or even Anu Malik. But there is something about them which attracts
people, and they love AR too, but are more into the former. So at the
end of the day, its all about personal choices. And a majority of
youngsters in my college love AR and seem to connect with his music
instantly, but it varies with every album. They loved 'Jaane tu' more
than JA, but for me it's vice-versa.

[arr] Music labels rush to cash in on Rahman's triumph

2009-03-02 Thread Bivin Chandra

MUMBAI: After A R Rahman brought home twin Oscars, music labels in India are
leaving no stone unturned to cash in on the Rahman fever. T-Series has already
launched a Rahman compilation last week. Others like Sony BMG, Saregama are
working on similar lines and are planning early March launches for similar
compilations.

T-Series launched a three CD set two days before the Oscar awards and the album
has been well received by music lovers. Says T-Series president - marketing
media publishing (TV) Vinod Bhanushali, “The album tracks Rahman’s journey from
Roja to Slumdog Millionaire as we own many of his titles like 1947 earth,
Nayak, Doli sajake rakhna, and the recent titles acquired in the last two
years- Yuvvraaj, Jaane tu ya jaane na, Ghajini and Delhi 6.”

The label promoted the set across all television channels; and aired an
interesting 90 second promo across all music and news channels.

Sony BMG, on the other hand, is in talks with major music labels including
Saregama, Times Music, Venus Records etc to acquire music rights of Rahman’s
titles. Sony BMG would be tentatively be launching a compilation of Rahman’s
hits in March.

Sony BMG Marketing director Sanujeet Bhujabal says, “We are looking at most of
his landmark works including songs from his Tamil soundtracks. Our compilation
would include Rahman songs across Bollywood, Tamil numbers, albums etc. We
already have some five to six Tamil titles which would be a part of the
compilation.”

A R Rahman and Sony BMG have been associated with his first album ‘Vande
Mataram’. “We have been doing A R Rahman collections/compilations since the
past couple of years for his fans. We feel it gives a nice platform to showcase
AR Rahman’s range of music to all his fans worldwide,” says Bhujabal.

Venus, which already has three earlier Rahman compilations in the market would
be giving out their title track of ‘Dil se’ to Sony BMG, which is also in talks
with Times Music for the rights of Rahman’s ‘Jana gana mana’, the only Rahman
title with that label. Sony BMG is also obtaining the rights of ‘Saathiya’ and
‘Sapnay’ from Saregama.

Saregama would also be launching a compilation by 10 March by buying rights
from other music labels like Sony BMG, Venus, Universal etc.

Saregama head, New Media and Publishing Gautam Sarakar denies that the label is
trying to cash in on the slumdog ...

Re: [arr] Let's keep in mind the attitudes and exposure of the elders

2009-03-02 Thread Mugilan Jeyaraman
Good Thoughts Chord. I completely agree.

However, I guess, I have been really lucky in this regard :)

The biggest ARR fan and the closest to me is my dad. He brought a Tape
Recorder during the time Genteman was released. That was my first ever
cassette. He bought it after he liked the songs.

However, the next cassette we bought was Kizhaku Cheemayilae and it was on
the day of the audio release. He brought it home with a lot of excitement I
still clearly remember. With the song on side A starting Athaiku
piranthavalae, I remember the smiling approvals we gave each other :)

We still treasure all those audio cassettes. Infact for most of them, I can
recollect the day we had bought it and the initial feedback we shared.

During my school days, it was always my dad who tracked the audio release
dates and kept coming home with the 1st day release cassettes. After I moved
to chennai, I slowly took over, thanks to the Internet and arrahmanfans.com:)

He still listens to most of his music. He loved Chinnamma
Chillakama(Meenaxi). He loved O Saya from Slumdog!

No Surprise, the first person I called after ARR won the oscars was my Dad.
He was at his school. He is a teacher. Luckily he was in a break so I didnt
have to wait to share the news :)

Sorry abt a long mail. Somehow, whatever Chord shared, made me nostalgic
about all the good times :) Thanks for reading.

Regards,
Mugilan.

[arr] New Tamil Anthem by the 'Oscar Tamilian'!

A R Rahman, now popularly known in the state as the 'Oscar Tamilan' is all set

Lyricist Vairamuthu said recently at an audio launch, I will be writing the
lyrics for the new Tamil anthem, which is an invocation and will reach out to
all the Tamils around the globe. The music for the anthem will be composed by
the double Oscar winner A.R.Rahman!

A.R.Rahman's first composition 'Chinna Chinna Aasai...' for the movie Roja was
written by Vairamuthu, which had fetched both of them a national award.

According to the lyricist, Tamilians living in foreign countries will have
their own Tamil anthem just like our present anthem 'Neerarum Kadaludttha Nila
Madanthai'.

It was written by famous poet Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai and based on the
landscapes and boundaries of erstwhile Tamil Nadu. The need for a new anthem
was brought to notice when Vairamuthu and A.R.Rahman attended a function
together in Malaysia and sang the Tamil anthem in their own.

Speaking about the glorious moment when Rahman bagged the Oscar and ended his
winning speech in Tamil, Vairamuthu said, Rahman's passion for his mother
tongue was evident when he addressed an elite gathering in Tamil. Also, at a
time when Tamil has been declared as a classic language by the Centre, I felt
proud that Rahman chose to speak Tamil at an international stage.

A couple of days before, AR Rahman had also confirmed what Vairamuthu said in
the function. He said, I will compose music for the new Tamil Anthem once
Vairamuthu completes his work..

Who's AR Rahman?

It is quite amusing to see how geo- political differences can influence the
coverage of events

that have cultural acceptability across borders. KUNAL MAJUMDAR scans Dawn and
The News of

Pakistan, and The Daily Star and The New Age of Bangladesh in search of two
words ‘AR Rahman’

and ‘Oscars’.

Posted Sunday, Mar 01 15:59:04, 2009

While the Indian media went overboard with the coverage of Oscars, the
Pakistani media tried

its best to ignore the Indian connection. The leading newspaper Dawn has no
mention of AR

Rahman’s win. In its lead article – ‘Slumdog scoops eight of its ten
nominations’ (23 Feb,

2009); it does mention that the movie is based in Mumbai and gives brief
outline of the story.

Beyond that, it simply ignores the Indians who won the Oscars. A feeling that
Dawn

intentionally wanted to stress on the poverty angle of the story comes with the
accompanying

articles and photographs of slum kids.

The News, of the Jang Group, was no different. The article -- ‘Slumdog
Millionaire’ wins Oscar

gold at 81’st Academy Awards (February 24, 2009) tells the readers that Slumdog
is small-budget

British movie on “A ragtag group of Indian orphans”. The writer mentions how
the cast and the

crew of the movie was present to accept the best film award, which included
“several school

children who were plucked from Mumbai’s shantytowns to appear in the movie”.
AR Rahman again

ignored!

The Daily Times also ignores the Indian winners. However, it has a more
sympathetic approach.

It quotes Danny Boyle offering gratitude to Mumbaikars and saying they even,
“dwarf even this

guy (Oscar statue)”. The newspaper is the only one to carry a photograph of
the cast and crew

of the film, where you can see Anil Kapoor, AR Rahman and Rasul Pookuthy.

One wonders how many Pakistanis actually know about Penelope Cruz and Hugh
Jackman, compared to

AR Rahman!

Bangladeshi awareness

Bangladeshi newspapers seem to be much more aware about the Indians in the
movie. In an article

– Oscar Glory for ‘Slumdog’(February 24, 2009), The Daily Star mentions AR
Rahman’s win quite

prominently. The newspaper calls Slumdog Millionaire a “feel-good film about a
Mumbai tea boy

who rises from poverty and enters a television quiz show to win millions and
find the love of

his life”. Quite a contrast to Pakistani media’s definition. It goes on to
mention that in

spite of being directed and produced by Englishmen, many Indians claim it to be
their own. A

very just portray of the debate in India on the movie. The article also
mentions about Resul

Pookutty and the best documentary – Smile Pinki. Photographs alongside have AR
Rahman with his

two Oscar statues.

‘AR Rahman wins Golden Globe’ was the front-page story on The New Age (February
24, 2009). The

newspaper used Reuter’s input and made Rahman’s win the peg of the story. The
writer spoke

about the versatility of Rahman’s music and his other achievements. While
other western actors

and films did get a mention, but it didn’t dominate the story unlike the
Pakistani coverage.

It is quite amusing to find how geo- political differences can influence the
coverage of events

that have cultural acceptability across borders.

[arr] Simbu to sing for AR Rahman!

2009-03-02 Thread Bivin Chandra

'Little Superstar' Silambarasan will be singing a couple of songs for the
movie, 'Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaayaa', to the tunes set by Oscar winner AR Rahman,
it is reported. The shooting for the film, directed by Gautham Menon, is
progressing at a brisk pace at locations in the US and Tamil Nadu.

Simbu, a multi-faceted talent, is a good actor, dancer, choreographer and
director. 'Vallavan', a film he hasdirected, was a big hit at the B.O.

Our sources say that Simbu has been assisting Goutham in direction too, thus
making most of the opportunity to work with the master. Trisha plays the
heroine in the movie.

2009-03-02 Thread Srini Santhanam
My dad's a big fan of Rahman... Its accept he does relish the youthful
- JTYJN kinda music..

- I remember when Duet released, he off the blue went and got a Sony
Hi Fi system by himself and said Rahman's music deserves to be
listened to in a high quality system (well, thats the best we could
afford manage in short time).
- To this day - he loves listening to Guru in shuffle mode and his
ringtone is from ATM.
- When Sangamam released, he used to tell me that the MSV rendition
of 'Mazhai thuli' song was written by MSV himself and he wanted to
praise Rahman through the song.. His views :)

- He was the first to call me and wish me when AR won the oscars.
- Last saturday, when the CNN IBN interview was going on, he called me
over phone to remind me and said, 'Rahman is a Genius!' and signed off
with 'Jai HO'.. it gave me goosebumps.

Good Thoughts Chord. I completely agree.

However, I guess, I have been really lucky in this regard :)

The biggest ARR fan and the closest to me is my dad. He brought a
Tape Recorder during the time Genteman was released. That was my
first ever cassette. He bought it after he liked the songs.

However, the next cassette we bought was Kizhaku Cheemayilae and it
was on the day of the audio release. He brought it home with a lot
of excitement I still clearly remember. With the song on side A
starting Athaiku piranthavalae, I remember the smiling approvals
we gave each other :)

We still treasure all those audio cassettes. Infact for most of
them, I can recollect the day we had bought it and the initial
feedback we shared.

During my school days, it was always my dad who tracked the audio
release dates and kept coming home with the 1st day release
cassettes. After I moved to chennai, I slowly took over, thanks to
the Internet and arrahmanfans.com :)

He still listens to most of his music. He loved Chinnamma
Chillakama(Meenaxi). He loved O Saya from Slumdog!

No Surprise, the first person I called after ARR won the oscars was
my Dad. He was at his school. He is a teacher. Luckily he was in a
break so I didnt have to wait to share the news :)

Sorry abt a long mail. Somehow, whatever Chord shared, made me
nostalgic about all the good times :) Thanks for reading.

After reading Jagjit Singh's, Pyarelal's and Ali Khan's comments about
ARR and his music, it also struck me the big generational differences
in terms of attitudes and exposure towards music. Personally, I have
found that even with people I know, like my parents and their friends,
their appreciation for music is within a narrow range. Anything
outside that range is overlooked and not appreciated as much, and
sometimes ridiculed. I have found that amongst many elders, there is
a certain arrogance or haughtiness implying, we know what's best.
This is a product of our culture revering elders and their wisdom by
tradition in contrast to many seniors and elders feeling left out and
disrespected by attitudinal changes in today's world reflecting less
respect and reverie towards seniors.

For example, when I gave my parents a copy of the D6 CD, they only
liked the folk and semi-classical elements of the soundtrack. That's
it. When I asked them about Jaane Tu, they said that they didn't like
the music, although they love and appreciate ARR's other works that
are more in line with their taste. Of course, even within elders,
there will be a lot of variation in terms of taste and attitude, but
overall, I feel that they are more narrow minded about music than we
youngsters are OVERALL AS A GROUP, keeping in mind individual
differences. Because ARR's music is so diverse and touching upon so
many different genres, a large percentage of his work is not going to
be appreciated by those with more narrow minded definitions of good
music.

Who knows, maybe when we reach that age, we too may reflect some of
that narrow mindedness in terms of our exposure compared to what the
youth may be listening to at that time. However, I have hope that
because we youngsters have been exposed to such an array of world
music through ARR and other artists, I think we will generally have a
broader appreciation for music than previous generations.

ARR has gifted us with something very important: tolerance and open
mindedness for different types of music. Thank you ARR!

March 02, 2009

Musiciansof the film
industry showed their
solidarity in felicitating the Oscar
award winner A.R. Rahman. The event
took place at the Cine Musicians
Auditorium on March 1st at 6 pm.
On winning the coveted award, Rahman
said, It's the aspiration
of all (the musicians)... God selected
me to collect the award on their
behalf.

The music director said that the
seeds for his success were sown
by his parents. He once again repeated
his famous quote: Ella pugazhum
iraivanuke (All Glory to the Almighty).
  [Illayaraja]

Speaking of his experience in composing
the music for Danny Boyle's Slumdog
Millionaire, Rahman said that he completed
composing music for the film within three
weeks. Rahman stated that though he wondered
why some great Indian talents did not make
it to the Oscar he realized later that they
did not require such an award.

While maestro Illayaraja presented Rahman
with a gold chain, Harris Jeyaraj gifted
him a gold ring. Veteran director K Balachander
said Rahman is a rare genius. When
other music composers make castles with
their music, Rahman builds monuments.
Incidentally, Rahman's debut venture
Roja was produced by Balachander's
home production. Those who took part in

Given how seniors mostly go for the slow, semi classical, traditional
types of melodies and songs (mostly ethnic Indian), here is a list of
songs that you could possibly gift to an elder as a compilation in any
way shape or form. ARR has lots of songs that the older generation
would love, but may not have heard.

Sarfarosh Ki Tamanna
Main Vari Vari
Desh Ki Mitti
Ay Hairathe Aashiqui
All songs from Sangamam
Pookalam from Thenali
O Paalanhare
Dola Dola
En Swasa Katre title song
Hum Hai Iss Pal Yahaan
Milo Wahaan Wahaan
Zindagi
Muskura
Naina Milaike
Piya Ho
Innisai from Godfather
Naina Neer
E Ajnabi
Sahaara (slow)
Taal Se Taal Mila
Kanna Muchi
Yenna Solla Pogirai
Allai Payuthey title song
Radha Kaise Na Jale
Kehta Ye Dil
Ishwar Allah
Kismat Se Tum
Jaari Ja
Tu Hi Re
Dheeme Dheeme
Saiyaan (Zubeida)
Mehndi Hai Rachnewali
Rang De Basanti Chola
Ghoomparani
Ekla Chalo Re
Pal Pal Bhaari
Man Mohanna
Jashne Bahaar
Mere Maula
Bhor Bhaye
Tere Bina

There are more, but I can think of these for now.

[arr] When music felicitated Rahman

2009-03-02 Thread Bivin Chandra

It was a rare occasion on Sunday as musicians from across Kollywood gathered to
felicitate music director A R Rahman for having won the Oscars,

TOP HONOURS: Musicians wishing Oscar winner A R Rahman
the Bafta and the Golden Globe.

It was a sight to behold as almost all the legendary music composers gathered
on stage at the Cine Musicians Union auditorium to praise the man of the
moment, even as a packed auditorium cheered lustily almost everytime his name
was mentioned.
The first to bless the young achiever was veteran Carnatic singer and music
director Balamuralikrishna. “I shouldn’t praise him too much, as a father
should praise his son only in his heart,” he said. He was followed by Producer
AVM Saravanan, who showered praises on Rahman.
However, Saravanan also made use of the opportunity to point out that the
Indian government hadn’t honoured veteran musicians like M S Viswanathan, who
had been contributing to Kollywood for the last 70 years, and lyricist Vaali,
who had been penning lyrics for the last 50 years.
“I don’t know why they haven’t been honoured. I believe there is a committee to
look into it. I’d like to use this opportunity to draw the attention of those
concerned to this issue,” he said.

Maestro Ilayaraja, who spoke on the occasion, said, “Even if they place a
golden crown on Rahman’s head (and he deserves it too) in a function, it would
still not match this evening.”

“Not all buds bloom and not all those that bloom become fruits. Similarly, not
all the movies go to the Oscars and not all that go get selected. Only a select
few get selected. This does not mean that those that have not been selected are
inferior,” he said.

“Awards have no value without composers. But for the first time, a person from
here has gone to the west and commanded the honour. We need to honour that,” he
said, to loud cheers. The veteran music director also gifted a gold chain on
the occasion to A R Rahman.
But the best description of the function came from veteran singer S Janaki, who
said, “Today, music has felicitated Rahman.”
In his acceptance speech, Rahman started off with his famous phrase — Ella
Pughazhum Irraivanukke. Rahman said that his parents had sown the seeds and
that he had only reaped the harvest. “It’s the aspiration of all the
musicians... I think God selected me to collect the award on their behalf,” he
added.

Others who spoke on the occasion included director K Balachandar, music
directors M S Viswananthan, Harris Jayaraj, Vidyasagar, Yuvan Shankar Raja,
Bharadwaj and Shankar Ganesh.

ARR gave an interview to SUN TV (i guess during the release of Bombay) on a
Pongal day. At the end of that interview, they asked ARR to compose a musical
bit for the Pongal Occasion. Even though i heard that only one time, i was
really hooked into that great composition by ARR. I guess the Tavil was played
by a famous person (Pazhanichamy? ??).

Just hear the fusion of Nadaswaram and Tavil. Just over a minute.. but...
WOW...

I searched for that in youtube and found it Kept on listening it today for

Our awards, their awards
celebrity circus
BHARATHI S. PRADHAN

'ONE OSCAR IS EQUAL TO 100 FILMFARE TROPHIES'Anyone who watched the Oscars this
Monday would’ve wondered just what it is that makes the Academy Awards such a
coveted event and why an Indian award comes off as such a pathetic country
cousin.
The reasons have nothing to do with being in awe of the West.
To begin with, we don’t really honour cinema. We worship stars, dynasties and
the sponsors. If Resul Pookutty had won a trophy for Best Sound Mixing at any
of our awards functions, we’d have never heard the sound of his voice. Our
functions are so star-oriented that we don’t respect or honour any other
department of filmmaking. There is a time-honoured tradition here that all
‘unimportant’ awards (read, technical awards) are dispensed with earlier in the
evening and no winner is accorded the respect of a few seconds before the mike.
The ‘important’ celebrity awards are then bunched together to make the finale
where glittering stars and famous filmmakers are allowed one-upmanship and
rambling before the mike because that’s what the channels think is the
sure-fire formula for high viewership.
A few years ago, when I was heading an awards show and had meetings with a
reputed channel, all they wanted was a list of film star items (they couldn’t
care less what the performance would be about) and who’d constitute the
celebrity audience. There was no discussion on what kind of aesthetics or
talent would be on display and certainly no room for anything that departed
from their famous formula. A Jai ho with unknown dancers and a black American
singing would have been out of the question. If A.R. Rahman had not been a part
of it, our channel heads would’ve collectively shaken their heads and yawned,
but who’s the star performer in this item?
Today, of course, we have degenerated even further. One peep at the audience
and you know who’ll be the Best Actor or Best Actress of the evening. No Brad
Pitt, Angelina Jolie or Meryl Streep would sit in the front row and go home
empty-handed in Mumbai. That’s the difference between the Oscars and our awards
functions which revolve solely around pleasing the sponsors and TV channels. In
any case, once the sponsors get centre-stage, as they uniformly do at all our
functions, the whole event turns too crassly commercial to make it classy.
‘Classy’, was what Resul Pookutty and A.R. Rahman were, that night at the
Oscars. When Resul talked of a nationalistic ‘Om’ and Rahman talked of a
universal ‘God’, they did the country proud. There was no narrow-thinking
‘cheer me, cheer my religion’, noJai Mata Di, no Allah, no Mother Mary — it was
a stylishly secular, universally- accepted ‘God’ (or ‘kadavul’ as Rahman said
in Tamil). Similarly, there was no parochial Kerala or Chennai, there was no
‘pat us, we’re both south Indians’ — they were simply two sincere, immensely
deserving Indians who were thrilled to bring home to this country a token of
the international recognition they had received. Thank you, Resul, thank you,
Rahman. You did us proud in more ways than you think.
Question being asked: What’s Anil Kapoor going to do once he returns to terra
firma? Unfair, really. Why can’t he bask in the sun for a while? For one, he
has reason to rejoice — Anil’s pockets get filled with every victory
that Slumdog Millionaire notches up, since he was astute enough to accept a
modest fee and a small percentage of the profits. With the kind of business the
film has done all over the globe, even a small percentage works out to a big
grin on the quiz master’s face. The profits apart, let Anil make the most of
this short-lived stint in the international spotlight. Next year, this time, he
just might be like Shilpa Shetty in UK today — forgotten as yesterday’s
headlines.
In the glare of the Oscar fever, it surfaced that Jai ho was actually a Subhash
Ghai number but he’d handed it back to A.R. Rahman as ‘unsuitable
for Yuvvraaj’. Lucky Boyle picked it up as the perfect ending for Slumdog
Millionaire. Does Subhash Ghai feel a twinge of regret for foregoing a song
that went on to win international approval? “I’m not like others, you know,”
says Ghai. “I’m a very giving sort of person. I am genuinely very happy for
Rahman. He’s my composer, my friend. One has to forego even a great song
sometimes if it doesn’t fit into your film. And Jai ho is a great song that
didn’t fit into Yuvvraaj. Rahman is the best and he proved it by getting an
Oscar. After all, one Oscar is equal to 100 Filmfare trophies!” Ah, just the
sentiments expressed at the

India are leaving no stone unturned to cash in on the Rahman fever.
T-Series has already launched a Rahman compilation last week. Others
like Sony BMG, Saregama are working on similar lines and are planning
early March launches for similar compilations.

T-Series launched a three CD set two days before the Oscar awards
and the album has been well received by music lovers. Says T-Series
president - marketing media publishing (TV) Vinod Bhanushali, “The
album tracks Rahman’s journey from Roja to Slumdog Millionaire as we
own many of his titles like 1947 earth, Nayak, Doli sajake rakhna, and
the recent titles acquired in the last two years- Yuvvraaj, Jaane tu

The label promoted the set across all television channels; and aired
an interesting 90 second promo across all music and news channels.

Sony BMG, on the other hand, is in talks with major music labels
including Saregama, Times Music, Venus Records etc to acquire music

launching a compilation of Rahman’s hits in March.

Sony BMG Marketing director Sanujeet Bhujabal says, “We are
looking at most of his landmark works including songs from his Tamil
soundtracks. Our compilation would include Rahman songs across
Bollywood, Tamil numbers, albums etc. We already have some five to six
Tamil titles which would be a part of the compilation.”

A R Rahman and Sony BMG have been associated with his first album
‘Vande Mataram’. “We have been doing A R Rahman
collections/compilations since the past couple of years for his fans.
We feel it gives a nice platform to showcase AR Rahman’s range of
music to all his fans worldwide,” says Bhujabal.

Venus, which already has three earlier Rahman compilations in the
market would be giving out their title track of ‘Dil se’ to Sony
BMG, which is also in talks with Times Music for the rights of
Rahman’s ‘Jana gana mana’, the only Rahman title with that
label. Sony BMG is also obtaining the rights of ‘Saathiya’ and
‘Sapnay’ from Saregama.

Saregama would also be launching a compilation by 10 March by buying
rights from other music labels like Sony BMG, Venus, Universal etc.

Saregama head, New Media and Publishing Gautam Sarakar denies that
the label is trying to cash in on the slumdog ...

ARR was wearing a Green Shirt (which was very common in all of his
interviews during those days) and it was in his Panchathan studio.
For the last 15 minutes of the interview, ARR was asked to compose
something for the Sun TV viewers on occasion of Pongal. It was the
first time (and last time i think) that ARR produced LIVE music .
Couple of Nadaswaram and Thavil people were there in his studio
and ARR gave them the swarams in verbal and asked them to play, and
he recorded them as they played (This was done 2-3 times after some
corrections) . He also gave notations to the Thavil person which was
awesome to watch. In the end, ARR mixed it completely and played it
for the viewers which was a TREAT to watch.

I am searching for the interview (SUN TV has the rights for it). In
those days there was no Internet or Youtube to get the interview next
day. I have recorded the same in a Audio cassette during those days.
Have to search it now.

This one is a real treat for all RAHMANIACS and a must have !!

 Thanks,

Honorary doctorates are usually conferred on politicians and film stars - a
practice that's often come in for criticism. Now this degree will be
conferred upon a musician for the soothing and healing touch his music
provides.

Chennai's Oscar winner will soon be called Dr. A.R.Rahman! Anna University
will confer the doctorate on the Mozart Of Madras in Media Sciences.

It's a great honour. I can now treat people!, was Rahman's first response
to this honour.

He has made us all proud. Reason enough for us to bestow this honour on
him, says Dr P Mannar Jawahar, Vice Chancellor, Anna University.

According to Surjit Singh Barnala, Governor, Tamil Nadu,He is from Chennai.
He's our Rahman. That's why all this celebration.

[arr] “50 per cent of the year I might be there (US), th e rest over here,” Rahman

2009-03-02 Thread Vithur
After winning two Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards, music composer A R
Rahman http://www.apunkachoice.com/celebrities/a_r_rahman/ is planning to
take up more projects in Hollywood.

However, that doesn’t mean that the Mozart of Madras is saying goodbye to
India. Rahman says he will now have to balance work in India with work in
the US.

“50 per cent of the year I might be there (US), the rest over here,” Rahman
recently told a tabloid.

The talented composer, who on Saturday won two Filmfare Awards for his
compositions in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and his background score in Jodhaa
Akbar http://www.apunkachoice.com/dyn/movies/hindi/jodhaa_akbar/ , says he
would have to say no to some projects in India to be able to take out time
to “stay put in the US”.

 http://www.addthis.com/bookmark.php

Now that Rahman has become a known face in the West, he wants to spend some
time in the US to be able to establish a base and make connections.

Meanwhile, back home in Chennai, Rahman was felicitated by Tamil Nadu
Governor Surjit Singh Barnala for having made India proud with his double
Oscar win.

[arr] They have people’s love, which is greater honor t han the Oscars.” - ARR

2009-03-02 Thread Vithur
*Rahman honored by colleagues* *By Moviebuzz* | Monday, 02 March , 2009,
10:28

The Cine Musicians Union (CMU), one of the oldest unions in the film
industry and the parent organization of all musicians on Sunday (March 1)
honored the first ever Oscar winner in their fraternity A.R Rahman.

He said that it was not only God's blessings which saw him win the coveted
Gold-plated statuettes but also saw him selected to collect them on behalf
of his fellow Indian musicians.

“It’s the aspiration of all (the musicians) and God selected me to collect
the award on their behalf. This award belongs to every person in the music
industry,’ was Rahman’s theory on winning the Oscars. He repeated ‘Ella
Pugazhum Iraivanuke’ (All Glory to the Almighty), which he spoke at the
Oscar awards ceremony last week.

Rahman added: “I used to wonder why Naushad, Ilayaraja, M.S Viswanathan,
Madan Mohan and others did not get the awards. But they have people’s love,
which is greater honor than the Oscars.”

The surprise of the evening was the presence of veteran Carnatic musician
Balamurali Krishna, who was the chief guest and Ilayaraja, which set to rest
speculation in the music world about their differences with Rahman.

Balamurali Krishna said: “The Oscars awards is a recognition of Rahman’s
musical creativity and hard work”. Heaping laurels on Rahman, the maestro
Ilayaraja said: “There are only a few who possess immense talent and still
go on to make it big. Rahman is a phenomenal musician. If MSV is Athara
Sruthi, I am Panchamam and Rahman is Panchamam”

On his part, veteran director K Balachander, who first introduced Rahman in
his home production* Roja*, directed by Maniratnam, said: “Rahman is a rare
genius. When other music composers make castles with their music, Rahman
builds monuments’. MSV blessed Rahman with many more such awards and said it
was a new beginning for the Indian music industry.

Rahman in his speech pleaded with his fans not to create hatred between the
music directors by comparing them. Said Rahman: “ I have been seeing the
hate mails flooding the net. I request my fans from degrading someone else’s
music, the music lovers should stop making such comments and using abusive
languages” Ilayaraja presented Rahman with a golden chain while Harris
Jayaraj presented a golden ring to the Mozart of Madras.

The function was hosted by S A Rajkumar and Abu Gabriel of CMU. Among those
who took part included Shankar Ganesh, Deva, Srikanth Deva Yuvanshankar
Raja, Karthik Raja, Vijay Anthony, D Imman, T M Soundararajan, L R Eswari,
Karthi, Chinmayi, Thippu, Chitra, Swarnalatha,Mano, drummer Shivamani among
others

The stunning success of the Slumdog Millionaire movie continues to echo
across the Internet by spawning a dance craze that has millions downloading
various versions of that high-energy Jai Ho (You are My Destiny) dance
that ends the film.

More than 60 videos are on You Tube alone, some from the movie but most home
made by fans who are posting their own versions.

The best quality one is this remix from the film:

Next to the film version, the slickest version of the dance was the one
performed by some professionals on Jay Leno's show as Oscar winner composer
A.R. Rahman performed the song. Here it is:

Ellen Degeneres had the Slumdog cast on her TV show and she got them to demo
it and teach the whole audience how:

Here's a beginner-level line dance walk through:

A half-dozen people have their kids doing Jai Ho dances. I'll spare you the
invariably poor results.

Same with a long list of videos of couples and individuals who mistakenly
think they have rhythm.

A bunch of kids in a church confirmation class from England did a version.

You get the idea. The dance is huge and getting even bigger because of
Internet video sharing

However, the rousing anthem came from Bollywood's Subhash Ghai! It was meant
for a score in the Yuvraaj, for which Ghai believes Rahman should have won
the Filmfare as music director.

While people may still tend to believe that it was either composer Rahman or
lyricist Gulzar who coined 'Jai Ho', Ghai has no interest in laying claim to
the winning phrase. “It was sweet of Rahman, who didn’t mind sharing with
the world the fact that I gave these words. But, I wouldn't like to claim
credit. Such creative interactions keep happening in the industry,” says
Bollywood's showman modestly.

“It was when we were composing Shalom Shalom for Yuvvraaj ... I wanted
Rahman to compose a peppy dance number for Zayed Khan with the words Jai Ho,
but it didn’t work out. Later, Rahman used the same for Danny (Boyle, Slumdog
Millionaire 's director) and I had no problems. I’m glad for Rahman.
Whatever the song, it was Rahman’s victory ultimately,” added Ghai.

Well, that’s quite humble of Ghai, specially being a part of an industry

Lot of old rare music pieces coming around :) great. Even I was looking for
something rare.

Long back when kizhakku cheemayile was released I saw a sports inauguration
ceremony in DD channel. The venue was chennai and 3 songs were shown which had
music by our Boss. One song starts with 'Tamilnadu'. Anyone remember? Anywhere
I can get the songs? Please correct me if I am wrong in recollecting.

This was the best ever TV programme on ARR I have watched till date.
This was telecasted on Pongal day in 1995. The Programme was titled A
R Rahman oru Kadhiraa illay Pudhiraa?. It was hosted by B.H. Abdul
hameed.

 K. Balachander, Vairamuthu, SPB etc spoke about ARR for about 45
minutes. (Remember that this was during his early days where he has
done only Roja, Pudiya mugam, Thiruda^2, Vandichola chinrasu, Duet,
Kadhalan etc) . SPB also told that in Japan they had printed T-shirts
with Chinna Chinna Aasai as the slogan.

ARR was wearing a Green Shirt (which was very common in all of his
interviews during those days) and it was in his Panchathan studio. For
the last 15 minutes of the interview, ARR was asked to compose
something for the Sun TV viewers on occasion of Pongal. It was the
first time (and last time i think) that ARR produced LIVE music .
Couple of Nadaswaram and Thavil people were there in his studio
and ARR gave them the swarams in verbal and asked them to play, and he
recorded them as they played (This was done 2-3 times after some
corrections) .

This one is a real treat for all RAHMANIACS and a must have !!

to compose a musical bit for the Pongal Occasion. Even though i heard
that only one time, i was really hooked into that great composition by

[arr] [non-arr] - Music recco - Gulaal

2009-03-02 Thread Anil Nair
Another cracker from the Anurag Kashyap stable music by Piyush Mishra
and Indian Ocean(the group)

The real USP of this album are the lyrics combined with an unusual sort of
music. Be warned, the songs are lyrics heavy and I feel this would be more
enjoyed by the Hindi-speaking listener.

I really am impressed with the way AK is using music in his movies and would
love to see an ARR-AK combination someday. AK's budget is I guess mostly
less than ARR's fees :-) - but I am sure ARR wouldn't put that as a barrier
if AK approaches him with an interesting subject...I pray that someday this
combo materialises.

2009-03-02 Thread rivjot
I agree with Ghai, Yuvvraaj was better than any other Rahman's album
in 2008, music didnt become blockbuster or didnt get nominated solely
because of Ghai.

What is Ghai saying though.. he'd have appreciated if composer had won
instead of Best playback singer... Alka didnt win either :(
It was Shreya ghoshal for 'Teri Ore'... I cant believe filmfare's
choice for that. Alka deserved that award any day any time...

However, the rousing anthem came from Bollywood's Subhash Ghai! It
was meant
for a score in the Yuvraaj, for which Ghai believes Rahman should
have won
 the Filmfare as music director.

While people may still tend to believe that it was either composer
Rahman or
lyricist Gulzar who coined 'Jai Ho', Ghai has no interest in laying
claim to
the winning phrase. It was sweet of Rahman, who didn't mind sharing
with
the world the fact that I gave these words. But, I wouldn't like to
claim
credit. Such creative interactions keep happening in the industry, says
 Bollywood's showman modestly.

It was when we were composing Shalom Shalom for Yuvvraaj ... I wanted
Rahman to compose a peppy dance number for Zayed Khan with the words
Jai Ho,
but it didn't work out. Later, Rahman used the same for Danny
(Boyle, Slumdog
Millionaire 's director) and I had no problems. I'm glad for Rahman.
Whatever the song, it was Rahman's victory ultimately, added Ghai.

Well, that's quite humble of Ghai, specially being a part of an industry
where copyrights and credit-fights are a daily affair. However,
that's not

[arr] Rehna Tu made me cry

2009-03-02 Thread Ravi Subramanian
Hello all,

I've been away from this list for *years* now, though I have indeed
been listening to Rahman's music during this time. Slumdog's selection
and the two Oscars were the LONG overdue recognition he deserves - my
wife and I were high-fiving at our homes watching the Oscar show :)

But I'm writing today after all this time to share the ABSOLUTE joy I
felt listening to Rehna Tu in Delhi-6 this morning (I had not been
able to listen to this album till now). When the song segues into the
electronically enhanced Carnatic raaga in the end, I could not control
my tears of joy - I don't think I've felt this way since I heard the
Bombay theme in Roja. Did anyone else feel this way? (or am I the only
bleeding heart around here?) :-) Also, does anyone know what raaga
this is and what instrument has been modified electronically to
produce this most intriguing bit?

He is such a genius, I cannot begin to describe the pride I feel in
being a lifelong fan of his and hailing from the same city as he :)

Rock on!

Re: [arr] Let's keep in mind the attitudes and exposure of the elders

2009-03-02 Thread Adi
Sooper share Mugilan! Thanks! Great to know this! ARR's music is available
to all those who are willing!

Love,
Adi.

PS: We met during Bangalore concert, remember? At the gate?! :-)

2009/3/2 Mugilan Jeyaraman jmugi...@gmail.com

After I moved
to chennai, I slowly took over, thanks to the Internet and
 arrahmanfans.com :)

 Regards,
 Mugilan.

[arr] What do we as ARR fans all have in common?

2009-03-02 Thread Chord
This question relates to our love for ARR and his music. I have
always been fascinated in the relationships between human variables
and music/art preference.

We all love ARR and his music for various reasons. There are many
individual differences as to why each of us loves his music so much.
But, I'm more interested in the common factors. We are part of a fan
group, posting messages, having ARR and his music as a big part of
our lives. This same question can be asked to any fan group of any
artist, but why is it that ARR's music touches us and impresses us AS
A GROUP and does not have the same effect on others? Again, I'm more
interested in COMMON human factors that bind us as a group that lead
us to be such passionate and devoted ARR fans.

Because ARR's music is so spiritually informed, are we as a group of
devoted ARR fans more sensitive to and attuned to spirituality in
general? Because ARR's music is so diverse and encompasses worldly
influences, are we as a group more worldly and tolerant in our
approach to human differences? Because ARR's music is often so thick
and layered and well textured, are we as a group for some reason
better able to process this complexity in more meaningful ways than
others who prefer simpler music by virtue of our education,
upbringing, or other factors? Are we as a group more compassionate
towards others since ARR is all about giving and helping?

Again, these are just thoughts. I'm interested in generating a
aningful discussion about what factors bind us as a group of
passionate ARR fans. Thanks for reading and hope to hear your
responses.

Guys,

any of you has the collection of Vairamuthu's poems with ARR's music? It was
shown in Jaya TV during his initial days for the period of 13 weeks. I think
its right after Duet. Also ARR composed special theme music for one of the
Jaya's functions.

This was the best ever TV programme on ARR I have watched till
date. This was telecasted on Pongal day in 1995. The Programme was
titled A R Rahman oru Kadhiraa illay Pudhiraa?. It was hosted by
B.H. Abdul hameed.

Rock on!

played using an instrument called 'Continuum'..u can read abt this at

One can now guage the greatness of Rahman..and what a genius he is...when
the song concludes u can sense the goosebumps on ur flesh (but this feeling
will disappear on repeated listening)happy listening!

Whatever the song, it was Rahman's victory ultimately, added Ghai.

Well, that's quite humble of Ghai, specially being a part of an industry
where copyrights and credit-fights are a daily affair. However,
 that's not
where the Ghai-Rahman mutual admiration ends. Congratulate Ghai about Tu
Muskura from Yuvvraaj taking home a Filmfare Award for Best Playback
 Singer
and the man says, It would have been better if the composer
 (Rahman) had
won the award rather than the singer. Rahman deserved it more for
 Yuvvraaj than
Jaane tu ... or Jodha Akbar .

Ghai claims to have received hundreds of SMSes of disheartened fans of
Yuvvraaj's music. He says, It's believed that if the movie doesn't
 work,
  the music isn't good either.

[arr] தம்பி ரஹ்மான் - உ ருகிய இளையராஜா

2009-03-02 Thread sandhiya vs

scintillating.

  K. Balachander, Vairamuthu, SPB etc spoke about ARR for about 45
minutes. (Remember that this was during his early days where he has
done only Roja, Pudiya mugam, Thiruda^2, Vandichola chinrasu, Duet,

with Chinna Chinna Aasai as the slogan.

He also gave notations to the Thavil person which was
awesome to watch. In the end, ARR mixed it completely and played it
for the viewers which was a TREAT to watch.

I am searching for the interview (SUN TV has the rights for it). In

[arr] Re: RGV on ARR

2009-03-02 Thread jsrwm
Guys,

Patiently read the full article. What a great write up from RGV. (though
he's not actively working with ARR these days). The following lines can
vouch the difference in ARR.

he treats each and every song of his like his own daughter whom he is
preparing for a marriage with the listener.

One other trait I noticed about the difference between A.R and other
music directors is that where the others pretty much dictate to the
musicians and the singers about what they want, A.R interacts with them;
in a manner of making each and every one of his solo musicians and
singers feel as if it is their song and not his, thereby placing the
onus on them to feel from within to get the best out of them. This I
have never ever seen remotely practiced by any other music director

*Mumbai: *Double Oscar-winner AR Rahman will be crooning at a concert in
Kerala to support an initiative by an NGO aimed at rehabilitating HIV/AIDS
affected children. Many popular musicians and singers of the country are
expected to join hands with the maestro for this event to be held on April
14th, including long-time friend Sivamani.
 DNA
Rahman wants to give back something to the people from who he has received
so much love and affection for so many years.

According to UNAIDS, a mammoth 2.5 million are infected with the deadly
virus in India, making it the third highest in the world. Only half of this
population has some access to preventive measures. HIV-positive patients are
wary to come out in the open even today because of the social stigma
attached to the disease. Sex education is still not welcomed and prevention
programmes are shunned too.

A source close to the event says, Rahman wants to tour various Indian and
world cities. Logistics have not been confirmed yet, but this concert will
most probably kick-start the proceedings. Rahman wants to give back
something to the people from who he has received so much love and affection
for so many years. The proceeds of the concert in Thiruvananthapuram will go
for the cause.

Thanks for the tip Anish - this is fascinating! I've always felt a
keyboard with a pitch-bend wheel did not do justice to the kind of
intricate gamakas and intonations Rahman puts in his music. The
continuum fingerboard sounds pretty darn amazing, seems rather hard to

accuracy requirements for hitting a note) and entirely appropriate for
Rahman :)

[arr] Re: What do we as ARR fans all have in common?

2009-03-02 Thread Ravi Subramanian
You know, this is a rather fascinating question probably worthy of a
Ph.D. thesis, and I'm not even kidding :) (I've similarly felt that dog
lovers tend to be compassionate and more accepting).

I'm tempted to answer YES to each of your questions, especially since
that means the result is rather flattering (I'm more spiritually
attuned, accepting/tolerant and educated that the rest of the world
[:p] ). But seriously, I'm going to throw out some more characteristics
that I think may say something about us as a GROUP:

* We tend to be detail-oriented. I think this is evidenced in the
kind of traffic I remember seeing here a lot (including by myself) where
people notice and ask about nuances of certain songs, instruments or
raagas

* We resonate to music more than lyrics. I've seen non-Indians and
Indians alike uniformly enjoying all of Rahman's music be it Tamil,
Hindi, Telugu, BGM or instrumental.
* We love fusion of anything with anything else -- or at least that's
the case with me [:)] Most of Rahman's music tends to meld multiple
styles and we revel in this. I find that I appreciate fusion in various
other aspects of my life as well (I like fusion cuisines, I tend to pick
up/like other languages, etc.). Perhaps this also means we're very
curious and we love to know what happens when you mix X with Y and Z.
That's all I can come up with for now, and I'm pretty sure I've not even
addressed your original, very interesting question...

What do others think?
