately, they used
the same image
as their sister publication, People did a couple of week ago.

Rahmaniat

And so it is that a shy, diffident man arrives on the world stage with a bang

NAMRATA JOSHI, LATA KHUBCHANDANI ON A.R. RAHMAN
February 22, 2009: India rejoices as A.R. Rahman lifts two Oscars at the Kodak
Theatre in Los
Angeles.
Flashback to 1992: India is taken by storm when Mani Ratnam’s unassuming film,
Roja, gets
everyone hooked to its fresh, irresistibly lilting soundtrack. The film debut
of a shy
jinglemaker, it bags Rahman the national award for best composer, and years
later gets picked
as one of Time magazine’s 10 best soundtracks of all time.

The two milestones to the left span a 17-year-long journey that has not just
been about
personal achievement but also about spearheading a musical revolution, breaking
old moulds and
setting new trends, giving a fresh face to that much-reviled entity called
Hindi film music.
All this managed almost with a remote control, in the peace of A.R. Rahman’s
famous recording
studio in Kodambakkam, Chennai.

Tamil film music had been flourishing thanks to the genius of Ilaiyaraaja, when
Rahman stepped
in and took it in another direction. In Bollywood, however, things were not as
happy. He came
in at a time when Hindi film music had become a parody of itself, says
composer Vishal (of the
Vishal-Shekhar duo). Rahman’s arrival brought to it a new vigour, vitality and
finesse,
broadening the narrow horizons in which Bollywood melodies operated. He showed
new
possibilities and creative ways of making a song, bringing in fresh sounds,
voices and
instrumentation. He took music on an entirely different path, says composer
and singer
Shankar Mahadevan.

Jai Ho lyricist Gulzar

Such has been Rahman’s influence that many contemporary music composers openly
acknowledge that
they owe their careers to him. I had only heard R.D. Burman; for me the whole
cheesy ’80s
music was just noise; I didn’t want to get into film music at all. But after
Rahman, it became
okay to head for the film industry, says Vishal. Music director Shantanu
Moitra found the
courage to leave advertising for films because Rahman showed that there was a
place for
melodic and contemporary sound in Hindi films.

Rahman began to be noticed abroad too. Mihai Chirilov, Romanian film critic and
artistic
director of the cutting-edge Transilvania International Film Festival,
remembers watching
Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan in Locarno’s majestic Piazza Grande back in 2001.
What blew me was
the sophistication of Rahman’s music, the sharpness of its beats and orchestral
richness, that
was miles removed from the Bollywood music I had been exposed to, he says. No
wonder people
took to it across the world, and Rahman went on to collaborate with the best of
talent—from
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (for Gurus of Peace) to Andrew Lloyd Webber in Bombay
Dreams, his biggest
shot in the global entertainment arena before Slumdog Millionaire. Classical
music has always
received respect worldwide, but Rahman took our film and popular music on to
the global map,
says music composer Salim (of Salim-Suleiman fame).

Jai ho: Slum kids hail AR at his Chennai music school-cum-studio

In his own unique way, the shy and deeply spiritual man who creates music from
the silence
surrounding him has reached across and interacted with the entire world. His
music knows no
boundaries, says filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. Having defied localism
with his easy
mobility between the south and the north, he has now effortlessly bridged the
global East-West
musical divide. He understands the global pulse, says classical musician Anil
Srinivasan,
his songs work as well in Paris as in Mali or in NY.

There have been other film composers who have looked westwards for inspiration,
but the
cross-cultural pitch did not define their work as acutely as it does Rahman’s.
Having a strong
grounding in diverse forms of music, his creations show a medley of musical
influences—from
jazz and rock to gangsta rap and Asian Underground. So it is that a hip-hop
groove uplifts a
folksy Genda Phool in Delhi-6, just as reggae rhythm spliced through a simple
tune and turned
it into the very catchy Chinna chinna asai in Roja. From Arabic to jazz to Sufi
to bhajans,
just a single Rahman album (Delhi-6) can encompass his magically eclectic
approach and ability
to harmoniously mix different genres. He uses Western instruments to echo
Indian sounds
whereas the others are doing just the opposite, observes Chirilov. Take his
favourite—Chhaiyyan Chhaiyyan from Dil Se. It’s not just ear candy or
instantly catchy. It is
refreshingly modern in the way it updates the traditional Indian rhythms to
more contemporary
sounds, without making them sound like cheap disco or techno tracks, says
Chirilov.

Whatever the influences, the Indian core has always remained significant in

'He Liberated The Film Song'
He changed the age old format of the film song-- the asthayi and the antara and
then a cross
line to match the asthayi -- that has been our format since the inception of
film music

GULZAR ON A.R. RAHMAN

| E-MAIL | ONE PAGE FORMAT | FEEDBACK: SEND - READ |
When Rahman entered the Tamil and Telugu film industry I do not know how it
affected them, but
when he came to Hindi films with Roja his entry was noticed and much talked
about. Detractors
started saying, He’s repetitive etcetera, but Rahman quietly continued doing
his work and
they fell silent and his music grew on them.

Here people take a lot of time in accepting anything new. That’s a peculiar
quality we seem to
have. He used folk and classical and blended it beautifully. He used western
sounds and
electronics and used them in Hindi music and they didn’t sound foreign at all.
He blended them
so well into our music..

For the lyricists, he made a very important contribution. He changed the age
old format of the
film song-- the asthayi and the antara and then a cross line to match the
asthayi -- that has
been our format since the inception of film music. Rahman let it go and I for
one felt greatly
elated because I have always used blank verse and I was very comfortable with
this form. He
liberated the film song from the earlier shackles. I had used this kind of
writing earlier in
songs like meraa kuchh saamaan tumhaare paas paRaa hai etc but his coming made
it acceptable.

In our music today, Rahman’s presence has made a whole lot of difference. What
else can we ask
for? Not only in India, he has opened up the horizon in the west also. It needs
courage to
experiment the way he does. His Bombay Dreams was an experiment which succeeded
beautifully.

He is totally obsessed with work and, whatever the platform, he enjoys trying
new things.
That’s how he has reached a level where he hasn’t lifted one but two Oscars.
When he lifted
one, he lifted two!

I must add that in the Jai Ho song which won the other Oscar, there was a magic
voice whose
contribution cannot be missed -- that of Sukhwinder Singh. There have been
times when the
singer and the lyricist have won awards and the composer has not but that
doesn’t lessen the
role of the composer.

Rahman is this era.

SADANAND MENON ON A.R. RAHMAN

| E-MAIL | ONE PAGE FORMAT | FEEDBACK: SEND |
Comparisons are odious. But in south India—and in Chennai at least—you can’t
duck the over
15-year-long debate on the comparative ‘genius’ of A.R. Rahman and his musical
senior by
twenty-three years, Ilaiyaraaja. Rahman’s double Oscar haul might have been a
seamless moment
of Indian triumph at Kodak Theatre, but in his native Chennai, it reopened the
old debate. If
Rahman is ‘Mozart’ to his followers, Ilaiyaraaja is ‘Bach’ to his.
The connection between the two goes back a long way. In the early 1970s, as
Ilaiyaraaja was
trying to find a toehold in Kollywood, working with hit music directors like
M.S. Viswanathan,
Salil Choudhury, G.K. Venkatesh and such, he was simultaneously trying to
compose his own
music. The instruments he hired for this were from another south Indian
composer, R.K. Shekhar,
who happened to be Rahman’s father.

Shekhar passed away shortly thereafter, but the family continued to hire out
instruments. By
the early 1980s, Ilaiyaraaja had become the stuff of legend, having already
rewritten the rules
of music composition in south Indian films with his dramatic debut in Annakkili
(1976). As a
good turn to the family that had helped him on the road to fame, he absorbed
the barely
15-year-old Rahman as a keyboard player in his orchestra. For almost 10 years,
Rahman continued
to perform for Ilaiyaraaja, before Mani Ratnam handed him the baton for Roja
(1992). And the
rest, as they say, is history.

The hotly debated issue in the south is whether Rahman would have realised any
of his potential
but for the wide door that had already been pushed open for him—musically— by
the pioneering
work of Ilaiyaraaja. Interestingly, both are proficient in western classical
harmonies and
string arrangements. Both have graduated from the Trinity College of Music,
London, though
Ilaiyaraaja bagged a gold medal there. For classical Indian music, both were
students of
Dhanraj ‘Master’ in Chennai. Both have awesome proficiency on the piano,
keyboard and
synthesizer. On top of it, both are versatile vocalists, with a distinctly
nasal tinge.

Ilaiyaraaja’s over 30-year-long career has seen him compose over 4,000 songs in
six languages,
with a dynamic yoking of south Indian folk tunes to western orchestration,
which brought him
three national awards. Earlier Oscar entries from India like Anjali (1990) and
Hey Ram (2000)
boasted of his music score. Amazingly, he has sung over 400 songs himself.
Rahman has been in
the field for roughly half the time of Ilaiyaraaja. He has won four national
awards and now
holds on to a Golden Globe, a piece of metal from BAFTA and the two Oscar
statuettes.

While the similarities between the two are significant, it is their differences
that should
interest us. Ilaiyaraaja’s music creates itself around and inhabits culturally
identifiable
frames, whether classical, semi-classical or folk. His compositions are
raga-based and even in
western classical-inspired numbers, he acknowledges the sanctity of its
original structures.
Where he makes a departure is in the polyphonic interludes. A typical example
would be his
amazing foot-tapper, ‘Rakkamma, Kaiyye Thattu...’ (Thalapathi, 1991), in which
he moves with
panache from a swiftly orchestrated popular folk tune to a serene, quiet solo
classical with a
deft, magical interlude of hummed bars.

Rahman, on the other hand, is a cleverer sound organiser and it is his artistry
with the
synthesizer that is the hallmark of his music. In fact, Rahman is perhaps the
finest tuner of
short jingles that we have, and his early career was built up composing
advertisement jingles
for coffee, sports shoes and such. This also included, for example, the catchy
signature tune
for Asianet, the first private regional language TV channel in India.

Listening to these, one can construct a fair map of Rahman’s musical method.
Most of his
compositions are, in fact, a stringing together of discrete jingles joined
together by
counterpoints and contrapuntal bridges. A serious examination of his music will
reveal the
carryover of the seductive values of his lineage in advertising. It is devoid
of cultural
markers, unlike in Ilaiyaraaja’s work. This, now, becomes his strength as it
finds ready
resonance in the globalised entertainment industry, which is constantly on the
hunt for ‘sounds
without shadows’.

It has to be said that serious musical work belongs to Ilaiyaraaja. Rahman’s
forte is packaged
marketing of catchy jingles. Of course, one hums along.

An audibly ecstatic and unusually forthcoming A.R. Rahman gives a quick phone
interview in the
middle of a hectic first day back home in Chennai

You have tasted global success before with Bombay Dreams and Lord of the Rings.
How is it
different with the Oscar?

The Oscar gives you the luxury to do more of your kind of work. It opens up
doors for
collaborations with the best of talent abroad. With the two statuettes in my
hand I feel on par
with the best out there. I am no longer intimidated. In the last two weeks in
LA, that white
skin complex is gone.

Will we now find you doing more work abroad than in India?

It’s a difficult decision to take. I certainly don’t want to lose out on the
extraordinary work
a platform like the Oscars will provide in the future.

So what are these extraordinary projects?

There are three or four good projects. You will know more when they happen.

You had a similar opportunity to shift base when Bombay Dreams happened...

I didn’t have enough exposure then. I was not ready mentally. The atmosphere
was new and I
wasn’t comfortable. My body of work was also limited. I have a better
understanding; I am ready
now.

How do you see your own music change now with the forthcoming collaborations?

The transition is yet to be seen. In the past two weeks, all I have given
thought to is what
dress to wear, and if I have to go for The Tonight Show or Oprah Winfrey.

Will we see an amalgamation of the East and the West in your future, mainstream
western work
abroad?

I hope to keep the momentum going. There’s stuff to do with Kylie Minogue and
the Pussycat
Dolls as of now.

You have hugely influenced the film music scene since Roja...

It was society that wanted this change. The younger people wanted my kind of
music. It was the
right moment for me.

Which is your own favourite composition?

I can’t even remember. All I can recollect is Roja...

[arr] At Which Time Dilip Became Rahman

2009-02-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan

At Which Time Dilip Became Rahman

The Music and the Maker, the maestro's faith in Islam has found the twain makes
for perfect
consonance

SHEELA REDDY ON A.R. RAHMAN
Meeting someone for an hour-long interview is no entry ticket to a man’s soul,
but with A.R.
Rahman it seemed like that. The first time I met him was in November ’98 when
he’d come to
Delhi to accept a Channel V viewers’ award for most popular track of the year.
Some three
million viewers had voted for him, which wasn’t surprising, considering how his
music was
already conquering the film world, both in Tamil and Hindi. But what was
unusual was the song
this post-Chitrahaar, Def Leppard-adoring generation chose as their favourite
song of the year,
Vande Mataram. By then, a countrywide row had broken out over the compulsory
singing of this
‘national song’ in schools, but Rahman’s popular, flag-waving rendering of it
(Maa Tujhe
Salaam) was met everywhere, especially among the young, with foot-tapping
enthusiasm. I had to
find out for myself how this young man with Jesus Christ locks, blue jeans and
Muslim name had
so cleverly subverted the mullahs and the Hindu fundoos by getting a whole
generation hooked to
it.
That’s the best part of being a journalist, even a freelance one—you can go
with a question to
anyone, anywhere, and get your answer straight from the horse’s mouth. If you
know how to reach
it, of course. Rahman was easy—I just had to call the Channel V pro. Within
hours, I was
sitting in a hotel suite with this quiet young man with large, still eyes and
hands, dressed
all in black—black jacket, black trousers, black shoes—chatting not only about
the genesis of
his award-winning song (the brainchild of ad film buddy Bharatbala—they both
wanted to create a
song that would make patriotism hip). But as often happens in such moments of
enforced
intimacy, we ended up talking of much more. Such as how he converted to Islam
10 years earlier,
when he was 21.

It started, he said, when his father was dying. Rahman was only 11 years old
then, the middle
child between two sisters. Having tried everything else and failed, the family
turned to a
local pir. My father was very ill then, bed-ridden, and the pir sahib couldn’t
do anything for
him at that last stage. But even after his father died, Rahman’s family still
turned to the
pir for emotional support. And then one day, nearly 10 years later, the pir
sahib came to
Rahman’s home. He blessed a room which is very special to me because my father
died in it, and
which I had turned into my studio. The pir sahib said we were destined to go
through some
unique experiences, including much suffering, and some very hard times. His
prophecy had a
curious effect on Rahman: The moment he said that and blessed the room, I felt
such peace. As
if everything had become green, and my whole life had started afresh.

Within six months, the pir was dead, but the mystical power he had unleashed on
the family
lived on. That’s when Rahman says the family decided to embrace Islam. I felt
that, OK, this
feeling that I have is God. It’s not about Hindu or Muslim or anything, but
there is that one
feeling, and that is God. It was not anything dramatic, he explained, like it
is in films.

It would be hypocritical, he felt, with the dawning of this feeling, if he
didn’t change his
name. And so, Dilip Kumar became Allah Rakha Rahman at the age of 21. For
Rahman and his
family, the conversion was more a change in their attitude to God than anything
else. In
fact, he pointed out, if you take ancient Hindu scriptures, the Rig Veda, it
says God is
one. It’s the mystical aspects of the namaaz that he valued the most, Rahman
said. Prayer is
more like a meditation for me. And it helps me clean my inner self. I go
through death five
times a day when I pray and I am born again. When I start, I feel I am dead and
my soul has
departed and when I finish my prayers I am back.I am born again.

Is it like that each time, I wanted to know. He laughed at my atheist’s
curiosity. I try to
make it like that each time, but sometimes there is so much turmoil in the
head, so much
happening And what if he’s recording when it’s time for his prayers? I
have a small
prayer room next to the studio, and my sister takes over the recording till my
prayers are
done. And if he’s travelling? I carry my prayer mat wherever I go.

In all faith: with wife Saira

Did it make any difference, getting work as A.R. Rahman instead of Dilip Kumar?
In my field,
he said, it doesn’t matter whether you are Hindu or Muslim. If you are good,
you stay; if you
are bad, you get thrown out. On the other hand, he said, his new religion
helped him get the
right attitude to work: to keep his sense of balance and distance. It’s your
attitude in life
that brings you success, he said. So I’ve taken (from Islam) whatever helps
me to get into
that attitude. His music and Islam became inextricably linked together.

TOP 10 ALBUMS THAT BUILT BRAND ‘RAHMAN’

Trying to pick Rahman’s best albums is not easy, because whatever he does is so
good. Selecting a few good ones as his best is something like ‘searching for a
needle in a stack of needles’, to borrow a line from Saving Private Ryan.
Initially, the intention was to make a list of Rahman’s top 10, but it ended up
in 15 and could well have gone up to 25 had it not been for some ruthless
decisions, which could be taken only by one with a strong heart. So, here are
the top 15 albums, not necessarily his best musical scores, but landmark albums
that have helped build ‘brand Rahman’ into the global phenomenon that he is
now.

Sivaji: The Boss :15

We all thought that Shankar would work only with Rahman until Anniyan happened
and everyone thought that a change in order was imminent. But, Sivaji happened
and the famous duo was back together. Superstar in his element called for some
rollicking stuff that would reverberate in theaters. Rahman understood the
requirements and delivered a score which one would not describe as classy but
instantly likeable and popular. An ‘Athiradee’ album, which set unseen records
in audio sales in the recent times.

Kizhakku Cheemayile :14

This was the first album that took Rahman’s music and popularity to the rural
parts of Tamil Nadu. Kizhakku Cheemayile remains his only real hit that was
extremely well received in the villages of the state. The movie’s success and
the expertise of Bharathiraja in handling rural themes did help a lot. This
again went on to prove the critics that Rahman is good at folk tunes too.

Rang De Basanti :13

Rang De Basanti was perfect music for the angry restless generation next.
Some of the numbers really tugged at the patriotic strings in the heart, like
‘Khoon chala’. The anguish of bereavement was perfectly conveyed in ‘Lukka
chuppi’, the suppressed feelings of anger mixed with the relief of having
released it was personified in ‘Roobaroo’ while the Punjabi flavor in ‘Rang de
Basanti’ simply rocked, not to forget the liberating ‘I am a rebel’.

Muthu :12

This was Rahman’s first step outside Indian boundaries. Though many may not
consider Muthu as one of Rahman’s best albums, the movie did take his name and
music as far as Japan. The huge success of the movie in foreign shores gave
Rahman that vital exposure, which should have primed him for all that, was to
follow. ‘Thillana thillana’ is still one popular number among Rajini fans.

Minsara Kanavu :11

This was Rahman’s first chance to do a musical film. He did not let the chance
slip by, showing us his full repertoire of musical skills. The songs became
boundlessly popular overnight; the National Award was a natural and obvious
result. The uninhibited ‘Ooh la la la’, the lilting ‘Vennilave’ and the
sensuous ‘Thanga thaamarai magale’ are proof enough of his versatility.

Boys :10

Contrary to his amazing consistency, Rahman had been going through a bit of a
low phase for a while (only by his own high standards). Boys marked his return
to peak form. The music instantly became a youth anthem. There was a time when
one couldn’t switch channels for 5 minutes without coming across ‘Sa Re Ga Me’
or ‘Maaro Maaro’. The album had tremendous energy and vibrancy about it, the
main reason for the youth loving it no end.

Gentleman :9

This was the start of Rahman’s long and fruitful association with Shankar. The
album was the definition of the word ‘popular’. The film was a huge hit and the
songs were omnipresent. ‘Chikku bukku’ was a craze, so was ‘ottakathai
kattikko’. ‘En veetu thottathil’ and ‘Usilampatti’ were equally popular. Few
other albums have enjoyed such overwhelming popularity.

Alaipayuthey :8

This was romance, getting the right feeling was the most important thing here
and Rahman was bang on target. He made songs that became youth anthems of love.
If one says that the music was the single most important factor in the film’s
success; that is not far off the mark. When Alai Paayuthe released, love was in
the air everywhere. ‘Pachai nirame’, ‘kadhal sadugudu’, ‘snehithane’ evoked
emotions that are yet to be replicated by any other composition. Also, the
stylish ‘endrendrum punnagai’ was the best entry into films that Madhavan could
have asked for.

Kadhalan :7

This put Rahman on the throne of Tamil cinema music, the cassette sales of
Kadhalan

[arr] Being in the studio with ARR is magical- Kylie Minoguw

2009-02-28 Thread Bivin Chandra

Kylie Minogue, petite and sweet as against pin-up sexy girl, ate with delicate
relish in Twinkle and Akshay Kumar’s Juhu Beach living room. In the background,
Singh Is Kinng was playing softly on the music system, but I doubt the
Australian singer and actress knew the song was picturised on her suave and
charming host. Neither did she know that Akshay, with whom she is doing a song
for A R Rahman in the film Blue, is a superstar here. Though Bollywood, coming
to India and doing a Hindi film, was always on her mind. Now she is here,
Bollywood is happening, and Kylie is “loving the little experiences she’s been
having ever since she landed in Mumbai on Wednesday night”.

She said over a cup of coffee after lunch, “I love to be taken out of my...
well, not my comfort zone, but my world... this is certainly far different from
anything I’ve done before.” By which she meant the whole experience of getting
involved with Bollywood and doing the film Blue. “Three days — that’s all it
took,” she revealed. “I presented Rahman the award at the BAFTA, next day we
met to discuss the concept of the song and the lyrics, third day we recorded!
The whole experience was new. I’m not used to recording a song at the last
minute and not knowing what I’m going to be wearing the next day. But this is
not my world, yet I have confidence in the team, and went along...”

Kylie plays herself in the film, it’s a performance-based role, she has a scene
with Akshay and she’s in two songs — yes, with Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and
Zayed Khan. And though she’s been singing and acting all her professional life,
this time it’s different. “The technical aspects are much the same. It’s just
that this is not part of an album. And being in the studio with Rahman is
magical, he’s on the crest of a wave, but is yet such a generous spirit, very
welcoming, he’s relaxed and calm... such a nice person,” she said thinking of
the Indian music genius who’s just back from the Academy Awards with two
Oscars. The music they make together in the film is of the pop genre. “It’s
definitely got an Indian beat,” Kylie said, “and it’s not difficult...
certainly not a challenge for Rahman.”

2009-02-28 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
Quoting Wikipedia cover version, or simply cover, is a new rendition
(performance or
recording) of a previously recorded, commercially released song.

Many popular songs are usually covered by equally popular artistes. E.g. A song
like Words has
been covered by many mainline artistes over the years.

Instead of obtaining rights to include those tracks that are owned by other
labels (e.g. Bombay by Universal), T-Series has opted to produce its own
covers. Only, in this case, the covers are by T-Series' studio artistes with
horrific singing and arrangements.

T-Series is notorious for producing covers, that's how they built up the giant
that it is today.

Rahman must win at Filmfare: Vishal Dadlani
28 Feb 2009, 1812 hrs IST, MONIKA RAWAL

As the Filmfare Awards frenzy sets in tonight, musical duo Vishal-
Shekhar is maintaining their calm. Vishal Dadlani (TOI Photo)

Sans any apprehensions about their nomination for Best Music
Director for Dostana , a confident Vishal Dadlani said, There are
no butterfly moments in stomach as such. We are not thinking much
about it.

Is it just due to the fact that the competition stands pretty close
with A R Rahman being nominated for three films including Jodha
Akbar, Jaane Tu... and Ghajini ? It's not about hoping for an award
for ourselves. I know Rahman will win and he has to, asserts
Vishal.

Impressed by Rahman's international glory, Vishal clearly declares
him as the ultimate winner. Thumbs up to Rahman, he is the best man
of all. He just brought two Oscars to India. He has taken India to
the international platform and by all counts, he deserves this
award.

Though Rahman's Oscar success might be attributed to the Hollywood
venture yet it's his music in totality that speaks for him. Vishal
clarifies, It doesn't make a difference that he got Oscars for
Slumdog Millionaire... and in Filmfare, he's been nominated for
other films. You have to see Rahman's body of work to realize that
he truly deserves this Filmfare award.

TOP 10 ALBUMS THAT BUILT BRAND ‘RAHMAN’

Trying to pick Rahman’s best albums is not easy, because
whatever he does is so good. Selecting a few good ones as his best is
something like ‘searching for a needle in a stack of
needles’, to borrow a line from Saving Private Ryan. Initially,
the intention was to make a list of Rahman’s top 10, but it ended
up in 15 and could well have gone up to 25 had it not been for some
ruthless decisions, which could be taken only by one with a strong
heart. So, here are the top 15 albums, not necessarily his best musical
scores, but landmark albums that have helped build ‘brand
Rahman’ into the global phenomenon that he is now.

 Sivaji: The Boss :15

We all thought that Shankar would work only with Rahman until Anniyan
happened and everyone thought that a change in order was imminent. But,
Sivaji happened and the famous duo was back together. Superstar in his
element called for some rollicking stuff that would reverberate in
theaters. Rahman understood the requirements and delivered a score which
one would not describe as classy but instantly likeable and popular. An
‘Athiradee’ album, which set unseen records in audio sales
in the recent times.

 Kizhakku Cheemayile :14

This was the first album that took Rahman’s music and
popularity to the rural parts of Tamil Nadu. Kizhakku Cheemayile remains
his only real hit that was extremely well received in the villages of
the state. The movie’s success and the expertise of Bharathiraja
in handling rural themes did help a lot. This again went on to prove the
critics that Rahman is good at folk tunes too.

 Rang De Basanti :13

Rang De Basanti was perfect music for the angry restless generation
next. Some of the numbers really tugged at the patriotic strings in the
heart, like ‘Khoon chala’. The anguish of bereavement was
perfectly conveyed in ‘Lukka chuppi’, the suppressed
feelings of anger mixed with the relief of having released it was
personified in ‘Roobaroo’ while the Punjabi flavor in
‘Rang de Basanti’ simply rocked, not to forget the
liberating ‘I am a rebel’.

 Muthu :12

This was Rahman’s first step outside Indian boundaries. Though
many may not consider Muthu as one of Rahman’s best albums, the
movie did take his name and music as far as Japan. The huge success of
the movie in foreign shores gave Rahman that vital exposure, which
should have primed him for all that, was to follow. ‘Thillana
thillana’ is still one popular number among Rajini fans.

 Minsara Kanavu :11

This was Rahman’s first chance to do a musical film. He did not
let the chance slip by, showing us his full repertoire of musical
skills. The songs became boundlessly popular overnight; the National
Award was a natural and obvious result. The uninhibited ‘Ooh la
la la’, the lilting ‘Vennilave’ and the sensuous
‘Thanga thaamarai magale’ are proof enough of his
versatility.

 Boys :10

Contrary to his amazing consistency, Rahman had been going through a
bit of a low phase for a while (only by his own high standards). Boys
marked his return to peak form. The music instantly became a youth
anthem. There was a time when one couldn’t switch channels for 5
minutes without coming across ‘Sa Re Ga Me’ or
‘Maaro Maaro’. The album had tremendous energy and
vibrancy about it, the main reason for the youth loving it no end.

 Gentleman :9

This was the start of Rahman’s long and fruitful association
with Shankar. The album was the definition of the word
‘popular’. The film was a huge hit and the songs were
omnipresent. ‘Chikku bukku’ was a craze, so was
‘ottakathai kattikko’. ‘En veetu thottathil’
and ‘Usilampatti’ were equally popular. Few other albums
have enjoyed such overwhelming popularity.

 Alaipayuthey :8

This was romance, getting the right feeling was the most important
thing here and Rahman was bang on target. He made songs that became
youth anthems of love. If one says that the music was the single most
important factor in the film’s success; that is not far off the
mark. When Alai Paayuthe released, love was in the air everywhere.
‘Pachai nirame’, ‘kadhal sadugudu’,
‘snehithane’ evoked emotions that are yet to be replicated
by any other composition. Also, the stylish ‘endrendrum
punnagai’ was the best entry into films that Madhavan

50 per cent of the year I might be there, the rest over here. Before I

To do so, I might have to leave some movies in India.

50% time in hollywood. it seems we gonna be missing his Indian albums
for some time as hollywood projects would be more orchestra/symphony
based with western type of music. i don't expect (and he should not)
him doing many Indian-oriented music (like in SDM) for hollywood
projects for some time. he should focus on scoring for traditional
hollywood style music to bag some big projects with reputed directors.
anyways all in all we gonna miss his Indian albums for some time, it
seems so.

But the funniest part was, while rehearsing at the Kodak Theatre,
every time they would do the mock announcements, they would call out
everyone's names as winners except me. That made me sure I wasn't
getting the Oscars. I was prepared to clap for others.

For me, those six kids from Slumdog Millionaire, who belong to a
humble part of our own Mumbai;
walking the red carpet with the highest-paid Hollywood stars at the
Oscars was the highest
moment. That to me was the truest display of the democratic spirit.
Compared with that, my
 getting the Oscars is inconsequential.

These kids didn't even have a birth certificate in the first place
but got their passports and
visas within three days. That's the real miracle. I would like to
hand it to Danny Boyle and
the producers for looking out for those kids.

I came back to Chennai on Thursday morning and couldn't believe what
I saw. There were
5000-6000 people waiting for me at the airport. Everyone wanted to
touch me, shake hands with
me. I almost got killed by love. Now that I am home with my
children, I feel strangely calm and
euphoric. My mother, sister and wife were with me at the Oscars, but
not my kids.

•To see you holding those two Oscars was a wonderful historic
moment.
It was, wasn't it? Earlier we missed it. Each time I would see those
disappointed Indian faces
after the Oscars, I wished that someone would go and get it for us.
This time we cracked it.
Resul Pookutty and I getting the Oscar have brought India into the
centre of the popular
culture. That's a big high for me. I only wish Gulzar saab and
Sukhwinder were there to share
 the moment with me.

 •Why weren't they there?
I wanted Gulzar saab to be there. The producers had sent him a
ticket, but he hurt his shoulder
and had to cancel the ticket. Anyway they called out Gulzar saab's
name on stage. I felt good
 about that.

•Were you surprised by the two Oscars?
I was numbed. 20 seconds after the announcement, I had to run
backstage, get into my costume,
put on my headset and perform like a rock star. To do all this
gracefully was quite an
achievement. I was sure, I wouldn't get two Oscars. I just thought
performing on stage was a
 great honour.

But the funniest part was, while rehearsing at the Kodak Theatre,
every time they would do the
mock announcements, they would call out everyone's names as winners
except me. That made me
sure I wasn't getting the Oscars. I was prepared to clap for others.
So when my name was
announced, the joy was double. When the first Oscar was announced, I
never dreamt I would get a
second one, though the second one was more predictable. Everyone out
there loves `Jai ho'.

•Would you say the Oscars are the highest moment of your life as
an entertainer?
No. A year ago, I underwent a spiritual experience, which was far
greater than all this glory
can ever be. It happened during one of my pilgrimages. It made me
calm. So all the good stuff
that happened to me after Slumdog was like an offshoot of the
experience I have had last year.
My music is an extension of my spiritual aspirations.

•How do you look back on the last two months?
I didn't expect the BAFTA. I thought the British had a different
taste. But the impact of the
 movie and music is all-pervasive.

•Suddenly you have become one of them.
In LA and Hollywood, I felt the same way as a guy coming from a
small town of India feels in
Mumbai. But once I got to know them well, I found them as human as
any ordinary person. Slumdog
has impacted everyone's life so much. I am looking at a couple of
projects in Hollywood. I have
to be very careful what I choose. I don't want to end up as a one-
hit wonder.

Re: [arr] At Which Time Dilip Became Rahman

2009-02-28 Thread Srini Santhanam
There is so much to learn from Rahman - the human being isnt it? to be
half as good as him is great enough.

At Which Time Dilip Became Rahman

The Music and the Maker, the maestro's faith in Islam has found the

SHEELA REDDY ON A.R. RAHMAN
Meeting someone for an hour-long interview is no entry ticket to a
man’s soul, but with A.R.
Rahman it seemed like that. The first time I met him was in November
’98 when he’d come to
Delhi to accept a Channel V viewers’ award for most popular track of
the year. Some three
million viewers had voted for him, which wasn’t surprising,
considering how his music was
already conquering the film world, both in Tamil and Hindi. But what
was unusual was the song
this post-Chitrahaar, Def Leppard-adoring generation chose as their
favourite song of the year,
Vande Mataram. By then, a countrywide row had broken out over the
compulsory singing of this
‘national song’ in schools, but Rahman’s popular, flag-waving
rendering of it (Maa Tujhe
Salaam) was met everywhere, especially among the young, with foot-
tapping enthusiasm. I had to
find out for myself how this young man with Jesus Christ locks, blue
jeans and Muslim name had
so cleverly subverted the mullahs and the Hindu fundoos by getting a
whole generation hooked to

it.
That’s the best part of being a journalist, even a freelance one—you
can go with a question to
anyone, anywhere, and get your answer straight from the horse’s
mouth. If you know how to reach
it, of course. Rahman was easy—I just had to call the Channel V pro.
Within hours, I was
sitting in a hotel suite with this quiet young man with large, still
eyes and hands, dressed
all in black—black jacket, black trousers, black shoes—chatting not
only about the genesis of
his award-winning song (the brainchild of ad film buddy Bharatbala—
they both wanted to create a
song that would make patriotism hip). But as often happens in such
moments of enforced
intimacy, we ended up talking of much more. Such as how he converted
to Islam 10 years earlier,

when he was 21.

It started, he said, when his father was dying. Rahman was only 11
years old then, the middle
child between two sisters. Having tried everything else and failed,
the family turned to a
local pir. My father was very ill then, bed-ridden, and the pir
sahib couldn’t do anything for
him at that last stage. But even after his father died, Rahman’s
family still turned to the
pir for emotional support. And then one day, nearly 10 years later,
the pir sahib came to
Rahman’s home. He blessed a room which is very special to me
because my father died in it, and
which I had turned into my studio. The pir sahib said we were
destined to go through some
unique experiences, including much suffering, and some very hard
times. His prophecy had a
curious effect on Rahman: The moment he said that and blessed the
room, I felt such peace. As

if everything had become green, and my whole life had started afresh.

Within six months, the pir was dead, but the mystical power he had
unleashed on the family
lived on. That’s when Rahman says the family decided to embrace
Islam. I felt that, OK, this
feeling that I have is God. It’s not about Hindu or Muslim or
anything, but there is that one
feeling, and that is God. It was not anything dramatic, he
explained, like it is in films.

It would be hypocritical, he felt, with the dawning of this
feeling, if he didn’t change his
name. And so, Dilip Kumar became Allah Rakha Rahman at the age of
21. For Rahman and his
family, the conversion was more a change in their attitude to God
than anything else. In
fact, he pointed out, if you take ancient Hindu scriptures, the
Rig Veda, it says God is
one. It’s the mystical aspects of the namaaz that he valued the
most, Rahman said. Prayer is
more like a meditation for me. And it helps me clean my inner self.
I go through death five
times a day when I pray and I am born again. When I start, I feel I
am dead and my soul has

departed and when I finish my prayers I am back.I am born again.

Is it like that each time, I wanted to know. He laughed at my
atheist’s curiosity. I try to
make it like that each time, but sometimes there is so much turmoil
in the head, so much
happening And what if he’s recording when it’s time for his
prayers? I have a small
prayer room next to the studio, and my sister takes over the
recording till my prayers are

done. And if he’s travelling? I carry my prayer mat wherever I go.

In all faith: with wife Saira

Did it make any difference, getting work as A.R. Rahman instead of
Dilip Kumar? In my field,
he said, it doesn’t matter whether you are Hindu or Muslim. If you
are good, you stay; if you
are bad, you get thrown out. On the other hand, he said, his new
religion helped him get the
right attitude to work: to keep his sense of balance and

Well, now with his ‘Marmayogi’ getting shelved due to unknown reasons,

You have tasted global success before with Bombay Dreams and Lord of
the Rings. How is it
 different with the Oscar?

The Oscar gives you the luxury to do more of your kind of work. It
opens up doors for
collaborations with the best of talent abroad. With the two
statuettes in my hand I feel on par
with the best out there. I am no longer intimidated. In the last two
weeks in LA, that white
 skin complex is gone.

Will we now find you doing more work abroad than in India?

It's a difficult decision to take. I certainly don't want to lose
out on the extraordinary work
a platform like the Oscars will provide in the future.

So what are these extraordinary projects?

There are three or four good projects. You will know more when they
happen.

You had a similar opportunity to shift base when Bombay Dreams
happened...

I didn't have enough exposure then. I was not ready mentally. The
atmosphere was new and I
wasn't comfortable. My body of work was also limited. I have a
better understanding; I am ready
 now.

How do you see your own music change now with the forthcoming
collaborations?

The transition is yet to be seen. In the past two weeks, all I have
given thought to is what
dress to wear, and if I have to go for The Tonight Show or Oprah
Winfrey.

Will we see an amalgamation of the East and the West in your future,
mainstream western work
 abroad?

I hope to keep the momentum going. There's stuff to do with Kylie
Minogue and the Pussycat
 Dolls as of now.

You have hugely influenced the film music scene since Roja...

It was society that wanted this change. The younger people wanted my
kind of music. It was the
 right moment for me.

Which is your own favourite composition?

I can't even remember. All I can recollect is Roja...

Re: [arr] Video: Kamal on ARR achievement

2009-02-28 Thread Srini Santhanam
Well, even before watching the video i was under the prejudice that
Kamal would have come with cryptic / egoistic praise for AR.. (im NO
way a big fan of AR).. partly because even my mom said there were
media reports that kamal has said something wrong about people going
crazy after the Oscar win.

but i must say that he wasn't being any of that.. what he said was a
fair assesment of the award. I have always felt that the oscars are
not a Olympics of movie (Though Hollywood represents bulk of the movie
industry its doesnt have representations from all over the world).. I
would not be very impressed by an indian movie winning a 'best foreign
movie' award.. There were signs of egoism in his speech, but if he is
only human (and he is not AR Rahman). Obviously he is a Big IR fan, so
he is not able to take it all in good spirit that AR beat every one
else to the Oscar glory.

What's amazing about AR's achievement is that he could compete with
the best in the legends and hollywood in their homeground and come out
triumphant - it deserves all adulations!!

It was also nice to see Kamal come out in support of the movie - and
say that showing discotheques and skylines does not represent india
and u will have to show the slums if you are to reflect the real
India. He said, 'We should not be angry with Danny boyle for showing
the slums, We should be angry with ourselves that we have slums and do
something about it' - Similar sentiment to what AR said.

The only question I had for Kamal is - when you are clear about what
an oscar is? and that it represents only the western movie industry,
why submit your movies for nominations?

Cheers,
Srini

Kamal Haasan, the universal hero of Tamil cinema was in a strong
contention for the Oscar race and thrived his best to win the
coveted trophy. But, Rahman has raced ahead and a generous Kamal is
glad that an Indian had achieved such heights on a global scale.

An exclusive press meet was organized by the actor to express his
congratulations to AR Rahman for winning the Oscars and he also
shared his views about the Oscar awards. He opines that it's a scale
which measures the quality of Hollywood cinema and not world cinema.

Olympics is a competition conducted on a global scale but Oscars are
for America alone and not to be considered to rate our movies.

He also said that he's proud that one of us from Tamil Nadu has gone
to make a mark and make India proud.

Re: [arr] Video: ARR meets press; clarifies almost ALL questions

2009-02-28 Thread Srini Santhanam

Thanks Thulasi..

There are some nice things that he has said here. What a human being..
If there is an oscar for being humble - he will win it hands down!

I'm just writing the ones he said in tamil here:

- I thank everyone for the extraordinary reception you gave me when i
came back with 2 oscars. Thanks for all your love and prayers.
- Oscar is a big award, but my fans are more important to me and i
value it more.
- There are 350 million americas 3 times more Indians - Their prayers
and love mean more to me.
- I have no end goal. You cannot have end goals in Music. Its a
spiritual thing.
- Music has a power to bring unity and removes the divide across
religion, ethinicity and language. He also said 'NORTH SOUTH'
- There is always an apprehension towards new things. Now I hope the
west will start to hear more of Indian / Asian music.
- There are a few rules to each industry. There is a difference
between our styles, our movies run for 2.5 hours while theirs is 1.5
hours. They may not like the music presented the way it is in our
movies, as the songs (in the movie) are inserted nicely between it has
created an impact.
- I want the tamil film industry to move to the next level and it
doesnt happen with one person. it has to be a team effort. I'm
currently workings with Maniratnam, Shankar, Gautam Menon and Kathir.
- Initially they were shooting the end credits with a different song,
then i felt Jai ho would be appropriate finish and did that..

- I am getting hollywood offers, i'm planning to take up 2 movies.
- We don't need to everytime cater to western audience, satisfying our
audience is a big thing!
- but I blabbered (:)) in my first interview that i want my music to
reach globally. When you say something you have to do it and its good
thats happened.
- I met Resul first during Hindi Ghajini and was really impressed with
his work and i'm very happy he won the oscars.
- When a song creates an impact on people or changes a society thats
more important than an oscar. Like a husband who wants to commit
suicide because of hatred towards his wife, listens to the song and
understands the depth of love and changes his decision. thats important.

Friends, please correct it wherever i have got the statements wrongly.

Re: [arr] 'He Liberated The Film Song'

2009-02-28 Thread Niraj Sinha
my 2 cents, pls forgive if any info is wrong

In a music industry where duo sisters ruled the roost followed by Alka and
others it is Rahman who would give a song to any new comer, he can easily use a
new voice, It may not be perfect on sur/pitch or range but Rahman makes it
acceptable and the song strikes a great chord with people like aye bachchu,
behka mai behka. So isn't he promoting besura singers. No wait a minute when
the situation needs he would go for a perfect sur like aaja balam in Yuvraaj
(title theme) or radha kaise me jale on raag bhimpalasi in Lagaan or ghanan
ghanan on raag Kafi in Lagaan, so he knows his music very well. His
orchestration is heavy  and muliti layered and that is why it takes a while for
his songs to grow over you.

Just to add few things more. ARR is a thinking, innovative and evolving
composer all the time. His Hindi songs in 90s had strong influence of Carnatic
classical but then when one listens to RDB song or Mangal Pandey's tumhari adao
pe mai wari wari (raag darbari) ot title theme one can easily identify these
with freedom fight in North Indian backdrop. Another thing very unique about
him is he is not afraid of using modern instruments in a song based on old
story like in Shaheed Bhagat Singh songs he has used both matka and synthesizer
(mahi ve) and extensive keyboarding in desh mere in same film, similarly in
tumhari adao pe mai wari wari he would easily use heavy bass drones which
otherwise a conservative composer wouldn't.
In ye jo des hai tera (swades) he has used Sehahnai and drums in same breath,
he would use software in a song like jage haain to create sound of santur and
get away no one minds and ARR establishes a trend this way.
Another thing is his editing, mixing and recording technique, It is said in
Roja he recorded the same thing over and over so that even those buying
cassettes get audio quality of CD. He has largest collection of softwares and
instruments, he often arranges instruments for his players. When he asks a
player to paly a dhun it is recorded and then it is kept as bank to be used at
appropriate time, if it is used in a song , the gyu gets moneya and thank title
on a cassette or CD cover. No one ever did this for any instrumentalist till
date in Bollywood hence he is immensely popular with players. This is why names
like Kuttu and Shivamani are house hold thee days.
He keeps abreats of latest develpment in world music and the effect is there to
see. He used MIA to do rap lyrics in O Saya. Similarly he has used a black
rapper for BGS of lord of rings. He has changed his keyboards to over 20 times
in last 15 years and makes sure he uses the best modes and sounds. He has a
large collectioin of audio sample from several sources (remember killer rhythm
of aiyo aiyo o from Rangeela? that is audio sample..!) and he himself has
created large number of samples for every one to use.
And about humiliy kya kahne, if there was a oscar for humility it would go to A
R Rahman for suree.

He changed the age
old format of the

asthayi -- that has
been our format since the inception of film music.

What
else can we ask

but with A.R.

He laughed at my atheist’s
curiosity. I try to
make it like that each time, but sometimes there is so much turmoil in the
head, so much
happening... . And what if he’s recording when it’s time for his prayers? I
have a small
prayer room next to the studio, and my sister takes over the recording till my
prayers are
done. And if he’s travelling? I carry my prayer mat wherever I go.

While all the hoopla and euphoria surrounding A R Rahman’s double Oscar has
been talked about no one knows he had a close shave with death during the
rehearsals for his stage performance for the Oscars.

The shocking shave with death came to light after Rahman’s return to India
on Thursday when he blurted out the truth innocently.

The accident could’ve proved catastrophic and would’ve meant almost
 sure-death for Rahman.

Recalling the nerve-wracking experience Rahman says, “I really don’t know
what happened. Two days before the Oscars we were rehearsing at one of the
theatres for the Oscars, the Jay Leno Show and the Oprah Winfrey Show when a
massive chandelier, covering portion of the ceiling crashed to the spot just
a split -second after I moved away.”

 This isn’t just a routine drama-in-real-life occurrence.

Divulges Rahman, “ If I hadn’t moved way I’d have become history after
making history in no time at all.The chandelier crashed exactly at the spot
I was standing in just seconds before. It left me shaken but not terrified.
I guess it was God’s warning not to take any of the good things that are
 happening to me too seriously.”

Sighing in relief Rahman says, “I think the love and prayers of all those
who love me saved me. As I walked from the left side of the stage to the
right I could feel a heavy drop from the air, like water rushing down from a
height of 30 to 40 feet. So with the good came the rude reminder of how
quickly it can all be snatched away.”

Says Rahman, “When I did Oprah Winfrey’s show for the Oscars she asked me
what Jai ho meant. I said it meant, ‘May the victory be yours.’ She wished
the same back for me and I could see she meant it. It’s the best wishes from
the world over that saved my life that day.”

Rahman says he wasn’t the least scared being so close to death. “What has
to happen will happen. I believe one is constantly walking hand-in-hand with
death. Death is like a constant companion. But let’s not go into dark spaces
 right now.”
