A.R. Rahman in Thiruvananthapuram
Baiju NT [February 25, 2009, 11:45:01 AM]

Much-celebrated Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman, who has created a landmark in
the history of Indian cinema by winning a double Oscar triumph for Danny
Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire at the 81st Academy Awards , will visit
Thiruvananthapuram on April 14.

He will also conduct a live music concert at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium
in the city as part of an initiative by Global Kerala Initiative, a non-profit
social organization, to collect funds for the rehabilitation of AIDS-afflicted
children. The charity show will be part of A.R. Rahman’s world tour.

Meanwhile, over 1,500 members of the Cine Musicians' Union (CMU) that
represents the entire South Indian cinema (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and
Kannada), is all set to felicitate A.R. Rahman upon his return to Chennai on
March 1. This will be the start of a long series of functions in India that
Rahman has graciously agreed to attend, CMU chairman S.A. Rajkumar said on
Wednesday.

A three kg silver memento in the shape of a globe with the etched logo of the
body will presented to Rahman by legendary Carnatic musician M.
Balamuralikrishna in the presence of music directors M.S. Vishwanathan,
Ilayaraja and singer S.P. Balasubramanian. The memento is being made at a cost
Rs. 300,000. According to film industry sources, a special 'chariot' is being
readied to ferry Rahman from the airport upon his arrival.

there is no album called chathurbujam and this song is not done by ARR.
This is a remix of Thodakashtakam which was released as a part of Sacred

Re: [arr] Where were Slumdog songs/ music placed in the film

2009-03-01 Thread dileep.srinivasan
 3. Mausam Escape
 ?

this is cut into two pieces and used ... once when the kids escape
from maman and the second one when salim catches latika when she tries
to escape.

 5. Paper Planes [DFA Remix]
 ?

this plays at the taj mahal

 7. Liquid Dance
 ?

this masterpiece is very very ... ad infinitum ... poorly used. it
comes when when jamal chases salim's car in an auto to trace latika..

 8. Latika's Theme
 ?
used at many places .. mainly when the kids return to bombay and ask
around her whereabouts

 10. Millionaire
 ?
when jamal is released from the police and on his way to the show on
second day for the final question.

 11. Gangsta Blues
 ?

this is a really hopeless track.. it is more of blaaze's composition
than ARR's im pretty sure. this was actually a great opportunity to
come up with a good american style rap.. but blaaze lost it squarely.
this plays when latika takes bath and.. salim leaves the hotel to meet
javed to seek help while drunk.
it was a good situation but a very badly composed tune. thumbs down

 12. Dreams on Fire
 ?

condensed into latika's theme

Wonder how he's fitting all his trophies in the space that he has. He
will continue to rack up the awards and will need bigger space. I
think he will eventually need to devote an entire room just for his
trophy awards...:)

[arr] Ella Pughazum Iraivan Oruvareke - A Slogan Now

2009-03-01 Thread Vithur
In Chennai, as well as over the entire state of Tamil Nadu, the most famous
saying now and ever would be Ella Pughazum Iraivanen oruvareke

( All Praises to God Alone )

We see this tagline attached to every hoarding, banner, ad of ARR, and we
have started to end our Food Distribution events with saying this and
attributing our success to God.

Today, while distributing food packets , we were chanting this as a mantra
to ourselves and people could easily attach ourselves to ARR. They were
smiling, enjoying and linking us with our Meastro.

Its a wonderful tag line, and if understood , experienced can relieve one
self of one's Ego and make him more humble, modest and close to God.

Thanks ARR for giving us this tag line and creating an impact in our lives.
we follow your principles, and say

Ella Pughazum ARR oruvareke. ( All Praises to ARR alone )

[arr] I believe I was able to win the Oscars only because of the blessings of the Almighty - ARR

2009-03-01 Thread Vithur
*Kadapa, Feb. 28: *A.R. Rahman rushed to place both his Oscars before the
tomb of a Sufi saint within hours of his arrival in India from Los Angeles.

The composer arrived at the Ameen Peer Dargah in Kadapa, 405km southwest of
Hyderabad, to pray at the Hazrat Khwaja Syed Shah Ameenullah Malik Urs on
its third and last day.

After the special Friday prayers, the *tahleel fateha*, he told reporters he
never missed Urs at the shrine since he had sought spiritual guidance from
the Peer throughout his life, on personal and professional matters. “I
believe I was able to win the Oscars only because of the blessings of the
Almighty and the Peer of Ameen Peer Dargah.”

Rahman — who wore a white pyjama, red kurta and the traditional white cap —
arrived with his mother and brothers. He offered a *chaddar* and sought the
Ameen Peer’s blessing. He knelt down to pray, with his family joining him.

Text:
CHENNAI: The sounds of a piano filter down from the music school a few
metres away as M Haricharan Das talks about a little boy who used to visit the
store with his father and curiously touch the instruments. The director of
Musee Musicals, who is also national manager for India for Trinity College,
London, says A R Rahman first came to his shop at the age of 11.

Like any other little boy, he was fascinated by the instruments, says Das.
His father was a composer in the Malayalam film
industryhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Chennai/M_Haricharan_Das_talks_about_Rahman/articleshow/4206193.cms#and
he would come often with Dileep, as we knew Rahman then, to buy
instruments, look at new arrivals or just say hello, he says.

Rahman also studied music at Musee Musicals the largest centre outside
London where students take Trinity College of Music exams between 1995 and
2001. He studied with the late Jacob John, who taught here for 40 years.
Rahman was studious, eager to learn and would even visit Jacob's house after
classes to learn more, says Das.

Former Trinity College principal Gavin Anderson, who met Rahman during a
visit to India, told Das that Rahman was someone to keep an eye on as he
has a bright future and will be a celebrity. I was happy to hear it but
didn't pay too much importance to it, says the 72-year-old. Musee Musicals
has been affiliated with Trinity College since 1901 and last year, over
3,000 students appeared for the exam. When the exams were first held in
1901, only two students appeared and both failed, says Das. I'm happy to
say our record has improved a lot since then, he says, laughing.

This 167-year-old music shop has helped nurture almost every big
musicianhttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Chennai/M_Haricharan_Das_talks_about_Rahman/articleshow/4206193.cms#in
the city. From Viswanathan Ramamurthy, Ilayaraja and Harris Jeyaraj to
Sivamani, G V Prakash and, of course, Rahman, film musicians have either
studied or bought instruments here. Musee Musicals is the starting point
for all musicians, whether film or classical, says Kishore, Das' nephew and
one of the directors. Ilayaraja sent his children and grandchildren here
even though we were willing to send the teachers to their house. Musee
Musicals has great sentimental value for musicians and they feel it has the
right vibes, he says.

Racks of guitars line one side of the store, horns, trombones,
saxophoneshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Chennai/M_Haricharan_Das_talks_about_Rahman/articleshow/4206193.cms#and
violins fill 19th century display cases' music books fill another row
of
shelves, two ancient double bass sit atop a cupboard, and an old clock
tucked into an alcove ticks away. On the mezzanine floor is the section
selling Indian instruments veenas, flutes, tablas.
At the back of the store, swanky new and seeming slightly out of sync with
the rest of the old-world feel, is the piano section inaugurated in 2005 by
Rahman, where grand pianos and uprights gleam, Steinways sitting next to
Yamahas. Rahman has not forgotten the people who knew him when he was
nobody. It shows his upbringing and that's his greatest strength, says Das.
Kishore adds that Rahman bought pianos for his KM Conservatory of
Musichttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Chennai/M_Haricharan_Das_talks_about_Rahman/articleshow/4206193.cms#and
a guitar for his son from them.

The Das family has owned Musee Musicals, set up in 1842 as Misquith and Co,
since 1964. My father joined the store as an accountant in 1934, when it
was run by a Frenchman E A Prudhomme who had renamed it Musee Musicals, and
Amy de Rozario, a British citizen of Spanish origin. M G Das eventually
rose to become one of the directors of the company and both Prudhomme and de
Rozario left him their shares when they died. Amy de Rozario was my piano
teacher too, says Das. Back then, only Western music instruments were
sold. We introduced Indian instruments only after independence, he says.

Musee Musicals now has 40 employees and 11 teachers who give lessons in
piano, guitar, drums, wind
instrumentshttp://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Chennai/M_Haricharan_Das_talks_about_Rahman/articleshow/4206193.cms#,
Indian and Western vocal music, violin, electric keyboard and other
instruments. We want more people to take up music as a career whether as
teachers, singers, directors, composers or instrumentalists, says Kishore.
Not everyone can be a Rahman, but music is a way to spread joy.

That was the correct answer that made a slumdog a millionaire. Perhaps, it
was also written that a modern-day fairy tale with a largely unknown star
cast would sweep the Oscars, past such big-name films as Milk and The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Slumdog Millionaire's eight Oscars was the largest total won by a single
film since The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won 11 in 2004.
The film, directed by Danny Boyle, was nominated for 10 awards.

I saw it only a few days before the Oscars - mostly because friends had
nagged me to do so. And then I was rooting for the film with all my heart.
Sure, it's a well-made film, but it was more special for me because it is
about India.

Not the India that is a jobs outsourcing destination where everyone is
upwardly mobile and the growing middle class is a lucrative consumer group
for the multinationals. Nor is it about the yuppie India that dresses in
designer outfits, lives in air-conditioned McMansions and zips around in
high-end luxury cars.

Instead, the film highlights the other India, where millions live in poverty
and squalor in shantytowns, where sanitation is dismal, where exploitation
is rampant and violence is a way of life.

Slumdog is a pejorative term for a person who hails from the slums.

Too often the India that is a stark reality for hundreds of millions of
people gets lost amid reports about the country's booming economy. Then,
along comes a film that's a breath of fresh air. A film that, as a colleague
put it, is so grim and yet so uplifting.
(2 of 2)

It reminds us of the harsh realities of life, it brings tears to our eyes
with its narrative of exploitation, it angers us that in this day and age
such desperation, poverty and squalor still exist and the most innocent and
vulnerable are always the first victims.

Yet, it offers us hope that even the deepest anguish can be overcome. Hope
is a potent word; it can inspire an electorate, sustain a nation and guide a
leader's course toward rebuilding and recovery.

In my everyday reality, hope is what drives me. As friends lose jobs and
struggle to make ends meet, as credit card bills pile up and 401(k)s
deplete, as budget deficits mount and wages are squeezed, as college
education becomes expensive and health care exorbitant, as retirement seems
a distant dream and guaranteed employment a mirage, hope is what offers some
solace.

There's a song in Slumdog Millionaire called Jai ho. Music director A.R.
Rahman won an Oscar for it. The song's title can be translated loosely as
victory or triumph and it is, quite aptly, the grand finale of the film.

Rahman's music breathes life into the film. The music director comes from a
family of modest means and has risen from being a relative unknown to a
leading name in the Indian film industry. His story is one of personal
triumph, too.

I guess the final message of Slumdog Millionaire is something we heard
echo across the nation last year: Yes, we can. And it's no wonder the film
took the top honors at the Oscars.

I say jai ho to that. Enjoy your time at the movies.

I'll love to work with Rahman: Jaisalmer's 'Mozart'
http://www.ptinews.com/pti%5Cptisite.nsf/0/4F8DE45399566C8F6525756C002C086B?OpenDocument

  Zafri Mudasser Nofil
Jaisalmer, Mar 1 (PTI) Call him the Mozart of Jaisalmer or even this desert
city's Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his music has all the elements that will
certainly not let you down.

Be it belting famous folk songs like 'Nimbooda', 'Mast qalandar', 'Phadharo
mhare des' and 'Holiya mein ure re gulal' or composing a symphony, Gazi Khan
Barna is quite as ease.

Khan and his troupe use diverse instruments like 'algoza' (an indigenous
flute), 'khartaal' (a percussion instrument made of wood) and 'morchang'
(mouth organ) besides harmonium, sarangi and dholak to create pulsating
music in the inhospitable desert terrain.

Khan has to credit 100 performances aboard. And now he wants to have some
collaborative associations with the country's top musicians including
Oscar-winning A R Rahman.

I will love to work with A R Rahman, he says.

But the charismatic singer has one regret not much is known in India about
the Manganiars, the singing community from western Rajasthan to which he
belong.

Though I have performed at several platforms, our form of music is not as
popular in other parts of the country as it should have been, Khan told PTI
here.

In Rajasthan, Manganiyars are invited to perform in social and family
gatherings and festivals. PTI

[arr] After 'Slumdog Millionaire' US critics warm up to 'Delhi-6'

2009-03-01 Thread Vithur
After 'Slumdog Millionaire' US critics warm up to 'Delhi-6'

*By Arun Kumar, Washington, March 1 : After the runaway success of
Mumbai-set Slumdog Millionaire, US critics are waking up to Bollywood,
especially the musichttp://www.newkerala.com/topstory-fullnews-102300.html#of
Oscar winner A.R. Rahman, whose latest composition for the Abhishek
Bachchan starrer Delhi-6 is also being appreciated.*

Los Angeles Times really liked Delhi-6. So did Village Voice in New
York City and the site worldfilm.about.com, which reviews world cinema also
gave it a big thumbs up.

Delhi-6 also opened well at the US box office over Oscar weekend and had
the third highest per-theatre average for any film in the Top 25.

It was probably the first time a father-daughter team from Bollywood had
their own separate movies in the US Top 25 at the same time. Anil
Kapoorhttp://www.newkerala.com/topstory-fullnews-102300.html#has
Slumdog Millionaire and Sonam Kapoor is in Delhi-6.

Anchored by a fascinating score from Oscar winner A.R. Rahman ('Slumdog
Millionaire'), naturalistic performances and a wide cinematic palette,
'Delhi-6' is a fair introduction to Indian cinema for outsiders - who will
have no clue at times why the audience is laughing, said LA Times critic
Michael Ordoña.

The songs http://www.newkerala.com/topstory-fullnews-102300.html# and
score are memorable, and director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra has a deep bag of
cinematic tricks to illuminate the distinct patterns, such as
flightshttp://www.newkerala.com/topstory-fullnews-102300.html#into
Hindu mythology or a dream sequence blending New York and Delhi, he
added.

The movie site about.com said: Maybe the runaway success of 'Slumdog
Millionaire' will inspire Western audiences to sample more authentic
Bollywood fare. With its first-rate music, world-class stars, and
postcard-ready views of India (not to mention the relatively reasonable
running time), 'Delhi-6' presents an especially welcoming option.

To villagevoice.com, the movie represents the enigmatic India of today.

Critic Michelle Orange said while 'Delhi-6' attempts to address the
generational, economic, and religious problems dividing modern India, it
does so in an unapologetically broad, whacked-out way, with each of
Bollywood's four food groups (corn, cheese, treacle and nuts) present and
accounted for.

Which is to say, of course, that it's pretty much irresistible and, in that
sense, represents the enigmatic India of today as well as anything ever
could.

The composer arrived at the Ameen Peer Dargah in Kadapa, 405km
southwest of Hyderabad, to pray at the Hazrat Khwaja Syed Shah
Ameenullah Malik Urs on its third and last day.

After the special Friday prayers, the tahleel fateha, he told
reporters he never missed Urs at the shrine since he had sought
spiritual guidance from the Peer throughout his life, on personal
and professional matters. “I believe I was able to win the Oscars
only because of the blessings of the Almighty and the Peer of Ameen

Rahman — who wore a white pyjama, red kurta and the traditional

with his family joining him.

in to do the music.

I don't know how the market will react to this new combo after the stupendous
success of ARR - AR Murugadoss in ghajini. It is bad for the trade to

[arr] The Slumdog debate is a stink of a different kind [SEMI ARR]

The Slumdog debate is a stink of a different kind

 Farwa Imam Ali
http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/searchresult.aspx?AliasName=SJiqCInGvNVym5sHMssKEw==
First Published : 01 Mar 2009 10:13:00 AM IST
Last Updated : 28 Feb 2009 10:45:17 AM IST

Rahman wins two Oscars, a Golden Globe, bags a BAFTA and sends more desis to
watch Slumdog Millionaire. High on the Jai Ho spirit, a friend’s husband
buys wife dearest tickets to Slumdog Millionaire for her birthday. Wife goes
to the movies but returns home upset about how India has been portrayed.
Husband defends right to creative enterprise. Both of them fight. Patriotism
is defined in terms I have never heard of before. Two days later both stick
to their opinions, but make up. Happy ending, true filmy style.

With Rahman’s big win for India at the Oscars, perhaps the drama surrounding
what I think is just another melodrama called Slumdog Millionaire will
abate. Techies in LA believe that few would have cared had the film not won
critical acclaim, whatever that means! What did they think about the film?
Sure they squirmed at the raw depiction of poverty in Mumbai’s underbelly,
but agreed that the film simply depicts an existing reality.

So the point is, maybe we are more upset the film is more fact than fiction.
And maybe one would have felt less upset had an Indian made the film. As
some Silicon Valley desis pointed out, the writer of the book that became
the movie, Vikas Swarup, is Indian. Is it the Raj hangover that perhaps
causes us to be upset that an Englishman portrayed a realistic slice of our
life? Or is it guilt on our parts that the world sees the inequities that
exist in a supposedly shining India?

Make no mistake, I love my country potholes, corruption hell holes and all,
Oscar or no Oscar. But the Slumdog debate creates a stink of a different
kind. One of low tolerance for things harsh and real. Appears to me that
some of us would rather see the happy-ending movies with crappy humor and
not be reminded of the graver issues that exist. Are we upset that the film
does not provide yet another entertaining escape from the travails of our
daily life? Perhaps.

But over and above, I think we miss the point sometimes. As a group of Sili
Valley families watching the Oscars observed, the sheer “kuch bhi karega”
attitude that is so very Indian shines beautifully in the film. It is the
attitude that is embodied in the spirit of every Indian who is trying to
make the best of the cards life has dealt us. Made me think they were
drawing parallels from their personal travails.

Exactly what then, does Silicon Valley see in Slumdog? They see themselves.
They see the sheer spunk of Jamal who does whatever it takes to realise even
the most impossible dream. Not all the folks who realise their dreams are
lucky enough to have family and finances in their favour. Yet they
persevere. It is the story of perseverance that unites Jamal’s character
with some Sili Valley folks.

As for the poverty, the desis point out, it exists everywhere. Even in
America. Back in Boyle’s own Britain. Everywhere. It differs in perspective
and degree. But it exists everywhere. In India we call call them beggars or
bhikari. The West call them homeless. I don’t know what they call them in
Danny Boyle’s country, but I bet the underlying concept and the ignominy
attached to it is the same as it is in India.

To its merit, Slumdog is not patronising about the India scape. It sees what
is, and shows as is. And who are those protesting? The ones that spend
more movie
ticketshttp://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=The+Slumdog+debate+is+a+stink+of+a+different+kindartid=7INRJJrOMkE=Title=The+Slumdog+debate+is+a+stink+of+a+different+kindSectionID=f4OberbKin4=MainSectionID=f4OberbKin4=SEO=slumdogSectionName=cxWvYpmNp4fBHAeKn3LcnQ==#than
the average slum kid does on candy for a decade? Like one desi techie
who is returning to India put it, “Boyle or no Boyle. Oscar or not. I love
my country, slums and all.” Now that’s the spirit that warrants a shout out.
Jai Ho!

Have anyone of you seen A Wednesday? is there any scope for songs? From
what i see, the movie is like a thriller and wont have scope for songs,
but will have great scope for BGMs.

I guess it will be by ARR, if this movie's time has been replaced by
 Marmayogi...

while i'm happy that Rahman won the award for JTYJN, i'm sad that the music
of Yuvraj was overlooked. it was not even nominated (sigh!)

i agree the movie was a boxoffice disaster, but that doesn't make the music
any bad. IMHO some of the songs of Yuvraj had that never before heard
feel. Again these songs jelled well with the backdrop of the movie and
cannot be fit into any other movie.

A year ago, if someone asked me who I thought would the best score a
year from now, I would have guessed either JA, Yuvvraaj, or Ghajini,
simply based on the hype and expectations for what was to come in 2008
at that time. I knew Jaane Tu would be releasing too, but didn't
expect the score to have such a huge impact as it actually had. To
me, it was a real surprise and treat to see Jaane Tu score so high. I
knew it would be good coming from Rahman's stable, but not as
successful as it has been. Anyway, a very deserving album for best
score based on popularity, although my vote for best score goes to
either Yuvvraaj or JA (a tie).

Can we please stop this? Our reactions are way against AR's great
humility. He is so calm and composed, gives due respect to senior

[arr] A new mantra for life to be good

2009-03-01 Thread rayrai2k
when it all started my day would begin with Bharat humko jaanse pyaara

going to be a follower of somebody and it did. I started collecting
any little details about him, never stopped doing researches.
unknowingly I developed a new interest in music and sound. with
computers and synthesizers occupying my desks I started getting a feel
I am seeing sound, yes the sound from only one. I started learning
keyboard very seriously and more seriously exploring sounds. He became
my GURU. following him became my habit. He was a distant star to
reach. So I started living the way he did, right from wearing black
dress. needless to say by now whom I had been writing so far, yet my
day would never be complete if I dont say his name at least once A R
RAHMAN.
After Bharat humko for years the next mantra was Vande Mataram, Then
the following years I had
Only you
Tujko kya darr hain re
Sarfaroshi ki tamanna, Pagadi sambhaal jatta and Des mere Des mere for
years till Azaadi and Khoon chala...Yeh jo Des hain tera. Jai Ho
These days I have promised to myself to adapt a new mantra and thats
in the choice between Love and hatred, I will always opt for Love
There by I come close to my idol in the moral world and will love to
see the world that's filled with peace every where.
If you are happy lets join and spread the message by adapting it to
ourselves first which will influence others. Its not a dream that's

The best part is when resul pookutty chanted OM and expressed its
significance to the audience watching oscars all over the whole world. So,
Illayaraja is absolutely right in saying his father's blessings brought
 him
 the oscar.

It will be amazing if both the living legends can come together and

A senior person (artist or human being) should earn his respect by virtue
of his behavior, speech, and wisdom.
By stating not outstanding deliberately to an OSCAR winner is not only
insulting the winner, but also insulting the Oscar institution.

Nobody is making merry here fans are irritated by shameless comments of

[arr] Let's keep in mind the attitudes and exposure of the elders

2009-03-01 Thread Chord
After reading Jagjit Singh's, Pyarelal's and Ali Khan's comments about
ARR and his music, it also struck me the big generational differences
in terms of attitudes and exposure towards music. Personally, I have
found that even with people I know, like my parents and their friends,
their appreciation for music is within a narrow range. Anything
outside that range is overlooked and not appreciated as much, and
sometimes ridiculed. I have found that amongst many elders, there is
a certain arrogance or haughtiness implying, we know what's best.
This is a product of our culture revering elders and their wisdom by
tradition in contrast to many seniors and elders feeling left out and
disrespected by attitudinal changes in today's world reflecting less
respect and reverie towards seniors.

For example, when I gave my parents a copy of the D6 CD, they only
liked the folk and semi-classical elements of the soundtrack. That's
it. When I asked them about Jaane Tu, they said that they didn't like
the music, although they love and appreciate ARR's other works that
are more in line with their taste. Of course, even within elders,
there will be a lot of variation in terms of taste and attitude, but
overall, I feel that they are more narrow minded about music than we
youngsters are OVERALL AS A GROUP, keeping in mind individual
differences. Because ARR's music is so diverse and touching upon so
many different genres, a large percentage of his work is not going to
be appreciated by those with more narrow minded definitions of good
music.

Who knows, maybe when we reach that age, we too may reflect some of
that narrow mindedness in terms of our exposure compared to what the
youth may be listening to at that time. However, I have hope that
because we youngsters have been exposed to such an array of world
music through ARR and other artists, I think we will generally have a
broader appreciation for music than previous generations.

ARR has gifted us with something very important: tolerance and open
mindedness for different types of music. Thank you ARR!

yes, I agree that arr fans basic trait is politeness. If we didn't learn
this from our idol, then there is something lacking in our love for our
idol.

We can express our views WITHOUT insulting the people.

Pyarelal is a very senior person. He had given great music for decades.
I think, at one time he has held the record of having composed the
highest no. of songs in Hindi films and several were hits,
super-duper-bumper-smash hits. He himself has won several awards and
rightly so.

See guys, the simpler truth with most of the ex-celebrities is that age
gets the better of them. They are not able to reconcile with the vacuum
that comes after years and decades of being the center of attention,
having had lacs of fans. So, sometimes what they say is a vent of their
frustration. They don't mean to insult anybody, it is just that they end
up speaking out harsh words as comes with senior age.

[arr] Re: Collaboration between AR Rahman Illayaraja

First of all Shekhar is a Sanskrit word

Shekhar literally means peak but contextually it is part of the name
Chandra - Shekhar which refers to Lord shiva who has the crescent moon

It is kind of like poetry interpretation. You have to look beyond the
literal meaning of the word and that was what happened here

[arr] [Semi-ARR] - Our awards, their awards

2009-03-01 Thread Anil Nair
A wonderful article on the significance of Oscars, Filmfare etc ...
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1090301/jsp/7days/story_10606930.jsp

Our awards, their awards
celebrity circusBHARATHI S. PRADHAN

'ONE OSCAR IS EQUAL TO 100 FILMFARE TROPHIES'

Anyone who watched the Oscars this Monday would’ve wondered just what it is
that makes the Academy Awards such a coveted event and why an Indian award
comes off as such a pathetic country cousin.

The reasons have nothing to do with being in awe of the West.

To begin with, we don’t really honour cinema. We worship stars, dynasties
and the sponsors. If Resul Pookutty had won a trophy for Best Sound Mixing
at any of our awards functions, we’d have never heard the sound of his
voice. Our functions are so star-oriented that we don’t respect or honour
any other department of filmmaking. There is a time-honoured tradition here
that all ‘unimportant’ awards (read, technical awards) are dispensed with
earlier in the evening and no winner is accorded the respect of a few
seconds before the mike. The ‘important’ celebrity awards are then bunched
together to make the finale where glittering stars and famous filmmakers are
allowed one-upmanship and rambling before the mike because that’s what the
channels think is the sure-fire formula for high viewership.

A few years ago, when I was heading an awards show and had meetings with a
reputed channel, all they wanted was a list of film star items (they
couldn’t care less what the performance would be about) and who’d constitute
the celebrity audience. There was no discussion on what kind of aesthetics
or talent would be on display and certainly no room for anything that
departed from their famous formula. A *Jai ho *with unknown dancers and a
black American singing would have been out of the question. If A.R. Rahman
had not been a part of it, our channel heads would’ve collectively shaken
their heads and yawned, but who’s the star performer in this item?

Today, of course, we have degenerated even further. One peep at the audience
and you know who’ll be the Best Actor or Best Actress of the evening. No
Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie or Meryl Streep would sit in the front row and go
home empty-handed in Mumbai. That’s the difference between the Oscars and
our awards functions which revolve solely around pleasing the sponsors and
TV channels. In any case, once the sponsors get centre-stage, as they
uniformly do at all our functions, the whole event turns too crassly
commercial to make it classy.

‘Classy’, was what Resul Pookutty and A.R. Rahman were, that night at the
Oscars. When Resul talked of a nationalistic ‘Om’ and Rahman talked of a
universal ‘God’, they did the country proud. There was no narrow-thinking
‘cheer me, cheer my religion’, no*Jai Mata Di, *no Allah, no Mother Mary —
it was a stylishly secular, universally-accepted ‘God’ (or *‘kadavul’* as
Rahman said in Tamil). Similarly, there was no parochial Kerala or Chennai,
there was no ‘pat us, we’re both south Indians’ — they were simply two
sincere, immensely deserving Indians who were thrilled to bring home to this
country a token of the international recognition they had received. Thank
you, Resul, thank you, Rahman. You did us proud in more ways than you think.

Question being asked: What’s Anil Kapoor going to do once he returns to
terra firma? Unfair, really. Why can’t he bask in the sun for a while? For
one, he has reason to rejoice — Anil’s pockets get filled with every victory
that *Slumdog Millionaire* notches up, since he was astute enough to accept
a modest fee and a small percentage of the profits. With the kind of
business the film has done all over the globe, even a small percentage works
out to a big grin on the quiz master’s face. The profits apart, let Anil
make the most of this short-lived stint in the international spotlight. Next
year, this time, he just might be like Shilpa Shetty in UK today — forgotten
as yesterday’s headlines.

In the glare of the Oscar fever, it surfaced that *Jai ho* was actually a
Subhash Ghai number but he’d handed it back to A.R. Rahman as ‘unsuitable
for *Yuvvraaj*’. Lucky Boyle picked it up as the perfect ending for *Slumdog
Millionaire*. Does Subhash Ghai feel a twinge of regret for foregoing a song
that went on to win international approval? “I’m not like others, you know,”
says Ghai. “I’m a very giving sort of person. I am genuinely very happy for
Rahman. He’s my composer, my friend. One has to forego even a great song
sometimes if it doesn’t fit into your film. And *Jai ho* is a great song
that didn’t fit into *Yuvvraaj*. Rahman is the best and he proved it by
getting an Oscar. After all, one Oscar is equal to 100 Filmfare trophies!”
Ah, just the sentiments expressed at the beginning of this column.
